August 2011 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Although it may seem somewhat distant, our Regional Religious Educational Congress is just around the corner on Saturday October 22. The theme this year is, “Live the Freedom of the Spirit! Vive la Libertad del Espiritu!” The theme is drawn from Romans 8:1-13, where St. Paul reminds us that if we live our life under the direction of the Holy Spirit, we will be free from the oppressive weight of the law, and from the fear of breaking the law and of being punished for breaking it. Rather by following the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will always keep the law of God without ever having to think of it or worry about it. What a sense of freedom comes to us when we follow the Spirit! To follow the Spirit of God, we must know the Spirit of God, and we must experience the presence of the Spirit in our lives. Live the Freedom of the Spirit”. The sessions and workshops of our congress this year are designed to speak to this theme. They will help us know the freedom of living in the Spirit, the freedom of the children of God. They will help us to communicate to others the freedom that comes from knowing and following God’s Spirit in our teaching and in our lives. As we pass through the listless days of summer and the energetic days of fall, I invite you to mark your calendars and select your sessions and workshops for our annual regional congress on October 22nd. El tema este año es ¡Vive la Libertad del Espíritu! En este tema, inspirado en Romanos 8:1-13San Pablo nos recuerda que si vivimos nuestra vida bajo la dirección del Espíritu Santo, seremos liberados del peso opresivo de la ley y del temor de faltar a las leyes y de ser castigados por faltar a las mismas. Por el contrario, al dejarnos guiar por el Espíritu Santo, siempre estaremos bajo la ley de Dios sin siquiera pensar o preocuparnos acerca de ello. ¡Qué sensación de libertad nos acoge cuando seguimos al Espíritu! Para seguir al Espíritu de Dios, debemos familiarizarnos con l y debemos experimentar la presencia del Espíritu en nuestras vidas. “Vive la Libertad del Espíritu” Los talleres de nuestro congreso este año están diseñados para hablarnos sobre este tema. Nos ayudarán a conocer la libertad de vivir en el Espíritu, la libertad de ser hijos de Dios. Nos ayudarán también a comunicarles a otros la libertad que viene del conocer y seguir al Espíritu de Dios en nuestras enseñanzas y en nuestras vidas. The theme of our congress this year “Live the Freedom of the Spirit!” reminds me of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in his famous novel “The Man of la Mancha” in which he says: “ Freedom, Sancho, is one of the most precious gifts from heaven to mankind. There is no greater treasure on earth or in the sea. It is because of freedom that one dares to venture life.” I hope that the variety of workshops and the diversity of speakers will help you affirm and enrich the faith and life that you generously share with our brothers and sisters of this Region. Again this year, besides the presentation of the “Virgen Peregrina” to another parish, in the closing ceremony we will recognize those catechists nominated for their outstanding service to the community. 1-01 VISIONS AND HOPE: LIFELONG FAITH

1-04 CHANGING THE ENDING: FAITH, EXCELLENCE,

FORMATION This session will envision lifelong faith formation with special emphasis on adults at the center. We are called to attend to the adult church knowing that if we provide excellence for adults it will filter down and out to children and youth. How then do we educate and evangelize for a living faith for the whole community? What are the hopes, dreams and challenges for engaging in this enterprise? Sr. Edith Prendergast is currently the Director of Religious Education of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and directs the Annual Religious Education Congress. This event attracts over 40,000 participants annually. She holds a Doctorate in Ministry from Claremont School of Theology, and a Master's Degree in Theology from Boston College. She is a frequent speaker nationally and locally and has written and contributed to several articles on Spirituality and Catechesis.

AND STEWARDSHIP FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS The challenges that educators face in educating the leaders of tomorrow are great. This workshop looks to how Catholic schools can innovate and grow in order to meet the evolving technology demands of today. Kevin Baxter: Dr. Kevin Baxter was appointed Superintendent for Elementary Schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in July 2009. He graduated from Villanova University with an English Major and Communications Minor. He holds a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education and a California Clear Credential in Biology/General Science from Loyola Marymount University. He also has his Tier I and Tier II Professional Administrative Services Credentials. He holds a Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Southern California in Educational Leadership. Dr. Baxter is a parttime faculty member in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University where he teaches in the Master’s and Doctoral programs. Dr. Baxter is the author of the book Changing the Ending (NCEA, 2011).

