Fish Activity 8

Place the fish with shapes or numbers facing down, child uses fishing pole to catch a fish, if he or she is able to identify the fish, he/she gets to keep it. Otherwise parent names the fish and it goes back into the pond. Materials needed: construction paper, pencil or crayons, scissors, wooden stick, yarn, tape and magnet. Measuring Activity

Choose a non-standard measuring unit, such as steps, thumbs, graham crackers or toothpicks. Have your child measure a table, a chair, the distance from the kitchen to the bedroom, using this unit. For a challenge, have the child estimate how many units will be needed to measure the size or distance. Materials needed: toothpicks or any non-standard measuring unit Kindergarten Standard: Identify shapes and numbers. (California Math Standard: Compare objects by length, weight, or volume. Sorting and Classifying Buttons Activity

Have your child take a handful of buttons and divide the buttons into counting cups by different attributes such as color, shape or amount of button holes. You may also ask your child to count out how many buttons are in each cup. Materials needed: Variety of buttons and paper cups Kindergarten Standard: Algebra and Functions-Identify, sort, and classify objects by attribute and identify objects that do not belong to a particular group (e.g., all these buttons are green, those which are red). Beans Estimation Activity

Color one side of the beans white and leave the other side its natural color. Have children place an amount of beans inside the cup and shake them together. The beans are spilled onto the table and children will read the combinations of how many are showing red and how many are showing the painted white side. Have children paint on the bean group page the amount showing red and the amount showing white. Materials needed: paper showing bean groups, pencil, crayons and paper cups. Kindergarten Standard: Collect numerical data and record, organize, display, and interpret the data on bar graphs and other representations: Record numerical data in systematic ways, keeping track of what has been counted.
