A Message from Fr. Bill Want to hear some Good News? “Come and See” The “Messenger” has arrived ....and, the news is good! You have a new pastor, and we’ll soon have a new president. New presidents set an amazing agenda for their first “100 days”. New pastors are told to “take it slow”, “don’t rush in and start changing everything”. Of course there will be changes in personal style and slowly you come to know his likes and dislikes; it should be obvious by now that he’s a CUBS fan! Your new pastor is also beginning to come to “know” his parish, his parishioners. Each parish also has a personality, a “feel”, it’s likes and dislikes. And to know and understand those things takes some time. On arriving I’ve reflected on St. Philip’s ‘Mission Statement’ …it’s good and I’m sure it reflects a good amount of thought and prayer …the challenge is to be able to express who we are in ten words or less. Revisiting a mission statement is a good thing to do; our Diocese presented a new mission and vision statement several months ago. I presented a challenge to our parish staff and Parish Council: can we, in ten words or less, come up with a phrase that can identify our parish community, a phrase that can be our logo. Several of our staff members, with great excitement, suggested the words of Jesus to the apostle Philip: “Come and See.” It’s got potential ….I mean, it is Sacred Scripture. What do you think of this one: “We’ve got Jesus. Come and See.” Now the challenge is shared with all of you; can you present us a phrase, ten words or less (and hopefully easily translated into Spanish), that we can adopt as our logo. If we keep it short we can put it on a t-shirt or sweater. After the first 100 days I’m recognizing faces, and little by little I’m matching the names that go with them; please give me a little more time on this one. CHRISTMAS Christmas is in the air, and certainly in the stores! As we approach this wonderful celebration of Our Lord’s birth, I’d like to take this opportunity to share my prayers and wishes for all of you that we may all find peace and joy in our Christmas celebrations. ¿Quieres Buenas Noticias? “Ven y Verás” El “Mensajero” ha llegado …y, las noticias son buenas! Ya tiene un nuevo párroco, y pronto tendremos un nuevo presidente. La tradición para un nuevo presidente es hacer muchas cosas en sus primeros 100 días. Aconsejan a nuevos párrocos a “llévalo al paso”, no comienza con muchos cambios. Claro, su nuevo párroco va a tener su propia personalidad, cosas que le gusta o no; ya saben que es fanático de los “CUBS”! Su nuevo párroco, poco a poco, está conociendo sus feligreses, su comunidad. Cada parroquia también tiene su personalidad, sus gustos y disgustos. Conocer y entender esto lleva su tiempo. Al llegar a San Felipe he reflexionado en cómo ha expresado “Nuestra Misión” …es bueno y estoy seguro que refleja mucho el pensar y oración ..el reto es: poder expresarlo en diez palabras o menos. Revisar como expresamos “Nuestra Misión” es algo que se conseja. Nuestra Diócesis presentó una nueva expresión de “misión y visión” hace varios meses. Yo presenté el reto al equipo de la parroquia y al Consejo Parroquial: ¿Podemos, en diez palabras o menos, encontrar una frase que identifica a nuestra comunidad parroquial? Esto podría ser nuestro logo. Algunos del equipo parroquial, con gran entusiasmo, surgieron las palabras de Jesús al apóstol Felipe: “Ven y Verás”. Yo pensé “No está mal” …pues, es de la Sagrada Escritura! ¿Qué le parece esta frase: “Tenemos Jesús. Ven y Verás”? Aha! Ahora el reto es suyo también; puedes presentarnos con una frase, diez palabras o menos (que se puede traducir con facilidad en Inglés), que podamos adoptar como nuestro logo? Si es una frase corta la podemos poner en una camiseta! Después de los primero 100 días estoy reconociendo caras, y poco a poco poniendo los nombres que corresponden; favor de darme un tiempo más en esto. NAVIDAD La Navidad …está en el ambiente, y ciertamente en las tiendas! Al acercarnos a esta jubilosa celebración del nacimiento de Nuestro Señor, aprovecho esta oportunidad a expresar mis oraciones y deseos que todos encontremos unas celebraciones navideñas llenas de paz y alegría. Free to Give and Free to Take

Libre Para Dar Y Libre Para Tomar

Thank you to all who were a part of the “Free to Give and Free to Take” table in the back of Church. The vegetables and fruits were indeed appreciated by those who brought them in and then appreciated by those don’t have the fresh grown items and could enjoy them. Thank you! Thank you for the items that were brought in for Respect Life time in October. The diapers collected for the 2nd Annual Diocesan diaper drive definitely have been appreciated. For the Love Life collection, did you see the beautiful baby blankets, and outfits that were made for babies as well as the diapers? Some parents and families have been - so grateful! Thank you for your care, skill, time and talents. These are blessings into someone else’s life. A living example of Respecting Life!

