Michael G s’ Greenhouses

We survived the horrendous wind last Friday with only a small amount of damage and a lot of stress! Weather is the thing I like the least about owning greenhouses. We opened last Saturday and are pretty well full, with a lot of vegetables and things like that to transplant yet. We do have a cold frame with more cold tolerant plants in it, those are the things you can likely safely plant early in April. We have a lot of hanging baskets and pots, those you can move in on the occasional cold night we still have this time of year. This is the 39th year in business, either we did something right or are extremely slow learners! We do have a wide selection of plants, so come and see us when you think spring is here.

Trivia

Talk of turbines in Bates county is looking to become reality In early February, Mid America Live posted a story titled Is Proposed Wind Farm Just Hot Air? and at that time, details were sketchy as to whether or not the project would become a reality; but it appears it is indeed gaining momentum and has been in the works for at least 5 years. The initial information came via the Butler airport commission as they had received a letter from the FAA asking for comment as the proposed wind farm would have wind turbines located near the runway and in all, most would be located in an area generally east of Passaic, just northeast of the airport property. Mid America Live has made multiple attempts to contact Harvest Ridge Wind Project LLC in Lenexa, Kansas with no response, seeking some type of status of the project that is said to encompass some 53 wind turbines covering about 40,000 acres total in Bates County. It was however, confirmed through the Bates county Commissioner’s office that yes, there was forward movement and it was emphasized that much work would lie ahead for them regarding right-of-way easements and more as the wind farm comes to fruition. With that, it was also noted the Commission is obligated to fulfill those needs without hesitation as there is no county zoning or similar roadblocks that would keep the project from moving forward.

Mid America Live has obtained records from the Bates county Recorder of Deeds office that indicates yes, some 109 “Memorandum of Wind Energy Lease” documents have been signed, stamped and notarized through the Recorder’s office dating back to November of 2017 with the most recent in January of 2023. A closer look at those documents reveal that many would be just be providing right-of-way easements for buried cable, access roads or similar; not all would have a standing turbine per se. Note that a few of those leases (a handful or so) were indeed for placement of temporary wind study towers which have since been removed. Continued next page>

HIGH WINDS created havoc on Friday around the area which resulted in blown transformers, missing roofing and some power outages due to situations as seen here. Osage Valley Electric coop at one point had around 240 without power but fortunately the lights were back on in short order.

2023 Lions Club radio auction a huge success

While covid concerns may have hampered participation in the annual Butler Lions Club radio auction the last few years, the airwaves again came to life with the 2023 effort as nearly a record amount of donations were made by local businesses and individuals alike. Known as the ‘fastest two hours in radio’ the Lions didn’t catch a break as phone lines lit up during the four night auction that was broadcast on KMOE FM 92.1 nightly last week. With 100% of all donations being returned to the community, the Butler Lions Club would again like to heartily thank all who made donations, small and large as well as those who dutifully called and bid as well. And yes, plans are already in the works for the annual auction next year.

Fugitive apprehended in short order Freedom was short lived for Micheal Morris of Butler following a mad dash from authorities on March 27 when he fled as they attempted to take him into custody at the Bates County courthouse. Morris had an active warrant for burglary and domestic assault when he fled on foot around 1:30 pm.

Short of making contact with Harvest Ridge, Mid America Live did some Googling and found two more business names associated with the project, Skyview Wind Project and Autumn Waltze Wind Project. While the connection to the latter is still unknown, it does appear that Skyview is listed as a ‘branch’ of Harvest Ridge. While all three entities do appear in various places on the 109 leases found at the recorder’s office, most all are accompanied with a notary signature by a Martha Long, which to date, we have not been able to contact. We do believe

This map accompanied a questionnaire sent from the Federal Aviation Administration to the Butler airport commission showing proposed locations for some 53 electricity generating wind turbines to be located in an area generally east of Passaic, Mo.

however, she is affiliated with Harvest Ridge Wind Project, LLC who has an office at 16105 W. 113th street, Lenexa, Kansas and we will continue to attempt to make contact with her for a status update on the project. This leaves the lingering question: Does Harvest Ridge have enough land leases signed to actually begin installing the 700 foot high (estimated) turbines? Without hard facts from Harvest Ridge, one could speculate that with 109 leases for 53 turbines (considering leases that simply cover say a small easement for buried cable) they must be getting close? Mid America Live will continue attempt to make contact with all parties involved and updates will be provided accordingly.

Cut it out already It is uncertain whether this was a prank or just plain laziness, however someone chose to fill a porta john at the Adrian city park with junk and trash as seen here. Adrian police chief Chris Dillon says that whoever did this needs a “direction in life” and this type of behavior is “not okay” as it is considered illegal dumping. Anyone with information should contact the Adrian police department and it would be greatly appreciated.

