The Smith Center
• Students will stay at the Smith Center three days and two nights. • They will participate in outdoor activities whatever the weather. • Whether we go in spring, winter or fall…be prepared!

Stream Study • Students will explore the watershed and learn their place in it. • They will collect and analyze data to determine stream health.

Exploring the Watershed • Working with a team, students will find orienteering poles located at various places at the outdoor education site. • They will use tools and observation skills to describe the landscape around the pole. • They will be examining the relationship between the surrounding land and the health of a stream.

Predator/Prey • Students will experience predator/prey relationships. • They will participate in a simulation activity and collect data based on that experience. • They will then analyze the data to better understand the roles of animals in the ecosystem.

Confidence Course • Each center has a confidence course designed to challenge students mentally and physically. • All activities are designed to increase confidence and to promote teamwork.

History Hike • Students will explore the history of the area and the family that settled on the farm that became the Smith Center.

Student Service Learning • At the Smith Center, we will complete an activity related to the science curriculum that earns students SSL hours. • This is one of the evening activity rotations.

Evenings at Outdoor Ed. Students won’t be going home at the end of the day, so they will participate in many evening activities at the Smith Center.

Costo
• $80 per child
• $80 por niño/a
• MCPS considers Outdoor Education a part of the sixth grade curriculum. All students are expected to participate in Outdoor Education. • If your family cannot afford the full cost, please contact Mr. Gonzales or Ms. Burgos. MCPS provides money to cover the difference. •The final payment is due April 5, 2013.

There are 8 cabins. Twenty people can sleep in each cabin. Boys and girls sleep in separate cabins under teacher supervision.
