NEW Pelican Preserve Volunteer Opportunity Committee My name is Bob Miller and it is my pleasure to announce the formation of the Pelican Preserve Volunteer Opportunity Committee. The goal of the committee is to help Pelican Preserve Residents be more aware, on a continual basis, of volunteer opportunities in our area and increase participation. Committee members include Residents Jim and Sue Latham, Sherry Patterson, Laura Poisson, Debbie Strobl and myself. Each month we will share information in the Pelican Preserve Newsletter regarding organizations in Fort Myers that desperately need volunteers. We will also highlight a volunteer from Pelican Preserve as well as upcoming special volunteer events. Volunteers come in all forms. Some work four hours a week, one day only, fill-in substitute, a couple hours here and there or whatever time that can be given. The opportunities are in so many areas including hospitals, animal shelters, homeless and abuse shelters, drug and alcohol rehabs, nursing homes, medical rehab facilities, the VA, food distribution centers and even helping residents in Pelican Preserve. We’ve heard people say many times they would like to volunteer but are not sure what is out there and what they may need for skills to participate. We hope the Volunteer Fair and the monthly newsletter information to help make that connection easier between the opportunity and any skills required. Most opportunities do not need special skills or if they do, training is provided. The primary skill is a willingness to help. Many volunteers feel a new sense of purpose, a special connection to the people they serve, and a feeling of making a difference. It also provides an opportunity to meet new people and begin new friendships. One thing heard consistently from volunteers is " I feel I am benefitting more from volunteering than I ever thought."

Organization Spotlight Pace Center for Girls Hi, I’m Molly Silverman the volunteer Coordinator at Pace Center for Girls. I started with Pace earlier this year and love to help my volunteers find purpose and community by getting to know the strengths and gifts you bring as a volunteer. Some of our opportunities such as serving lunch, tutoring, answering the door, or general administrative work can be a weekly commitment. We also have events and holiday positions if you would like to help just one time. Feel free to reach out with an email or phone call if you want discuss your availability. We also have a tour every third Wednesday of the month called Pathways to Pace where you can meet a Pace student and tour our facility! I can be contacted by text or phone call at (928) 380-0888 and email [email protected] Pace Center for Girls located at 3800 Evans Ave. and serves Lee County. Pace believes our communities are stronger when girls and women have the opportunity to thrive. We do this by fostering safe and supportive spaces that help our girls achieve their goals beyond what they believed possible. Our exceptional team of counselors and educators take into consideration each girl’s unique strengths, experiences as young women, and history with trauma when creating their individualized plans of care. In support of our vision, Pace offers full academic services, counseling, life-skills training, career preparation and more in 23 communities and growing. We have seen transformational improvements among our girls personally and professionally. Last year, 100% of our girls improved academically and 89% were in school, higher education, or employed one year after completing the Pace program. Pace offers services that consider how girls learn and develop, understanding they differ from boys in their relationships, cultural roles, communications and learning styles, and the experiences they bring with them. Pace has more than 37 years of experience and commitment to evidence-based programming, and has demonstrated strong results in helping prevent delinquency, reduce recidivism, improve academic performance and behavior at school, and impact positive outcomes transitioning from Pace such as employment, graduation rates, and post-secondary education. Pace Center for Girls is a nationally recognized program that provides girls and young women an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training, and advocacy. Pace meets the needs of vulnerable girls by connecting them to teachers and counselors who intervene and divert them from harm to a path of empowerment, strength, and a productive future. Pace’s programs and services – includes individual counseling, family counseling, career preparation, and academic achievement – create educational and supportive experiences that teach girls they can make a difference – no matter their home environment.

FRIENDS IN NEED OF COMPANIONSHIP

The “Friends in Need of Companionship” program started in 2017. Over the years our Volunteers have met Resident’s needs such as, visiting a homebound person, playing cards/games, watching TV together, or just socializing with them. This gives a spouse or adult child respite time to go to a class, do grocery shopping, or take care of personal business, etc. There is NO medical, hands-on-care provided by our volunteers, but only support and companionship (Fact: Over 98% of our volunteers have no medical background). They are just caring individuals. The volunteering can be once a week, once a month, etc., solely determined by the volunteer and their availability. We usually send out two volunteers for each visit and there can be multiple volunteers for each Resident to ensure coverage. Orientation is given to all volunteers. There are Volunteers ready to help now, and we encourage you to take advantage of our program, if there is a need. Once assistance is requested, Nurse Coordinators will meet with the family to ensure that the volunteers can meet the need for Companionship for the Resident. The “REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE” form can be obtained from the Town Center Reception Office, Soleil Health & Fitness bulletin board or downloaded from the Pelican Preserve website under: Town Center>Center Documents>Miscellaneous Forms> Friends in Need of Companionship. “VOLUNTEER FORMS” for our program can be obtained the same way. We hope you will consider being involved in this program, which fosters a sense of caring and support for everyone in our community. Our mantra is “Pelican Preserve Residents helping other Pelican Preserve Residents in their time of need”. If you have any questions please contact one of the Nurse Committee Members: CC Carpenter 239-791-8106 Alma-Lynn Kamps 239-689-6660 Marilyn Richardson 765-215-4888

Additionally, regular blood donation can lower the risk of severe cardiovascular events such as stroke by 33%. And you burn 650 calories! Please help us make our goal of 30 units! Did you know that one in seven people entering a hospital needs blood? Spare an hour and donate.
