Failure to Meet Stage 2 Disinfectant Byproduct Monitoring Requirements for Drinking Water.

We are required to monitor your drinking water on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards. During October 01, 2022 to December 31, 2022, we did not monitor our test as required and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of our drinking water during this time. This was the fourth quarter 2022, and the first quarter for 2023 sample collection periods. The water sample taken prior to this as well as after, were within the health standards and we will continue to monitor and take samples. We apologize for this oversight.

Michael G s’ Greenhouses

We have been open two weekends and have been pretty busy selling plants. As I have gotten older my ability to gauge what will fit has diminished greatly, so as soon as we have space we fill it right back up. Most years things look about the best in the third or fourth week of April. We have a lot of nice elephant ears that were started last fall, even some of the darker leaf varieties. We have a lot of tomatoes and vegetables going, but will almost certainly run out too early. They do not have the shelf life of most flowers, and that is why we don’t grow more. Once we get open there is not enough time to keep planting them due to the amount of people we have come out (and age). We have hundreds of hanging baskets, flats of annuals and perennials, and thousands of pots of patented specialty annuals to choose from. Come see us. We do not have trees and shrubs. Directions: take I-49 to the Passaic exit, then go east 6.7 miles on blacktop D to county road 7003. It is just after you top the hill with the state intersection sign. Turn north, it is about a mile to the greenhouses. Our physical address is 8587 NE County Road 7003, Butler. We are open 8 to 5 Monday through Saturday, 10 to 4 on Sunday. 816-297-2502

Conflicts and transparency issues found in audit of Cornland Special Road District

Citizens requested an audit of the board that oversees 12 miles of gravel road in rural Bates County Former Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway released the findings from an audit of the Cornland Special Road District. Taxpayers in Bates County petitioned Galloway’s office for an audit of the district, which oversees 12 miles of gravel road outside the city of Butler. The audit resulted in a rating of “fair.” Auditors found that two commissioners were paid for performing road repair and maintenance work in 2021. Commissioners receiving payments for road work services while also serving on the board creates an apparent conflict of interest. Missouri law prohibits elected officials from performing any service for compensation, other than compensation for the performance of their duties. Additionally, the board did not prepare and file IRS 1099 forms to report the payments made to these commissioners. Additionally, auditors found that the board only held one public meeting in 2021, but did not keep an agenda or meeting minutes in compliance with the Sunshine Law. One commissioner indicated to auditors that the board met informally on other occasions throughout the year to discuss and vote on district business without providing public notice or keeping meeting minutes. In one of those informal meetings a vote was taken that awarded road Continued next page>

I figured out why I’m always to tired in April. I just finished a 31 day March!

On April 4th, Butler opened a brand new park and it is aptly named The Kenton and Friends Inclusive Park. This week, Mid America Live caught up with Jesse Schowengerdt and learned more about the new park in an exclusive interview. The need for this park for our community seemed massive as Jesse tells us that currently the closest park to us of this kind is located in Clinton Missouri. The park is billed to have massive advantages for the local communities. Jesse says, “it is our hope that the sensory park will

serve to give children with special needs, disabilities and children on all levels of the spectrum a place where they can play in an environment where they feel safe and where the play equipment is designed to be inclusive regardless of ability. We hope to give parents and educators of children a special place where they can see their child/student thrive and play just like any other child.” While the Kenton and Friends park celebrated the grand opening, the park has been in Continued page 11

While there were many important issues at hand, without a doubt the proposed ambulance tax was high on the list. Despite the best efforts of the hospital and PAC, who held numerous town hall meetings, radio call in shows and other, the tax was shot down with 1,723 for and 1,020 against. At this juncture the hospital is reorganizing their efforts for another run. Mid America Live is planning an interview with CEO Greg Weaver and other officials in the near future to see what the next step will be.

