Dordea honored for 14 years as police chief By Joy Burnett

October 7 will be Chief Larry Dordea Day in Hartville. At the Sept. 26 meeting of Hartville Village Council, Mayor Cynthia Billings read a proclamation honoring Chief Dordea for his 44-year career in law enforcement, including 14 years with Hartville and 13 years as police chief. She said she would like for Lt. Kevin Moore to serve as interim chief until council chooses a replacement for Chief Dordea. In other police business, council engaged in extensive discussion with two members of the audience who asked questions about a request for a proposal from Lake Township about the cost of providing police service for the village by the Uniontown Police Department. Councilman Steven Reisch said they are gathering information, and that they have also asked for a proposal from the Stark

County sheriff. The township’s proposal for the same service that the village has now is $600,000 per year. The current police budget for the village is more than $1 million per year. Council President Beverly Green invited other council members on a field trip to the sheriff’s office on Sept. 29 to observe their operations. Mayor Billings introduced Pastor Ron Embleton of the Cornerstone Community Chapel in Lake Township, who addressed council about his work in leadership training. He invited them to an event on Oct. 14. In the absence of the Village Engineer, Brian Meluch of CT Consultants reported that two applications for grants for street paving have been submitted to the Ohio Public Works Commission. Council heard the third reading of the ordinance to increase the sewer connection fee to $3,000 as recommended by the Sewer Rates

Lake trustees discuss providing police coverage By Joy Burnett

At their meeting on Sept. 26, Lake Township Trustees engaged in discussion with former Hartville Councilman Jeffrey Miller, who said he is now a resident of Uniontown, to answer his questions about a request from a member of Village Council about the cost for the Uniontown Police Department to provide service for the village. Fiscal Officer Matthew Erb said he had asked Uniontown Police Chief Michael Batchik about what he would need to provide service. The police chief said they would need three additional officers, The township added two more officers to cover vacations and time off, as well as vehicles and equipment. The proposal was for $600,000 per year. Board President Jeremy Yoder said he had spoken

with Hartville Mayor Cynthia Billings about the proposal. He said there would be many details to work out. In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Uniontown Police Officer Elizabeth Salewsky, effective that day, and approved a general separation agreement. They thanked Officer Salewsky for her 12 years of service. Board Vice President Steven Miller said the proposal for the new restrooms at the Lake Township Community Park should be ready for the board’s review and approval at the next meeting. St. Jacob’s Lutheran’s 175 years topic of fireside chat By Dawn Bair Princehorn

R

ecently celebrating its 175th a n n i v e r s a r y, S t . J a c o b ’s Lutheran Church was the site of the Lake Township Historical Society’s fireside chat about churches in Lake Township. Tom Dwenger opened the afternoon fireside chat by welcoming the Lake Township Historical Society and the community to St. Jacob’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on behalf of Pastor Angel Jackson and members of St. Jacob’s. Pastor Angel Jackson then led the attendees in prayer. She then introduced Dawn Bair Princehorn, who grew up on Geib Road and graduated from Hartville High School in 1957. St. Jacob’s was chartered on July 10, 1847 and we just celebrated our 175th anniversary on July 10, 2022.  My great-great grandfather, Jacob H. Bair, was a charter member. The names of Brumbaugh, Bishop, Harter, Heiser, Swartz, Weisel and Werstler also run back through the years. Our 1947 centennial booklet reads: “Most of the early settlers of this part of Stark County came from eastern Pennsylvania and settled here about 1806-1830. Many of those settlers were either Lutheran or Reformed church members.” Holy Trinity on Middlebranch Road, also known as Henry’s Church, was formed as a “Union church.” Because people were tired of walking up to six miles to get to Henry’s Church, it was decided to form a church in Lake Township. On July 10, 1847, a constitution was signed, thus establishing St. Jacob’s Church with both Lutheran and Reformed denominations using the same building. This constitution stated, “In our church, only the German language shall be preached.” The first building erected was a small wood framed structure that stood just east of the present church. Today, we sit in St. Jacob’s second church, which was