Gracias a todos los que participaron en la mesa "Libre para Dar y Libre para Tomar" que estaba en la parte posterior de la iglesia. Las verduras y frutas realmente fueron apreciadas por aquellos que las donaron y también apreciadas por aquellos que no cultivan los alimentos cultivados frescos y podría disfrutar de ellos. ¡Gracias! También gracias por los artículos que fueron donados en octubre, mes de Respeto a la Vida. Definitivamente los pañales colectados para la Segunda Colecta Diocesana Anual han sido apreciados. (minutes of the St. Philip Usher’s Club meeting held December 3, 1941) Reverend Theodore Verbeten opened the meeting with prayer. The appointed secretary read the minutes of the last meeting. Harold Renier, treasurer, reported that there were no funds in the treasury. George Schneider reported that there is two dollars and some cents credit at his store for food purchased at the last meeting. Henry Vanden Elzen suggested a bingo party to get funds in the treasury. He and two other members, John Schweiner and Philip Mikulsky, are to discuss a bingo party with the choirs. A motion was made by Philip Mikulsky and seconded by Walter Kaster that any usher who misses three Sundays in succession should be dropped from the usher list unless he reports to the president of the club that he cannot be present. Ushers appointed for Midnight Mass are Joseph Kaster, Walter Kaster, Richard Linssen, Willard Matzke, and Joe Schweiner. Two new ushers were accepted. They are James Dorsay and John Heezen. Harold Renier made a motion to adjourn and Willard Matzke seconded the motion. Reverend Theodore Verbeten closed the meeting with prayer.

Harold Renier, tesorero, informó de que no había fondos en la tesorería. On The Path To Priesthood

On October 22, our seminarian, José López, was officially accepted as a candidate to Holy Orders in a Mass in Saint Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee. The seminary rector presented José to Archbishop Jerome Listecki, expressing his complete confidence that José had the qualities necessary to become a priest and that God was calling him to this ministry. Then the Archbishop asked José the following: “In response to the Lord’s call, do you resolve to complete your preparation so that in due time through Holy Orders you will be prepared to assume ministry within the Church? Then he asked: “Do you resolve to prepare yourself in mind and spirit to give faithful service to Christ the Lord and his Body, the Church?” To each of the questions, José responded: “I do.” The Archbishop finished by saying: “The Church accepts your resolve with joy. May God who has begun this good work in you bring it to fulfillment." José’s parents, some of his siblings, nieces and nephews had the pleasure of accompanying José on this memorable day. Also a large number of priests and friends were present to share in his joy. The next step for José will be his ordination to the Diaconate which will take place in Green Bay on May 21, 2017 in the Cathedral. In 2018 José will be ordained as the first Hispanic priest in the Diocese of Green Bay.

El 22 de octubre, nuestro seminarista, José López, fue aceptado oficialmente como candidato a los Ordenes Sagrados en una Misa en el Seminario San Francisco de Sales en Milwaukee. El rector del seminario presentó a José al Arzobispo Jerome Listecki expresando su plena confianza que José tenía las cualidades necesarias para ser sacerdote y que Dios estaba llamándolo a este ministerio. Después el Arzobispo preguntó a José: “Al responder al llamado de Dios, ¿tienes la intención de completar tu preparación para que en el debido tiempo por los Ordenes Sagrados estarás preparado para asumir el ministerio dentro de la Iglesia?” En seguida preguntó: “Tienes la intención de prepararte en mente y en espíritu para dar fiel servicio a Cristo nuestro Señor y su Cuerpo, la Iglesia.” A cada pregunta, José contestó: “Sí.” El Arzobispo terminó diciendo: “La Iglesia acepta tu intención con gozo. Que Dios que comenzó esta buena obra en ti lo lleve a su plenitud.” Los padres de José, algunos hermanos y sobrinos tuvieron el placer de acompañar a José en este día tan memorable. También muchos sacerdotes y amigos fueron presentes para compartir en su gozo. El próximo paso para José será su ordenación al Diaconado que se realizará en Green Bay e1 21 de mayo, 2017 en la Catedral. En 2018 José será ordenado como el primer sacerdote hispano en la Diócesis de Green Bay.

