Stay Road Safe in Brackley Help Elfy cross the road safely Brackley Elves want to make sure all the children in Brackley know how to cross the road safely, so we have launched our ‘Stay Road Safe in Brackley’ project. As part of our launch in February 2023, we asked local primary school children for their assistance to finish our road safety poster. Via contact with schools and social media, we invited the children to create a character to help Elfy cross the road safely. The winning entry was designed by Charlie Higginbottom Age 8 from The Radstone Primary School. A big thank you to Clockwork Design who have digitised his drawing which has now been given pride of place beside Elfy on our awareness posters. Over the coming weeks, the posters will be installed around key crossing points in Brackley as well as featuring in the windows of our local businesses. We have also encouraged local schools to take part in upcoming ‘Beep Beep! Days’ hosted by Brake, the road safety charity, aimed at children aged 2-7. The next Beep Beep! Day is taking place on 26th April and aims to provide little ones with the road safety basics through fun activities as well as raising awareness among parents about protecting children on roads.

Brackley is a busy and growing town, so working with our local policing team, we are also planning to arrange some fun and informative visits to Brackley schools to raise awareness of road safety in the coming months. Ways to help lift your mood The way we are feeling can be constantly changing. Many things can dictate our mood such as external factors including our job, family, health, the weather and stress. Our thoughts can also affect how we are feeling. When we are stressed, anxious or depressed brain fog can develop which means we find it hard to think logical, to stay focused, make decisions and to be in the moment. One thing that you can try is to rate how you are feeling out of 10. 1 is the worst 10 is the highest. If you are feeling a 3 what would move you to a 3 and a half? We don’t always have to make big leaps up the scale to start to feel better. Small increments are also fine. The higher up the scale we are the clearer our thoughts are, the less stressed we are and our anxious feelings start to decrease.

What is a Remortgage? A remortgage simply means moving your mortgage from one lender to another normally when your fixed interest rate is coming to an end. So, you don’t move home, you just move your mortgage. Much like you do for better terms on car insurance or home insurance renewals. At the same time as remortgaging it’s a good opportunity to look at changing the term or releasing equity for home improvements, consolidating debt or even buy another property. When couples separate and new partners move in, a remortgage is also an ideal time to add or remove a partner. Affordability and criteria checks have to be carried out by the new lender and a licenced conveyancer will carry out the legal work to swap the mortgage over. It’s always a good idea to review your mortgage regularly, but the best time to look at remortgaging is around 6 months before your existing rate is due to end. You’ve then got plenty of time to make changes to your mortgage and reserve a new rate. There are a vast number of mortgage customers rolling off historically low fixed rates this year. They’ll be faced with very different interest rates to the ones they’ve been used to and will want to chat through options to help manage the monthly cost. Evenley Wood Garden Set amongst the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside, Evenley Wood Garden is a 60-acre privately owned woodland garden containing a large collection of flowers, trees, shrubs, and wildlife. Hosting a number of themed events throughout the year, Evenley Wood Garden has something for everyone to enjoy whilst in the great outdoors.

Tell us a little about yourself and how your business originated? Originally purchased in 1980 by Tim Whiteley who recognised the potential of the wood, he proceeded to apply his abundance of knowledge and experience by transforming the wood garden over the following 37 years.

How are you making a difference to the local community? This year has seen our team grow with the addition of a Wellness and Nature Connection Coordinator. She has begun to offer wellness walks, guided meditation, bushcraft, and foraging to encourage people to see the garden as a benefit to their mental health and wellbeing. After the testing times of the last few years, we all need to focus on our relationship with Nature.

What is in store for the garden in the future? 2023 is set to be an extremely exciting year for us in the garden; after the devastation of removing huge sections of Ash due to Ash Dieback, in December 2022, 1000s, of tree saplings were planted to replace the ash and create a semi natural woodland. Along with this we will be planting some more exotic tree species this year, particularly along the pathways and stream bank, such as eucalyptus, Birch, Weeping Beach & Willow. Our Spring mowing guide As we approach the spring equinox and the days grow longer, the whole world seems to wake up a little. Increased sunshine causes our bodies to produce more vitamin D which in turn gives us all an energy boost and a little spring in our step. Here’s what you need to know about spring mowing: Increase frequency Now as your lawn’s growth rate begins to increase, you may find you need to start cutting the grass 1-2 times a week in order to keep it looking neat. If you’re gearing up for your very first cut of the year, you need to be careful to try and minimise the amount of damage caused by this first mow… which brings us neatly on to the next point. Work your way down slowly Each blade of grass contains nutrients that keep it healthy, so when you cut the grass some of those nutrients are cut away along with the excess organic matter. For this reason, you should never cut more than a third of the length off in any one mow, or the lost nutrients will cause your lawn to yellow and look lifeless. So while the temptation might be there to whack the lot off down to your desired length – especially if your lawn is particularly shaggy after a winter recess – you must resist doing this as the damage caused will take a long time to repair.

Avoid wet mowing Spring is often a particularly wet season in the UK, as the jet stream moves north bringing in strong winds and downpours from the Atlantic. While the increased temperature and sunshine means your lawn needs mowing more often, it is really important that you don’t mow when the grass is sodden. It’s also better to avoid mowing too early in the morning when dew is still on the grass, which will also make you more popular with your neighbours! Collect your map and follow the arrows to find their Easter friends around the garden. Once completed collect your Easter treat from the Easter bunny.
