ERNEST GURULÉ A generation ago, despite a nascent movement today referred to by many as green, few gave thought to things like polar ice caps or greenhouse gases. But today, these terms and others are heard, read or seen on a daily basis; all warn about the fragile and finite nature of the planet. Colorado is a state that has been proactive in the move to address a more thoughtful, practical and sustainable approach to daily living. From the legislature to city halls across the state, new laws have been enacted addressing the need to move toward a more renewable way of living. Environmentalism, it has been said, is not simply about saving nature as much as it is about saving civilization. Despite the fact that there were two open-ended American wars ongoing and a long dormant Icelandic volcano suddenly waking up and essentially shutting down CONTINUED

From a state college that is renowned for its green programs to the new energy being powered by wind turbines, Colorado is at the top when it comes to taking a green initiative. Overlooked, however, may be the subtle but ongoing efforts by those who are helping the environment by keeping it clean. One such example is the work being done by Adopt a Highway Maintenance Corporation (AHMC). Through AHMC, companies and organizations are able to assist their communities by adopting a sign viewable for all to see on a highway or interstate. Companies and organizations not only receive exposure, but their contributions go toward AHMC’s upkeep of the area where the sign is located and which keep it beautiful and clean. In Colorado, roadways signs are available on I-70, I-25, I-225 as well as several others. Fees are upwards of $200 to $400

BERTHA VELASQUEZ Company is setting standard for green movement. On a weekly basis, households prepare their trash the night before for the early morning pickup the next day. While the consensus may be that the waste is all heading to an island nation made up of heaps of trash, the company managing people’s waste is taking a different approach. Waste Management has a recycling program were residents can place their recyclable materials on their curbside for pickup — the purple bins. “At Waste Management, we seek to develop recycling programs that complement a responsible, comprehensive and cost-effective plan to manage the entire waste system”, states their website. The company, which serves 49 states, also offers the recycling of high grade paper, general office pak recycling, data destruction to

Colorado Politics Tony Ferrufino for City Council

Tony Ferrufino announced his candidacy for the City Council District 8 seat as he filed his request with the office of the Clerk and Recorder Elections Division. A native of Denver, Mr. Ferrufino is married with two children and is currently employed by KBNO Radio as Director of Operations. In his first official statement as a candidate, Ferrufino stressed the importance of seeking public office: “As an 8th year resident of the Park Hill community I am honored to have been given the opportunity to pursue this seat and serve the people of my district.” Ferrufino will be a write-in candidate following the passing of former Councilwoman Carla Madison. “As a husband and a father I am very concerned about the future of my district. Helping the growth of small businesses, the creation of new jobs, the safety of our neighborhoods and the education of our children are of paramount importance to my campaign and the main reasons behind my candidacy,” said Ferrufino who also serves as president of Robby’s Friends a non-profit organization that helps children stricken with cancer.

CU conservatives sweep student government elections

Twenty-eight conservative students at the University of Colorado-Boulder swept student government campus elections winning every seat they ran for including the presidency. The students ran as part of the INVEST party and now hold the majority in the Colorado University Student Government (CUSG).

Earth Day volunteers

One small non-profit in Denver is gearing up to make a big impact for Earth Day, and volunteers are needed to help. Groundwork Denver is recruiting volunteers for Earth Week to provide environmental and energy efficiency resources during a series of events. Volunteers can help with a range of activities from tree planting to neighborhood outreach to bicycle tire repair. Training will be provided. During the Strive to Not Drive outreach events, volunteers will go to West Highland homes offering residents a range of resources to encourage them to bike, walk and try public transportation. Residents can receive a free bike map, a local hiking and biking guide, bus maps and schedules, and other resources, including a free pedometer, bike light, or RTD passes.

2011 Arbor Day contest winner

Jeneva Moreno, a fifth-grade student at Denver’s Doull Elementary School has been selected as the winner of the 2011 Colorado Arbor Day Poster Contest. Jeneva’s poster, which depicts the importance of trees and how they benefit our community, will be on display at the State Capitol until April 21, along with the posters of the other 43 state finalists.

