EDITOR’S NOTE

2022:

YEAH, WHATEVER FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2023

Let’s start with the good news: For the 13th consecutive year, the New York Yankees failed to even get into the World Series. That’s about it, I’m afraid. In this year of tribulations, ground war returned to Europe courtesy of Vladimir Putin and the Delta Variant created yet another wave of social media epidemiologists, “advancing” science 280 characters at a time. Roe v Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court, prompting yet another massive run on Handmaiden Tale outfits, p*&Sy hats and bad constitutional takes on social media. The dread hand of fascism and the death of democracy were discerned from the highest court in the land actually reversing its previous power grab and allowing the issue to return to the democratic process in the various states. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden decided on his own to forgive a trillion dollars of student debt without congressional approval, in direct contravention of the Constitution, and was hailed as a savior of democracy. The Spirit of ’06 (1/6/21, that is) was kept alive just long enough to reach the midterms by a congressional committee handpicked by the famously impartial Nancy Pelosi and chaired by a former election-denier. Having dispensed with the unpleasantness of hearing opposing views by rejecting members selected by the GOP leadership, Pelosi’s choice for her Potemkin Republican “representation” were two congressmen whose public condemnation of the subject of the inquiry – Trump - would have made John Dean blush. The proceedings were marred, however, by the inexplicable presence of kangaroos throughout the hearing. Inflation returned as a dominant economic issue after wallowing for several decades. The Biden administration devised a series of creative policy proposals designed to address the issue that went something like this (in order): simply deny that inflation exists; admit that it exists but downplay it as “temporary;” admit that, yes, well, it isn’t temporary but it’s really the fault of Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, despite the

fact that the majority of inflation occurred prior to the invasion; admit that, well, yes, there was some inflation before the invasion, but that was the fault of the previous administration and those bastards at the Fed; and, finally, lie about the statistics and say “problem solved.” When asked about his policy, the President responded “hey, Jack, we held the Senate.” You can’t really argue with that. On the immigration front, the term “Sanctuary City” took a beating as one such self-proclaimed community, Martha’s Vineyard, summer home to some of the wealthiest people in America (including former President Obama), was surprised to find 48 – 48 – undocumented migrants disembarking on to their island courtesy of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Displaying a true “sanctuary” mentality, within 24 hours the residents had successfully petitioned the Governor to call in the National Guard to remove them to a nearby military base, and within 48 hours all traces of the immigrants were gone… except a GoFund me page set up by the residents for the residents to offset their (the residents’) suffering. One apparently sober observer described it as viewing “the best of humanity.” On the sports front here locally, the Cubs regressed to the median, while the Sox missed the playoffs despite (because of?) the documented fact that manager Tony LaRussa stayed awake for the majority of Sox games. LaRussa won’t be managing the Sox next year. Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks? Nevermind (although the Legend of Justine Fields may be THE story of 2023). Finally, we lost Angela Lansbury, Sidney Poitier, Loretta Lynn, Gilbert Gottfried, Christine McVie, Meat Loaf and the extraordinary Queen Elizabeth. Requiescat In Pace. Here’s to a better 2023.

NERO O SSID IA NA Tenuta Castellaro, Nero Ossidiana, (Corinto Nero/Nero d'AvolaRed Blend), Lipari, Sicily, 2017 - $37.99 - 10% off for January 2023 Wine of the Month! "This wine has a strong and decisive character, lit by the sunsets of Lipari like the fire of volcanoes. The first, great classic red wine of Aeolian Islands with an enveloping and decisive structure. Nero Ossidiana is a red wine that testifies to our desire to enhance the indigenous vineyards and the great organoleptic properties of the terroir of the Aeolian Islands, which perfectly balances the beautiful acidity and elegance of the Corinto Nero with the soft warmth of Nero d'Avola. The colour of the wine is deep ruby red, it is complex and structured and presents itself to the palate with juicy shades of red fruit, intriguing aromas of spices and musk on the nose. Expresses notes of cherry and spices that blend with the intriguing salty side of black Corinth for an enveloping olfactory complexity Nero Ossidiana expresses all the typicality of a land that is both volcanic and marine, representing the union between the island and the sea." ~ Tenuta Castellaro Winery Notes. BUSINESS PROFILE