dedicated in February, 1889. That year, James & Company charged $227.66 for the pews, altar and pulpit. Shortly after the dedication, a difference of opinion arose between the two denominations. Our records seem to hint that the Reformed congregation was not happy with the Lutherans due to some financial reasons. H o w e v e r, M a r t h a G r e e n Machamer related the reason for this disagreement was because the Lutheran congregation wanted to switch the preaching to English while the Reformed church wanted to continue the preaching in German. By December, 1890, both congregations were worshiping God in their newly constructed buildings. The Reformed Church at the corner of Market Avenue and Mt. Pleasant Street in Plain Township and the Lutheran congregation here on State Street. Many have remarked about our beautiful ceiling which was installed by Adam Bishop and his cousin. While looking up at the ceiling you may notice the gas chandelier. When Hubert Brumbaugh was interviewed in 1997, he recalled that the gas-lighted chandelier had been given to the church by Marion Werstler. It was sold to him by Harold Machamer’s dad, Anthony Machamer. By 1895, St. John’s of Uniontown, Henry’s/Holy Trinity, and St. Jacob’s were part of a joint parish called the Uniontown Parish. Rev. Herbert Martens served all three churches. In those early years, the men sat on the pulpit side of the church and the women and children on the other side. The men would give the main contribution and the women would put in their “egg” money. This practice ended in 1914 because we started to use envelopes. The women didn’t like the idea that they couldn’t put their own bit of money in the offering plate. Pretty soon families started sitting together. In May 1922, the Reverend C. L. Warstler preached his first sermon here. He would go on to serve

the joint parish of Holy Trinity and St Jacob’s for the next 20 years. When touring the building, take note of the quilt that is displayed next to the mailboxes. The women of St. Jacob’s made it for Reverend Warstler. Many years later, his daughter Elizabeth Warstler gave it back to us. One important thing you do need to know is St. Jacob’s Lutheran Church does not own the cemetery. I know it is just outside our building but we do not own it. Both denominations, though worshiping in their own buildings, continued to be joint owners until April 11, 1923. On that date, each

church sold their interest in the cemetery to the St. Jacob’s Cemetery Association. We do have a gap in our records because a member had some of the records in his home and there was a fire. Fortunately, the earliest records were stored here at the church so we do have the original constitution, charter members’ signatures, the parish register which dates to 1847 and some Sunday School lesson books Various church groups met in the homes of members and therefore some of those records continued to be in the homes of members. Geraldine Marker Swartz had

the records for the Ladies Aid and Missionary Society in her home. From these records, we know the women of the church earned money in the 1930’s by selling Jell-O, sponges and meat pins. This enabled them to support the greater outreach of the church. In later years, this same group earned money by saving sales tax stamps. Later on, they obtained a roaster for the church by saving Betty Crocker coupons. This is the same group that now makes quilts for Lutheran World Relief. This story will be continued in next week’s edition of The Hartville News.

Former Lake Twp. attorney is suspended The Bar Association’s complaint, filed Sept. 15, includes allegations of inappropriate and unprofessional conduct, and states that D’Atri misappropriated $100,000 from a client’s trust, as well as large amounts from other trusts. This is in addition to the misappropriation of more than $250,000 from a family’s trust funds in a previous complaint. The unprofessional conduct refers to a romantic relationship with an elderly client, of which the Bar Association learned after filing a previous complaint. The woman is the executrix of her late daughter’s $1.2 million estate. According to the complaint, the client is in poor health, has a deteriorating mental capacity and is bed-bound. The complaint states that D’Atri told her to keep their relationship secret and to erase all messages in order to avoid detection. State investigators found cell phone messages

before she could delete them. This relationship violated the code of conduct between an attorney and a client. According to the Bar Association, D’Atri has not cooperated with its investigation. He has not provided requested documents or responded to a subpoena to appear for a deposition. According to Stark County Common Pleas Court records, a beneficiary of the family trusts filed a lawsuit against D’Atri in July. That lawsuit, which is about the transfers of the money in the Bar Association’s complaint, is still open. No criminal charges have been filed against D’Atri, who is 84. He has been an attorney for almost 60 years, and had no previous history of discipline, administrative sanctions or suspensions, according to the Board of Professional Conduct. He is a past chairman of the Stark Community Foundation.

