Industrial Production Index (IPI). Base 2005 May 2010. Provisional Data

Main Results

-The Industrial Production Index experiences an interannual variation of 5.1% in May, more than two points higher than the one registered in April. - By economic destination of the goods, all of the sectors present positive interannual rates, except Durable consumer goods. − The average rate of the IPI stands at 1.6% in the first five months of the year.

− Industrial Production registers positive interannual rates in 12 Autonomous Communities in the month of May.

Annual evolution of Industrial Production The Industrial Production Index (IPI) experienced an interannual variation of 5.1% in May, more than two points higher than the one registered in April. By economic destination of the goods, the industrial sectors that most influenced this interannual increase in industrial production in the month of May were: • Intermediate goods, with an annual variation of 9.8% and an effect on the general index of 3.406, due to the generalised increases in the majority of activities composed by this sector. Worth noting were the increases registered in Manufacture of other chemical products, and in Manufacture of basic products in iron, steel and ferro-alloys. • Non-durable consumer goods, with an annual rate of 4.6%, and an effect of 1.241 on the general index, caused by the increases observed in the majority of activities in this sector. Among these, worth noting was the Manufacture of pharmaceutical specialities and Manufacture of soap, detergent and other cleaning materials.

Only one of the large industrial sectors presents a negative effect: • Durable consumer goods, with an annual variation of -2.2% and an effect on the general index of -0.081. This rate was explained by the interannual decreases registered in more than half of the activities composed by this sector, among them Manufacture of other transport material and Manufacture of consumer electronics. Nevertheless, some activities in this sector, such as Manufacture of household appliances, register positive rates. A more detailed analysis showed the activities that most affected the annual rate of the IPI in the month of May.

Year-to-date average rates The average rate of the Industrial Production Index stood at 1.6% in the January-May period. By economic destination of the goods, Durable consumer goods (–9.3%), Capital goods (– 2.2%) and Energy (–0.3%) presented negative average rates in this period. Conversely, Intermediate goods (4.9%) and Non-durable consumer goods (3.0%) registered positive average rates.

Evolution of the IPI, adjusted for the calendar effect After correcting the calendar effect, that is, the difference between the number of working days in a given month in different years, the interannual variation of the IPI in the month of May was 3.3%, one point higher than that registered in April.

Results by Autonomous Community Twelve Autonomous Communities registered positive interannual variations in May, with Extremadura (39.1%) and Principado de Asturias (19.5%) of note. In turn, Canarias (–8.0%) and Illes Balears (–4.3%) were the Communities showing the greatest negative annual rates.
