July is a month so hot that you either need to embrace the sweaty blistering steaming heat or get out of town. If you choose the latter, Santiago de Cuba at the far end of the country hosts Cuba's best carnival toward the end of the month (July 21-29). This is the cradle of Cuban music, so this is a must see for those seeking that authentic experience. There is absolutely no chance of Rolling Stones stealing the show. Earlier in the month (July 3-9), there is another Santiago de Cuba festival, the Festival del Caribe, Fiesta del Fuego which is dedicated to Colombia this year.

Back in Havana, there is no let up in activities, exhibitions, concerts, festivals and performances. For those looking for a party with the in crowd, don't miss the III Festival de Música Electrónica Cubana on July 13. Cuba's premier comedy festival also kicks off from June 30 to July 7 and there are loads of activities for kids. We hope you enjoy this review. THROUGH JULY 22 The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is celebrating its 100th birthday with two exhibitions related to the anniversary. The El Museo Nacional de Cuba's Orígenes de la colección examines to the museum's first exhibition in 1913 and shows pieces from its present collections, which later became part of other Havana museums. Hitos' Crecimiento de la colección de arte en el Museo Nacional (1913-1963), on the other hand, centres on the significant instances in the museum's life, such as the loan of artwork by the San Alejandro Art Academy in 1913, the purchase of pieces from the Italian collector Salvatore Buffardi in 1925, and the legacy of Rafael Carvajal in 1954. Intra corpora, an exhibitio of painting and sculpture by Arístides Esteban Hernández Guerrero (ARES).

Exhibition on the centenary of Cuban painter and draftsman Ernesto González Puig. Little known today, his body of work is of impressive quality and suggestive capacity. The show is made up of 45 drawing that illustrate the artist's first production period (1930-1934) and shows a fruitful assimilation of the European avant-garde.

Clothes Lines: Performance Art under the Sun by Ricardo Alberto Pérez Throughout the country, clothes lines dominate the domestic scenery. Simple contraptions, often homemade, are as diverse and unique as this island's citizens. On rooftops, balconies, inner courtyards or back gardens, clothes lines are strung with a Caribbean recklessness that holds everything from kitchen rags that have seen better days to undergarments of every shape, color and size. And all of them are exposed unashamedly too often over public streets, attracting the attention and even photographs of tourists below. A clothes line invites passersby to participate in the lives of the users. Who lives here? What do they like? Just look up. The clothes line tells all. In Havana, and in Cuba more generally, one article stands out on clothes lines: bedsheets. From crib size to king size, bedclothes billow in the wind. And Cubans have clear preferences for flapping white sheets that dazzle in the sun's rays. Okay, there may be a Mickey Mouse bedsheet or two, but it is the flapping white bedsheets that Cuban poets and troubadours have in their poems and songs as symbols of hope and freedom. Hanging out the washing is an art. Which end of a piece of clothing should be hung? Should it be hung dripping wet? Which colors should not be exposed to sunlight and which demand it? For Cubans, even the notion of a ban on using outdoor clothes lines or acts to prevent prohibitions on the use of clothes lines is inconceivable. How bizarre would this be in a country that is flooded with sunlight most of the year? Next time you walk the streets of Havana, look up and be dazzled…or at least be entertained. If the sight of underwear exposed outdoors appalls your sensibilities, then consider the financial and environmental benefits of clothes lines. And let's not forget the fresh smell and soft touch of sun-kissed laundry.

From a composition point of view, Yanes has mastered light, lines and geometrical shapes, reminiscent in some way of abstract art or perhaps a bit of Picassoesque cubism.”