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2023

Over 20 years ago Sam Mashal started his

company called Midwest Detail & Powerwash. While originally coming up with an idea to power wash semitrucks, and detail cars, after a few years in business Sam wound up power washing and staining a deck for one of his friends, which ended up changing his business model. He loved the idea of working with individual homeowners on backyard projects. As he progressed, he got in touch with local stain vendors, learned the process by meeting with vendor reps as he educated himself on how to stain decks, and eventually added patio sealing to the equation a year down the road. He wanted to ensure he could give his customers the best process, the right process, and most of all the best service at a fair price. As time went on, Sam spent the years building his business around the Fox Valley area. Through his experience, he is able to provide a very hands-on, detailed description to his customers about the right process to be used when staining their deck or sealing their patios. When asking Sam what sets his company apart from other companies that may offer these services, Sam said he feels that since deck staining and patio sealing are the only two areas his company works in, it allows him to give the customer a great experience, with a professional that deals with either service on a daily

basis. As far as being in business for over 20 years, when Sam is asked what helped him continue to stay in business that long, and he said customer service goes a long way. “Answer your customers phone calls, show up when you say you are going to show up, and make sure you are upfront and honest about your process. It’s the little things that people appreciate!” Midwest Detail & Powerwash would like to celebrate being in business for 20 plus years by extending a 25% discount for early Spring sign-ups for any customers that would like to join their schedule this spring. WHEN IT COMES TO KNEE SURGERY, YOU HAVE OPTIONS BY F OX V A L L E Y O R TH OPED I C S

When knee pain interferes with living an active lifestyle and conservative measures are no longer effective, knee surgery may be recommended. Here are five common types of knee surgery. ACL Reconstruction ACL reconstruction is typically performed when the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) has been completely torn. This can happen due to a traumatic injury, such as a fall or a collision, or it can occur gradually over time due to degenerative changes in the joint. ACL reconstruction surgery involves using a graft to replace the damaged ligament, secured with surgical screws and anchors. The surgery is typically performed using an arthroscope, a small camera that is inserted into the joint through tiny incisions. This allows the surgeon to see inside the joint and repair the damage with minimal disruption to the surrounding tissues. FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2023

Knee Replacement The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons states that over 700,000 people in the United States undergo knee replacement surgery each year, making it one of the most common surgical procedures performed today. There are several reasons why someone may need a knee replacement, from osteoarthritis to extensive damage to their knee joints and post-traumatic arthritis.

C-shaped disc that cushions your knee. A meniscectomy may be performed to treat knee pain that doesn't respond to other treatments. During a meniscectomy, your surgeon will make an incision in your knee and then remove the damaged part of the meniscus. In some cases, your surgeon may be able to repair the damage rather than remove it. This is typically done as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day.

The procedure can be done to one or both knees, though each knee is completed during separate surgeries. It involves replacing the damaged joint with an artificial one made from metal and plastic. The surgery usually takes about two hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

As with any medical treatment, individual results may vary. The performance of knee replacements depends on age, weight, activity level, and other factors. There are potential risks and recovery takes time. People with conditions limiting rehabilitation should not have knee replacement surgery. Only an orthopedic surgeon can determine if knee or hip replacement is required based on an individual patient's condition.

FVO also offers robotic-assisted knee replacement. This surgical procedure allows the surgeon to customize the implants to fit the patient’s specific anatomy with reproducible accuracy and less trauma to soft tissue. Lateral Release Lateral release is performed when the kneecap is not tracking correctly, commonly caused by the overgrowth of bone outside the knee joint. This overgrowth is called lateral patellar facet syndrome, which can cause pain and discomfort. The surgical procedure involves an incision on the outside of the knee and removing the overgrown bone. This will help relieve the knee joint's pressure and improve mobility. Meniscectomies Meniscectomies are performed to remove damaged or torn pieces of the meniscus (the shock-absorbing tissue within the knee joint). A meniscectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the meniscus, a rubbery,

CARIN LEON FRIDAY, JANUARY 27 8:00 PM Possessed of a rich, dramatic, tenor singing voice, a storyteller's gift for narrative, and dazzling instrumental skills, Sonoran musician Carin Leon is a triple threat: He is the chief songwriter, guitarist, and producer of the charting Mexican Regional band Grupo Arranke, a professional songwriter for artists including Christian Nodal, Cutaes de Sinaloa, and Adriel Favela, and a charting solo artist. His artistic mission lies in recovering the roots and ranchera essence at the heart of Mexican Regional music. Leon's songs constantly blur the lines between ranchera, banda, mariachi, and corridos. Since launching a solo career in 2018, Leon has recorded more than 80 songs, including the Top Ten Mexican Regional hit "Me La Avente" from 2019's popular full-length El Malo. Along with releasing his own albums like 2021's Inédito, he remains a member of Grupo Arranke, a charting machine all on their own. ( Written By Thom Jurek)