- by Diana Sturgeon José Vera, a parish member and former member of our Jornada Youth Group, has recently been accepted as a postulant in the Capuchin Franciscan Friars. During the postulancy, José will continue his studies and vocational discernment. At this time, Jose is providing ministry to Milwaukee’s Capuchin Community Services’ St. Ben’s Community Meal site, a ministry that serves the poor, hungry, and homeless.

José Vera, miembro de nuestra parroquia y previo miembro del grupo de jóvenes fue recientemente aceptado como postulante en la comunidad de los Frailes Franciscanos Capuchinos. Durante este tiempo de postulantado, José continuará sus estudios y discernimiento vocacional. Ahora José trabaja en Milwaukee en un programa de servicio de la comunidad capuchina que provee comida a los pobres hambrientos y albergue a los desamparados.

The Capuchin friars live as a community of brothers, modeling themselves after St. Francis of Assisi, assisting the poor and marginalized. The friars serve in a variety of ministries including social service ministry, schools, chaplaincy, evangelization, and parishes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, and Panama.

Los frailes capuchinos viven en comunidad como hermanos, siguiendo el modelo de San Francisco de Asís, asistiendo a los pobres y marginados. Sirven en varios ministerios incluyendo servicios sociales, escuelas, capellanes, evangelización y parroquias en Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, y Panamá.

José explains, “I attended a four day retreat in Chicago. On the fourth day, I experienced a conversion and my world hasn’t been the same since. I knew I had to give my life to God.”

José explica, “Asistí a un retiro de cuatro días en Chicago. El cuarto día, tuve una conversión y mi mundo no ha sido igual desde entonces. Quedé convencido que tenía que entregar mi vida a Dios.”

St. Philip Parish is fortunate to have two young men who have responded to God’s call to being His disciples. Let us remember these men in our prayers.

La Parroquia de San Felipe tiene la dicha de tener dos jóvenes quienes han respondido al llamado de Dios a ser sus discípulos. Recordemos a estos hombres en nuestra oraciones.

Why St. Philip Parish is Home to Me

St. Philip Parish was built in 1938. My Dad, older brother, and many neighboring farmers, hitched their horses up to slush buckets and headed to what was then the Town of Preble to dig the basement of the church. Under the supervision of Msgr. Theodore Verbeten, the Church and classrooms were soon constructed. The intention was that the present Church would eventually serve as the school gym until a permanent church could be built. Later, as the parish grew, construction of more classrooms took precedence. I was born on February 14th and the very next day my parents and godparents brought me to St. Philip to be baptized. A few years later I entered St. Philip School during which time I made my First Communion and Confirmation. Daily Mass at 8:00am and Religion class were part of each day and Confession was dutifully programed each month before first Friday. The Franciscan Sisters from Manitowoc had charge of the school and were very capable of teaching up to 60 students in one classroom without any major problems. Half of my family (7 of us) attended St. Philip School. During those years many friendships were formed that have lasted a lifetime. After high school, I entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and seven years later was back at St. Philip Parish to celebrate my final vows. Msgr. Verbeten was still pastor! A few years later my oldest brother celebrated his first Mass at St. Philip as a Divine Word Missionary priest. Nine of my brothers and sisters were married in St. Philip and both my parents had their funerals here. The parish has experienced many changes over the years, but it remains HOME for me.