Peter Jones's Cuban trip Peter Jones purchased his first camera in 2007 for no apparent reason. Starting off as a selftaught hobbyist, he initially shot landscape, cityscape and wildlife. After 2 years, he became semiprofessional, selling some of his prints. Now, after 6 years of continued progress, he is a professional. Festival Nacional del Humor Aquelarre June 30 to July 7 Once again, the Aquelarre National Humor Festival takes place during one of the hottest months of the year to ease us into the hot summer days with refreshing performances of the best comedians in the country. With stand-up comedians, variety performers, sketch troupes and much more, the 2013 Aquelarre will officially begin on June 30. The city, however, already began rocking with laughter on June 21 with the show De Doime son los cantantes by 2012 National Humor Award winner Osvaldo Doimeadiós, who is considered Cuba's most important comedian in the last 20 years and will be paid tribute during the festival's closing ceremony. Organized by the Centro Promotor del Humor, the opening and closing ceremonies of this year's Aquelarre will take place at the 8,000-seat Karl Marx Theater in Miramar. Enrique “Kike” Quiñones, the Director of the Centro Promotor del Humor said that this year's program includes workshops (one on drama and situation comedy will be given by Doimeadiós himself), and lectures open to the general public at Casa Cultural ALBA from June 27 to June 30, and a season of Italian comedy films at the 23 y 12 movie theater from July 1 to July 7. The presence of artists from all over Cuba makes Aquelarre different from other festivals. Fifteen groups from 11 different provinces will be participating this year in Cuba's top comedy event, so this will be a fantastic opportunity for both Habaneros and visitors to fully appreciate comedy from the rest of the nation. Year after year, tickets are often sold out days before the shows, so be prepared. If you cannot find a ticket, look for people selling an extra ticket or two for up to five times their value outside of the theater! If you're in town and attend one of the shows, you'll soon realize, paradoxical as it may seem, that Cuban humor--cutting and thought provoking--is actually no laughing matter. Carnaval de Santiago de Cuba July 21-29, 2013 Santiago de Cuba Carnival festivities in Santiago de Cuba date back to colonial times with the annual procession on the feast of Santiago Apóstol, the patron saint of the town. Because this celebration took place in the street, a large number of locals including slaves with permission would join in the celebration of the Epiphany with their own music and dance. This has an effect we see today: the African and Haitian influences in the Santiago de Cuba Carnival-most notable in dance, music, and costumes. The carnivals have always given the people of Santiago a means to release tension, to put aside their worries and dance to the rhythm of conga music. This year, like every year, locals and visitors will keep up the tradition and pour onto the streets in what is considered the most colorful carnival in Cuba. This is one of the most important cultural events in the city: many of its participants spend the whole year preparing their routines for the event. And don't worry, it's a family event. The entire family will either participate in the parade or at least help make costumes or embellish floats. One way or another, everyone will do their bit. Carnival highlights include comparsas(neighborhood dance groups whose choreographies are generally related to Caribbean traditions and the daily life of the people of Santiago) and the processions of decorated floats that will parade, as usual, mainly down Avenida Garzón, where a jury will choose the best. The conga lines are perhaps the most popular element of the carnival, but they are meant to join, not watch.

Right at the end of the procession, mamarrachos (characters in f lamboyant, colorful costumes), muñecones (huge papier mache f igures) and enmascarados (men and women wearing elaborate masks), accompanied by parranderos who with their drums, congas, rattles, catchy choruses and cornetas chinas liven up the event –if that is even possible. Inserted into carnivals as early as 1916, the corneta china, or Chinese horn, was introduced in Cuba by Chinese immigrants, adding another layer to the festivities. In recent years, the festivity has extended to other open areas in the city where live music with son, salsa, merengue as well as rock, pop, and disco will be played by the most popular bands of the moment. Free of all commercialization, the Santiago Carnival is truly an opportunity to celebrate this nation's unique history and culture in a riot of rhythms, drumming and color. Although many Cuban towns hold their own carnivals, none attracts the crowds of the Santiago carnaval, so don't miss out as the whole city moves to the rhythm of conga lines, the sound of the corneta china, bass drums, congas and French drums as well as pots and pans turned into unconventional percussion instruments, which lead dancing crowds down the steep roads of Santiago de Cuba.