BHS PRESENTS: MURDER ON THE RERUN JANUARY 26 – 28, 2023 Takes a different approach to mystery as a ghost tries to find out who murdered her in a witty, sophisticated, yet suspenseful look at the upper crust of Hollywood. The curtain rises to find Jane, Oscar winning screen writer, dead at the bottom of the stairs in a Vermont ski lodge. Her four friends and husband are saying she fell. "I was pushed!" she says as her ghost rises. Aided by Kitty, a rather wanton adviser from "up there," Jane is brought ahead to the present, three years after the murder, where the same group is gathered. They are all famous film makers with an intense hate love relationship; Jane's husband who has married an ambitious ingenue, a heading for middle age leading lady, an arrogant director, and Hollywood's reigning gossip columnist. The five suspects join together to keep the possible murder quiet for reasons of their own but their relationship busts apart with their mutual distrust. Woven through the suspense in humorous, acidic, and revealing comedy is an extraordinary whodunit with a surprise denouement when the murderer is revealed. All the roles are lengthy with well defined characters. For the unusual and audience pleasing combination of comedy, intrigue, and suspense, this is a must! FoxValleyMagazine.com

“THE MYTH OF CLOSURE”

The Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA), located at 425 Fawell Blvd. on the College of DuPage campus, will host a solo exhibition of works by Puerto-Rican born multidisciplinary artist Edra Soto, opening Dec. 10 and on view through March 5, 2023. In this new series of works entitled, “The Myth of Closure | El Mito del Cierre,” Soto has transformed her practice to honor the loss of what once was, while seeking a path of acceptance for the transition of her aging mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s. She channels her struggle to reconcile this new reality through deconstruction, collage and familiar themes in her art practice. “The Myth of Closure | El Mito del Cierre” is a deeply personal body of work exploring loss, the now complicated associations of home, and figurative closure. This new work builds on an ongoing project entitled, “GRAFT.” Soto began using this series of architectural interventions in 2012 and it consists of representations of rejas (wrought iron fences and screens) and quiebrasoles (concrete breeze blocks), the decorative elements ever-present in MidFOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2023

Twentieth Century Puerto Rican vernacular architecture. “We are very excited to premier this body of work in the Chicago area. Edra Soto's work continues to garner more attention internationally as she combines beautiful immersive installations with important content rooted in her desire to find meaning in the architecture, history and experiences of our lives," says Cleve Carney Museum of Art Curator Justin Witte. “GRAFT” also makes visible the role that African diasporic traditions have played and continue to play in Puerto Rican architecture. Most importantly, however, “GRAFT” is Soto’s personal exploration of home and serves as a container for her own relationship to home in Puerto Rico and the United States, where she currently resides. “The Myth of Closure | El Mito del Cierre” transforms the literal and conceptual framework of “GRAFT” using textural elements, colors, and designs that pay homage to the facades of homes in the neighborhood where her mother is being cared for and now lives – a neighborhood that is past its prime and largely forgotten. Encased within the architectural structures that Soto has built are large heartshaped openings symbolizing the care with which one frames a memory or a person’s likeness. THE MAC Acclaimed Actor/ Singer-Songwriter Tyler Hilton To Celebrate Elvis Presley’s Recordings From Sun Studios At The Mac January 15 The popular American hot Jazz and Western Swing trio Hot Club of Cowtown returns to the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15. They will be joined by Tyler Hilton, who played the role of Elvis in the 2005 Golden Globe-winning biopic “Walk the Line,” for a must-see concert featuring hits Presley recorded at the legendary Sun Studios. Hot Club of Cowtown will open the evening with its own set of Western swing, original songs, and European hot jazz. Memphis’s Sun Studios earned the nickname of “The Birthplace of Rock'n'roll,” in part because it was the home of at least 24 of Elvis’s earliest recordings made between 1955 and 1957. Now, more than 70 years after the initial debut of those recordings, Hot Club of Cowtown and Tyler Hilton unite to bring some of these timeless tunes including “That’s All Right, Mama,” “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and “I Got a Woman” to life on stage. Tyler Hilton is an American-born actor and singersongwriter now residing in Canada. In addition

FOX VALLEY MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2023

to writing and performing his own songs for audiences across the country, Hilton is known by many for his appearances as Chris Keller on The WB/The CW’s “One Tree Hill” where he performed covers of John Waite’s hit, “Missing You” and a remake of Ryan Adams's song "When The Stars Go Blue" with his "One Tree Hill" costar Bethany Joy Lenz. Hilton has also appeared on each of the three different “One Tree Hill” soundtrack albums, some with formerly unreleased material that cannot be found anywhere else. Hilton was lauded for his performance as the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley in the 2005 critically acclaimed blockbuster “Walk the Line.” Now, Hilton steps back into his Elvis shoes to delight audiences with a collection of songs that define Presley’s early career. Hot Club of Cowtown has garnered an international following since their start in the late 1990s because of their unique sound, unforgettable live shows, and impeccable musical skill. Innovatively marrying

