New in are refillable catnip toys for cats which come with a tube of catnip. Anything that extends the life of the toy and makes it engaging for a longer time also makes it more environmentally friendly. This toy is also lightweight and designed to appeal to a cat’s hunting instinct. For the dogs there is a new range of tug toys featuring cheetahs, elephants, alligators and more. There’s extra interactivity using the squeaker to add stimulation and appeal for those dogs more attuned to sound, to make play more rewarding.

Here's our monthly lowdown on how to answer those tricky questions about pets, posed by your customers.

Q. Is it only unneutered male cats that spray? Urine spraying is one of the most common cat behaviour problems and contrary to popular belief, uncastrated Tom cats are not the only culprits. While the incidence of this behaviour is higher in unneutered males, both males and females may spray. In fact, studies suggest that 10 percent of males, and five percent of females spray1, with the incidence directly proportional to the number of cats in a household. The impact of this behaviour should not be under-estimated - it can have a negative impact on the pet-owner bond, and is one of the more common reasons why cats may be relinquished to rehoming centres, or even euthanased.

What is spraying? Urine spraying is distinct from normal toileting behaviour. When cats pass urine, they squat and produce a puddle, often showing a preference for a secluded location. By contrast, cats tend to spray on vertical surfaces, often in more obvious locations - door frames, the corner of the sofa, or a wall for example. A small volume of urine will usually be passed with the cat in a standing position and an upright quivering tail. They may also make a treading motion with their back legs.

Why do cats spray? Spraying is part of the normal feline repertoire of territory or scentmarking behaviour, used to help cats communicate with each other, and so help to avoid aggressive encounters

and conflict. In places where a cat feels safe and relaxed, they will often use cheek rubbing, reserving urine spraying for those parts of their territory where they feel more vulnerable or threatened. Spraying can help convey information such as age, sex, or state of health, as well as defining the boundaries of their territory. All well and good when out and about, but not so popular with owners when this behaviour moves indoors. Spraying can also indicate emotional state and is more common in stressful situations, such as multi-cat households. So while spraying outdoors is normal, indoor spraying may be a sign that a cat is not secure or is feeling stressed.

Do neutered cats spray? Neutered cats are much less likely to spray, and this is especially true if a cat is neutered when young before spraying becomes a habit. In fact, approximately 90 percent of intact males and 95 percent of intact females show a significant decrease in spraying after neutering. 2

Prevention of spraying The key to preventing spraying is finding the underlying cause. A trip to the vets should always be advised to rule out medical problems. Reducing stress is likely to be beneficial and in multi-cat households, the provision of adequate resources in terms of litter trays, food bowls and sleeping quarters.

Recent years have seen an unprecedented rise in UK pet numbers and cats are no exception. With the feline population now standing at 12 million, they are second only to dogs in terms of popularity.

So what does this mean for the retailer? First and foremost, there is a need for up to date information on all things kitten, and given the choice that is available in the pet care category, owners also appreciate product recommendations. The tiger within Did you know that cats and kittens are obligate carnivores? This means that they need animal based ingredients in their diet and a carnivorous diet is essential for their health and wellbeing. In other words, the human trend towards plant-based nutrition cannot extend to our feline friends. Plant-based diets are harder for cats to digest but more importantly they are lacking in certain nutrients; taurine, an essential amino acid which is only found in meat and fish, is top of this list. Cats are unable to make their own taurine and a dietary deficiency has serious consequences for health. The first area to be affected is the eye, with a gradual deterioration in

vision eventually resulting in blindness. Taurine is also needed for heart function, the immune system and kitten development. An adequate dietary supply is an absolute must, and is one of many reasons why the importance of feeding a nutritionally appropriate diet should be emphasized, and unless under veterinary direction, home prepared diets should be discouraged.

Kitten nutrition Feeding a diet that is tailored for growth will help get kittens off to a great start. Such diets should contain highly digestible ingredients to support the developing gastrointestinal system, and provide sufficient energy for growth and development, including increased levels of protein. According to the PAW Report 2022, 57 percent of cats are fed a mix of wet and dry food, 18 percent complete wet food and 16 percent complete dry food. Add to that the one percent choosing a commercially prepared raw diet and its easy to see the importance of stocking

Lilies are a definite ‘no’ when it comes to cats. Lily toxicity results in kidney failure and can be fatal. The whole plant is toxic, even the water in the vase. However, often it is the pollen that is responsible for detrimental effects – cats brush past the flower and then groom themselves with potentially disastrous results.

Kitten-proofing As we all know, kittens are into everything - up the curtains, behind the sofa and ready to make a bid for freedom through an open window. It is worth reminding owners to make sure their home is as kitten-safe as possible, and there are a couple of culprits in particular that spring to mind.