Festival del Caribe, Fiesta del Fuego Jul 3-9 Santiago de Cuba Each year in July, the Festival del Caribe, Fiesta del Fuego takes place in Santiago de Cuba. Considered Cuba's most Caribbean city, Santiago is the natural venue for this colorful and joyful celebration that aims at harmonizing the identities of the peoples of the region beyond geographic and linguistic diversity. It also seeks to promote the exchange of opinions and experiences among artists of different styles. Initiated in April 1981, the Festival del Caribe received the support of many Latin American intellectuals, including renowned Cuban Fernández Retamar, Barbadian George Lamming, Dominican Juan Bosch, Brazilian Thiago de Mello, Colombian Gabriel García Márquez and Jamaican Rex Nettleford. One of the reasons why it became so popular so quickly is that it aimed at showcasing a segment of Caribbean folk culture that hadn't yet received the level of recognition it deserved. This year's Fiesta del Fuego will be dedicated to Colombia, a country with a culture and geography very similar to Cuba's. A large number of Colombian artists will participate in the festival, including musical groups Septeto Tabalada, El Sistema Solar and Totó la Mamposina. The latter will have the honor of opening Colombia's cultural venue with a concert on July 4. In addition, there will be over 30 art exhibitions and a selection of over 10 Colombian films shown in different movie theaters in Santiago de Cuba. The Colombian

Ambassador, Gustavo Bell, will give the opening lecture in the colloquium on Caribbean culture, which will include the participation of over 20 scholars from Colombia. The festival will also include book launchings by Colombian and Cuban authors as well as the presentation of the 59th edition of the Revista del Caribe magazine, featuring articles by Colombian authors alone. The 2013 Festival del Caribe will open with the traditional Desfile de la Serpiente, or the Serpent Parade. Locals and visitors seem to enter into a kind of collective trance as they move at conga pace from Plaza de Marte to Parque Céspedes, displaying the spiritual richness of the men and women of the Caribbean. For the next seven days, Santiago de Cuba will get no rest or sleep as its people, the true leading figures of this festival, immerse themselves in the cultural events that will occupy nearly 50 venues in the city. Santiagueros are experts at hosting this 30+-year-old festival, welcoming over 1,000 visitors from all over the Caribbean and beyond. The Quema del Diablo (The Burning of the Demon) marks the end of the festival when all of its participants head to the seaside and there burn the Great Demon, which symbolizes all bad things. When it is burned, it is believed that the way is paved for the next year's meeting. .

July 26, 1953: Attack on Moncada Barracks by Victoria Alcalá July 26th is a truecelebration of Cuban Revolutionary spirit. All across the country, you will see communist banners and political graffiti. Combining the anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti and the attack on the Moncada barracks by Fidel Castro, July 26 is one of the most important days in the country's calendar. On July 26, 1953 a group of young men and two women led by Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba while another group attacked the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks in the city of Bayamo. Although they lost, this event paved the way for the insurrection against Batista. It was “the small engine that ignited the big engine of the Revolution.” Victoria Alcalá writes about Cuban culture. She has won several p r e s t i g i o u s w r i t i n g a w a r d s .

How many countries commemorate a military defeat as their national holiday? Cuba does. In fact, it celebrates the ill-fated events that took place on July 26, 1953 with three days off. The events began one year earlier in May 1952 whena group of young people grouped around Abel and Haydee Santamaría, Melba Hernández and Fidel Castro began meeting in an apartment building in Havana to discuss their discontent with the disruption of the constitutional order imposed by the military coup launched by the dictator Fulgencio Batista. All legal channels Exhausted, plans were made to start the armed struggle and fight the de facto government. Working with people across the country, they began to obtain uniforms, guns and ammunition to attack the Moncada Barracks and other strategic targets. A year later, those who were to participate in the assault traveled to Santiago de Cuba, which was celebrating its traditional summer carnival. The date was chosen so that

