When it comes to displaying art, proper lighting can make all the difference in the world. If a piece of art is constantly bathed in darkness or exposed to intense light, it might not have the same impact that it did when you first saw it in the gallery. Picture lights should put your art at centre stage, whether for a complex display or a quiet, understated highlight. Your artwork can be admired safely and optimally for years with proper lighting techniques.

There are a few general guidelines for determining the proper light size. Choose a picture light half the width of the picture for portraits. Choose picture lights that are one-third to one-half the width for landscape shots. You will find tips to illuminate your art with picture lights here 1- Select the appropriate picture light size

When positioning a picture light over an artwork, the goal is to achieve an even spread of light across the entire image. While avoiding a “hot spot” on the top half as much as possible. To minimize glare, position the picture light centrally above the picture at an angle of 30 to 35 degrees. 2. Place the picture light properly over the artwork

The number one mistake people make when hanging artwork in their homes is placing them too high. The centre of a picture should be at eye level or even lower in a sitting room where you spend most of your time sitting on sofas. 3. Display artwork at the proper height

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures the accuracy of a light source for rendering colours. CRI isn’t all that important for most bulbs around the house; brightness and warmth are more important. However, when it comes to illuminating artworks, it can make all the difference. You should look for a CRI of 80 or higher for picture lights. 4. Make use of a picture light with a high Color Rendering Index