Four men to be ordained deacons

Beginning at 10 a.m., Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., ordained four men attending the two seminaries of the Denver Archdiocese to the diaconate, as a step toward ordination to the priesthood on Saturday, April 16, in the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. As deacons, these men will promise to imitate Jesus Christ specifically in his witness of charity and service to those around him. The men ordained on Saturday were: Wojciech Gierasimczyk, 30, of Poland; Manuel Bonilla Naranjo, 28, of Ecuador, St. John Vianney Theological Seminary; Samuel Morehead, 27, of Berthoud, Colo.; and Ryan O’Neill, 27, of Fort Collins, Colo.

Gov. John Hickenlooper and Lt. Governor Joe Garcia will be among the dignitaries to cut the ribbon at the Grand Opening of the Library & Academic Resources Center (LARC) at Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday, April 22. In keeping with its goal of securing a LEED Platinum designation, the facility includes an innovative chilled beam mechanical system, efficient water and lighting fixtures, and daylight harvesting to dim lighting when spaces are lit by natural daylight. Nearly half of the materials used on the project had some level of recycled content.

On April 13 and 15, firefighters from the Greeley Fire Department conducted “bus rescue/extrication training” in Greeley. The Fire Department took advantage of an opportunity to utilize some old buses that are being scrapped and/ or destroyed. The fire crews participated in potential rescue scenarios simulating a school bus or city bus that has been involved in a crash, which would require emergency crews to gain access to multiple “patients” and being unable to utilize the buses doors. The exercises allowed the fire department personnel sharpen skills in multiple “patient” care and specialized cutting and extrication tools such as the “jaws of life.”

Escuela Tlatelolco’s “Champions of Change”

Escuela Tlatelolco will celebrate and honor leaders who have devoted their lives to human rights and social justice and have dramatically improved the lives of people in the Denver community. The 2011 Champions of Change will be recognized at the 11th Annual Flor y Canto fundraising event on Friday, May 20 at the Ninth Street Historic Park on the Auraria Campus. The City and County of Denver, Denver Public Schools and Main Street Power Company Inc., a Colorado-based solar developer and financier, are celebrating the completion of a landmark two megawatt distributed solar photovoltaic (PV) project on 12 Denver Public Schools, bringing the district’s total to 28 schools, and 11 City and County of Denver sites. “This project is another great example of how publicprivate partnerships can benefit our entire community,” explained Mayor Vidal. “In this case, the City, Denver Public Schools and Main Street Power are coming together to create jobs, save taxpayer dollars and reduce pollution.”

Results are in: Current Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan won reelection. Jonathan ran against Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change. Though an independent organization looking into the validity of the election declared that Jonathan had won, the opposition has claimed fraud due to coercion. Several riots in the northern region of the country have since broken out because of the election results.

In Asia

U.S./ Japanese ties: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Japan on Sunday to discuss U.S. support in the island nation after a powerful earthquake stuck the country in March. The Japanese government recently announced that it would force Tokyo Electric Power, the company running the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to compensate those who have been affected by the nuclear disaster.

In Latin America

Changes in Cuba: Cuban President Raul Castro made unprecedented remarks saying that top political office holders should be limited to two five-year terms. On Sunday, Cuba celebrated 50 years of communism after the U.S. failed Bay of Pigs invasion. Answers to Allende’s death: A Chilean judge has ordered the body of former President Salvador Allende to be exhumed to verify his cause of death. Allende is believed to have committed suicide during the 1973 coup that gave power to Gen. Augusto Pinochet, but some still question if Pinochet’s people killed him.

In North America

Storms over the South: The Southern region of the United States have been hit with several storms causing the death of at least 45 and destruction of many homes along the way. Several states, including Virginia have declared state of emergency. Texas burning: Several wildfires have burned hundreds of thousands of acres in Texas. A firefighter was killed last week while battling a blaze, several homes have burned to the ground and Texas Gov. Rick Perry has requested a federal emergency for the state.

