THE CHRIST-EFFECT AND THE POPE’S HOPES Before the Holy Father set out on his Apostolic Journey to Cuba and the United States, there was a lot of talk about the “Francis Effect”! That talk became more and more the talk of Havana, Washington, New York, and Philadelphia. It truly became the “talk of the town”. Anyone even remotely familiar with what has happened in the Church and the world during the relatively brief amount of time that Francis has walked in the shoes of the fisherman, would readily agree that he has had quite an effect. Yet if asked what he would call that effect, he himself would never call it the “Francis Effect”. And while he might possibly call it the Papal Effect, especially if he considered what happened in Cuba after Pope Saint John Paul II visited there in 1998 (Fidel Castro declared Christmas a “national holiday”), and what happened in Cuba after Pope Benedict XVI visited there in 2012 (Raul Castro declared Good Friday a “national holiday”), I don’t think that he would call it that either. Pope Francis would – at least in the opinion of your Pastor – more likely than not call the effect that has touched the world since his arrival: the Christ-effect! That effect while refreshing and restorative, has also been challenging! And the Pope wouldn’t have it any other way. But don’t take it from your Pastor. Take it from Pope Francis himself who had this to say on the occasion of XXVIII World Youth Day in Brazil (28 July 2013): Jesus did not say: “go, if you would like to, if you have the time”, but he said: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Sharing the experience of faith, bearing witness to the Faith, proclaiming the Gospel: this is a command that the Lord entrusts to the whole Church, and that includes you; but it is a command that is born not from a desire for domination, from the desire for power, but from the force of love, from the fact that Jesus first came into our midst and did not give us just a part of Himself, but He gave us the whole of Himself, He gave His life in order to save us and to show us the love and mercy of God. Jesus does not treat us as slaves, but as people who are free, as friends, as brothers and sisters; and He not only sends us, He accompanies us, He is always beside us in our mission of love. Where does Jesus send us? There are no borders, no limits: He sends us to everyone. The Gospel is for everyone, not just for some. It is not only for those who seem closer to us, more receptive, more welcoming. It is for everyone. Do not be afraid to go and to bring Christ into every area of life, to the fringes of society, even to those who seem farthest away, most indifferent. The Lord seeks all; He wants everyone to feel the warmth of His mercy and His love.” That is why Pope Francis was sent! That is why we have been sent! In order to help us carry out our mission, the Pope has announced an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy/a Year of Favour from the Lord (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016). It is the Pope’s hopes, in his own words that “the celebration of the Holy Year will be for all believers a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God; a living experience of the closeness of the Father; a genuine experience of God’s mercy.” A true Christ-effect in the lives of everyone who might otherwise be saddened to hear Pope Francis say: “Hasta Luego”.

The Family - 16. Engagement Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good Morning! Continuing these catecheses on the family, today I would like to speak about engagement. Engagement — one hears it in the word — has to do with trust, confidence, reliability. Confidence in the vocation that God gives, since marriage is first and foremost the discovery of a call from God. Certainly it is a beautiful thing that young people today can choose to marry on the basis of mutual love. But the very freedom of the bond requires a conscious harmony in the decision, not just a simple understanding of the attraction or feeling, for a moment, for a short time ... it calls for a journey. Engagement, in other words, is the time when the two are called to perform a real labour of love, an involved and shared work that delves deep. Here they discover one another little by little, i.e. the man “learns” about woman by learning about this woman, his fiancée; and the woman “learns” about man by learning about this man, her fiancé. Let us not underestimate the importance of this learning: it is a beautiful endeavour, and love itself requires it, for it is not simply a matter of carefree happiness or enchanted emotion. The biblical account speaks of all creation as a beautiful work of God’s love. The Book of Genesis says that: “God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Gen 1:31). Only when it is finished does God “rest”. We understand from this image that God’s love, which brought forth the world, was not an impromptu decision. No! It was a beautiful work. The love of God created the concrete conditions for an irrevocable covenant, one that is strong and lasting. The covenant of love between man and woman — a covenant for life — cannot be improvised. It isn’t made up one day to the next. There is no marriage express: one needs to work on love, one needs to walk. The covenant of love between man and woman is something learned and refined. I venture to say it is a covenant carefully crafted. To make two lives one is almost a miracle of freedom and the heart entrusted to faith. Perhaps we should emphasize this point more, because our “emotional coordinates” have gone a bit askew. Those who claim to want everything right away, then back out of everything — right away — at the first difficulty (or at the first opportunity). There is no hope for the trust and fidelity entailed in the gift of self, if prevailing tendency is to consume love like some kind of “supplement” for mental and physical wellbeing. This is not love! Engagement focuses on the will to care for something together that must never be bought or sold, betrayed or abandoned, however tempting the offer may be. God, too, when He speaks of the covenant with His people, does so several times in terms of betrothal. In the Book of Jeremiah, in speaking to the people who had distanced themselves from Him, He reminds the people of when they were the “betrothed” of God, and He says: “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride” (cf. 2:2). God took this path of betrothal. He then also made a promise: we heard it at the beginning of the audience, in the Book of Hosea: “I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord” (2:19-20).

