A little over an hour by boat from Buenos Aires across the River Plate, and a two-hour drive from Montevideo, the Uruguayan city of Colonia del Sacramento attracts thousands of visitors each year thanks to its colonial Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the late 17th century. Its beauty, the locals say, is matched only by that of the spectacular sunsets over the Plate.

CON UN MATE Y A CORRER MATE TO GO Basta con salir a pasear por casi cualquier zona de Uruguay para descubrir su bebida más social: el mate. Verás a grupos de amigos compartiéndolo en la playa y a personas de todas las edades caminando por la calle termo y bombilla (el recipiente donde se toma la infusión) en mano. A diferencia de otros países como Argentina o Paraguay, aquí el mate se lleva bajo el brazo y se bebe en todos lados. Paseamos por varios puntos icónicos de Montevideo para entender esta relación inseparable.

A short stroll is all you need in Uruguay to discover the locals’ favourite drink: mate, a caffeinerich, bitter tea-like infusion. You’ll see groups of friends sharing it on the beach and people of all ages walking down the street with a bombilla (a kind of filter straw) and Thermos in hand. Unlike other mate-drinking countries such as Argentina or Paraguay, here it’s drunk on the move. We took a stroll through Montevideo’s city centre to ask why people drink it anywhere and everywhere.

EL CABO DEL CIELO BACK TO BEACH BASICS Desde 1880, la única luz que alumbra las noches de Cabo Polonio es la de su faro. Los 70 residentes de este refugio costero hippie, a unos 100 km de la frontera con Brasil, usan generadores de energía solar para tener la electricidad básica. Al no haber contaminación lumínica, son muchos los visitantes que pasan la noche admirando las estrellas, entre ellos Mª Victoria Berra: “Es un cielo muy hermoso, se aprecia en todo el cabo”. Otro de los atractivos de este entorno de dunas y playas, ubicado en un parque nacional protegido de 250 km2 , son sus lobos marinos. Su caza se prohibió en 1998 y desde entonces miles de ejemplares viven en las islas frente al faro.

Since 1880, the only light illuminating Cabo Polonio by night has been its lighthouse. The 70 residents of this coastal hippie retreat, less than 100km from the border with Brazil, use solar power generators so the cabins and hostels have basic electricity only. With no light pollution, many visitors spend the nights admiring the stars. Maria Victoria Berra is one of them. ‘The sky is beautiful,’ she gushes, ‘and you can feel the lack of pollution.’ Besides the dunes and beaches located in the 250km2 national park, the resident sea lions are a key attraction. Hunting them was banned in 1998, and since then thousands have bred on the bay islands. Indeed now there are many more sea lions than there are people.

The loudspeakers vibrate with the voice of the commentators, the audience applauds and an advert for a brand of mate tea fills the air. No, this isn’t a football game; we’re at the Criolla Internacional del Parque Roosevelt, one of Uruguay’s biggest horse shows. With 12 horses for every 100 Uruguayans (that’s third-highest in the world per capita), seeing gauchos (cowboys) is hardly uncommon. At the Criolla Internacional, the horsemen – who’ve come from Uruguay and other countries with a cattleranching tradition such as Brazil, Argentina and Chile – show off their skills with wild horses. The winner will take away a first prize of 40,000 pesos (about €1,100), although it’s more than a question of money. ‘Being a gaucho runs in the genes; I always rode to school on horseback,’ says Ñúber Fernández. With more than 70 years in the saddle behind him, he’s proof that you’ve got to start early if you want a chance at being the best some day.

El campeón de estas jineteadas se lleva un primer premio valorado en 40.000 pesos (unos 1.100 euros). Pero nadie se hace gaucho por dinero. “Es algo genético: iba siempre a la escuela en caballo”, cuenta Ñúber Fernández, capataz de campo y mandamás de las criollas. Sus más de 70 años al galope demuestran que para alcanzar la cima hay que empezar temprano.

It’s in this area of Montevideo that this musical rhythm developed from the drums of African slaves. Today it’s so deeply ingrained in local culture you can hear it every weekend in Parque Rodó, Barrio Sur and the Malvín area. In candombe the drums talk. Listen out for the three most popular rhythms: the Cuarena, Ansina and Cordón.

The fact that Uruguay’s streets and houses smell of roasted meat on Sundays should surprise no one in the country with the most cows per capita in the world: 3.8 per inhabitant, no less. Like mate tea or football, here the Sunday roast is practically a religion whose service includes meeting with friends and family to enjoy different cuts of grilled meat. For a lesson on grilling cuts, we stopped by Cabaña Verónica, whose wood-fired oven is in one of the 15 stalls that feed locals and visitors alike in the historic Mercado del Puerto in Montevideo.

Just a few years ago, El Bajo in Montevideo’s old town was a depressed area synonymous with crime and poverty. But then, in 2013, a collective of artists saw the potential of the beautiful abandoned colonial houses and decided to occupy them with the help of the local government, with the aim of using creativity to breathe new life into this historic district. LA TORRE DEL SABER LIBRARIES IN THE AIR Desde su inauguración en 1928, el Palacio Salvo es la gran atracción arquitectónica de Montevideo. Los 27 pisos de este edificio de hormigón armado y estilo Art déco, influido por otras corrientes, se reparten por sus 95 metros de altura y acogen a una comunidad de unos 1.500 vecinos. Uno de ellos es Abelardo García Viera, que nos recibe sobre los suelos de mármol del vestíbulo con una declaración rotunda: “Llamadme torreteniente”. El apelativo se

Abelardo tenía 40 años cuando se instaló aquí un 13 de junio de 1978. Desde entonces, ha ido convirtiendo estos pisos en una gran biblioteca. “Está todo lleno de libros, hay unos 100.000”, nos cuenta entre el pasillo que forman una enorme pila de enciclopedias de Historia (su especialidad) y otra de tomos de arte. Motivado por su afán coleccionista, Abelardo compró otros cuatro pisos en otras plantas del edificio para seguir llenándolos de libros. Con esta impresionante biblioteca en las alturas, que nadie le diga que el saber no ocupa lugar.

Abelardo was 40 when he settled here on 13 June 1978, and he’s been converting the flats into a library ever since. ‘It’s jam-packed with books; there’s about 100,000,’ he says from a makeshift aisle between a huge stack of history encyclopaedias (his speciality) and art books. A lifelong collector, Abelardo has also bought four other flats on other floors of the building. With such an impressive library high in the sky, it can’t be said that there’s no place for knowledge.
