El encanto del primero es evidente y el atractivo del segundo parece lejano e inimaginable. ¿Es raro que nos distraigamos por los bienes materiales y el dinero? Y sin embargo se nos pide que renunciemos a algo por otra cosa. Con razón debemos pedir sabiduría como el primer don. Ella nos guiará para saber qué es lo correcto y para conocer la diferencia entre lo que es bueno y lo que es mejor. SÍGANME Jesús le hace una invitación, no sólo al joven rico, sino a todos nosotros que estamos tan abrumados por cosas materiales a donde quiera que vayamos. El mensaje que sólo encontraremos la felicidad en los bienes y los lujos es una mentira que la mayoría de nosotros cree fácilmente. Nuestra hambre espiritual, que surge de esta propaganda es abrumado por la astuta promesa que hacen tantos publicistas sosteniendo que su producto alimenta "tu alma". Pero estas "cosas" no pueden alimentar nuestra alma, porque sólo la Sabiduría perfecta, la Palabra, Cristo, puede hacerlo. "Es imposible para los hombres, mas. . . para Dios todo es posible" (Marcos 10:27). Necesitamos sabiduría para escuchar lo que realmente nos dice nuestro corazón: cómo seguir a Aquel que es la Sabiduría y la Vida. ¿Quién hubiese imaginado que un día estaríamos felices de haber sufrido? Se nos promete ser librados de todo mal y que sólo tendremos cosas buenas y vida eterna en Dios.

TREASURE IN HEAVEN We have two concepts to compare in today's readings: earthly treasure and heavenly treasure. The allure of the first is all too apparent, and the appeal of the second seems far away and unimaginable. Is it any wonder that we get distracted by material things and by money? And yet we are asked to give up something for something else. No wonder we need to pray for wisdom as the first gift. She will lead us to know the right thing to do, and to tell the difference between what is good and what is better. The word of God, living and effective, is able to accomplish what it promises, for everything is exposed to God who sees and knows all things, even in the recesses of the human heart. God's Word, Jesus, is identified with Wisdom: the gift of God that leads us to eternal life.

FOLLOW ME Jesus issues an invitation, not only to the rich young man, but to all of us who are so swamped by material things everywhere we turn. The message that we will only find happiness in goods and luxuries is a lie that most of us buy into rather readily. Our spiritual hunger, beginning to emerge from this stew, is overwhelmed by the cunning promise made by so many advertisers that their product feeds "your soul." But these "things" cannot feed our soul, for only the perfect Wisdom, the Word, the Christ, can do that. "For human beings it is impossible, but . . . [all] things are possible for God" (Mark 10:27). We need wisdom to listen to what our hearts really tell us: how to follow the One who is Wisdom and Life. Who could possibly have imagined that we would one day be glad for having suffered? We are promised deliverance from all evil, and we shall have all good things and eternal life in God.

40 Days for Life-Dallas Respect Life Month Mass, Adoration & Rosary Procession for an End to Abortion in Dallas, October 20. The Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. by Dallas A uxiliary Bishop Doug Deshotel at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9643 Ferndale Rd., Dallas 75238, with special prayers for the unborn and an end to abortion. Mass will include a Special Blessing of all Respect Life Ministers and Volunteers (all those involved in any pro-life ministry as staff or volunteers are invited to receive this blessing). Mass will be followed by Eucharistic Adoration and a Rosary Procession led by Fr. Josef Vollmer-König by bus to the Southwestern late-term abortion center, 8616 Greenville Ave., Dallas 75243 (NE corner of Royal & Greenville) – the site of the Fall 40 Days for Life-Dallas Vigil.