1-02 IT IS RIGHT AND JUST: WE LIFT OUR HEARTS ANEW We Catholics pray what we believe and believe what we pray. Come prepared to engage the new texts of the Mass, our most central prayer, and learn practical ways to share its richness with students. Christopher Bazyourus: Fr. Chris was born and grew up in the San Gabriel Valley. He entered St. John's Seminary after receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. Ordained in 2003, he has served in the Archdiocese and is currently pastor of St. Albert the Great and is a member of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission. Brian Nunes: Having earned a bachelors degree in communications from Loyola Marymount University, Fr. Brian Nunes worked in journalism for several years. Eventually he found his true vocation and began studying theology at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2008. He currently serves as Associate Pastor of Mary Star of the Sea in San Pedro, and is a member of the Archdiocesan Liturgy Commission.

How can we make certain that the grace in our classrooms overflows? Join me for lessons on how to build the most fun-filled and grace-filled religious education program or school. Anita Herrera: Anita Herrera is currently a junior grade teacher in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and a recent graduate of Loyola Marymount University. She is a parent, former 12-year DRE, and a member of the Los Angeles Early Childhood Board. Anita has conducted numerous workshops and is a regular speaker at regional congress as well as the Los Angeles Congress. Humor is her favorite teaching tool.

THE FIRST LAST AND THE LAST FIRST?? THE GOD OF LABORERS (MATHEW 20:1-16) In this workshop we will explore in depth the story of the laborers hired to work in the vineyard, from Matthew 20:1-16. The landowner here (God) seems unfair in so many ways, and yet the parable speaks to God's mercy and grace. Why do some people experience God's mercy while others do not? Is God fair? What do we learn about the meaning of discipleship and faith from this parable? Jeffrey Siker: Dr. Jeffrey Siker is Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Loyola Marymount University, where he has taught since 1987. His academic degrees are from Indiana University, Yale Divinity School, and Princeton Theological Seminary. His areas of study include various aspects of early Christianity, the history of biblical interpretation, and the use of Scripture in ethics. He is the author of numerous articles and several books. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church.

THE DIRECTORY FOR MASSES WITH CHILDREN TODAY Learn about the provisions of the Directory for Masses with children and innovations allowed in the liturgy for working with young people. Prepare worship experiences that speak to children and young people. Adapt to use language that is understandable and helps kids lift up their hearts in praise and thanksgiving. Dale Sieverding: Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Monica Catholic Community responsible for directing the Worship Life of a large progressive community on the West Side of Los Angeles. Dr. Sieverding serves on the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission and is an active member of the Liturgical Formation Committee. He holds the Doctorate in Sacred Liturgy from San Anselmo in Rome.

Rosalie Callen: Sr. Rosalie Callen is a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet and has been working as a Columban Associate in Mission Education in Los Angeles for the last 13 years. She graduated from Mt. St. Mary's College with her BA, and St. Michael's in Vermont with her MA in Theology/ Spirituality. Sister Rosalie taught in elementary schools in: San Francisco, Tucson, San Diego and inner-city schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles working with children and youth of diverse cultures. As a Columban Associate, Sr. Rosalie had mission immersion experiences in Mexico and Peru and did Mission experience talks in our elementary schools for the Holy Childhood Association. Linking the Catholic Social Justice Teaching to the 5ht Commandment of THOU SHALL NOT KILL Christopher Ponnet: Ordained LA Archdiocese 1983 Pastor and chaplain at St. Camilus Center for Spiritual Care since 1995, Director of Office of Catholic HIV/AIDS Ministry, Board of Death Penalty Focus, Pax CHristi USA, Angel Interfaith Network, MLGC Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Catholics and Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace

Previously, she held positions at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community, ranging from teacher and assistant principal in the elementary school to parish DRE, overseeing and developing programs for all age groups. She holds a B.A. in English and a M.A. in Religious Education (both from Immaculate Heart College) as well as a California teaching credential. A certified Media Literacy Educator and a Master Catechist for the Archdiocese, Joan also serves as a judge for the HUMANITAS Prize, which rewards writers of film and TV shows that both entertain and enrich the viewing public.

2-03 PRAYING THE MASS GENEROUSLY: BEYOND 2-05 MAKING CATHOLIC SOCIAL JUSTICE

THE NEW TRANSLATION Fr. Dominic will present highlights from his Praying the Mass parish mission, in which he leads people in prayerful reflection on the new translation, the role of music and gesture, letting the Word penetrate, praying the Eucharistic Prayer, preparing for Mass, and living out the Mass. A fun, interactive, and prayerful session that explores today's theme of generosity by asking how giving ourselves more fully to God and one another in the Mass leads us to increased generosity in the rest of our lives.