As well as being a nuisance, fleas can have serious consequences in kittens. As fleas feed on blood, heavy infestations may result in a condition known as flea bite anaemia, which can prove fatal.

State of the small nation WHAT’S UP WITH RABBITS? We all love small pets and with Easter on the horizon, rabbits are set to take centre stage. In the interest of identifying your next big hop-ortunity, we went down a rabbit hole and took a look at what’s happening in the world of small animals.

There are around a million rabbits in the UK and this has stayed reasonably stable in recent years, albeit down from the peak. Current growth is being driven by millennial and gen Z consumers, with nearly two-thirds of new small pet owners aged between 16 and 34. Small pets are often attractive to ‘generation rent’ as they are more acceptable to landlords, helping to account for some of this popularity. Rabbit owners are more likely to be firsttime pet owners (compared to dog and cat owners) with just under half never having owned a pet. Around a third will buy their pet from a pet shop or garden centre with the remainder buying from friends, rescues, breeders and online.

This suggests that owners of small pets have taken steps to educate themselves and this certainly comes across on social media where it’s apparent there are strong views around anything relating to rabbits and guinea pigs. Rabbit owners also need to be committed – the report identified that 39% of rabbit owners said pet ownership was hard work – higher than for cat or dog owners.

Rabbit feeding and health Despite the apparent knowledge of their owners, 46% of rabbits live alone – often because their companion has died. Pairing rabbits can be problematic and there may be potential to help owners in this area. Providing extra food bowls and hideaways can help considerably in preventing aggression and side by side accommodation is a good way to make introductions gradually. Some 29% of all small pets are obese according to the PFMA. There are some great resources to help assess body condition score in rabbits and there is scope to educate customers in this important area of pet care. Weight loss can be supported by increasing exercise and using toys that allow the pet to forage for their food. Often hay intake can be increased, treats reduced or removed (especially if they are high in fruits or sugars) and a sensible amount of high fibre nuggets fed (or a lower calorie food, such as a senior option), which can all help to reduce weight to the ideal level. According to PDSA PAWs, 26% give human foods such as toast and cheese which are also not nutritionally balanced foods for rabbits. Looking on the bright side, owners are clearly investing in healthcare and some 58% of rabbits are neutered (males more commonly than females) while 52% receive regular vaccinations, although it’s still a game of two halves as 11% have not received any preventive healthcare. It seems that just over 60% of rabbit owners say they feed enough hay (an amount the same as body size is the least that should be provided) and less than a fifth feed muesli as the main food according to the PDSA PAWS report. However, a recent survey of 1000 rabbit and guinea pig owners carried out by Supreme Petfoods showed that over a third of guinea pig and rabbit owners feed muesli

While selective feeding is a concern, it can be overcome by correct feeding practices, ensuring that the food bowl is cleared before topping up. Some small pets have feeding preferences and baby rabbits will often have a strong preference for the food their mothers ate and to which they were introduced at weaning. According to the PAWs report, 80% say they feed their rabbit pellets/ nuggets and 74% feed fresh greens. Small pets are often complex to feed and the need to combine hay, nuggets, greens, and treats can mean that product selection can be difficult for customers. Add in lifestage/ lifestyle variants and different species foods and the small pets fixture can rapidly become confusing for shoppers. Simplifying the category by using clear brand blocking might present a solution.

The shopper’s small petfood choice is often the hardest to achieve and once that need is met, the pet owner will often shop for their other remaining pets. The quicker they can identify the right product, the more likely they will be to spend time browsing other categories. So, the small pet fixture is likely to be a gateway to incremental sales. Take advantage of merchandising solutions and point of sale that help customers to navigate the category.

In the US nearly all rabbits live indoors due to weather and predation issues, but as social media increasingly shows rabbits living the indoor life, so we might anticipate the UK situation to mirror this over time. Around 20% likely don’t provide enough space either indoors or out, while at the other end of the spectrum 11% of rabbit owners have dedicated whole rooms in their house to their rabbits and 27% say their rabbits have the run of the whole house. This is a shift that retailers would benefit from reacting to – the need to create an exciting and enriching indoor environment mean that these owners will be investing in the right products in greater quantities to dress the room. Premiumisation is occurring in the small pets sector and so ensure there is a good, better, best offer to make the most of the opportunity to upsell. It’s very difficult to stock a suitably sized hutch in an average sized retail outlet, so the move to more open indoor solutions such as flexible pens within which there can be multiple smaller hutches to choose from and much wider access across the room or the home, might be a good opportunity. Photographs of ‘ideal’ in-home set ups might present a useful way to show how a smaller hutch can and should be used while still giving rabbits adequate space. There have been some big changes in how people keep rabbits and think about rabbits. It might be time to adapt the in-store offer to appeal to these novice but informed owners and the different ways they are caring for their pets.
