Friday, April 24th at midnight, the YOUNG LORDS ORGANIZATION spc;nsored a benefit at the Apollo Th8at~r in Harlem for Rafael Viera and the National Lawyers Guild. Rafael, HlI3lth Cadre in the YLO and a Citizen of the Republic of .New Africa (RNA), is standing trial right now in Detroit for allegedly killing a policeman at last year's RNA convention, and needs $6000 for his transcripts. The National Lawyers Guild is a body of radical lawyers who represent the LORDS in court, without charging fees. Denise Oliver, Communications Secretary of the New York State YLO, hosted the show, which featured the Latin sounds cif Joe Bataan, rock by the Young Rascals, La Preferida, Elaine Yarborough and the Truth & Soul Ensemble, and the United Elephant Fund, a Latin avant-garde band. Also on hand was the Harley Four, a family of four Karate act that featured • six year old Brother, and the poetry of Pedro Pietrl. Kain, once part of the Last Poets with Chairman Felipe and David Nelson brought a new dimension into the art ~ of poetry. A solidarity telegram from Betty Shabazz, widow of Malcolm X, was read. In keeping with the spirit of the evening. all the artists performed for free, showing people what it could be like in a socialist society. Dbaruba of the Black Panther Party 21) spoke, and told the large • m,,~,~""re to ;~\)!!W~0u{. you"·m-)i btke that' as ~~oiIstructive~ criticism." Oharuba told the Brothers and SI~iers'tO "Come see '6out. Bobby", ref.erring to Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, presently imprisoned in New Haven on phony murder charges. The ~powers in e_rikkka have already decided in advance to murder Bobby in the. electric chair. To combat tbis. Dharuba said, "New Haven is si.. by 25 milliO;A Black People."

RAUL SENDIC We mUst educate ourselves about the TUPAMAROS who ue leadY!8 ~n guerrilla war . . . .·· • .1011'" pres. pacbeca areca. The TUPAMAROS, legendary in all Latin America because of their powerful and creative defense of the poor of Uruguay. We must repeat over and over the name of RAUL SENDIC, the lea~ of . the TUPAMAROS. The noneamericaoo government tries to censor and squash news ~t the Uruguayan revolutionaries; but one task of the YLO, a task we do eagerly and pro'!.'.!y, is to educate Puena RicaDS, Blackll. and the amerikkkan whites about the struggle of our hermanos.

A member of the SocleUat Patty, Sendic' decided in 1960 to organize the sugar :and rk.e wotters of the latifundiaa in the colllltryside. He organized the UT AA (UniOII de Trabajadorea Azucareros de ~). The worker., known as the "peludos" (long haira), began a series of yearly marcbes to Montevideo, the capita.l--marcbes of 600 kilo. meters, demanding "tierras paratrabajar"expropriation of the Wlused latifundiaa. : .. Aat:be years went oil, noDe of the demands .ere IJIet and conditions got worse.