La Parroquia de San Felipe fue construida en 1938. Mi papá, hermano y muchos agricultores vecinos ataron cubetas con aparatos para mover la tierra a sus caballos y se dirigieron a lo que en ese entonces era conocido como el Pueblo de Preble a excavar el sótano de la iglesia. Bajo la supervisión del Padre Theodore Verbeten, pronto se construyeron la iglesia y salas de clase. La intención era que la actual iglesia eventualmente serviría como el gimnasio de la escuela hasta que se pudiera construir una iglesia permanente. Las Hermanas Franciscanas de Manitowoc tenían cargo de la escuela y estaban muy capacitadas para tener hasta 60 estudiantes en una sala sin problemas mayores. La mitad de mi familia (7 de nosotros) asistió a la Escuela de San Felipe. Durante esos años se formaron muchas amistades que han durado toda la vida. Después de secundaria, entré como miembro de las Hermanas de San José de Carondelet y siete años más tarde celebré mis votos perpetuos en San Felipe. ¡El Padre Verbeten todavía era párroco! Unos años más tarde mi hermano celebró su primera Misa en San Felipe como sacerdote misionero. Nueve de mis hermanos y hermanas se casaron en San Felipe y mis padres tuvieron sus funerales aquí. Mi Conexión con San Felipe

My St. Philip Connection

- by James F. Prosser My parents, James and Agnes Prosser, were charter members of St. Philip's from when it was first built in 1938. At the time I was about six years old; now I'm 84. Fr. Theodore Verbeten was appointed pastor. Mother and dad were staunch members of the Altar Society and Holy Name Society respectively.

Mis padres, James y Agnes Prosser, fueron miembros de San Felipe desde su construcción en 1938. En aquel entonces tenía cerca de seis años; ahora tengo 84. El Padre Theodore Verbeten fue nombrado párroco. Mis padres eran fieles miembros de la Sociedad del Altar y la Sociedad del Santo Nombre.

During construction of the Church, Fr. Verbeten celebrated Holy Mass on Sundays in the basement of Oak Grove School, at the corner of Deckner and Main Streets. My first childhood memories center on attending kindergarten and first grade in the school upstairs.

Durante la construcción de la iglesia, Padre Verbeten celebró la Santa Misa dominical en el sótano de la Escuela de Oak Grove, en la esquina de las calles Main y Deckner. Mis primeros recuerdos de infancia son de asistir a kindergarten y primer grado en la escuela allí.

I clearly recall the day Bishop Rhode of Green Bay, Fr. Verbeten and his assistant pastor Fr. Willinger gathered to lay the cornerstone of St. Philip's Church. Officiating dignitaries placed things inside the cornerstone. I asked my mother what they were placing there. She said, "Things that people in the future might be interested in seeing and knowing how things were in the past."

Recuerdo claramente el día el Obispo Rhode de Green Bay, el P. Verbeten y su asistente el P. Willinger se reunieron para colocar la piedra angular de la iglesia de St Philip. When the school building was finished I went to St. Philip's from second grade until eighth grade graduation in 1946. I remember that day so well, the last week of May. The day and night previous to graduation, eight inches of very heavy wet snow fell on the city. My parents had a truck garden and fruit orchard of apple, pear and plum trees. The fruit blossoms had already come out, and most of them were destroyed so we had no fruit crop that summer.

Cuando se terminó la construcción de la escuela, fui a San Felipe desde segundo grado hasta la graduación de octavo grado en 1946. Recuerdo ese día tan bien, la última semana de mayo. El día y la noche anterior a la graduación, ocho pulgadas de nieve muy pesada cayó sobre la ciudad. Mis padres tenían un huerto y vendieron frutales de manzana, peras y ciruelos. Las flores de fruta ya habían salido, y la mayoría de ellos fueron destruidos; no tuvimos ningún cultivo de fruta ese verano.

As a youngster, I really enjoyed singing in St. Philip's choir. The organist and director was Sister Ann, a wonderful person and excellent teacher. As all young boys, I lost my voice and was asked to leave the choir. Disappointed as I was, I nevertheless found a new niche up on the altar as an acolyte! At the time, I didn't realize how this good fortune would help me serving as an acolyte in churches of the many countries that I eventually lived in abroad.

Como joven, me gustó mucho cantar en el coro de San Felipe. El organista y director era la Hermana Ann, una maravillosa persona y excelente maestro. Igual como todos los muchachos jóvenes, perdí mi voz y tuve que salir del coro. Decepcionada como estaba, sin embargo encontré un nuevo nicho en el altar como monaguillo. En aquel tiempo no me di cuenta cómo esta buena fortuna me ayudaría a servir como monaguillo en las iglesias de muchos países donde vivía después en el extranjero.