In the Middle East

Activist killed: Vittorio Arrigoni, an Italian national, who was known for his support of Palestine was murdered in Gaza last week by al Qaeda sympathizers. He was kidnapped and found strangled. Troops killed: Five troops from the 101st Airborne Division were killed when a suicide bomber dressed in an Afghan military uniform bombed a military base in Afghanistan. Troubled times: It is reported that at least eight people have died since protests have taken place in Syria between those who are pro-democracy and security forces. Helping to fuel the fire was the death of tribal leader Sheikh Badr Abu Moussa while he was under custody after being arrested. Earth Day around the world

Earth Day, first begat by United States Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin, takes place on April 22. Internationally, the United States designated April 22 International Mother Earth Day two years ago. Earth day is organized by the Earth Day Network. This year the United Nations celebrates the International Year of Forests. Through this effort, several international organizations will do their part in saving the world’s forests. In Africa, the African Research Network will be based around the continent in Ghana, Nairobi, Tanzania and Senegal doing research and reporting. In the Republic of Korea, they are hosting an international symposium meant at combating desertification. Doing its part too will be Bulgaria who held a number of events during the first week of April in honor of both the International Year of Forests, but also to honor the country’s professional foresters.

Este año las Naciones Unidas celebran el Año Internacional de los Bosques. Por medio de este esfuerzo, varias organizaciones internacionales ponen su parte en salvar las selvas del mundo. En Africa, la Red Africana de Investigaciones tundra su base en el continente en Ghana, Nairobi, Tanzania y Senegal haciendo investigaciones y hacienda informes. Easter is also about Jesus the Jew

As we approach Easter weekend, we are reminded that Christians all over the world look to the heritage of their salvation as beginning with a man on a cross in a troubled part of the Middle East some two David Conde thousand years ago. Jesus died there as a Jewish prophet and was resurrected three days later as an icon that was to become God for the rest of the world. The birth of Christianity led to the eventual dissolution of the Roman Empire and an orthodoxy that in part created and maintained the Middle Age in Europe. A somewhat altered Christian movement known as Protestantism arrived as part of the European Renaissance to proclaim a more liberating personal relationship with God.

To this day, most Catholics trace their origins to the beginning of the Christian Church in Rome and Protestants look for comfort in the letters from St. Paul to the small churches especially those located around the Mediterranean where he spent so much time preaching. To this day also, Catholics emphasize the sacrifice of the bleeding Christ on the cross while Protestants look more to the triumph of the resurrected Jesus walking around with the wounds of salvation. Historically there have been major differences between Catholics and Protestants and a kind of hatred that invited religious bigotry. This however, has taken a back seat to the consorted effort by the two to influence government especially on issues favoring men over women. The rise of the feminine and the slow demise of the patriarchy are unleashing forces of transformation that are certain to affect our belief in God. By the same token, the cultural transformation of America is

bringing to light the inconsistencies of our Christian religious belief system. The history of the treatment of Jews especially in Europe and America is a story that ebbs and flows but continues to be part of our make up today. Much has been written about the “chosen people” and their dispersion out of the land of Palestine and the unbelievable ordeals they have faced many times at the hands of Christians. Things got so bad in Hitler’s Germany where the Nazis murdered some six million Jews during World War II that today the German Constitution makes it a crime to deny the existence of the Holocaust. Such is the effort to legislate something that can not be controlled by words. In the United States, anti-Jewish feelings run so deep that they keep the Jewish Anti-Defamation League very busy. AntiSemitic remarks are a common part of our free speech in demonstrations and even in everyday conversations. There are and have been major political

efforts to bridge the gap between Christians and Jews. So much so, that today the preservation of the State of Israel is one of the cornerstones of American foreign policy. Christians largely teach from a Bible that includes the Jewish Old Testament and the Christian New Testament. This bridging of the gap between the Old and New Testaments is many times celebrated by visits to the Holy Land especially around Easter. Yet the murmur of a hidden and revealed hatred toward the Jewish community is a reality in our time. It is as though that we can bridge the gap of words of the Bible but not with the people who make up so much of its story. Easter is the commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. Let’s not forget that this borrowed icon who came to save his people has always been and will always be a Jew. Hasta ahora, la mayoría de los católicos trazan sus orígenes al comienzo de la iglesia Cristiana en Roma y los protestantes buscan alivio en la cartas de San Pablo en las pequeñas Iglesias del Mediterráneo en donde él pasó mucho tiempo predicando. Hasta el día de hoy también, los católicos enfatizan el sacrificio del Cristo que sangra en la cruz, y los protestantes lo ven mas como el triunfo de Jesús resucitado que camina con las heridas de la salvación. Históricamente ha habido grandes diferencias entre los católicos y los protestantes y una especie de odio que invita la intolerancia religiosa. Esto sin embargo, queda relegado al esfuerzo conjunto de los dos para tener influencia sobre el gobierno especialmente en problemas que favorecen más a los hombres que a las mujeres. El levantamiento de lo femenino y la caída paulatina del patriarcado son fuerzas ponderosas de transformación que con certeza afectarán nuestra creencia en Dios. De la misma manera, la transformación cultural de América está trayendo a la luz la inconsistencia de nuestro sistema de creencias religiosas y cristianas. La historia del trato de los judíos, especialmente en Europa y en América es una historia que se entreteje y fluye pero continúa siendo parte de nuestra cultura de hoy. Mucho se ha escrito acerca del “pueblo escogido” y su expulsión de la tierra palestina y los problemas inmensos que ellos han enfrentado muchas veces de parte de los

