Av. Universitaria 1801, San Miguel, Lima 32, Perú. Teléfono (511) 626-2000. 1.2 Your country; its population. Peru is a country in western South America. Its territory is divided into 25 regions. Its geography varies from the arid plains of the Pacific coast to the peaks of the Andes mountains and the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. It is a developing country with a high Human Development Index score and a poverty level around 36%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, fishing, mining, and manufacturing of products such as textiles. The Peruvian population, estimated at 29.5 million, is multiethnic. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music. 1.3 Your academy. National Academy of Sciences (ANC), was created on 6th of august of 1938 in order to promote the scientific research and the diffusion of the scientific knowledge.

3. Strong/weak points of your academy regarding gender issues The ANC agree with including the gender issue and invite women scientists in the different activities. The ANC has included for the first time in 2009 a woman in its board. In the same way, on December 15th of 2010, the ANC invite 3 women scientists and 3 men scientists to become associated members.

5. Actions for WfS-WG • The mandate of WfS-WG is to help academies attract girls and women into science and technology, empower women scientists and engineers, and engage women at the grass roots, for the purpose of S&T capacity building. Given this mandate, and limited resources, on which actions should WfSWG concentrate in order to be most effective? • It is quite important to include new indicators to evaluate the “Good Management Practices”, improve the politics, the transparency of the information, capacity building and careers for women. • It is urgent to obtain indicators by sex to measure the generation of local, regional and national knowledge according to the different economic activities, specially the ones which need new perspectives in science and technology.
