Session 1 LEARNING FOCUSES LI.K.1, LI.K.7
Students read closely to ask and answer questions about key details in the text and to describe how the text and the photographs are related.
VOCABULARY L.K.5a Read the title of the
book aloud. Ask students to echo you. Then ask and answer questions about different kinds of flowers that students are familiar with. Tell students that all the types they named fit into the category of “Flores”.
PREVIEWING THE TEXT
5 minutes
Read the title, author credit, and back cover text with students. Invite students to study the photos on the front and back covers. Nuestro libro de hoy se llama Flores. Miren con cuidado la foto de la portada. ¿Quién quiere compartir lo que ve? Veo flores rojas y una flor amarilla. Veo muchos tulipanes rojos, un tulipán amarillo y hojas verdes. ¿Quién quiere decir de qué trata este libro? Probablemente trata de un jardín con flores. Leamos el texto de la contraportada. . . ¿Qué los ayuda a entender la contraportada? El libro trata de colores y nombres de flores.
READING THE TEXT CLOSELY
10 minutes
Invite students to read page 2. Discuss the text and the photo. ¿Quién quiere compartir lo que ha notado sobre esta flor? Se ve grande. Tiene bordes irregulares. Algunas partes apuntan hacia abajo y algunas hacia arriba. Es morada. Sí, esta flor tiene esas características. ¿Qué nos dice el texto sobre esta flor? Es morada. Señalemos la palabra morada y leámosla en conjunto. Explain the learning focuses to students. Have them read page 3. Check to see how they are doing with the application of the focuses. Provide support if needed.
Corrective Feedback Have students closely reread the title and first sentence in order to ask a question about a key detail. Encourage them to silently or softly reread line by line and look at the pictures, stopping to think and talk together about their understandings.
2 FLORES
If you are satisfied that students can apply the learning focuses, read the rest of the book with them. If you are not, prompt students to return to pages 2–3 to use key details in the text and photos to ask and answer questions. Nuestro trabajo como lectores es hacer y responder preguntas sobre detalles del texto y de las fotos. Vamos a usar lo que aprendamos con nuestras preguntas para ver qué dice el texto sobre las fotos. También hablaremos sobre cómo podemos usar las fotos para entender el texto. Terminemos de leer el libro.
DISCUSSING THE TEXT
10 minutes
Invite students to share some of the questions they had as they read this book. Guide them to use the photos to help them understand key details in the text. Veamos las páginas 2 a 7. ¿Quién puede compartir una pregunta que haya tenido al leer? ¿Por qué las flores tienen diferentes formas? ¿Quién puede responder esa pregunta? Hay flores de diferentes tipos. Veo que en la página 8 están los nombres de diferentes tipos de flores.
AE.K.3 DISCUSSION Collaborative
DISCUSSION TIP Reassure students that it is okay to ask questions in order to get help or clarify something they don’t understand.
¿Qué aprendieron sobre las flores a partir del texto? Hay muchas flores de diferentes colores. Hablemos de lo que nos muestran las fotos. También hay flores de diferentes tamaños y formas. Focus on the color words in the text: morada, roja, rosa, blanca, azul, amarilla. A veces, diferentes palabras pertenecen a una misma categoría. Por ejemplo, lluvia y viento son palabras del estado del tiempo. Leamos las páginas para ver qué palabras encajan en una misma categoría.
L.K.5a VOCABULARY Sort Words
Hay un nombre de un color en cada página. Muchas palabras se pueden colocar en la categoría “Nombres de colores”. ¿Qué palabras de este libro encajan en esta categoría? morada, roja, rosa, blanca, azul, amarilla Confirm students’ good use of the learning focuses and encourage them to keep the focuses in mind whenever they read informational texts. Hicieron y respondieron preguntas sobre todo el libro. También vieron que cada oración hablaba sobre la foto de arriba. Las fotos los ayudaron a entender lo que decía cada oración. Piensen en estas cosas al leer otros libros que tengan fotos.

Session 2 LEARNING FOCUSES LI.K.1, LI.K.4
Students return to the text to read closely and to ask and answer questions about key details. Students also expand their questions and answers to include unknown words.