Along with numerous school board seats filled, across the board taxation of marijuana sales (should they happen) passed by a minimum of 2 to 1 across the board. Township tax levy’s took a hit as all failed with the exception of Shawnee and Pleasant Gap. Obviously, taxes didn’t fare well this time all around. With that, Butler welcomes Nick Alkire (Ward 1), Jeff Hall (Ward 2) and Marlene Wainscott (Ward 3) to the city council. In Adrian, Matt Sears will continue his seat as South Ward Alderman and same for David Hummel, representing the Continued next page>

North Ward. The city of Drexel can breath a sigh of relief as the community fire protection district expansion of EMS service gained favor with 63 voting for and 36 nay. Note those numbers reflect voting on the Bates county side as the bulk of the city lies in Cass county where it was confirmed with an additional 111 voting yes and 46 no. With that, Nick McKelvey takes the

Drexel Mayor’s seat and Timothy Eastwood as Alderman at Large, barely edging opponent Terry Baker. While it was the first election for Bates County Clerk Jami Page, she noted that things went smoothly and would like to extend thanks to election officials and all involved as well. The completed Bates county ballot is available on page 9.

Bates County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) is pleased to announce Abigayle McGrew, PA-C has joined the staff of Family Care Clinics. Abby sees patients in collaboration with Dr. James Patterson at High Street Family Care Clinic in Butler, Mo. “Growing up [in Butler], I enjoyed being a part of a small-town community and knew I wanted to spend my life here,” Abby said. Early in her high school career she also knew she wanted to go into medicine, and her ultimate goal was to practice in a rural community. She discovered the physician assistant (PA) profession while shadowing and observed how PAs were fluid among specialties and worked closely with physicians as part of a team. Abby graduated from Missouri State University in 2019 with a Master’s of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. While she was completing her studies, she worked in the laboratory at BCMH. She also gained experience working as a PA in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as well as a rural walk-in clinic in El Dorado Springs. Abby is board certified through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. “I am thankful to come back home to serve my community as a PA,” Abby said. “As a provider, I enjoy taking care of patients of all ages and backgrounds. I believe in shared decision making between

provider and patient to ensure the plan we come up with is the best for all involved. I work to always improve my knowledge and skills to ensure that the people I am caring for are receiving the best care that I can provide. I am thankful to be a part of the BCMH team and give back to the community that helped shape who I am and get me to where I am today.” Abby and her husband Daniel live just outside of Butler and are expecting their first child in June. They look forward to raising their daughter where they both grew up. work business to a vendor owned by a family member of a commissioner. The district also does not have a formal bidding policy and bids or proposals were not solicited for gravel and rock hauling. After flooding damaged district roads in 2019, the district applied for and was awarded up to approximately $130,000 in federal and state disaster assistance grants to reimburse repairs to roadways. The grant requires the district to have a documented procurement policy that complies with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and publicly solicit competitive bids. At the time of the audit, federal and state disaster assistance reimbursements actually received by the district were below the total amount approved and much of the repair work remained unfinished. In 2020, the board asked residents living in the road district to donate money for the repairs. Cousin celebration

God in the everyday

I’m visiting my sisters this week, Lou in Eldon and Katherine in Eugene. And there is a special reason I am here this particular week. I’m here to celebrate the lives of two of my cousin-in-laws—Wilma, my cousin Lloyd Engelbrecht’s wife and Charlie, my cousin Barbara Farris’s husband. My sister Katherine texted me last Wednesday that Wilma had died that morning and then my cousin Sharon called me the next day and said that Charlie had just passed away—one day apart from Wilma. Both had not been in good health for some time and so as we celebrate their lives, we also celebrate that they are now completely healed with no more pain and suffering and also as a real bonus are walking with Jesus now. Both were compassionate, caring, and fun-loving persons and both were a very big part of the Eugene Christian Church, my hometown church that I grew up in and that my great grandfather and grandfather helped to build back in 1907. So this has been a very meaningful week for me in the celebration of my cousin’s lives and in connecting again with so many of my wonderful relatives. And then perhaps the icing on the cake—my cousin Sharon and her husband Ronnie who live in Eldon came up to get me and take me to my sisters and brought me home Thursday. Now I didn’t want them to do this but Sharon knew how I didn’t like to make the almost 3-hour drive down there by myself, and she insisted that I let them come up and get me. And especially after we had just talked about some issues and I had reminded her that she shouldn’t take someone’s blessing away by refusing help. Well, she reminded me of what I had just said, so I laughed and said, “Okay, come on up and get me.” And that turned out to be the biggest blessing because as Ronnie drove, Sharon and I had the most wonderful non-stop conversation and 3-hour visit that we could not have had in any other setting. God has blessed me with wonderful cousins and I thank God for them and the good times I have had with them. “Above all, love each other deeply…” (I Peter 4:8a NIV) Love in Jesus, God’s “cousin-celebrating” servant, Liz Ray