hot jazz and western swing, the trio has crafted a distinctive sound that makes for a truly one-of-a-kind musical experience. The ensemble marks 25 years of making music this year. Hot Club of Cowtown features Elana James (fiddle and vocals), Whit Smith (guitar and vocals) and Zack Sapunor (bass and vocals). The band has delighted audiences worldwide, opening for musicians such as Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. “This Austin-based western swing/jazz trio–violin, guitar and upright bass– will bring even the tamest audience to its feet,” the Chicago Tribune writes. And The Toronto Globe & Mail says, “This young band distinguishes itself by its technical musicianship and vast acreage of diverse styles alone, but it seals the deal on stage, subtly and methodically casting aside the audience’s daily worries and levitating the room into a dreamy salon of carefree abandon.” Tickets Hot Club of Cowtown & Tyler Hilton: “Celebrating Elvis Presley’s Records from Sun Studios” comes to the McAninch Arts Center, 425 Fawell Blvd. In Glen Ellyn, Ill. 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15. Ticket prices range from $35 to $50. For tickets or additional information call 630.942.4000 or visit AtTheMAC.org. Box Office hours are Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 6 p.m. and three hours prior to performances.

New Philharmonic Celebrates Hollywood’s Golden Age With Korngold’s “Hollywood Concerto” Jan. 21 & 22 At The Mac Award-winning youth violinist Esme AriasKim showcased in work by master film composer of Hollywood’s golden age who transformed some of his movie themes into one of the best-loved concertos of the 20th century. Program includes selections from popular film scores by Korngold, Goodwin, Rota, Steiner and Waxman as well as Enesco’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 and Sibelius “Finlandia.” Before there was John Williams, there was Erich Korngold. During Hollywood’s Golden Age, Errol Flynn, Bette Davis and Oliva de Haviland lit up the silver screen, but lush orchestrations were tantamount – and no film score composer was more acclaimed than Erich Korngold. New Philharmonic, the professional orchestra in residence at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC), opens 2023 with a program featuring Erich Korngold’s “Hollywood Concerto” and showcasing award-winning prodigious young violinist Esme Arias-Kim 7:30 p.m. Saturday, FoxValleyMagazine.com

Jan. 21 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22. Selections from popular film scores by Erich Korngold, Ron Goodwin, Nino Rota, Max Steiner and Franz Waxman, as well as George Enesco’s “Romanian Rhapsody No. 1” and Jean Sibelius “Finlandia,” complete the program. Austrian-born American composer and conductor Korngold (1897-1957) was a child prodigy considered by many to be one of the most important and influential composers in Hollywood history. He was a noted pianist and composer of classical music, along with music for Hollywood films, and the first composer of international stature to write Hollywood scores. Korngold created his “Hollywood Concerto” by incorporating musical elements from some of his movie themes including the 1937 film “Another Dawn” starring Errol Flynn and Kay Francis, the 1939 film “Juarez” starring Bette Davis and Claude Rains, his Oscarwinning score to “Anthony Adverse” (1936) starring Fredric March and Olivia de Havilland and the main theme from “The Prince and the Pauper” (1937) starring Errol Flynn and Claude Rains.

Joining New Philharmonic for the “Hollywood Concerto” will be guest violinist Esme Arias-Kim. Arias-Kim is currently a Merit Scholarship Fellow at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy, a training center for outstanding pre-college students. She is also a fellow of the Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative. She is a first-place winner in many prestigious competitions. During the summer of 2018, she was the only American among the 16 finalists selected to compete in Il Piccolo Violino Magico International Competition in Italy. In 2020, she received Grand Prize in the Junior division of the Sphinx Competition and was awarded the Overall Open Division Grand Winner and Open Senior Division Overall Winner in the 2020 Walgreens National Concerto Competition. She has even performed a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. Arias-Kim has also appeared on WFMT’s “Introductions” and NPR’s “From the Top.” The concert program will also feature selections from Korngold’s scores for the Errol Flynn swashbuckling films “Sea Hawk” and “Captain Blood” as well as Ron Goodwin’s “633 Squadron” (1964), Nino Rota’s “The Godfather” (1972), Max

Steiner’s “Dodge City” (1939) and Franz Waxman’s “Prince Valiant Suite” (1954); as well as what may be Romanian composer’s George Enesco’s best-known work, the ebullient and kinetic “Romanian Rhapsody No. 1.” At the top of the program, the Glenbard South H.S. orchestra under the direction of Stephen Govertson, will join New Philharmonic for a sideby-side performance of Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia.” This tone poem by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius was written in 1899 for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire and was the last of seven pieces performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history. Contemporary action film fans may recognize this work as being featured in the soundtrack of “Die Hard 2: Die Harder.” Tickets New Philharmonic performs Korngold’s “Hollywood Concerto” and other works at the McAninch Arts Center, 425 Fawell Blvd. on the campus of College of DuPage, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22. Tickets are $53. $10 tickets are available for students (based on availability). For more information visit AtTheMAC.org or call the MAC box office at 630.942.4000, Tuesday – Saturday, 12 noon – 6 p.m. and three hours prior to performance.