the authorities would not suspect the young people who by train, bus and 17 cars were coming into the city with the apparent purpose of enjoying themselves during the festivities. The leaders of the attack were hoping that the relaxed atmosphere, the distance from the capital, the surprise factor, and the nearby mountains of the Sierra Maestra would help them achieve their goal. Upon their arrival in Santiago, the revolutionaries gathered together at the small Siboney farm located near the city. During early morning, the guns hidden inside a well were distributed. Then, the details of the attack, which had been kept in the utmost secrecy by the leaders, were given. —They were going to attack the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks and take over two strategic places, the Saturnino Lora Hospital and the Palace of Justice. The objectives: to disarm the enemy and summon the people to take armed revolutionary action that would lead to the overthrow of Batista. At 4:00 am on Sunday, July 26th, 129 men and two women left the Siboney farm. The plan was to have the main body of the inexperienced troops (around 90 men) led by Fidel Castro, advance to the army facility; the two women (Melba Hernández and Haydee Santamaría) and other fighters, led by Abel Santamaría, would take over the hospital; and the group of around 35 men led by Raul Castro would seize the Palace of Justice. The last two groups were able to achieve their goal, but the group led by Fidel, lost the element of surprise: after reaching one of the posts, an unexpected patrol that was doing the rounds because of the carnival came across them. They alerted the guards at the barrack's troops and a battle ensued outside the garrison. Given the disadvantage of the assailants, many fled to the foothills of the Sierra Maestra, where they were captured several days later.

Besieged by Color in Havana by Ricardo Alberto Pérez Sometimes tourists see things that locals don't. In fact, sometimes tourists open our eyes to see our own city in an entirely new light. This occurred to me recently when a visitor from abroad started speaking to me, visibly excited, about the exuberant colors emanating from Havana's architecture. Colourful? This caught me offguard so, I decided to reacquaint myself with the city's façades. It did not take long to understand why so many tourists are amazed with the city's tremendously varied and vigorous colors. Havana's colorful architecture is a product of its historical development. Havana of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was a highly colored urban space. Chronicles written by Dutch, English, French and Spanish visitors provide an image of Havana as a city painted in blue and green. After all this was the period in which the wellknown “colonial blue” was born. These colours, of course, were highlighted by the highly elaborate roofs done in the Moorish style. All you have to do is gaze upon the old colonial house at the corner of Teniente Rey and Aguiar in the heart of Old Havana to see one of the best examples of Havana' colonial architecture. The nineteenth century witnessed a new addition to many of the buildings: stained glass windows that bathed the architecture with color. Most of the houses surrounding Plaza Vieja, for instance, contain entrance porches, held up by slim arcades and columns, that boast stained glass details.

Art-deco decoration also made appearance as seen in the Fausto Theatre on Paseo del Prado with its pure art deco façade faced with a mixture of white cement and stone dust that reflect color changes in its illumination. Then there is the home of Catlina Lasa and Juan Pedro Baró on Paseo Street between 17th and 19th with its art deco pantheon with a stained-glass window commissioned by Pedro to commemorate his wife's early death. The arrival of the Modernist Movement in Cuba marked another important turning point. In this case, Cuban gaze was redirected away from Europe. No longer were European styles simply copied. Instead, a distinct Cuban architectural culture was born, resulting from the adaptation to the climate and the use of native materials. This provided an important spark that gradually changed the image of the city. Architects such as Nicolás Arroyo, Gabriela Menéndez and Antonio Quintana were supported by artists such as Amelia Peláez, Wifredo Lam and René Portocarrero and buildings such as the Habana Libre Hotel, the Retiro Odontológico, and the Riviera Hotel were born. The city is a reflection of the nation. Much like with the mixing of so many races and cultures, the architecture has benefited from the mixing of so many traditions making the eclectic buildings “sing within the symphony of the city”.

The Republican Period turned Havana into the eclectic city that it is known as today. The majestic mansiosn of El Vedado are richly decorated both inside and out. Built in 1927, the home of José Gómez Mena and María Luisa, Countess of Revilla de Camargo, at 17th Street on the corner of E, is a striking example.

