• Parents : Wladyslaw Sklodowska • Marie was the youngest of five children, following siblings Zosia, Józef, Bronya and Hela. • Marie”s parents were teachers. • Marie lost her mother due to tuberculosis 1878.

Marie Curie’s Siblings

• She finished her studies on 1883. • Wanted to study mathematics and physics at Sorbonne university. • To prepare she joined the Flying University. • To join Sorbonne she got a job as governess. • Finally on 1891 she went to Paris.

• Marie met a young physicist , Pierre Currie. • They married in 26th July 1895 in the south of Paris.

• • • •

They had two daughters Irene Curie & Eve Curie. Pierre on 19 April 1906 was in a road accident when he was run over by a horse carriage. Marie and Pierre worked on separate projects. After Marie discovered radioactivity, Pierre put aside his own work to help her with her research.

Marie Curie’s Biography by Eve Curie

• Marie and Pierre researched the mysterious, invisible energy from Uranium and torio. • In July 1898 Curie and her husband published paper on the existence of an element Polonium. • On 26 Dec 1898, the curies announced the nexistence of second element named Radium , word derived from Latin word “Ray”.

Marie Curie’s Signature

• Pierre Curie’s death lead her to take the professorship at Sorbonne University. • First Women Professor at Sorbonne University. • Created a world class laboratory as a tribute to Pierre Curie.

She was inspired by a statement by Pierre had once made her when she was ill: “Whatevere happens, even if you feel like a body that is deprived of its soul, it is our duty to continue the work, despite everything!”

M.Curie with her students

• In 1910 Curie succeeded in gaining insights into the nature of the atom and finally, isolating Radium physically. • She defined an international standard for radioactive emissions that was eventually named after her and Pierre Curie : The Curie

• Marie Curie was a giant in the fields of physics and chemistry. • First person to win two Nobel Prizes . • Is one of only two people ever to win the Nobel Prize in two different fields. • In 1914 Marie Curie set up Radium Institute (now known as Curie Institute) in paris, a radioactivity laboratory created for her by the Pasteur Institute and University Of Paris.