TEACHING STICK: HOW TO ENGAGE CHILDREN AND YOUTH AND TRANSFORM LIVES This "hands-on" workshop will provide effective and engaging educational techniques and resources for helping children to understand and live the Church's social mission. Discover how to use media, technology, activities, games, and role plays to help your students experience memorable and life-changing learning and worship experiences centered on the social justice teachings of the Church. You’ll take home lots of hands-on experiences you can use in your classroom right away.

Dominic Delay: Fr. Dominic is a liturgist and filmmaker. He is founder and president of Mud Puddle Films, which creates contemplative cinema that opens minds to mystery, hearts to hope. His award-winning short films are popular tools for religious education for youth and adults. Fr. Dominic joined the Dominican Order in 1985. After receiving graduate degrees from the Dominican School at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, he was ordained in 1993. Giorgia Diomedes is currently working as the Inclusion Facilitator of ABC Unified School District supporting teachers and paraprofessionals develop appropriate and helpful strategies for working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other behavioral or physical difficulties. Before moving to the La Mirada and Cerritos area she worked for LAUSD for seven years as Special Day Class teacher and two years as Special Education Bridge Coordinator at Los Angeles High School. She began her teaching career at a Non-Public School in Glendale teaching and behaviorally supporting students with more profound and severe disabilities for nearly two years. She is a Behavior Intervention Case Manager and has her Master’s degree in Special Education. Giorgia has three children and has been married to a youth minister for 8 years. Through her experiences working with children and adults with special needs and coming to understand the challenges of the day to day workings of a youth ministry program, she approaches the spiritual and educational challenges of the church and its programs holistically and practically.

Michael Kennedy has been a priest for over 35 years, working with the poor and disenfranchised in California, Mexico, Central America and South America. He is also the author of five books that present a dynamic prayer method used in homes, schools and detention facilities. Currently, as Director of the Jesuit Restorative Justice Initiative and as Co-Chaplain at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall (Sylmar, CA), Fr. Kennedy works with incarcerated youths and gives retreats in state prisons.

José Antonio Medina: José Antonio Medina obtuvo su doctorado en teología por la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca en España y es candidato para obtener el doctorado en Sociología por la misma Universidad. Es profesor en diversos Institutos de formación superior de California y Nevada. Ha escrito varios libros entre los que destacan "Diálogos Semanales con Jesús" "Temas calientes para jóvenes cristianos" "Vivir el presente, imaginar el futuro", "Con el corazón lleno de alegría", entre otros. Actualmente es consultor teológico para la Conferencia de Obispos de California y para Libros Liguori.

Roberto Mena: P. Roberto Mena, S.T. es un Siervo Misionero de la Santísima Trinidad, originario de Guatemala, Centroamérica. Es Pastor Asociado de la Parroquia de Our Lady of Victory en Compton, CA. Luis Díaz es creador del programa social “Emoción Activa”, talleres informativos acerca de problemas sociales como la violencia en las pandillas, la drogadicción y la violencia doméstica. Nació en Puerto Rico posee una licenciatura en Comunicación de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Ha coordinado grupos de jóvenes en Puerto Rico en áreas relacionados a las drogas. Fue redactor y reportero interno de Univisión Radio en Puerto Rico y productor del segmento Conocedores del programa radial Frecuencia Alterna. Actualmente es Asistente del Ministro de Jóvenes de la Parroquia Nuestras Señora del Santo Rosario en Sun Valley CA y es conferencista de la arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles en los distintos congresos de educación religiosa.

Jennifer Ayón: Jennifer ha servido como Catequista de Educación Religiosa por 10 años primero con niños y actualmente en la Confirmación. Jennifer recibió una Maestría de Ciencias en Consejería y un Bachillerato de Ciencias en Servicios de Rehabilitación; su énfasis es en ayudar a personas con discapacidades a lograr sus metas personales, sociales y vocacionales. QUE CUIDAR COMO PIEDRA PRECIOSA Dicho taller habla de la creación de todo lo bello que Dios nos dejó, y ¿Que hemos hecho nosotros con esa maravilla? Enumeraremos varios pasajes de la Biblia como base fundamental de nuestra fe Católica, reflexionaremos sobre que hacer y como hacer para conservar ese maravilloso paraiso en el cual aun habitamos y esperamos que nuestras futuras generaciones tambien lo difruten en todo su esplendor como el Creador del Cielo y la Tierra nos lo heredó. El problema es que ellos no reciben un manual para la crianza de sus hijos. Las técnicas que se presentarán en este taller son una clave para ayudar a los padres de familia con la educación de sus niños en cualquier sociedad moderna y democrática.