The Ohio Supreme Court on Sept. 27 suspended the law license of local attorney E. Lang D’Atri, a former resident of Lake Township, indefinitely and effective immediately. The action took place after the Stark County Bar Association filed a motion seeking the suspension, alleging that D’Atri “poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the public”. The court order requires D’Atri to cease practicing law immediately and to advise all of  his clients, other attorneys, courts ands administrative bodies involved in pending cases that he is no longer permitted to practice law, and to do so within 30 days  He is required to refund any fees paid for legal services not yet performed and to return any clients’ legal documents. He will not be  allowed to practice law unless he goes through a formal reinstatement process with the court.

Marlboro trustees meet Swisher million. The premium of $19,826 is higher this year. The rates have not changed, but the contribution changes based on exposure. The township will receive a capital distribution of $925 this year since OTARMA is owned by the members. Trustee Battershell asked when the next property appraisal would take place and Zuccaro said they are every three years. He thanked trustees for their support of the program. The majority of this meeting was taken up with discussion of water and drainage issues in the public speaks portion of the meeting. Those issues are occurring in the vicinity of Lynnett and Lynnpark streets. Rick Buzaki and Nancy Fuller spoke regarding drainage problems. The properties were dry until Sept. 12 when they found a drainage pipe draining water into an area holding stagnant water, with a trickle of drainage into a private yard drain in the neighbor’s yard. Neighbors living directly to the north of them on Lynnpark Street have come to the township meetings in the past expressing concern about drainage. Buzaki wondered what had changed in the last 28 years for this project to get started now. Trustee Battershell stated that this has been an ongoing problem for years. The property on the north end gets saturated and water

Three individuals attended the Sept. 19 meeting to speak to the Marlboro Township Board of Trustees and others at the meeting. One was Dan Swisher, superintendent of Marlington Local School District, who introduced himself and stated he would like to try to attend trustee meetings more often. He wants to share communication among the townships and schools. He had already attended Lexington and Washington township meetings. Trustee John Battershell stated that previously Marlington Community Action Committee Meetings were held quarterly and seemed to work well. Swisher noted that the school has a renewal levy coming up on Nov. 8. This is not a new tax. Eric Taggart, director at Rodman Public Library, spoke regarding the Rodman Public Library levy renewal. The 10-year renewal levy is not a new tax or tax increase. It was first passed in 2010 after a reduction in state funding. This operating levy accounts for 35% of the library’s funding. Taggart explained, the library is an organization that can be used by everyone and provides a good value to the community. It would be very devastating if the levy doesn’t pass. People do still use libraries and over the last year they had about 125,000 visitors and checked out over 400,000 materials. Many people use the Inter-

net and Wi-Fi and the bookmobile is still active as well. Fiscal Officer Tracy Ferrett asked if they get credit for books checked out online and he confirmed that they do, but they still need to buy the licenses which are usually more expensive than physical books. Jim Zuccaro, president of Summit Insurance Agency, introduced himself as the Ohio Township Association Risk Management Authority representative for Marlboro Township. All townships, including Marlboro, have a minimum of $3 million of general liability protection. Over 80% (1,080) of the Ohio townships are in the program. The goal of OTARMA is to provide coverage specific to township needs. Cyber coverage is a big issue right now and Aaron Willis, an OTARMA cyber specialist, met with township personnel and worked with Network Administrator Kyle Devies. There is also a resource center online containing procedures, checklists, DVD’s, etc. The township has auto liability, law enforcement and public officials’ liability coverage. The buildings were recently appraised by the CBIZ (Century Business Services, Inc) Valuation Group and were adjusted, and personal property equipment/computers are also insured. The total of all the township’s property coverage is $1.7 million with a blanket property amount of $1.2

from Page 9 leeches down over the properties. The system was designed and approved by the Stark County Engineers back in the 1960’s and there is an easement that was put in at that time where the township was working recently. Battershell noted the township is responsible for getting water off the road. It appears that three ground drains have been added to private properties and it appears the township is now draining on that property. During recent township work there of the installation of drainage pipes, the plan was changed to stop short of the oak trees to avoid damaging them unless it presents a problem. It is presenting a problem if they are getting water and it hasn’t rained. Trustees proposed finishing the job by taking the drainage line to the ditch, which may take out the trees. They emphasized that they are not responsible for