in the works years now, as the idea was first pitched to Butler City Council by Jesse in 2019. Jesse told Mid America that the city was receptive to the idea, “however, I was kind of a one man show and didn’t have the networking support to go through with the idea so it fizzled.” But Kenton (Jesse’s son, who the park was named after), would go on to make connections that would further the progress of the park, “it was also during this time period that my son Kenton attended Rotary with me every Wednesday. It was there that he began a friendship with the city clerk, Corey Snead. Over time, they both developed a bond. Corey had heard about my proposal years earlier from a city council member and approached me with reviving the idea with more supportive people.” Jesse continued to speak about how instrumental the bond between Kenton and Corey was in the advancement of the park, “Corey encouraged me to form a committee of volunteers with varying life experiences to help. The committee consisted of citizens, special needs educators, special need caretakers, special need parents, park board members and city council members.” With the blossoming relationship between Corey and Kenton, the idea of an inclusive park began to make some headway again. Schowengerdt went on to say, “with Corey piloting, we started looking into sensory play equipment manufactures and discussed potential locations for the park. Once we had our idea on paper, we presented our vision to the city council as well as the park board. We had the greatest support on both sides. The overwhelming support we received from the City of Butler, Butler City Council, Butler Parks and Rec as well as the Butler Public Works made this possible. The name for this park, Kenton and Friends Inclusive Playground, was aptly named for the young man this vision started with. However, it will be dedicated to provide ALL children with special needs and disabilities in the community a place for inclusive play.” With a project of this nature, it takes the whole community to make this idea a reality, Jesse is proud of the efforts of many inside of Bates County and beyond that have been involved in this project. Jesse tells us, “I have heard nothing but support from the community, boards and everyone involved. The community has been wonderful and very supportive.” It wasn’t just those who had happy thoughts and words for this project, but there was an innumerable amount of individuals and organizations that took initiative and stepped up to make this happen. “First there were the initial members of the committee that helped in design, planning and spreading the word. Secondly,

Inclusive playground dedication continued

the Butler City Council and the Butler Parks and Rec Board were so instrumental in pushing this forward. Also the City of Butler Public Works helped with labor and prep of the park but will also be in charge of maintaining the park. Solar Shade USA was a great help in providing shade to the park to have a cool resting place. Jim Herrell was a blessing. He helped with the labor of the concrete and donated much of his time and time of his crew. I must give a lot of credit to Corey Snead, the Butler City Clerk. Through his connection with my son, Kenton, it became his mission to get this sensory park done for not only the City of Butler but the surrounding communities. Corey was instrumental in securing funding, gaining approval from the city and the other governing boards. Corey has been the leader and biggest cheerleader for this project and it wouldn’t have been possible without him,” Jesse states. We asked to share more about Kenton, who was the inspiration for the project, Jesse had plenty to share. “I could write a whole entire newspaper about this special young man but I will keep it short. Kenton was born a healthy little boy with no pregnancy complications. However, as he quickly grew our family noticed some things were different. Kenton never passed any of his developmental milestones like his peers and he wasn’t making age appropriate speech sounds or words at a certain age. We enrolled him in a program called “Missouri First Steps.” It was here that we began our initial therapies with him—speech, occupational and physical therapy. His Missouri First Steps caregivers were concerned that he was on the spectrum and encouraged us to look about an official diagnosis. We took him to Children’s Mercy Hospital where they did indeed diagnose him with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Once Kenton had been diagnosed, we made it our mission to get him the help that he needed. We began sharing Kenton’s journey through social media—his successes and his struggles. We used social media as a platform to promote awareness, educate and to build an inclusive community for him to live in. Through grade school, he continued to receive therapy through Butler Elementary. In 2022, we enrolled him in a special school called SOS (Success On the Spectrum). He attends 3 days a week at SOS and 2 days a week at Butler Elementary. SOS is a school for special needs children and children on the spectrum. Its focus is to help build life skills and behavior for successful integration into society. Their primary goal is to give children the best chance to be independent, socially successful and self-sufficient. I would describe Kenton as atypical when comparing him to most on

