Power From the Pit Article by Dave Laber, Senior VP of Sales, Sports Insurance Specialists (SIS) There’s more than one “pit” in racing. Traditional pit crews, obviously, are the epitome of the well-oiled human machine that keeps drivers and their vehicles in top form at top speed. It’s that rhythmic, in-sync system that fascinates and facilitates the art of racing on nearly every level. Most of us think about big tracks, big events, and big crews; but even the mom-and-pop tracks with local events and drivers without the hyped behindthe-scenes operations have powerful support

systems keeping everyone’s eyes on the prize. Pit crews are definitely the lifeblood of motorsports — it’s the “power from the pit.” The other “pit” is pure adrenaline power. It’s the feeling that comes from the pit of our stomachs but definitely has the power to push us from zero to 100 in seconds. Everyone — drivers, crews, their families, spectators, track owners, sanctioning bodies — they all feel it. It’s the other “power from the pit.” I’ve been insuring motorsports for nearly 30 years, at every level of racing. I’ve been in, and seen, a lot of races — and made a lot

SF4 8860-2018 (Non-ABP) — The Latest Helmet From SCHUBERTH! Complying with the highest FIA specification, the new SF4 Carbon 8860-2018 NonABP helmet is the latest masterpiece from SCHUBERTH. Manufactured in their own factory in Italy, the SF4 is crafted by the same hands that make the SF3 helmets used by F1 champion Max Verstappen among others. Produced to the highest quality standards, the SF4 uses an exclusive, autoclave-cured, T1000 carbon fiber shell. Developed to optimize fitment and comfort, interchangeable cheek and crown pads allow each helmet to be individually adjusted to different head shapes. Communication systems are seamlessly integrated into the SF4 using proven techniques, such as cable ducts in the cheek pads and recessed indents that provide a comfortable spot for ears. A large variety of electronic kits are available, such as earbuds, noise reduction earcups with speakers, and dual kits that incorporate both options. The advancements don’t stop on the exterior either. Unlike other helmets on the market, SCHUBERTH uses 3D Injection molded visors to create distortion-free clarity. Taking it one step further, each SF4 utilizes a Pinlock® 120 lens, adding mechanical anti-fog to each visor for optimal performance in any condition. Topping off the visor is a two-stage lock derived from F1, the first stage allowing a small amount of air flow while still securely locking the shield. The second stage creates a firm

consistent testing were factors paramount to success. Consequently, these areas were given top priority and a quality control team was assembled to begin the arduous task of research and development. At the same time, a search for the most qualified manufacturing facilities was also initiated. Only properly certified factories with the most advanced equipment and modern metal fabrication technology would do. With these requirements in mind, a select group of manufacturing partners were chosen, and the production team was put into place. The doors were opened in the summer of 2004 and the first orders were shipped.

Using Laser Rust Removal to Bring Car Parts Back to Life Laser rust removal is a process that can be used to clean unwanted residue from metal parts with less risk than other methods. When conducted successfully, the laser ablation process is used to remove a layer of rust or other contaminants without damaging the substrate material. And this is commonly done with a fiber laser system. Not only does laser rust removal improve the appearance of an item, it also extends its life, which allows manufacturers to build a more reliable product. Because of this, using laser rust removal to bring car parts back to life is a terrific strategy that allows entrepreneurs to operate sustainable businesses for a fraction of the cost.

ects require a wired brush and a grinding wheel to remove unwanted rust and paint, using a laser rust removal system can provide an effective alternative. Not only does laser rust removal cut down on the manual labor that’s associated with removing rust, it also keeps more of the part intact than a wire and/or grinding wheel. And it even reduces the amount of time that’s required to complete each part, which makes it a good process for industrial applications. Rust removal can also be achieved by the application of chemical components or electricity. But laser rust removal stands out in its ability to accomplish each task quickly, and with minimal distortion.

The Laser Rust Removal Process During the laser rust removal process, laser pulses are applied on the surface of a material to expel contaminants, leaving the substrate material clean and free of damage. Every material has an ablation threshold, which means that it has a heat at which chemical bonds are broken. When this is applied to cleaning or rust removal, laser operators essentially use vaporization to remove unwanted residue from a material’s surface. While using a laser to clean or remove a certain compound from a material, it is possible to selectively target one material, leaving the second surface undamaged. Using a strong and weaker power burst can help you to remove rust even faster.