VELCRO NOT NEEDED Downy Woodpeckers eat mainly insects, including beetle larvae that live inside wood or tree bark as well as ants and caterpillars. They eat pest insects including corn earworm, tent caterpillars, bark beetles, and apple borers. About a quarter of their diet consists of plant material, particularly berries, acorns, and grains. Downy Woodpeckers are common feeder birds, eating suet and black oil sunflower seeds and occasionally drinking from hummingbird feeders. The Downy Woodpecker eats foods that larger woodpeckers cannot reach, such as insects living on or in the stems of weeds. You may see them hammering at goldenrod galls to extract the fly larvae inside. Fun Fact: The oldest known Downy Woodpecker was a male and at least 11 years, 11 months old when he was recaptured and rereleased in 1996 during banding operations in California. He had been banded in the same state in 1985.

Recipe of the Week Baked Breakfast Taquitos

4 teaspoons vegetable oil 2 cups chopped cremini mushrooms 3/4 cup chopped red bell pepper 1/3 cup chopped onion 2 cups chopped kale leaves 4 eggs, lightly beaten 4 egg whites, lightly beaten 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese with jalapeños 1 (4-ounce) can green chiles, undrained 8 (6-inch) whole wheat flour tortillas 1/4 cup salsa optional toppers: Mexican crema, chopped fresh cilantro, sliced green onions, and/ or chopped black olives Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a large nonstick skillet heat over medium heat. Add mushrooms, bell pepper, and onion; cook until tender, stirring occasionally, about 4 minutes. Add kale. Cook and stir until wilted, about 1 minute. Remove from skillet. Add eggs and egg whites to the hot skillet. Cook over medium heat, without stirring, until mixture begins to set on the bottom and around the edges. With a spatula, lift and fold the partially cooked egg mixture so the uncooked portion flows underneath. Continue cooking until egg mixture is cooked through but still glossy and moist, 2 to 3 minutes. Return vegetable mixture to skillet with cheese and chiles; stir gently to combine. Fill each tortilla with about 1/3 cup filling; roll up as tightly as possible. Arrange taquitos, seam side down, on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each. Brush evenly with remaining 3 teaspoons oil. Bake in the preheated oven until evenly browned and crispy, about 15 minutes or. Serve with salsa and, if desired, toppers.

What’s Up by LeRoy Cook

Bates County Court News

Now that we’re into April, perhaps there will be some relief from the winds of March. The Third Month certainly blew out like a lion; Friday saw gusts to over 50 knots, snapping wind socks out like a poker. Airplanes tied down outside strained at their moorings as they reached flying speed while sitting still. Not too many aircraft flew in during the often-inclement conditions of the week; we saw a Cessna Skyhawk or two, a Piper Warrior and a Cirrus, and an Army Guard Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter came by. Of the local fleet, Brandt Hall flew his Avid Flyer homebuilt, Rebekah Knight was up in a Cessna 150 and Drake Cashman went to Garnett and New Century, KS. I made one maintenance test flight to return N704EZ to service. It was sad to see the SkyDive KC Beech King Air jump plane depart for its new home on Wednesday, after several years of carrying parachutists up to 15,000 feet. It will be remembered. The Harrisonville airport was shut down last Thursday while pavement maintenance was making temporary repairs to the runway. The planned reconstruction of its runway has been delayed until 2024, so some filling and sealing will keep it usable for now. A survey crew was seen at Butler airport this week, taking sightings and marking parameters for installation of a new LED runway lighting system, coming soon. The biig East Coast Sun ‘n Fun fly-in wound up last week, uneventfully. There wasn’t a lot of new product news forthcoming, traditionally released after a winter of development. Rotax announced its new 916 engine, a little firebreather replacing its 915 motor, now pumping out a Lycoming-sized 160 horsepower for one minute during takeoff, 137 horses continuous. Its first use was in a Cub clone that landed on a postage-stamp size heliport atop a tall building over in Dubai. It took three passes to get the approach just right so the STOL plane could skid to a stop in a few dozen feet. Otherwise, there wasn’t a lot of news from the show. It was announced on the 31st that FLYING Magazine has purchased the struggling Plane & Pilot magazine, promising to continue it as coverage of the lighter piston-engine segment of general aviation. Those are about the only newsrack aviation publications left; most others have gone to digital-only media or are membership-based outlets instead of general circulation. Our question from last week asked about the lack of a button atop the AOPA baseball caps, given out to members of the organization. The button is eliminated to avoid discomfort of the “pill” being pressed into one’s skull under a headset or when hitting the ceiling in turbulence. Reader Matt Poland knew the reason. For next week, we want to know the purpose of the small venturi device connected to a tube under the belly of some airplanes; no, it’s not related to the gyroscope vacuum system. Send your answers to [email protected].

