ii.! Jaime Ortíz Patiño was born in 1930 in Sucre, Bolivia. He was christened in 1930 in Sucre, Bolivia.

Otro artículo: "Eight paintings by Gauguin, Cezanne, Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, FantinLatour and Boudin - most of them acquired in the 1980's by Jaime Ortiz-Patino of Geneva, an heir to a Bolivian tin fortune - are to be auctioned on May 9 in New York. David J. Nash, who heads Sotheby's fine art sales, said yesterday that the paintings are expected to sell for more than $50 million. Mr. Ortiz-Patino was asked yesterday during a brief visit to New York whether the collection was assembled for investment. ''Definitely not,'' he said. ''I believe a collection should be a living thing. Honestly, I find it very difficult now to improve on what I had and find it very difficult to buy any more paintings of this quality.'' Mr. Ortiz-Patino said he continues to collect Old Master paintings and rare books and manuscripts. The most valuable of the paintings, Mr. Nash said, is Gauguin's ''Mata Mua'' from 1892, painted during the artist's first trip to the South Pacific. The presale estimate is $20 million to $25 million, more than five times the $3.8 million it was sold for in 1984. The buyer was identified then by Sotheby's as Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, a Swiss industrialist and art collector and a member of the advisory board of Sotheby's Holdings, the parent company. Joint Ownership Sotheby's said yesterday that the Gauguin was jointly

28

owned by the Baron and Mr. Ortiz-Patino. Mr. Nash said he did not know until sometime later that the Baron, who was on the telephone with Mr. Nash from Tokyo through the sale, had bought the painting in parnership with Mr. Ortiz-Patino. ''For two and a half years it was on tour with Thyssen's paintings and for the last two and a half years it hung in Mr. Patino's study in Geneva,'' Mr. Nash said. ''They had said they would then decide what they would do about the painting. They decided to sell it.'' ''The estimate is based first of all on what I know about the increase in paintings since 1984, and it is based secondly on what I understand to be the demand for full-scale paintings from the Tahitian period,'' Mr. Nash said". Van Gogh's Category John Tancock, a specialist in Impressionist sales at Sotheby's, said yesterday: ''Gauguin is in the same category as van Gogh in terms of the rarity of his paintings and his popularity. There is practically nothing on the market from his Tahiti period.'' A Cezanne still life, ''Pitcher and Fruits on a Table'' from 1893-94, is expected to sell for $8 million to $10 million. Renoir's ''Young Girl in a Hat Decorated With Wild Flowers'' from 1880, is expected to bring $9 million to $12 million, and his ''Couple Reading'' from 1877, a rare study of the artist's brother Edmond and a favorite model, Marguerite Legrand, is expected to sell for $2 million to $3 million. Mr. Ortiz-Patino inherited two paintings in 1980 at the death of his mother, Graziella Patino - the Renoir ''Young Girl'' and a Boudin beach scene painted between 1888 and 1895, which is expected to bring up to $300,000. The earliest painting in the group is an 1860's Fantin-Latour floral still life, which is expected to sell for at most $2.5 million." (Ref. The New York Times, March 19, 2008. "Arts - Rita Reif. "Bolivian Planning to Sell 8 Paintings at Auction").
