From the Executive Director “As a staple in the community for over 57 years, NLSM continues to be dedicated to optimum legal, advocacy and service delivery for a variety of community stakeholders. We are committed to fighting for citizens facing landlord-tenant disputes, those who are homeless, abused by caregivers, survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, and those seeking entitled assistance with Disability and Social Security Insurance. We are also committed to providing students with educational enrichment in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

During 2022, the Children’s Education Division provided programming in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and the Flint Beecher School District. Programs included:

• NLSM assisted select students in obtaining Six Sigma certifications.
Forecast for the future: NLSM seeks to firmly establish itself as a leader in providing students with VR technology and quality educational experiences. NLSM will further develop current partnerships to lead in the area of STEAM education and innovation.

Elder Law & Advocacy Center (ELAC)
ELAC provides civil (non-criminal) legal services to eligible persons 60 years of age and older in Wayne County. ELAC provides legal advice, outreaches, and support to caregivers, who live within Wayne County or are caring for someone who lives in Wayne County. Additionally, ELAC provides legal advice and assistance to kinship caregivers (55 or older) who live in Wayne County. Elder abuse situations are given the highest priority. ELAC prevents/addresses financial exploitation, including powers of attorney and wills; protection and defense in consumer matters; and assistance in landlord-tenant matters. Elder Abuse prevention education is provided throughout Wayne and Monroe Counties. ELAC conducts numerous outreach and educational presentations for seniors, caregivers, and professionals. These sessions focus preventing elder abuse, addressing legal problems and providing general civil legal advice.