Corey Snead and Jesse Schowengerdt

the spectrum. He doesn’t mind physical affection, engages in conversation with others, plays well with his peers, understands emotions, etc. He has a phenomenal memory—a photographic memory to be candid. He still struggles with speech and motor skills and sometimes appropriate social behavior. Fast forward to today--Kenton is growing incredibly. He continues to make strides everyday. He has many obstacles to still overcome, but we are incredibly thankful to his educators and this supportive community.” To conclude our time, Mid America Live asked Jesse what this park was going to mean to our community and what his vision was moving forward, and what he would like to see in the future, to which Jesse replied, “This sensory park is a re-

ally big deal for a community of our size. Most major metropolitan cities have multiple parks of this nature but their funding and access to finances leave smaller, rural areas unable to compete. The park has plans in the future for growth and expansion. If you are an individual or a business that would like to donate to further this cause, we would welcome your participation. If you’ve never been to a sensory, inclusive park we welcome you to visit ours.” We are excited about the new park in Butler, and after speaking to Jesse and hearing his passion, our excitement only grew for this new development! If you have a chance, go check out Kenton and Friends Inclusive Park located at the corner of Delaware and Mill Street.

What’s Up by LeRoy Cook Did It Go Up?

Finally—spring has sprung. Gusty winds notwithstanding, anyone with access to an airplane went aloft last week, shaking off the dust of winter storage before the bird residue of nesting season replaces it. Starlings have already moved into my hangar, ignoring my No Vacancy sign. The collection of visiting aircraft was considerable, including some Piper PA-28 and Cessna 172 stop-ins, a Piper Twin Comanche, a Beech Bonanza A36 and the ever-vigilant Army Guard Black Hawk ‘copter. Dr. Ed Christophersen flew down from New Century in his Piper Archer, a Civil Air Patrol Cessna Skylane refueled and a turbine AirTractor applicator airplane tied down. Most of the locally-based planes were exercised; Jon Laughlin made a Mexican run to mid-Missouri in his Piper Cherokee 180C, Jeremie Platt flew his Grumman Tiger, the Beech Bonanzas N35 and F35 were up and Christian Tucker had both of his Cessna 150s in the air. Another Certificated Flight Instructor joined the ranks of flight trainers last month. Jeff Lowe of Clinton completed his checkride at the academy in Cloquet, Minnesota in his Piper Cherokee 180D and is now able to sign logbooks, in addition to being president of AvFab manufacturing in Clinton. Congrats, Jeff! The owners of a Falcon 900 business jet had an Aw-Shucks moment the day after April Fools Day, when their plane ran off the runway at Aspen, Colorado. In an attempt to get the single runway reopened for waiting traffic, a heavy snowplow was hooked on to yank the jet out of the mud. Alas, it didn’t budge and the nosegear tore off, plopping the rest of the aircraft on its nose. That canceled a bunch of ski trips, for sure. This Friday, April 14th, the new Amelia Earhart Hangar museum will be opened at Atchison, Kansas’ airport, honoring the birthplace city of the famous aviatrix. Her family home atop the bluff overlooking the river has long been a mecca for aviation history buffs, but now the airfield will join it. The chief attraction is a Lockheed 10-E airplane, similar to the one in which Amelia was lost. By the time you read this, SpaceX may or may not have test-launched its “Super Heavy” Starship rocket into orbit from the Boca Chica, Texas base. Nearly 400 feet tall, the behemoth has 33 engines and is supposed to be recyclable. Final approval to fire it was pending at press time. Our week’s question was about the purpose of a small venturi device seen under the belly of some military and larger civilian airplanes. That, dear friends, is the end of the “pilot relief tube”, installed for emergency physiological needs of the crew members. The venturi assures positive one-way flow. No, I haven’t ever… For next time, we want to know the origin of the “Lomcevac” aerobatic maneuver term. Send your answers to [email protected].

