ho here loves a good meal? I am definitely one of those that enjoys food immensely (which doesn’t bode well for me in my future priesthood!), but I’m not alone: many cultures, from many places, seem to place a large emphasis on food, and on the experience of the meal. This applies even to our earliest Christian predecessors, and even to Christ himself; the Scriptures are inundated with references to food and to the shared meal. Why is food so important in our life of faith? What is it about the meal that the Lord asked us to continue sharing our meals together, even 2000 years after he celebrated the “first meal” of the Eucharist with the Apostles (Lk 22:19)? One of the most basic functions of the meal is the fact that it nourishes, and strengthens. If we don’t eat, not only will we get weaker, but it will lead to our eventual death; thus, to share in this food is to share in life, and we begin to see how the themes of Christ as food and Christ as life begin to make sense (especially as we’re entering a series of Sundays centering on John 6, one of the most beautiful and theologically rich chapters in the entirety of the scriptures, with Christ describing the Eucharist that we still celebrate regularly today!). This might be a good practice to try when you read the Scriptures, when you see references to food, such as manna in the desert (Ex 16:4), or when Melchizadek offers bread and wine to bless Abraham (Gen 14:17-20), or even when the Lord sends food to Elijah by way of Ravens (1 Kings 17:4), imagine that this food is not just food, but God nourishing and strengthening his people, with himself; God is our food which gives us true life (Jn 6:55)! Another aspect of the meal is how wonderful it is when it has this community aspect, when the 12 apostles gather at the table, imagine the 12 tribes of Israel gathering, which is a motif that all of humanity is offered this awesome banquet from Christ himself. The bread is indeed something meant to feed us, but it is also meant to be shared, and these connections between the Body of Christ in the spiritual sense, the Body of Christ present in the Church, and the physical, actual, real body of Christ offered on the altar daily become so apparent and rich that it would take volumes upon volumes of works to even begin to understand this great mystery (and indeed if you looked at the volumes the saints have written on precisely this subject you would be in awe at what an incredible event this meal of the mass is!) This focus on food and the meal is something that will be permeating our masses for the next few Sundays, let us pray with this theme, and seek to incorporate this in our own lives, the theme of not only being fed and nourished by our God, but how we can convey that nourishment to others. May the words of Christ be imprinted on our hearts: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty (Jn 6:35).”

ith today’s two accounts of feeding miracles and the psalm response about the Lord’s hand feeding us, it is easy to gloss over the marvelous hymn in Ephesians. It is built around the most potent biblical numbers: one, three, and seven. The core of it is the word “one” expressed seven times. Three of these describe the church: one body, one Spirit, one hope; the next three are the foundations of the church: one Lord [Jesus], one faith, one baptism. All of these are bound up together in the one Father of all. While we might feel daunted by the prospect of duplicating the wonders worked by Elisha and Jesus in the feeding of multitudes, Ephesians gives us a more realistic way to live and “feed” others as the church: by living in humility and gentleness, by acting with patience, bearing with each other in love, and always seeking and striving to preserve unity through peace. Who among us cannot increase the way we “feed” the church and the world by living this way? We are always called upon to “feed” the world in the literal sense; but our mission as church tells us that others are also fed by the way we live and act each moment of each day.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

V. CIVIC AND POLITICAL LOVE

228. Care for nature is part of a lifestyle which includes the capacity for living together and communion. Jesus reminded us that we have God as our common Father and that this makes us brothers and sisters. Fraternal love can only be gratuitous; it can never be a means of repaying others for what they have done or will do for us. That is why it is possible to love our enemies. This same gratuitousness inspires us to love and accept the wind, the sun and the clouds, even though we cannot control them. In this sense, we can speak of a “universal fraternity”. 229. We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it. We have had enough of immorality and the mockery of ethics, goodness, faith and honesty. It is time to acknowledge that light-hearted superficiality has done us no good. When the foundations of social life are corroded, what ensues are battles over conflicting interests, new forms of violence and brutality, and obstacles to the growth of a genuine culture of care for the environment. 230. Saint Therese of Lisieux invites us to practise the little way of love, not to miss out on a kind word, a smile or any small gesture which sows peace and friendship. An integral ecology is also made up of simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness. In the end, a world of exacerbated consumption is at the same time a world which mistreats life in all its forms. 231. Love, overflowing with small gestures of mutual care, is also civic and political, and it makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world. Love for society and commitment to the common good are outstanding expressions of a charity which affects not only relationships between individuals but also “macro -relationships, social, economic and political ones”.[156] That is why the Church set before the world the ideal of a “civilization of love”.[157] Social love is the key to authentic development: “In order to make society more human, more worthy of the human person, love in social life – political, economic and cultural – must be given renewed value, becoming the constant and highest norm for all activity”.[158] In this framework, along with the importance of little everyday gestures, social love moves us to devise larger strategies to halt environmental degradation and to encourage a “culture of care” which permeates all of society. When we feel that God is calling us to intervene with others in these social dynamics, we should realize that this too is part of our spirituality, which is an exercise of charity and, as such, matures and sanctifies us. 232. Not everyone is called to engage directly in political life. Society is also enriched by a countless array of organizations which work to promote the common good and to defend the environment, whether natural or urban. Some, for example, show concern for a public place (a building, a fountain, an abandoned monument, a landscape, a square), and strive to protect, restore, improve or beautify it as something belonging to everyone. Around these community actions, relationships develop or are recovered and a new social fabric emerges. Thus, a community can break out of the indifference induced by consumerism. These actions cultivate a shared identity, with a story which can be remembered and handed on. In this way, the world, and the quality of life of the poorest, are cared for, with a sense of solidarity which is at the same time aware that we live in a common home which God has entrusted to us. These community actions, when they express self-giving love, can also become intense spiritual experiences.
