THE INTERVIEWEE: Chano is a native Mexican from the city ofTamazunchale, San Luis Potosi. He migrated here fourteen years ago after he was unable to find sufficient work back in Mexico. Growing up in a large household, and being the oldest, Chano left school after la secundaria (equivalent of middle school) in order to work and provide additional economic support for his family. Originally he arrived to North Carolina on an agriculture contract, in order to work during the tobacco season. Afterwards, he decided not to return to Mexico and move to Durham in order to work alongside other family members who had settled in the area first. Chano is currently working as a baker/ pastry chef here in the Durham area, going on fourteen years. He plans are uncertain, but he hopes to return to Mexico to see his family soon. THE INTERVIEWER: Stephanie Markunas is a twenty-five year old student, pursuing her bachelor's degree in International Studies and Spanish at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is currently part of Dr. Hannah Gill's course on Latin American Migrant Perspectives (INTS 390 and APPLES Global Course Guanajuato).

This interview is a component of a her final project that uses ethnographic research techniques, including oral histories, to focus on immigrant related issues in our local community. This is her second semester here at UNC-CH, having transferred from Durham Technical Community College in the fall of 2010. She has had a long and unique work experience throughout her career, but is currently teaching dance classes to all ages at Studio A DanceArts in Chapel Hill, NC, located behind the American Legion. However, her passion and reason for being in school, is to work with the diversity in immigrant communities throughout our country. DESCRIPTION OF THE INTERVIEW: This interview was conducted in the living room of my apartment in Durham, NC on Monday evening. CONTENT OF THE INTERVIEW: This interview was focused, with the intent of revealing the causes and differences between perceptions of gender roles here in the United States and his community in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, a) Questions were asked about what his role was in the community and, specifically, within his house growing up in Mexico, b) Questions were asked about whether there were programs and ideas that facilitated a certain structure based on gender, especially in school, c) Questions regarding his family relations, and the roles his parents played in the house were developed upon, d) Questions were formulated discussing the differences between rural areas and more urban areas in Mexico, e) Furthermore, questions attempted to focus in on how the perception in Mexico differs to that in the United States f) Discussion about these differences, and the potentiality for difficulties and strains when transitioning in between different societies, was also attempted, g) Furthermore, discussion remained

within the realm of his experiences. What was it like and what does he expect for the future when returning to Mexico. NOTE ON RECORDING: I used an Olympus VN-5200 PC digital voice recorder. I am interviewing Chano here on April 11, 2011 at 8:00pm. We are located in my apartment in Durham North Carolina, and we will start now. Entonces, ^Chano de donde eres? Chano: Mexico. SM: ^Y que parte en Mexico? Chano: La cuidad de Tamazunchale en el estado de San Luis Potosi. SM: ^Cuantos anos tienes aqui en Durham? Chano: Aqui en Durham, tengo catorce anos viviendo. SM: ^Cuando tii creciste en Mexico, cual fue tii lugar en tii casa? ^Como fue tii ninez alii en Mexico?

Chano: Bueno, mi ninez vivi con mi familia, todos, hasta los quince anos. Hasta los quince anos, vivi en mi casa. Despues de alii, fui a la cuidad de Mexico a vivir cinco anos mas. SM: iY tu creciste con otros hermanos y hermanas? Chano: Si, creci con mis siete hermanos. SM: ^Siete hermanos? Chano: Si, tres hermanas y cuatro hermanos. SM: ^Cual fue tu, como, posicion en la casa? Como, ^eres el mas mayor o mas joven? Chano: Soy el mayor. SM: ^Y tuviste unos responsabilidades en tu casa? Chano: Todos tenemos responsabilidades en las casa. Tenia que ayudar a mi mama con sus cosas, y en la casa tambien. SM: ^Tii tuviste los mismos tipos de responsabilidades de tus hermanos? Chano: No, yo tuve que ayudar mas porque yo era el mayor. SM: ^Y en comparacion a las hermanas, en comparacion a los hermanos, ustedes tuvieron otros diferentes tipos? Como ustedes ayudaron a tu papa y vez que ayudar a tu mama. ^O todos tuvieron los mismos tipos de trabajos?

Chano: Bueno, como yo era el mayor, tenia mas responsabilidades que mis hermanas. Mis hermanas solamente tenian que ayudar a mi mama, y yo tenia que hacer otras cosas. Ir a escuela y despues hacer otras cosas. SM: Bueno, ^entonces tu fuiste a escuela desde que edad? Chano: Desde los seis hasta los trece, doce anos. A la secundaria. SM: ^Todos de tus hermanos y hermanas fueron a escuela? Chano: Si todos fueron a escuela, a secundaria. SM: ^A secundaria?