cristianos. Las cosas se pusieron tan feas que en la Alemania de Hitler los nazis asesinaron cerca de seis millones de judíos en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y hoy la constitución alemana criminaliza negar la existencia del holocausto. Este es el esfuerzo del legislar algo que no puede ser controlado con palabras. En los Estados Unidos, los sentimientos anti judíos son tan profundos que mantienen muy ocupada la Liga de Difamación Judía. Notas anti-semíticas son una parte común de nuestro libre discurso en demonstraciones y aun en conversaciones diarias. Ha habido y se han hecho grandes esfuerzos políticos para cerrar la grieta que separa a cristianos de judíos. Tan grandes, que hoy la preservación del estado de Israel es una de las piedras fundamentales de la política extranjera americana. Los cristianos enseñan en general a partir de una biblia que incluye el Viejo Testamento judío y el Nuevo Testamento cristiano. Este puente de unión entre el Viejo y el Nuevo Testamento se celebra muchas veces con visitas a la Tierra Santa, especialmente durante la Pascua. Sin embargo el murmullo de un odio escondido y reconocido contra la comunidad judía es una realidad de nuestros tiempos. Es como si pudiéramos cerrar la grieta de las palabras de la Biblia, pero no con la gente que es una parte tan grande de su historia. La Pascua es la conmemoración de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús Cristo en Jerusalén. No nos olvidemos que este ídolo prestado que vino a salvar a su gente ha sido y siempre será judío.

Fox on Mexican Issues Fox habla sobre

ESTEBAN L. HERNANDEZ Former president of Mexico Vicente Fox visited the University of Colorado at Boulder on April 13. Fox spoke about a diverse range of subjects, including education, the war on drugs and how Mexican migrant workers continue to inspire him. “In many ways, they are my heroes,” Fox said during his 90-minute speech. “The Mexican labor force is competitive, quality.” Fox said that migration is not a local or state issue, but a federal one. “Migrants are a very special case: it’s people that have the will, the passion and to do better for themselves and their families,” Fox said. “This is what Mexican migrants do. They come here to work.” Fox’s administration lasted from 2000 to 2006. He was brought to campus by the Distinguished Speakers Board, a student group at CU. Some of the issues plaguing Mexico, including a bloody war against drug trafficking that is leaving thousands dead, depends heavily on the United States, Fox said. He said U.S consumption yields billions of U.S. dollars that are laundered in the private sectors, which in turn end up in Mexico and help fund bribes for local officials. “Violence, crime, drugs, that’s not our problem,” Fox said. “We just happen to be in-between the drug-producing nations of the south: Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, and the huge, the mammoth market of drug consumption in the United States.”

When it comes to shipping your gifts, however, extra miles are not a good thing! Try to choose gifts from local, independent stores or, if shopping online, research vendors that use green shipment ideas. air travel across Europe, neither was a big enough story to capture the headlines last April 20th. The headline on television and in newspapers a year ago was the catastrophic oil spill unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico, just fifty miles off the Louisiana shore. On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill began with a malfunction deep underwater that soon turned into one of the country’s worst environmental nightmares. Eleven workers were killed in an explosion within hours of the oil rig’s first sign of trouble. From beginning to its end on July 15th, this off shore drilling disaster was responsible for nearly five-million gallons of crude spilling into the gulf, impacting livelihoods, causing grotesque environmental damage and impacting an entire region’s economy. A year later, the pain from the British Petroleum disaster has lessened but is far from fading from memory. In many places along the Gulf Coast signs of normalcy are returning; resorts are reopening and hoping for a full summer rebound, shrimpers and fishermen are returning to the sea and signs of renewed life are buoying environmentalists’ hopes. Concurrent with this percolating optimism, the Department of the Interior is confident enough that a repeat of the BP disaster won’t happen again that it is issuing new permits to drill in the Gulf. The move to open up more drilling in a