The road the Lord takes with His people on this betrothal journey is a long one. At the end, God espouses His people in Jesus Christ. In Jesus He marries the Church. The People of God is Jesus’ Bride. But what a long road! And you Italians, in your literature you have a masterpiece on betrothal, The Betrothed. Young people need to know about it and read it. It is a masterpiece that tells the story of an engaged couple who have endured great suffering, they travel a road filled with many struggles, until at last they arrive at marriage. Don’t leave aside this masterpiece on betrothal, which Italian literature has given especially to you. Go on, read it and you will see the beauty, the suffering, but also the faithfulness of the betrothed. The Church, in her wisdom, guards the distinction between being engaged and being spouses — it’s not the same — especially in view of the delicateness and depth of this test. Let us be careful not to disregard lightheartedly the wisdom of this teaching, which also comes from the experience of happy married life. The powerful symbols of the body hold the keys to the soul: We cannot treat the bonds of the flesh lightly, without opening some lasting wound in the spirit (cf. 1 Cor 6:15-20). Of course, today’s culture and society have become rather indifferent to the delicateness and seriousness of this step. On the other hand, it cannot be said that they are generous to young people who are determined to make a home and welcome children. Indeed, often they put up a thousand obstacles, both psychological and practical. Engagement is a path of life that has to ripen like fruit; it is a way of maturing in love, until the moment it becomes marriage. Pre-marriage courses are a special expression of preparation. And we see so many couples, who perhaps come to the course somewhat reluctantly: “But these priests make us take a course! But why? We already know...” and they go reluctantly. But afterwards they are happy and grateful, because they have found there the opportunity — sometimes the only one — to reflect on their experience in non-trivial terms. Yes, many couples are together a long time, perhaps also in intimacy, sometimes living together, but they don’t really know each other. It seems curious, but experience shows that it’s true. Therefore engagement needs to be re-evaluated as a time of getting to know one another and sharing a plan. The path of preparation for marriage should be implemented from this perspective, also with the benefit of the simple but intense witness of Christian spouses. And also by focusing on the essentials: the Bible, by consciously rediscovering it together; prayer, in its liturgical dimension, but also in “domestic prayer” to live out in the home, the Sacraments, the Sacramental life, Confession, ... where the Lord comes to abide in the engaged couple and prepare them truly to receive one another “with the grace of Christ”; and fraternity with the poor and those in need, who lead us to live soberly and to share. Engaged couples who commit themselves to this path both grow, and all of this leads to preparing for a beautiful celebration of Marriage in a different way, not in a worldly way, but in a Christian way! Let us consider these words of God we have heard, when He speaks to His people as bridegroom to His future bride: “I will betroth you to Me forever; I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord” (Hos 2:19-20). May every engaged couple think of this and say to one another: “I will take you as my bride, I will take you as my bridegroom”. Wait for that moment. It is a moment, it is a path that goes slowly ahead, but it is a path of maturation. The steps of the journey should not be rushed. This is how we mature, step by step. The time of betrothal can truly become a time of initiation, into what? Into surprise. Into the surprise of the spiritual gifts with which the Lord, through the Church, enriches the horizon of the new family that stands ready to live in His blessing. I invite you now to pray to the Holy Family of Nazareth: Jesus, Joseph and Mary. Pray that the family may make this journey of preparation; and pray for couples who are betrothed. Let us pray to Our Lady all together, a Hail Mary for all engaged couples, that they may understand the beauty of this journey towards Marriage. [Hail Mary…] And to engaged couples who are here in the square: “Enjoy the journey of engagement!”