Conner Gorry's best live music venues in Havana From Grammy winners to surprisingly accomplished minstrels plying the Malecón, Cuba is a music Mecca. I think it's fair to say that if you don't experience music that moves you in the hips, heart, or elsewhere in your island travels, you're missing the point. Unfortunately, not all the venues around town match the quality of the music being made, to say nothing of the technology and people hired to run it – audio equipment and lighting design can be nothing short of horrendous. Then there's what we call 'ambiente' in these parts, the atmosphere of a place, which can make or break a venue in terms of audience experience. Certain Havana venues have terrific (or at least sufficient) technology and the people to run it as well as such a great atmosphere that they compensate for other shortcomings. Though it's hotter than Hades, summer is a great time to be here since cultural offerings are in full swing, with many free concerts, interesting music festivals, and visiting musicians.

Maxim Rock Calle Bruzón #62, near Carlos III & Ayesterán Located in a quiet, off-the-tourist-track neighborhood behind the Terminal de Omnibus, this club run by the Agencia de Rock must have had design input from local moshers and music makers: the audio and lights are some of the city's best, there is plenty of room to stage press and head bang, and there's awesome air conditioning – what Cubans call el pingüino – the penguin. It's also big enough to accommodate those who just want to hang back and out. Since the legendary Patio de María was closed, this is the best place to see hard rock and metal bands like Zeus and Hipnosis.

Salon Rosado de La Tropical Avenida 41 & Calle 46 There's something extra special about outdoor venues, and this salsa palace in Playa is an all-time favorite. Whether you hit the big open dance floor or overlook the scene from one of the balconies above, this place has an unrivaled energy. While regguetón/cubatón and timba are standard musical fare here (think La Micha; Paulo FG; Pupy y Los Son Son) rock and pop acts – Interactivo, Descemer Bueno, Raúl Paz – also gig occasionally at the Salon Rosado. This is also HQ for the annual Pro Electronica music festival; this year's event takes place on July 13 (7pm-11am) and features dozens of electronic acts from around the island. Privé Calle 88A #306 between 3ra & 3raA This is the city's first private music club, an arrangement made possible thanks to Cuba's ongoing economic reforms, and it combines comfort, quality music, and a chill atmosphere brilliantly. It's snug – the stage accommodates a trio comfortably, a quartet if the musicians squeeze in a lo cubano – but design elements like drop down noise- and echo-dampening panels mean it has terrific audio, plus the musicians who play here (Harold López-Nussa; Oliver Valdés; Aldo LópezGavilán) are among the country's best. It can get loud with chattering youth and there are some seats with blocked sight lines, but you can't have it all – or so they keep telling me.

Teatro Bellas Artes Calle Trocadero between Calle Agramonte & Avenida de las Misiones This theater in the Museo de Bellas Artes/Cuban Collection is a sweet, intimate room where the wall between musicians and audience is regularly toppled. The roof used to leak right into the fifth row, but since that was fixed, this is one of the city's top venues featuring all musical genres. Judging by the big names who play here, it's also a favorite of local musicians: I've seen memorable shows in this theater by Omara Portuondo, Tesis de Menta, and Yasek Manzano. Buy tickets in advance for big name acts since the theater only seats 200 and will sell out (it's not uncommon for the stairs and aisles, as well as the seats, to be packed).

Café Cantante Paseo & Calle 39 There's always something grotty and off-putting about basement clubs and this place in the nether regions of the Teatro Nacional fit the bill perfectly until a recent major overhaul. I'm surprised how nicely this club cleaned up; it actually feels hip, which is has been a slow learning curve for state-run establishments. The air condition works, there's plenty of seating, good audio and clean sight lines to the stage. Los Kents (rock 'n roll covers); Qva Libre (wildly popular rock/fusion); and Santiago Feliú (trova superstar) have regular gigs here. This venue also has historic significance since it's where Nueva Trova solidified as a movement,

3A Y FINAL # 11, LA PUNTILLA, MIRAMAR, HAVANA, CUBA Amazingly for a city by the sea Havana has precious few places to eat with a view of the ocean. Rio Mar, on the other hand has a whole terrace overlooking the spot where the Rio Almendares flows into the sea, opposite the historic 1830 Club. This little bay may be sheltered, but it gives you a sense and smell of the ocean without the waves. Since the opening in February 2012, it has gone straight to the top of most expatriate pop charts for dining options. This is on account of not just the fabulous location but, attentive service, great food and an attention to minimalist elegant décor. While you can sit inside, it is really the terrace that draws you into Rio Mar.