And the ‘green dream’ that companies like renewable energy giants like Vestas represent doesn’t stop there. The Brighton CEO says companies like Vestas like working in areas where similar companies cluster. “We hope to have an announcement soon from a bio-energy company. We’re also working with a solar company that will also bring a significant amount of jobs, as well.” The challenge of weaning the state and the nation off fossil-based energy sources is one of math and politics. Because coal is relatively cheap, abundant and easily accessible, it’s an easy choice. Also, in coal producing states, long-tenured legislators wield a lot of clout. So as long as they hold sway and the price of coal remains relatively low, it will be an uphill battle for clean and renewable energy. But there is a glimmer of hope for new energy, especially for the most abundant and infinite source of all. “From the late ‘70s, the price per watt (for solar energy) has dropped,” said Bill Scanlon of Golden’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Today, installed solar energy while still not cheap, is at least becoming more competitive. Installed, solar energy sells today for about three dollars a watt, down from eight dollars in the late seventies. “We want it to get down to about two dollars a watt to be competitive,” he said. Oil dependence is not going away any time soon. For the foreseeable future, the U.S. will continue to lead the world in consumption — by a long shot. Even with gasoline inching toward the four-dollar a gallon mark, the U.S. continues to have the world’s largest appetite for this finite resource. As a nation, the U.S. consumes approximately 20-million barrels of oil each day. In the aggregate, the oil consumption for China, Japan, India and Russia, still falls behind the U.S. But as long as the U.S. is finally acknowledging the damaging and long-term downside of fossil fuels and being rewarded for harvesting energy out of thin air, things may be looking up for Planet Earth.

The Colorado Rockies have become the pride of the Mile High City holding the best record in baseball. Although it is much too early to crown the Rockies the National League West kings of the hill, they have become a team fans can brag about to their Dodger, Yankee and Boston friends. Since April 1st, the Colorado Rockies have been a force beating BRANDON RIVERA teams in their own stadiums with ease. Last week Colorado traveled to the “Big Apple,” to face the New York Mets sweeping the series 4-0. The Rockies returned home over the weekend to host the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field. Colorado shut out the Cubbies in game one but dropped game two on Saturday. Sunday night’s game against the Cubbies was close … close until the eighth when the Rox chalked up 4 more to beat Chicago 9-5. Colorado started a new three-game series with the defending world champs Monday night at Coors Field and despite Colorado’s most recent success nothing seem to

be enough to handle the San Francisco Giants. The Giants jumped out to an astonishing lead in the first inning. By the end of three, the Rockies were facing a monumental eightpoint deficit. “The Freak,” Tim Lincecum threw for six and one third innings and fell short of a nearly perfect no hitter. The “questionable,” 5 feet 11 inches, longhaired “freak,” showed why he is considered the best pitcher in Major League Baseball. Game three is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon starting at 1:10 p.m. In other sports: The Denver Nuggets’ lost game one of their seven-game first round series against the Oklahoma Thunder Sunday night. Although Denver played extremely well, outscoring the Thunder in the paint, the Nuggets foul shooting was, well just FOUL. Denver went 21 of 33 from the line while the Thunder shot an impressive 22 of 28. Denver and Oklahoma are scheduled to tip off Wednesday night in Oklahoma at 6 p.m. MST. Future highway disputed A Madrid-based Construction firm is in talks with Jefferson Parkway Public Highway Authority officials regarding the financing, design and building of a 10-mile stretch of toll road in Jefferson County. The $204 million dollar estimated cost is projected to run from the Jefferson County airport through U.S. 36 in Broomfield to Colorado 93. Officials have come under fire by residents of both Golden and Boulder, and City of Golden officials are prepared to go to court in hopes of blocking negotiations.