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660 All 18 of our fifth graders enjoyed this past week in Vermont. The annual trip up north to participate in the Farms for City Kids Program (www.FarmsForCityKids.com) is now a decade old tradition at The De La Salle School. Mr. Rall and Mr. Donodeo from our staff accompanied our students and witnessed the team building, the hard work, and the respect for nature that occurred with our young men. The educational staff at Spring Brook Farm involved the students in practical applications of reading, writing, science and math by providing many opportunities in hands-on learning. At this season of the year our students saw the magnificent fall foliage of the Green Mountains, harvested apples from the apple orchard, and took care of the cows, goats, pigs, and chickens that live at the farm. The beauty of God’s creation was apparent everywhere! A bonus side effect of this trip was that the students lived for a week without television shows, cell phones, video games, and Internet access. It can be done!!

And hopefully by Thansgiving Day, we will all see it with help from D’Brickashaw Ferguson, who was educated right here in Freeport: in his church, his family, and in school! “Brickashaw” was educated to build up a community by showing God’s love in action, and with help from a $10,000.00 D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation grant, our community will not only be built up, but we will literally be“lifted up” when a new outdoor LIFT is installed outside of our absolutely beautiful church. It will be a visible sign of God’s love in action!

Scripture Reflection “Whoever is not against us is for us.” The disciples had just told Jesus they had tried to stop a man from driving out demons in Jesus’ Name “because he does not follow us.” Jesus tells them not to do so and then utters the above words (See Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 and also Numbers 11:25-29). It is very human to want people to fit our mold; to want them to be in our group. It is sort of a non-spoken requirement if we are going to like them. Some of the groups feel superior and look down on other groups that do not walk with them. In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us to stop all of that: “Whoever is not against us is for us.” This words of Jesus open wide our hearts to all of our brothers and sisters. As Pope Francis recently declared in his recent speech at the White House: “Jesus said: Go out and tell the Good News to everyone. Go out and in My Name and embrace life as it is, and not as you think it should be.”

SCHOOL OF LOVE AND GRATITUDE Relationship to Lived Experience REFLECTION Watching her husband reading to their young children one evening, her heart swelled in gratitude for the tender and loving man that God had made for her. Catching her look of love, he paused and looked deeply into her eyes, returning her smile. He savored the moment of peace and the warmth of his family surrounding him, thinking that he certainly had so much to be grateful for. Later, after the children were tucked in bed, she embraced him and told him how grateful she was to have him. He told her, “God has given us so much, I’ve been feeling lately like we certainly have a lot to offer another child . . .”

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. How do spouses show gratitude toward each other? Are some ways more effective than others? 2. How can spouses help each other to share the gift of themselves with others, both inside and outside of their family? 3. What good thing did your spouse do recently that you could have thanked him or her for, but didn’t? Write it down on the index card. Share the card privately with your spouse. (The facilitator can also invite anyone who wishes to share.) 4. Make a list: What do you still love about your spouse? Exchange cards.