I played on the St. Philip football team and really enjoyed being a member of the parish Boy Scout Troop102. The leaders of both groups were essential in providing us valuable guidance for our future years.

Participé en fútbol en la escuela y me gustó mucho ser miembro del Boy ScoutTroop-102 de la parroquia. Los líderes de ambos grupos eran esenciales y muy valiosos para orientar nuestros años futuros.

In spite of living abroad in eleven countries during my years in service and as a member of the U.S. Foreign Service, my wife Mary and I managed to celebrate our 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries in good old St. Philip's!

A pesar de vivir en el extranjero en once países durante mis años de servicio militar y como miembro del Servicio Exterior de Estados Unidos, mi esposa Mary y yo hemos podido celebrar nuestros 25 y 50 aniversarios de Matrimonio en San Felipe!

It has been a good life, and thanks be to God, still is! ¡La vida ha sido buena, y gracias a Dios, todavía es!

Fr. Bill’s Installation as Pastor

La Instalación del P. Bill como Párroco

- por Lynn Corroy El sábado, 3 de diciembre de 2016 en la Misa de 4:00 el P. William A. Hoffman fue instalado oficialmente como Párroco de la Parroquia de San Felipe el Apóstol. El Obispo David L. Ricken presidió en la Misa con el Padre Bill. La instalación oficial incluyó la Profesión de Fe y el Juramento de Fidelidad a la Iglesia Católica afirmados verbalmente y firmados por el Padre Bill. Muchos feligreses estuvieron presentes y se unieron al Obispo Ricken y a P. Bill para una recepción donde muchos trajeron alimentos para compartir en la Sala Verbeten después de la Misa. Gracias a Gwen y Kevin Peot, Jean Dix y Joy Peterson por la hermosa música durante la Misa. Esther Gómez y su equipo prepararon una deliciosa comida de fajitas de res y pollo, arroz, frijoles y un pastel de felicitación. Otros feligreses contribuyeron sus propios platillos especiales al buffet. ¡Música de Ramiro “La Voz de Guanajuato” cerró la noche con broche de oro!

On Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the 4:00 p.m. Mass Fr. William A. Hoffman was officially installed as Pastor of St. Philip the Apostle Parish. Bishop David L. Ricken presided at the Mass with Fr. Bill, concelebrant. The official installation included a verbal affirmation and a signed document of the Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity by Fr. Bill to the Catholic Church. Many parishioners were in attendance and joined Bishop Ricken and Fr. Bill for a pot luck reception in Verbeten Hall after the Mass. Thanks to Gwen and Kevin Peot, Jean Dix and Joy Peterson for the beautiful music at the Mass. Esther Gomez and her crew prepared a delicious meal consisting of beef and chicken fajitas, rice, beans and a congratulatory cake. Other parishioners added to the buffet by contributing their own pot luck specialties. Music by Ramiro, “The Voice of Guanajuato” made the night complete!

Christmas at Riverside

Navidad en Riversidez

Our annual parish winter fundraiser, Christmas at Riverside, was held on Tuesday, December 6 at Riverside Ballroom. 259 guests were in attendance and experienced a night of holiday magic. A social hour preceded a tasty family- style chicken dinner with all the trimmings, which included those famous knee-caps for dessert! Many businesses and parishioners donated cash prizes, gift cards and items for Silent Auction/Bucket Raffle baskets. A special guest was coerced into singing a few holiday favorites - who knew Fr. Bill was such a crooner?! Parishioners were also eager to participate in the 50/50 and cash raffles. Join us next December for another night of fun at Christmas at Riverside 2017!

Nuestro evento anual para recaudar fondos en invierno, Navidad en Riverside, se llevó a cabo el martes, 6 de diciembre en Riverside Ballroom. 259 invitados asistieron y vivieron una noche navideña mágica. ¡Una hora social precedió una cena estilo familiar de pollo con todos los acompañamientos, que incluyó los famosos knee-caps para el postre! Un invitado especial fue forzado a cantar canciones navideñas populares - ¡¿Quién diría que el Padre Bill era tan buen cantante?!