Student of the Month The Ballard R-2 School District is pleased to be working in conjunction with the Adrian Optimist Club to honor a Student of the Month for the 2022-23 school year. Student of the Month is selected by the staff of the Ballard R-2 School District using the following criteria: attendance, attitude towards others and school, behavior, leadership, and improvement in or maintenance of good grades. This month’s special theme included qualities of cooperation and respect. The Student of the Month for March is Senior, Jacob Kepner, the son of Glenn and Anita Kepner. Jacob currently participates in VoTech training, and “chillin”. In his free time, she also enjoys meditating, relaxing, and playing his favorite games. His future plans are to go wherever the wind takes him. Jacob states that one of his inspirations is NBA Basketball player Kobe Bryant, because “he is always willing to work harder than anyone else.” The Ballard Staff has said: “Jacob is steady - a virtue that is hard to find in the halls of a high school. He is focused on his studies at Clinton Technical School. He understands the opportunity given to him and does not take it for granted. He has a lot to be proud of!” and “Jacob is a kind and caring young man who is always respectful to his peers and his teachers. He is an excellent example to younger students and someone they can look up to. He cooperates well with others and gets along with almost everybody he meets.” and “Jacob has been a great person to get to know and spend part of my school day with. He is always polite, kind, and respectful. His positivity always leaves me with a smile.” and “Jacob is a student that can ALWAYS make me smile without even trying. He has a laid-back demeanor that makes everyone he encounters feel accepted and comfortable. He unknowingly brings humor wherever he goes. Jacob is humble, respectful, and a great friend to have.” and “Jacob conducts himself politely and with respect. When I see him in the hall he always has a friendly greeting and a smile. He’s just a nice kid!” For Jacob’s hard work in school, he is receiving a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks.”