VINIENDO A CASA EN SEPTIEMBRE, OCTUBRE, Y MÁS ALLÁ El domingo 13 de septiembre de 2015 a las 11:30 A.M. ofrecimos una Misa de acción de gracias por los comercios que apoyan a Nuestro Santo Redentor anunciándose en el boletín (por favor vaya a la última página y llame a esos anunciadores para darles las gracias) y/o contribuyendo al único esfuerzo parroquial por recaudar fondos: La Rifa/Rifa/Rifa. ¡El resto del día como puede ver en este boletín con la ayuda de Dianne, y en Facebook con la ayuda de Gary) perteneció a los feligreses; muchos de los cuales nos acompañaron a mí, al Padre José y al Padre Alessandro en la Calle Pine y en el césped preparado (gracias a Joann, Bruce, Bill y Sheila) para comer los perros calientes y hamburguesas (gracias Caballeros de Colón), música y canto (gracias Haig y Martin, miembros del Coro, Gloria y María) tortas y magdalenas (gracias Panadería Glendale) y una abundancia de entretenimiento basado en la fe en celebración de nuestro VI Día de Aprecio por el Feligrés! El Día de Aprecio por el Feligrés en Nuestro Santo Redentor que celebramos el Domingo después del Día del Obrero, le decimos adiós al verano y comenzamos el año escolar. Es por eso que Las Obras de Misericordia del Primer Domingo en Septiembre (su oportunidad mensual de proveer para otros) son "surtidos escolares". ¡Y aunque muchas tiendas ya no ofrecen descuentos por esos surtidos, le alegrará saber que la Tienda Advent de Rockville Centre continúa ofreciendo 10% de descuento a los feligreses de Nuestro Santo Redentor por el resto de Septiembre! El Mensaje del Pastor del domingo que viene les ofrecerá un plan de implementación que estará "enlazado" (en armonía con los deseos del Santo Padre) "primero y ante todo, con el Sacramento de la Reconciliación y la celebración de la Santa Eucaristía con una reflexión sobre la misericordia." La Familia - 15. Educación Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡buenos días! Hoy, queridos hermanos y hermanas, quiero daros la bienvenida porque he visto entre vosotros a numerosas familias, ¡buenos días a todas las familias! Seguimos reflexionando sobre la familia. Hoy nos detenemos a reflexionar sobre una característica esencial de la familia, o sea su natural vocación a educar a los hijos para que crezcan en la responsabilidad de sí mismos y de los demás. Lo que hemos escuchado del apóstol Pablo, al inicio, es muy bonito: «Hijos, obedeced a vuestros padres en todo, que eso agrada al Señor. Padres, no exasperéis a vuestros hijos, no sea que pierdan el ánimo» (Col 3, 20-21). Esta es una regla sabia: el hijo educado en la escucha y obediencia a los padres, quienes no tienen que mandar de mala manera, para no desanimar a los hijos. Los hijos, en efecto, deben crecer sin desalentarse, paso a paso. Si vosotros padres decís a los hijos: «Subamos por aquella escalera» y los tomáis de la mano y paso a paso los hacéis subir, las cosas irán bien. Pero si vosotros decís: «¡Vamos, sube!» — «Pero no puedo» — «¡Sigue!», esto se llama exasperar a los hijos, pedir a los hijos lo que no son capaces de hacer. Por ello, la relación entre padres e hijos debe ser de una sabiduría y un equilibrio muy grande. Hijos, obedeced a los padres, esto quiere Dios. Y vosotros padres, no exasperéis a los hijos, pidiéndoles cosas que no pueden hacer. Y esto hay que hacerlo para que los hijos crezcan en la responsabilidad de sí mismo y de los demás. Parecería una constatación obvia, sin embargo, incluso en nuestro tiempo, no faltan dificultades. Es difícil para los padres educar a los hijos que sólo ven por la noche, cuando regresan a casa cansados del trabajo. ¡Los que tienen la suerte de tener trabajo! Es aún más difícil para los padres separados, que cargan el peso de su condición: pobres, tuvieron dificultades, se separaron y muchas veces toman al hijo como rehén, y el papá le habla mal de la mamá y la mamá le habla mal del papá, y se hace mucho mal. A los padres separados les digo: jamás, jamás, jamás tomar el hijo como rehén. Os habéis separado por muchas dificultades y motivos, la vida os ha dado esta prueba, pero que no sean los hijos quienes carguen el peso de esta separación, que no sean usados como rehenes contra el otro cónyuge, que crezcan escuchando que la mamá habla bien del papá, aunque no estén juntos, y que el papá habla bien de la mamá. Para los padres separados esto es muy importante y muy difícil, pero pueden hacerlo. Pero, sobre todo, la pregunta: ¿cómo educar? ¿Qué tradición tenemos hoy para transmitir a nuestros hijos? Intelectuales «críticos» de todo tipo han acallado a los padres de mil formas, para defender a las jóvenes generaciones de los daños —verdaderos o presuntos— de la educación familiar. La familia ha sido acusada, entre otras cosas, de autoritarismo, favoritismo, conformismo y represión afectiva que genera conflictos. De hecho, se ha abierto una brecha entre familia y sociedad, entre familia y escuela, el pacto educativo hoy se ha roto; y así, la alianza educativa de la sociedad con la familia ha entrado en crisis porque se ha visto socavada la confianza mutua. Los síntomas son muchos. Por ejemplo, en la escuela se han fracturado las relaciones entre los padres y los profesores. A veces hay tensiones y desconfianza mutua; y las consecuencias naturalmente recaen en los hijos. Por otra parte, se han multiplicado los así llamados «expertos», que han ocupado el papel de los padres, incluso en los aspectos más íntimos de la educación. En

