Ada Pastor de Roscoe and Joseph A. Klucas. McGraw-Hill, 2010. Catalog description: Develops the necessary skills to write with clarity, precision, and style. It emphasizes the proper use of the accents and the correct use of grammar. Prerequisite: SPAN 2B or equivalent. 3 units. Course description: This course is designed for students who are starting their third-year or advanced-level study of Spanish or scored a 4 on the Spanish AP exam. In it they will be introduced to the art of composition and provided with a comprehensive review of the major aspects of grammar previously learned, with an additional focus being the continued study of Hispanic cultures. The course aims to fulfill the special needs of both non-native and native speakers of Spanish alike as they seek to improve their writing skills in the language. Course components: • • • • • • •

Method of instruction: This course is conducted entirely in Spanish using the following elements and techniques:     

Presentation and discussion of lesson topics (PowerPoint slides will be viewed in class and placed on Blackboard CT weekly) Cultural readings Exercises Small group activities Short compositions

Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate their skill in accentuation and spelling in Spanish and be conscious of the basic differences between Spanish and English pronunciation through the study of the rules for syllable division, stress, and accentuation. 2) Demonstrate a better command of certain fundamental aspects of Spanish grammar and vocabulary appropriate for this fifth-semester level. 3) Demonstrate the ability to write clear and coherent sentences, paragraphs, and compositions after carefully reviewing the inherent qualities and characteristics of each. 4) Demonstrate their knowledge of a variety of topics concerning Hispanic culture through the reading and discussion of selected cultural readings in the textbook. Testing: Please note the day of the quizzes and exams on the course calendar. The day and time of the final exam for this class is Wednesday, May 18th, from 10:15AM-12:15PM. All quizzes and exams must be taken when scheduled and not at other times. Grading scale: 100-93=A 92-90=A89-87=B+ 86-83=B

82-80=B79-77=C+ 76-73=C 72-70=C-

69-67=D+ 66-63=D 62-60=D59 and below=F

Important Dates: Last day to add/drop for all semester classes on My Sac State: Friday, February 5th. (After this day, instructor and department chair signatures are required) Last day to add/drop at department offices with approved petition: Friday, February 19th. (No drops after this date unless Dean approves career-related or medical reasons). Compositions Several compositions will be assigned throughout the semester, though they do not appear on the course calendar. They must be typed in a 12-point font, double-spaced, and contain all Spanish accents and correctly-used punctuation. Late compositions or compositions e-mailed to me will not be accepted barring extraordinary circumstances. Attendance and participation/General policies: Regular class attendance and active student participation are essential for this course. Students may miss no more than TWO class days without affecting their grade. Starting with the third absence, however, points will be deducted from the attendance and participation grade. With the seventh absence, you will be given an F in the class. If you miss two classes the first two weeks of the semester, you will be removed from the course. SPAN 47 is conducted in Spanish and it is expected that students will use Spanish at all times. Native speakers will be called upon routinely to give their own feedback concerning their own experiences with the Spanish language. No electronic devices of any sort may be turned at any time during class, including cell phones, Ipads, and especially laptops, which are a tremendous distraction to the rest of the class. In addition, the class cannot be recorded without the instructor’s consent.