A SIMPLE SNIP and the ribbon cutting was competed for First Class Heating and Cooling (formerly Hon Heating and Cooling) located at 305 N. Independence St in Harrisonville. High Scoring Affair Excites Lady Bears Fans If you weren’t watching Butler Lady Bears Softball on Thursday Night, you were missing out! The Bears, who were sitting at 1-5 played host to the 2-8 El Dorado Springs Bulldogs. This conference match-up would end up wearing out the scoreboard as the Bears and Bulldogs squared off in a high scoring affair. Avery Eldrid would begin in the circle for the Lady Bears, and would get out the first 3 Bulldogs batters that she faced. Then in the bottom of the first, the Bears would draw first blood, as Cloey Fritts would get on base with a single, and would be batted in by a double off of the bat of Gracee Lesmeister. At the conclusion of the first inning, the Bears looked solid with a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs however would answer in the 2nd scoring 4 runs of their own. Sydney Davis would begin with a lead off single for the Bears to start the bottom of the 2nd, with Haven Humphrey joining her, reaching with a fielder’s choice two batters later. Miranda Foster, the 9 hole hitter, would bring both Davis and Humphrey in with a 2 RBI double. The Bears weren’t finished yet, as Foster plated by an RBI double by Cloey Fritts. Cloey would then score off of a base hit by Lesmeister. The Bears would take a 5-4 lead after 2 innings. The Bulldogs would reclaim a lead after the 3rd, as they outscored the Bears 2 to nil, which brought the total to 6-5. But the Bear’s went on a scoring frenzy, tallying 11 runs of their own, after holding the ‘Dogs to 0. The Lady Bears rally was kickstarted by Brooke Miller who got on base via an error, followed by Cloey who was hit by a pitch, Zoey was then able to bring in Miller with a base hit RBI. Now with 2 runners on, Barth was able to bring them both home with a 2 RBI base hit of her own. Davis was hit by a pitch following Barth’s base hit. With two runners on, and two outs recorded, Haven Humphrey was struck out, but reached first base on an error by the El Dorado catcher, which would load the bases full of Bears. Foster was then hit by a pitch to drive in yet another Bears run. Brooke Miller was then able to get an RBI base hit, followed by a 2 RBI double for Cloey Fritts. Lesmeister was kept rally going by double herself. Zoey Fritts followed that up by reaching 1st on an error, followed by Barth taking a base on balls. Sydney Davis then got an RBI base hit before the inning was concluded. So after a high scoring 4th inning for the Bears, they led 16-6. The Bears looked like they were in a position to run-rule the Bulldogs if they could hold their 10 run advantage through the 5th, but the Bulldogs wouldn’t go away that easily, as they scored 5 in the 5th. That would bring the score to 16-11 as the Bears were unable to score in the bottom half of the inning. In the 6th, the Bears would cross home plate a total of 3 times, to the Bulldogs 4, bringing the total to 19-15 heading into the 7th. The Bulldogs would rally to put up 8 runs, taking a 23-19 lead as the Bears were set to swing the bats in the 7th. Needing 4 runs to force extra innings, and 5 to walk it off, Brooke Miller would lead off for the Bears, getting a base hit up the middle, followed by a base hit by Cloey Fritts as she poked a ball over the head of the shortstop. Lesmeister loads up the bases after being struck by a pitch, followed by an RBI base hit up the middle by Zoey Fritts. Joliegh Barth brought in Cloey Fritts with an RBI. Then Davis got an RBI as she brought in Zoey and reached 1st herself on an error. Cumpton then keeps the Bears rolling an RBI single, bringing in Barth. The Bulldogs were able to get out of the inning by catching Sydney Davis attempting to steal home, and then striking out the following batter. And just like that, we were headed to bonus softball! With a score of 23 a piece, we were set for extra innings. The Bulldogs would drive in 1 run in the 8th to take a 24-23 lead. The Bears would then go to work, with Miranda Foster leading off the additional inning for the Bears. Foster would get a lead-off single, placing a ball right past the infield. After the following batter struck out, Cloey would tie the game with an RBI double, driving in Foster. Lesmeister would step to the plate and walk it off, as she brought in Fritts. After a barrage of scoring, the Bears would win 25-24 and improve to 2-5 on the season! Cloey led the Bears, scoring 7 runs on 5 hits in 5 at bats, and racking up 4 RBIs. Foster, Davis, Barth and Lesmeister would all tally 3 RBIs on the night as well. The Bears swung the bats well as they totaled 22 hits on the night with only 8 strikeouts.

The game was tied at three with the Bears batting in the bottom of the fourth when Brandon Hammett drew a walk, scoring one run. Butler earned the victory despite allowing El Dorado Springs to score three runs in the first inning. El Dorado Springs got things moving in the first inning, driving in one. In the bottom of the first inning, Butler Bears tied things up at three when Junior Cameron Anderson singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. The Butler Bears scored seven runs in the sixth inning. The big bats were lead by Brandon Hammett, Bryson Kash, Eli Cox, Peyton Jackson, and Cameron Anderson, all driving in runs in the inning. Senior Zayn Carson was the winning pitcher for Butler Bears. Carson allowed one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out eight. The El Dorado Springs started the game. The hurler lasted four innings, allowing two hits and four runs while striking out four. The next pitcher for the Bulldogs threw one inning out of the bullpen.

Brock Lines started the game for the Butler Bears. The pitcher lasted one inning, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out one and walking one. The Bears racked up ten hits on the day. Cox, Anderson, Jackson, and Kash each racked up multiple hits for the Butler Bears. Kash, Jackson, Anderson, and Cox each collected two hits the lead the Butler Bears.