TEACHER TIP You might find it necessary to model asking and answering a question about the text.
RETURNING TO THE TEXT
5 minutes
Ask students to reflect on their reading in Session 1. Guide them to recall how they applied the learning focuses to their reading. Repasemos lo que dijimos cuando leímos el libro Flores en la sesión anterior. Dijimos que el texto habla sobre las fotos y que las fotos nos ayudan a entender el texto. Varios de ustedes hicieron preguntas sobre el texto y las fotos. Algunos hallaron las respuestas a medida que leíamos y veíamos las fotos.
READING THE TEXT CLOSELY
10 minutes
Explain the new learning focus. Invite students to reread pages 2 and 3. Check to see how well they have understood the new focus. If you are satisfied that students can apply them, set the reading assignment for the session. If not, provide corrective feedback as suggested on page 2 of this lesson plan. A medida que volvamos a leer hoy, recordemos lo que dijimos antes sobre las palabras de cada página. Son iguales excepto por el nombre del color. Así saben lo que verán cuando miren y lean una página. Sin embargo, tal vez se den cuenta de que no conocen todas las palabras. Asegúrense de hacer una pregunta sobre la palabra si no la entienden.
ACADEMIC SYNTAX SUPPORT LI.K.1 Discussing the Text Ask questions at students’ language proficiency levels and provide the following sentence frame for student responses: P: ¿Qué es ___? ¿Por qué ___? ¿Dónde ___? I/A: Quiero saber qué significa ___. Hallé la respuesta de mi pregunta. Es ___.
Volvamos al texto de la página 2. Noté que la quinta palabra es la palabra que es diferente en esta página. ¿Qué significa esta palabra? Es un color. ¿Quién me puede decir qué color es? morado Otra palabra para este color es violeta. ¿Alguno ha escuchado esta palabra antes? Yo la he escuchado. Creo que también es el nombre de una flor. Correcto. ¿Puede alguien nombrar otra cosa que sea morada? Algunas uvas son moradas. La camiseta de ella es morada. ¿Y en la página 3? ¿Tienen preguntas sobre algo en esa página? ¿Qué tipo de flor es esta? Veamos los nombres de las flores en la página 8. Esta es una rosa. Formative Assessment: Phonics and Fluency Listen to each student read a portion of the text. Observe whether they pronounce words with the letter sound /m/ and /g/ such as morada and girasol (pp. 2-8). Pay close attention to fluency as well. If students need additional practice with decoding, reading sight words, or fluency, provide the necessary support at the end of the session. Ask students to note words or phrases they find challenging for discussion after the reading.
4 FLORES
DISCUSSING THE TEXT
10 minutes
Support a discussion in which students ask and answer questions that focus on key details and unknown words. ¿Qué es igual de la página 2 a la 7? Cada oración dice un color de una flor. Veamos la página 8. ¿Qué preguntas pueden hacer sobre la página 8? ¿Por qué todas las fotos están aquí? ¿Qué son estas palabras debajo de las fotos? Veamos si podemos hallar las respuestas.
AE.K.3 DISCUSSION Collaborative
DISCUSSION TIP A good way for students to make sure they understand is for them to ask questions. Guide them to answer their own questions.
Guide students to create a new category to show words that are related to a concept on page 8.
L.K.5a VOCABULARY Sort Words
En la última sesión creamos una categoría llamada “Nombres de colores”. ¿Qué palabras de este libro colocamos en esa categoría? morada, roja, rosa, blanca, azul, amarilla ¿Quién recuerda cómo se usaron estos nombres de colores en el texto? Nombran los colores de las flores. Ahora bien, en la página 8 hallamos muchas otras palabras que nombran las flores. ¿En qué categoría podemos colocar estas palabras? nombres de flores Digamos las palabras que van en esta categoría. tulipán, iris, rosa, dalia, clematis, jacinto, girasol, margarita Explain to students that as they discussed the text, they asked and answered questions about key details and about unknown words. Entendieron que pueden hacer y responder preguntas a medida que leen como ayuda para entender el texto. También me mostraron que pueden hallar las respuestas de las preguntas en las palabras y las fotos. Cuando leen un libro informativo, ¿por qué es importante hacer y responder preguntas? Al hacer preguntas, pensamos en lo que no entendemos. Al hallar la respuesta, el texto se aclara. Confirm students’ good use of the focuses and encourage them to keep the focuses in mind whenever they read reports or other informational texts. Identificaron detalles clave del texto y leyeron para hallar las respuestas de sus preguntas. Traten de hacer lo mismo cuando lean otro libro informativo.