My hero

God in the everyday

Yes, he’s my hero! Especially the day my Fitbit showed I took 20,000 steps just working around outside. My hero I’m talking about is Mr. Wilson Greatbatch who invented the implantable pacemaker. My “miracle day” was January 18, 2021 when I had my pacemaker put in. No way could I have taken 20,000 steps in one day before my pacemaker was implanted after I started having heart issues. I will always be grateful to Mr. Greatbatch and to God for giving him the knowledge and insight to invent this miracle pacemaker that has helped thousands of people, saving many lives even. Although Mr. Greatbatch is not here on this earth for me to thank personally, I would like to tell a little about him in honor of him. He was one of the greatest American inventors of the 20th century. The work he did saved many lives. An incurable tinkerer who constructed a radio transmitter at 16, he held more than 300 patents. His inventions largely shaped cardiology. In 1958 he invented the implantable pacemaker. The first pacemakers were built in the early 1950’s. Some early designs were the size of a television and needed to be plugged into a wall socket. As a young electrical engineering professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he had been working on a heart rhythm monitor when he accidentally stumbled on a way to generate precisely timed electric pulses. He quit his job to work full time on developing a device small enough to fit inside a person’s chest. As we grow older, the heart’s ability to sustain a brisk rhythm diminishes. The pacemaker fixes all that in a 30-minute procedure that leaves a 3-inch scar. It’s been a revolutionary change for hundreds of thousands of people every year. And I can testify that that is true for me. So this is just a small tribute to Mr. Greatbatch who died 12 years ago September 27, 2011 at the age of 92. Mr. Greatbatch, a professed “humble tinkerer,” saw a divine hand in much of what he did. I also see a divine hand in the guidance God gave him in bringing hope and healing to so many. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalms 32:8 TNIV) Love in Jesus, God’s pacemaker-loving servant, Liz Ray

Two Bates County High School students compete at Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK

Two Bates County High School students competed at the world famous Lazy E Arena in Guthrie Ok. On March 25-26 two local area high school students competed in the Border Wars High School Rodeo. One of the largest high school rodeo events was held in Guthrie Oklahoma, where students from across the country converged to compete in various rodeo events. Almost 1,000 junior high and high school students competed. The events included bareback riding, breakaway roping, calf roping, goat tying, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, pole bending, team roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. Students represented 16 states to include Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas to name a few states. Students competed for over $91,000 in payouts, scholarships and exposure to college rodeo teams. Two local cowboys representing the Adrian High School and Butler High School competed among the 20 students in the bronc riding category. While neither one of them had the ride they wanted both boys said it was a great experience and an opportunity to network with other young cowboys and cowgirls. Building friendships and relationships that will last for years to come. Austyn Spurgeon, a junior from Adrian, is currently ranked #1 in Missouri in the bronc riding event in the High School Rodeo Association standings. This is Austyn’s 2nd year competing with the Missouri High School Rodeo Association. When Austyn isn’t participating in high school rodeo events he works for CR Mckellips Rodeo Company and rides in various local rodeo events. Cameron Anderson, a junior from Butler, is in his first year competing with the High School Rodeo in bronc riding events. When Cameron isn’t participating in high school rodeo events he is playing high school varsity baseball as a 2nd baseman. When Cameron’s schedule isn’t full of high school sports he is choring his own horses and is a constant volunteer helping the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. Both cowboys enjoy being a local ambassador for high school rodeo and spend time encouraging the local youth to be involved in the rodeo world. Both cowboys are working hard to qualify to compete at state finals in June at Carthage and hope to move on to the National Finals in Gillette Wyoming in July. There are additional students that compete in other events of High School and Junior High Rodeo that represent Bates County Schools. McCrae Rogers, a junior from Hume competes as a bull rider. Cash Johnston and Addison Johnston, both from Miami School, compete in the junior high division. Cash competes in chute dogging and .22 shooting. Addison competes in pole bending, barrel racing, girls breakaway, girls goat tying. -Submitted with our thanks

Bears Hand the Bulldogs their First Loss

On a windy Friday, March 31, the 3-2 Butler Bears would play host to the undefeated Liberal Bulldogs. The fans in attendance were sure to be blown away, if not by the wind, then by the intense showdown that was set to take place inside the diamond. The Bears were able to score first, taking a 2-0 advantage over the Bulldogs. Heading into the 6th inning, the Bears still sat atop the Bulldogs with a 4-2 score, when Jake Chandler (freshman) stepped to the plate and sailed one over the fence. Chandler’s 2 run homer gifted Butler a 6-2 advantage heading into the 7th and final inning of play. The Bulldogs would pull off a 2 out rally in the top of the 7th to knot the game up at 6 runs a piece and force the Bears to swing the bats at least one more time. Despite allowing the Bulldogs to force the bottom of the 7th to be played, the Bears were still in a good place, as they were at the top of the line-up with Maddox Fennewald, Peyton Jackson, and Eli Cox set to bat. Peyton Jackson managed to get on base, and Eli Cox stepped up to the plate with a chance to end the game, and that is just what he did. Cox got a RBI Single that allowed Jackson to touch home plate and walk the game off. The Bears handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season with the 7-6 victory and improved to a 4-2 record on the season. Zane Carson started on the mound for Butler, and was able to go 4 innings for the Bears. Zane struck out 6 batters, and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits. Brock Lines came in relief for Carson, and gave up 4 runs off of 5 hits and collected two strikeouts in 3 innings. Jake Chandler had a big night at the plate for the Bears, managing to tally 3RBIs to go with his 1HR. Eli Cox, Bryson Kash and Brandon Hammett also had hits for the Bears. The Bears are back in action Thursday as they host El Dorado Springs at home. If you haven’t had a chance to come cheer on the Bears, come out to the ballpark on Thursday! By Cody Morris

The Douty family would like to thank everyone who came and yes, plans are in the works for another big show next year.