relación a la vida afectiva, la personalidad y el desarrollo, los derechos y los deberes, los «expertos» lo saben todo: objetivos, motivaciones, técnicas. Y los padres sólo deben escuchar, aprender y adaptarse. Privados de su papel, a menudo llegan a ser excesivamente aprensivos y posesivos con sus hijos, hasta no corregirlos nunca: «Tú no puedes corregir al hijo». Tienden a confiarlos cada vez más a los «expertos», incluso en los aspectos más delicados y personales de su vida, ubicándose ellos mismos en un rincón; y así los padres hoy corren el riesgo de autoexcluirse de la vida de sus hijos. Y esto es gravísimo. Hoy existen casos de este tipo. No digo que suceda siempre, pero se da. La maestra en la escuela reprende al niño y escribe una nota a los padres. Recuerdo una anécdota personal. Una vez, cuando estaba en cuarto grado dije una mala palabra a la maestra y la maestra, una buena mujer, mandó llamar a mi mamá. Ella fue al día siguiente, hablaron entre ellas y luego me llamaron. Y mi mamá delante de la maestra me explicó que lo que yo había hecho era algo malo, que no se debe hacer; pero mi madre lo hizo con mucha dulzura y me dijo que pidiese perdón a la maestra delante de ella. Lo hice y me quedé contento porque dije: acabó bien la historia. Pero ese era el primer capítulo. Cuando regresé a casa, comenzó el segundo capítulo... Imaginad vosotros, hoy, si la maestra hace algo por el estilo, al día siguiente se encuentra con los dos padres o uno de los dos para reprenderla, porque los «expertos» dicen que a los niños no se les debe regañar así. Han cambiado las cosas. Por lo tanto, los padres no tienen que autoexcluirse de la educación de los hijos. Es evidente que este planteamiento no es bueno: no es armónico, no es dialógico, y en lugar de favorecer la colaboración entre la familia y las demás entidades educativas, las escuelas, los gimnasios... las enfrenta. ¿Cómo hemos llegado a esto? No cabe duda de que los padres, o más bien, ciertos modelos educativos del pasado tenían algunas limitaciones, no hay duda. Pero también es verdad que hay errores que sólo los padres están autorizados a cometer, porque pueden compensarlos de un modo que es imposible a cualquier otra persona. Por otra parte, como bien sabemos, la vida se ha vuelto tacaña con el tiempo para hablar, reflexionar, discutir. Muchos padres se ven «secuestrados» por el trabajo —papá y mamá deben trabajar— y otras preocupaciones, molestos por las nuevas exigencias de los hijos y por la complejidad de la vida actual —es así y debemos aceptarla como es—, y se encuentran como paralizados por el temor a equivocarse. El problema, sin embargo, no está sólo en hablar. Es más, un «dialoguismo» superficial no conduce a un verdadero encuentro de la mente y el corazón. Más bien preguntémonos: ¿Intentamos comprender «dónde» están los hijos realmente en su camino? ¿Dónde está realmente su alma, lo sabemos? Y, sobre todo, ¿queremos saberlo? ¿Estamos convencidos de que ellos, en realidad, no esperan otra cosa? Las comunidades cristianas están llamadas a ofrecer su apoyo a la misión educativa de las familias, y lo hacen ante todo con la luz de la Palabra de Dios. El apóstol Pablo recuerda la reciprocidad de los deberes entre padres e hijos: «Hijos, obedeced a vuestros padres en todo, que eso agrada al Señor. Padres, no exasperéis a vuestros hijos, no sea que pierdan el ánimo» (Col 3, 20-21). En la base de todo está el amor, el amor que Dios nos da, que «no es indecoroso ni egoísta; no se irrita; no lleva cuentas del mal... Todo lo excusa, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta» (1 Cor 13, 5-7). Incluso en las mejores familias hay que soportarse, y se necesita mucha paciencia para soportarse. Pero la vida es así. La vida no se construye en un laboratorio, se hace en la realidad. Jesús mismo pasó por la educación familiar. También en este caso, la gracia del amor de Cristo conduce a su realización lo que está escrito en la naturaleza humana. ¡Cuántos ejemplos estupendos tenemos de padres cristianos llenos de sabiduría humana! Ellos muestran que la buena educación familiar es la columna vertebral del humanismo. Su irradiación social es el recurso que permite compensar las lagunas, las heridas, los vacíos de paternidad y maternidad que tocan a los hijos menos afortunados. Esta irradiación puede obrar auténticos milagros. Y en la Iglesia suceden cada día estos milagros. Deseo que el Señor done a las familias cristianas la fe, la libertad y la valentía necesarias para su misión. Si la educación familiar vuelve a encontrar el orgullo de su protagonismo, muchas cosas cambiarán para mejor, para los padres inciertos y para los hijos decepcionados. Es hora de que los padres y las madres vuelvan de su exilio —porque se han autoexiliado de la educación de los hijos— y vuelvan a asumir plenamente su función educativa. Esperamos que el Señor done a los padres esta gracia: de no autoexiliarse de la educación de los hijos. Y esto sólo puede hacerlo el amor, la ternura y la paciencia.