July 2013: Elena's ups & downs to dining out in Havana by Elena Vega

DOWNS: Arrogance at La Cocina de Liliam Calle 48 No 1311 entre 13 y 15, Playa. Tel. 209 6514 It is a pity that such a beautiful paladar can be ruined by the arrogant attitude of the staff who act as if the world is not worthy of them. This was the place that Jimmy Carter came back in 2001 and before the new wave of paladares opened, this was one of the few class acts in town. Although the Havana dining scene has now changed, they seem not to have got the memo. Friends of mine were recently asked never to come back here after an argument with the waiter who refused to serve them more bread at 11 p.m. Go figure. I don't care if the rich and famous come here, I still believe even little old me is always right – I am the customer after all.

Closing of Chaplin's What a shame. This paladar started off on the right foot. Conveniently located in Miramar, the décor was chic, the trendy food good and the service friendly. Sadly not long after the opening, the overall quality of the place seemed to stall and then go downhill. Even best efforts to set the right ambience with a violin player seemed to backfire. In my last visit, I had to wait about 20 minutes for a glass of wine while my main dish was finally brought to the table when my friends had already finished eating. So, Chaplin's is no more. Viva Chaplins.

Cover charge at La Fontana Calle 3ra A esq. 46. Miramar. Playa. Tel. 202 8337 La Fontana is a great restaurant with consistently good food, great service and a nice ambience. Recently they have introduced jazz nights inviting top class Cuban jazz musicians to play while you eat. So far, so good. The only issue is with a cover charge of CUC 5 per person, which they add to the final bill without necessarily saying up front (or charging at the door). If you love jazz (and know about the charge), I am sure that no-one will mind. Ror some of us, however, this can be a real annoyance, especially if you prefer rock and roll.

Tel. 203 6908 Los Compadres bills itself as a Mexican place, has a Mexican partner and even a mariachi band, BUT most of the menu is actually more international andCuban than Mexican. Sensitive to the criticism in recent weeks, they have started to introduce some more authentic Mexican fare including my favorite, the Tampiqueña steak. Cut thinly (as it should be) and served with tortillas, refried beans and a homemade pico de gallo, it is truly excellent. Thumbs up. Wash it down with a couple of margaritas!

The opening of Bikos Calle 19 #1010, esq. 12. Vedado. Tel. 831 8847 This bar opened in June 2013 and promises to be a great addition to the paladar and bar scene in Havana. The décor is interesting and carries an African theme accentuated with custom made chairs that resemble the original Coppelia chairs. This has more of a bar than restaurant feel with a large selection of tapas, wine and cocktails that one can enjoy in an open terrace or over a comfortable sofa inside the air conditioned area. Bikos also offers breakfasts that include fresh fruit, home made juices, and (I have been told) Benedictine eggs that are to die for…

Prices at Casa Lala Calle 24 e/ 23 y 21. Plaza de la Revolución. Tel. 830 1410 Havana Chef has had a make-over and a name change to Casa Lala. It has the same delicious menu (including the suckling pig that I talked about in a previous column), but with lower prices. The place is pleasant with an open space that manages to stay breeze and cool even during the hot Cuban summer. On top of all this, the service is very friendly. Do not miss the chorizos cooked in wine and the fresh pastas!

Points rewards at Star Bien Calle 29 #205, entre B y C. Vedado. Tel. 830 0711 I love the efforts that some paladares are going to in order to distinguish themselves. Star Bien, a lovely place in Vedado, has gone so far as to create a points reward system. The more you go and the more you spend, the more points you get and, of course, you can use those points for “free stuff” in the restaurant. I went back with some friends for lunch recently and we were informed that we had accumulated 35 points in our last two visits, which gives us enough money for two entrees or for a good bottle of wine.
