What a performance! Students from years 7-11 took part in this year's school musical, Bugsy Malone. Rehearsals began before the summer holiday and have required a lot of dedication from everyone involved, including attending on a weekend. However, all of the hard work paid off during show week, especially when they performed to a sell out audience on Friday 9 December, where the whole cast received a standing ovation! We can't wait to find out what next year's musical is going to be!

YEAR 10 ENTERPRISE CHALLENGE WHAT ARE THE UPDATES?

On Friday 9 December, a group of Year 10 students attended The Yorkshire Business Awards in Leeds. This was to acknowledge the fantastic work that they had been completing as part of the Young Entrepreneur Challenge. Although they didn't win, they were awarded runners up out of 9 other teams. In addition to this, students have been working alongside a mentor who works with the business sector of Leeds Beckett University. Students attended the university in order to run their own stall to sell their products. Written by Attia Hayee

KARATE SHOWCASE Students from the Ruth Gorse Academy were chosen to represent GORSE Karate at the West Yorkshire Open Championship on the 27th November. This event was organised and refereed by the West Yorkshire Schools of Karate who are governed by the NAKMAS (The National Association of Karate and Martial Arts Schools). This event was an excellent opportunity for students from the Ruth Gorse Academy to showcase the skills they’ve acquired throughout the term. Our students, in particular, competed in the 8-13, as well as 13-17 category in the sparring and grading sections, and they all performed exceptionally well. - Written By Sophie Ojo

WINTER WONDERLAND- 100% ATTENDANCE At TRGA, we love to celebrate our students’ achievements, such as 100% attendance. Over the past few years, we have held numerous 100% Attendance Club events, such as: the Spring Extravaganza, pop up stalls and more! This Christmas, we hosted one of our biggest celebrations yet, our very own Winter Wonderland! All that students needed to do was maintain full attendance for the month of December in order to access this amazing event. The thrilling rides and mouth-watering food went down a real treat and were enjoyed thoroughly by all who attended. Written by Fatou Jallow

SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL INITIATIVES Students who represent Green Gorse, attended their first meeting of the year at the Stephen Longfellow Academy. From this meeting, students were able to identify the following areas for development and will be working on improving these in the new year: Insufficient recycling bins around school, particularly around key areas and communal spaces such as the atrium and dinner halls. We should use recycling bins as well as non-recycling bins to allow a clear distinction between them. It is not a necessity to reduce non-recyclable items such as food waste due to the Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility. Create art using recycled items. This could be a competition that will be judged by the student leadership team and the art department. Raise awareness about the consequences of climate change. We want to increase the amount of plants around school, to improve mental health and improve air quality. Written by Joseph Gibson

PERSONALISED APPROACH

CHARITY WORK CHILDREN IN NEED On national Children in Need day, students were encouraged to wear yellow or spotted accessories in exchange for a £1 donation. As a result of the hard work of our amazing staff and students, we were able to raise £78! Thank you to those who participated and made a difference in the lives of young people.

FareShare FareShare are a local charity, who have worked with The Ruth Gorse Academy to raise donations for families that are struggling in this cost of living crisis, by donating unused food items. Many staff and students contributed to the cause, and we were able to raise an outstanding number of donations for those in need.

Christmas Jumper Day! On Thursday 8 December, staff and students were able to wear a Christmas jumper and/or non-uniform. Students and staff were asked to contribute £1 which would be split between the two fantastic charities: Save the Children and St. George's Crypt. In total, the school raised more than £400. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the day.
