Fitting and Machining Program. This programme is developed in parallel with the established Samoa Qualifications and National Competency Standards (NCS) at level III for Fitting and Machining. It prepares the learner to enter employment in the fitting and machining industry to work as an assistant to a qualified fitter machinist. The programme is also designed to maximise the international opportunities for recognition of the skills inherent in the certificate.

Learners who are considered competent in all NCSs in year one and year two of the programme will graduate with a Samoa Certificate III Fitting and Machining. A learner who graduates with a Samoa Apprenticeship Certificate Level III Fitting and Machining is qualified to enroll in the Samoa Apprenticeship Certificate Level IV Fitting and Machining.

This programme prepares the learner to become a qualified welder who operates autonomously without supervision, and able to train others in the Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology industry. Automotive Engineering Program. A learner who graduates with a Samoa Apprenticeship Certificate Level IV Welding is qualified to enroll in the Bachelor of Technical Vocational Education and Training (BTVET) programme.

A learner who graduates with the Samoa Certificate III Automotive Engineering is qualified to enroll in the Samoa Certificate IV Automotive Engineering. On successful completion of level IV, learners are considered as a qualified Automotive Tradespersons who operate autonomously without supervision, and qualified to train others in the Automotive Industry.

A learner who graduates with a Samoa Certificate IV Automotive Engineering is qualified to enroll in the Bachelor of Technical Vocational Education and Training (BTVET) programme.

Samoa Certificate II – Fitting and Machining (2022) 1. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: On the basis of raw marks in the SSLC exam or equivalent, at least 140% aggregate total in English and best 3 subjects with at least a 30% in English. 2. MODE OF STUDY: Full-time. 3. DURATION: Not less than two semesters. 4. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE:Unless credit is granted under the Recognition of Prior Learning/Credit Statute, this programme consists of fourteen courses: TFM150, TFM151, TFM152, TFM153, TFM154, TFM155, TFM156, TFM157, TFM158, TFM159, TFM199, TFA100, TOH100, TCS105. 5. PROGRAMME LOAD: Six or seven courses per semester. An underload or an overload has to be approved and signed for on the Enrolment form by the Dean or the Dean’s nominee. 6. PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS:To be awarded the Samoa Certificate II - Fitting and Machining a student must pass the fourteen courses specified in 4 above. 7. specified in 4 above. 7. These regulations are effective from 1 January, 2018.

Competency Base Training Competency Based Training is training that is designed to allow a learner to demonstrate their ability to do something. • This may be to make a coffee table, create a brochure, lead a tour or deal with a difficult customer. Why competency is based training important? Competency-based training is used to develop valuable characteristics and skillsets in individuals, leading to greater employability and life-long learning. ... Defining key competencies in a specific, measurable way gives learners a clear picture of the path they need to follow to become masters of that skill. What are training competencies?

Occupational Health and Safety(OHS) The National University of Samoa recognizes its legal and moral responsibilities in the health, safety and welfare of its University community. Thus, it is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace and to eliminate personal injury or ill health. Members of management are responsible for the health and safety of staff and students working under their direction.

Roles and Responsibilities. Staff and Student Responsibilities To ensure compliance with this policy, staff and students are expected to; • Ensure that their action or negligence to take action at work does not harm themselves or anyone else • Report all hazards, injuries, incidents and workplace illnesses to the respective Dean/Director and record them on the appropriate documentation • Cooperate fully with any rehabilitation plan to ensure a prompt return to work from injury or illness

Competencies denote the skills and behaviors needed to demonstrate mastery of a skill at a particular level. In order to provide quality organizational training and education programs, personnel require skills in assessing, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating training programs.

First Aid Kits

What are the three pillars of competency?

Note: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY AND HANDBOOK.

A competency is made up of the following three elements: skill, knowledge and attribute.

Fire

NUS will ensure that First Aid Kits are readily available on site. The OHS Committee will determine the contents of each kit to suit the activity, the location and persons responsible.

Recognition of Current Competence (RCC)

Follow the instructions of the Fire Warden, identified by a high visibility vest (usually yellow/orange)

Meet at the workplace designated ASSEMBLY AREA.

The principles used to assess recognition of current competence will be based on the following: i. RCC is accessible to anyone with skills and knowledge that can be validated ii. Opportunities are made available to the applicant to receive guidance and support iii. RCC procedures ensure that assessment is fair, valid and consistent iv. RCC should be awarded for current and relevant skills and knowledge achieved without regard to duration, place, or method of learning.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) This regulation is established under Section 25 (2) (j) of the National University of Samoa Act 2006. This regulation enables students who have previously passed at NUS or another recognised tertiary institution or for TVET programmes, those who have substantial skills gained through work experience or non-formal learning, to gain credit in an NUS programme. Definitions; i. Credit is the application towards an NUS qualification of courses passed at another recognised tertiary institution. If the qualification is completed, credit would normally be limited to one-third of the NUS programme. ii. Cross credit is the application towards one NUS qualification of passes gained in another qualification at NUS, at the same or lower level, taken concurrently or previously. iii. Part or all of the credit or cross credit may be granted specifically (specified) or generally (unspecified). iv. Recognition of current competence (RCC) for TVET programmes where the applicant has no formal prior learning but skills have been gained through work experience or nonformal learning. v. The deadline for applications for all four types of credit shall be the end of the second week of lectures in each semester. 2

Students Responsibilities: University Expectation Students are expected to: a) Be familiar with the rules and regulations governing the programme of study in which they are enrolled and to ensure that the courses chosen meet the programme requirements for graduation. If necessary seek advice from a Faculty Academic Adviser. b) Be familiar with the regulations for admission and enrolment, course change, assessment and examinations (including cheating and plagiarism), recognition of prior learning, student conduct, and ICT use. (These are in the Calendar) c) Be familiar with each course requirements, attend class as required, participate actively and positively in their learning,

be responsible for their course planning and study, submit coursework on time.

Learning Strategies: To ensure that the student receives the best support for learning, he/she is provided with course reading materials, room for practice where supervision is always conducted by lecturers in addition to structured class-room learning. The support given to students address the need to improved performance of the learning outcomes and relevant performance criteria identified in the course descriptor. Independent learning, small group work, written assignments and other class-room based activities are encouraged to be done and/or submitted on time. Where possible the emphasis will be placed on the gaining of competencies through the student performing skill-related tasks as the major part of the learning experience. Scheduled Independent Learning Students will be encouraged to use the faculty Learning Centre Fale where engineering mathematics/technical drawings and communications studies will be scheduled as support tutorials by

This refers to the time expected that a student will be required to spend of his or her own time, in addition to the specified structured classroom learning and structured independent learning, to achieve the learning outcomes and performance criteria of the course descriptor and the subsequent industry competencies specified. Scheduled Practical Experience: Students are required to undertake scheduled practical experience in the automotive engineering workshops. They will also be introduced to the local network of engineering workshops for short attachments to familiarize them with the real world activities in engineering workshops. Lecturers shall arrange work projects where most of the competency based assessments will be conducted in accordance with the relevant learning outcomes and NCSs. The student will be marked CPT [competence] 75-100%, Note: Some LO require 100% pass when safety of practice is highly crucial.