Trustee Ken Eddleman volunteered to call the Stark County Engineers Office and have them look at the area to see what they suggest. The trustees asked everyone to let them try what they’re doing with the money available. During the Road Department report, there are two residents on Lynnett Street who are asking about putting pipe in to cover the ditch. The trustees commented that the township would only be responsible for putting it in or contracting it out. The residents would be responsible for the cost of materials, which may exceed $50 per linear foot. Road Foreman Rick Bergert recommended checking with the Stark County Engineer’s Office for their opinion on closing the ditch due to the

amount of water that comes down that ditch. He added that he didn’t know if the 24-inch pipe in the driveways could handle the water. In another portion of the meeting, Fiscal Officer Tracy Ferrett reported that an auditor from the Auditor of State’s office had begun fieldwork on the 20202021 audit. Police Chief Ronald Devies reported that the Aultman-Alliance Community Campus are purchasing a new defibrillator for the department. It will be used in one of the police cars. Also, the department received donations totaling $450 in memory of John Bauman and $1,800 from the Cutty’s Sunset Cruise-In. Both have been earmarked for the Law Enforcement Trust Fund. Devies stated that Officer Ruggeri passed the property room

management course last week so he will be entitled to the incentive now that he is certified. At the chief ’s meeting last week, he and Kyle Stone, Stark County Prosecuting Attorney, discussed the importance of Stark Council of Government implementing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) testing in the Crime Lab. Currently DNA evidence must be taken to and picked up from Richfield. Trustee Eddleman reported on the proposed new SCOG formula model for paying for the Crime Lab. The township is currently paying $9.79 per resident and the new formula would increase it to $11.06 per resident, plus another $3-$4 increase if DNA goes through the Crime Lab. Trustee Battershell asked Trustee Wayne Schillig to schedule Chris Nichols, who came up with the formula, to come to the next trustee meeting to explain it. Per Eddleman, the next SCOG meeting will be the second week in October. A packet for the vote will go out to everyone on the list. The board votes on it and sends back a letter. This proposed model does not include DNA, which would make the costs go up $3 to $4. He added that he has copies of all of the materials for Fiscal Officer Ferrett. Road Foreman Rick Bergert reported the department had com-

pleted the chip-and-seal program. For the Summer Road Program, it came in at $6,400 under the estimate for paving, $935 under for chip and seal, and $5,000 over for grader patching. For crack sealing, he requested another $4,000 for the program to hire a company to finish Immel Avenue. Ferrett confirmed that there was money left in the road program budget so trustees gave Bergert permission to proceed. Bergert thanked everyone for their thoughts during the passing of his mother, Mary Bergert. Trustee Schillig reported he had received a map from Sarah Buell at the Stark County Park District for proposed wetland mitigation, primarily on the Bingham Farm site. He has also been a liaison between Buell and Chief Matt Anstine regarding improvements to make Walborn Reservoir trails more accessible for safety forces. The trustees approved to pay bills in the amount of $60,874.71. Battershell opened a discussion about the quote received for the door replacement in the police department. Eddleman said American Rescue Plan Act Funds can be used for this purpose and believed this is a good option for the police department. The trustees approved the proposal with Capitol Aluminum & Glass Corporation for door replacement in the police department at a cost of $24,000 for three doors and installation. A regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Marlboro Township Hall.

Marlington boys, Lake girls are division champs By Todd Thoenen

It was an abnormally cool dry day for Saturday’s 2022 Cross Country Stark County Championship meet at GlenOak High School. BOYS Defending State Champions and 2021 Stark County Champion Marlington Dukes defended their title with another overall championship. While they are ‘only D-2’, as some around the cross-country world say, they are motivated to succeed in every meet.