Reflexión Semanal “Todo aquel que no está contra nosotros, está a nuestro favor.” (Vea San Marcos 9:38-48 y también Números 11:25-29) Es cosa humana el desear que la gente se ajuste a nuestro modo de pensar, que formen parte de nuestro grupo. Es casi un requisito sobre entendido si es que nos van a agradar. Algunos grupos se sienten superiores a otros y ni siquiera se hablan entre sí. En el Evangelio de hoy Jesús nos pide que cesemos de hacer eso: “Todo aquel que no está en contra de nosotros” Esas palabras de Jesús abren nuestro corazón para todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Como el Papa Francisco declaró en su reciente discurso en la Casa Blanca: “Jesús dijo: Vayan y declaren las buenas nuevas a todos. Vayan en mi nombre y abracen la vida como es, y no como ustedes creen que debería ser.

Even though the poor are often rough and unrefined, we must not judge them from external appearances nor from the mental gifts they seem to have received. On the contrary, if you consider the poor in the light of faith, then you will observe that they are taking the place of the Son of God Who chose to be poor. Although in His passion He almost lost the appearance of a man and was considered a fool by the Gentiles and a stumbling block by the Jews, He showed them that His mission was to preach to the poor: He sent Me to preach the good news to the poor. We also ought to have this same spirit and imitate Christ’s actions, that is, we must take care of the poor, console them, help them, support their cause. Since Christ willed to be born poor, He chose for Himself disciples who were poor. He made Himself the servant of the poor and shared their poverty. He went so far as to say that He would consider every deed which either helps or harms the poor as done for or against Himself. Since God surely loves the poor, He also loves those who love the poor. For when one person holds another dear, he also includes in his affection anyone who loves or serves the one he loves. That is why we hope that God will love us for the sake of the poor. So when we visit the poor and needy, we try to be understanding where they are concerned. We sympathize with them so fully that we can echo Paul’s words: I have become all things to all men. Therefore, we must try to be stirred by our neighbours’ worries and distress. We must beg God to pour into our hearts sentiments of pity and compassion and to fill them again and again with these dispositions. It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other help during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of mind. Offer the deed to God as your prayer. Do not become upset or feel guilty because you interrupted your prayer to serve the poor. God is not neglected if you leave Him for such service. One of God’s works is merely interrupted so that another can be carried out. So when you leave prayer to serve some poor person, remember that this very service is performed for God. Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity. Since she is a noble mistress, we must do whatever she commands. With renewed devotion, then, we must serve the poor, especially outcasts and beggars. They have been given to us as our masters and patrons.