LF.K.3a PHONICS & WORD RECOGNITION Letter-Sound Correspondence
TEACHER’S
CHOICE PHONICS AND FLUENCY FOLLOW-UP Phonics Practice Practice letter-sound correspondence by having students help create word lists from their reading. For example, students might go through the book and find words that begin with the /m/ sound. Have students help you make a list of all the words they find. Use the New Sound routine to practice. Vamos a seguir practicando las letras y los sonidos. Vamos a buscar todas las palabras del libro que empiezan con el sonido /m/. (Write the letter and say the sound). Escuchen el sonido de esta letra. (Say the sound for the consonant). Digan el sonido. (Students say the sound). Vamos a revisar el libro y buscar más palabras con este sonido. ¿Quién encontró una palabra? (Student says word). Escuchen el sonido en esta palabra. Digan la palabra. (Students say the word). Repitan el sonido otra vez. (Students say the sound). Repeat with other words.
LF.K.4 FLUENCY Purpose & Understanding
Fluency Practice Remind students that labels are made up of only a few words. Model reading the sentences on pages 6 and 7. Then model reading one or two labels from page 8. Have students echo your reading. Discuss the differences between how sentences and labels are read. TEACHER’S
LI.K.1 COMPREHENSION Ask & Answer Questions
CHOICE COMPREHENSION: ASK AND ANSWER QUESTIONS E-RESOURCE Formative Assessment Have students use the blackline master
on page 11 to ask and answer questions about key details in Flores. Have students tell you and/or a partner what their questions are before they write and draw their answers. Review students’ responses as you evaluate their mastery of the learning focus. TEACHER’S

CHOICE CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE: COLLECT TEXT EVIDENCE E-RESOURCE Formative/Summative Assessment Use the blackline master
on page 12 to introduce the constructed response question: ¿En qué se diferencian las flores del libro? Usa detalles de Flores para responder la pregunta. Puedes escribir y dibujar. Have students use self-stick notes to mark places in the book that help them answer the question. Point out that the details they include can come from the photos, as well as the main text. Review students’ self-stick notes as you evaluate their mastery of the learning focus.
Session 3 RETURNING TO THE TEXT
5 minutes
Explain that students will reread the book again. This time they will use what they have learned in the past two sessions to ask questions about the text, unknown words, and photos, and look for answers as they read. Observe students and make a judgment as to whether or not they need additional support. Ya hemos leído el texto y hemos visto las fotos. Cuando volvamos a leer, veamos si hay alguna palabra que todavía no entiendan. También fíjense bien en las fotos y piensen en cómo muestran lo que dice el texto. Y no olviden hacer cualquier pregunta sobre el texto o las fotos que los ayude a aprender más sobre las flores. ¿Por qué creen que es importante seguir haciendo preguntas y buscar respuestas?
LEARNING FOCUSES LI.K.1, LI.K.4, LI.K.7
Students closely reread the text to ask and answer questions about key details and unknown words, and to continue to relate photographs to the text while using text evidence.
Tal vez pasé algo por alto cuando leí anteriormente. Descubro algo nuevo cada vez que veo las fotos.
READING THE TEXT CLOSELY
10 minutes
Review the learning focuses and invite students to read page 5. Check to see how well they understand the focuses. Then encourage students to reread the book, paying attention to how the photos illustrate the text, and thinking of questions they have about key details and unknown words. Leamos el texto de la página 5. ¿Cómo está relacionada la foto con el texto?
VOCABULARY LI.K.4 Have students keep a vocabulary notebook in which they write or draw meanings of new words they encounter in their reading.
DISCUSSING THE TEXT
10 minutes
Generate a discussion that links the three learning focuses. Remind students to find key details in the text and in the photos. Encourage them to ask questions about any part of the text or photos, especially about words that are still unknown or hard.