“They have a chip on their shoulder and that motivates them to work even harder,” commented Marlington Head Coach Mellissa Graham. They have earned bragging rights with back-toback Stark County Champions, overall and in Div-II/ III. Marlington, led by junior Colin Cernansky with an overall runner-up finish, set the pace for the Dukes to repeat as champions. Cernansky ran the course with

a time of 15:30.69 just over 24 seconds behind GlenOak senior Tommy Rice, who set a new course record with a time 15:06.19, breaking Lake 2020 State Champion Nathan Moore’s record of 15:13.03. Cernansky finished fifth in the 2021 Meet with a time of 16:06. Marlington has been improving every meet and they are moving toward another opportunity to repeat as State Div-II Champions. Senior Nash Minor has cut 30 seconds off last season’s time with a 15:51.22. “Nash can push himself very hard for a very long time. I think for him it is a mental thing,” Graham continued. Marlington has not lost a team meet this season and pushed each other to succeed. Scoring for Marlington in Saturday’s meet were C e r n a n s k y, r u n n e r - u p and Div-II/III champion (15:30.03); Nash Minor,

seventh overall and third Div-II/III (15:51.22); M i c h a e l N i c h o l s , 11 t h and fourth in Div-II/III (16:12.38); Logan Citino 13th and sixth in Div-II/ III (16:19.22); and Cohen Boyce, 20th and seventh Div-II/III (16:37.27). Lake boys team finished eighth overall and fifth in Div-I. Scoring for Lake were sophomore Lex McMahon, 47th overall and 30th Div-I (17:33.40); junior Preston Rickman 50th and 32nd in Div-I (17:46.08); senior Jonathon Smith 57th, 37th (17:58.37); junior Isaiah Baldridge 58th, 38th (17:82.62); and junior Holden Clemens 63rd, 40th (18:09.48). Scoring for Lake Center were senior Jacob Wyder, 102nd and 44th in Div-II/III (19:27.14 personal record); senior Zane Grabowski, 121st, 60th (20:11); senior L i a m Wi l s o n , 1 2 7 t h , 65th (20:50.19); sophoSee CHAMPS Page 14

October 6, 2022 that made me excited, and I love this course. It’s my favorite. I tried to go out in the front strong, and I knew Bella (Graham) from Marlington was going to be up there with me. So, I was excited because I knew I wasn’t going to be up there alone. I know there are very good athletes here,” said Scheffler. “Mile 3 came around. I decided to pick it up and see how long I could hold off everyone else to the finish. Most of the excite-

ment came when I realized it was achievable (Stark County all-around Champion). When I got here, it was just executing the plan and afterwards, the feeling of knowing that I worked so hard for this it’s not like anything else,” she said. Scheffler’s accomplishment led Lake to a Div-I Championship and runner-up all around behind Minerva. Scoring for Lake were: Daniela Scheffler Div-I champion and runner-up all around

We really realized our potential there. As we’ve gone through the past few meets, we focused not on winning races or placing or times but focused on

the little things. Trying to race more confidently and learn ways to get an advantage over other teams and be thinking during the race. This was the first day we really wanted to make a statement. We had goals to be Div-I champs today. We’re coming along, a very strong core group, just another year older and trying to get a little faster,” commented Lake Head Coach Chris Wise. We have some championship races coming up and we enjoyed running against the good competition today,” commented Coach Ritchie. “Our top runners in the boys’ and girls’ races had personal records today, Jacob Wyder (19:27.14)

and Elsie Haught (21:58.98). Her goal was to stay sub-22. We also had two others get PR’s Nicole Hayes (22:44.19) and Grace Duff (24:23.42),” commented Ritchie. Lake Center is in the process of hopefully building a home crosscountry course east of the school.

“We have some acreage across the street that we want to turn into a course. We’ve been talking with Hartville Hardware and Kitchen. LCCS AD Shane Byler has been working hard to build all his sports teams into top programs,” Ritchie said. “He is a good encourager, whatever we need. We have been using a neighborhood pond. We do a lot of repeats around there. We’re on the grass, soft surfaces, it works well.”