Benefits of Using the Laser Rust Removal Process Using lasers to remove rust from a material is beneficial for a number of reasons. It’s a green technology, which means that it requires fewer consumables, and it doesn’t use harmful chemicals. The laser systems, themselves, require less maintenance, which makes them built for longevity. And, finally, laser rust removal systems are much safer than competitive rust removal processes when they’re paired with a dust extraction system, because those who are operating the laser don’t have to touch any substances or chemicals on their product. Here at Laser Marking Technologies, clients have access to a full range of laser types and functions. Get in touch today at Booth #5434 to explore the laser rust removal process if you’re hoping to find a sustainable and effective way to restore old parts.

What Is Dry Ice Blasting? Dry ice blasting is a process where dry ice (solid CO2) pellets are accelerated in a pressurized air stream to clean or prepare a surface. Through sublimation, where CO2 instantly changes from a solid to a gas, the pellets create mini explosions upon impact to effectively clean nearly any surface. Since it leaves behind no residue, dry ice blasting has become one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly methods to clean in an industrial or domestic environment. Dry ice is nonconductive, chemically inert, nonpoisonous, and nonflammable. It has the ability to clean a wide variety of surfaces, including production equipment, food processing equipment, printing presses, walls, windows, monuments, and more. Dry ice can even be used on sensitive surfaces, such as electrical equipment and outdoor sculptures, without causing damage. An environmentally friendly cleaning process, it does not use any harmful chemicals and therefore does not generate any secondary waste. In a production environment, it is the ideal clean-in-place (CIP) cleaning solution that allows the cleaning of machinery without time-consuming disassembly. Solid CO2 pellets, also known as “blasting rice,” are readily available through dedicated dry ice distributors and at many industrial gas distributors. Besides the pellets, dry ice blasting also requires an air compressor that’s capable of supplying at least 100 psi/85 Cfm+ (2.4 cubic meters) of air. For best performance, the air should also be cool and dry. An aftercooler, such as Command Air® 500, is highly recommended for supplying cool, dry, and filtered air for dry ice blasting.

85 Cfm of air at 100 psi, which must be supplied by a commercial-grade or industrial air compressor (air requirements vary based on model). Most shop air compressors are sufficient as long as they meet this requirement and have at least a 1-inch air supply line, although the Commando® XP model may operate with air lines as small as half an inch. In addition to the air compressor, dry ice blasting also requires cool, dry air for the best performance. An aftercooler, such as the portable Command Air® 500, is highly recommended, especially in humid conditions or any environment where the air supplied by the compressor may contain moisture and does not have an integrated moisture filter.

What Equipment Is Required For Dry Ice Blasting? Dry ice blasting requires a minimum of

American-Made Dry Ice Blasting Innovation Nu-Ice Age, Inc. is a veteran-owned company based in Jackson, Michigan, founded in 2007. After extensive research, design, and testing, they have developed a line of highperformance dry ice blasting machines for an environmentally friendly cleaning solution. The Commando line of dry ice blasters is ideal for a wide variety of applications, and dry ice is the preferred cleaning method for food processing equipment, welding cells, fire restoration, historical restoration, power generation equipment, and more. Using only standard dry ice pellets, Commando Dry Ice Blasters easily remove production residue, grease, oils, tar, mold, and other materials. ibility, durability, and performance under the most challenging environmental conditions in engine/oil/CAC cooling; electronics and battery cooling; HVAC; and other settings. When it comes to versatility, performance, and quality, SPAL is second to none. All SPAL SBL fans feature motors sealed to IP68 and IP6K9K standards (waterproof/dustproof and waterjet capable); integrated power and signal electronics; “soft start” technology (eliminates electrical in-rush spike); digital control for smooth and reliable operation; temperature sensor options for full variable speed control; reduced axial dimensions; low weight; and high efficiency. SPAL SBL motors also feature patented “Sine Wave Technologies,” resulting in quieter and smoother running motors that, in turn, reduce NVH and “felt vibration” levels in electric vehicles. Additionally, the brush-

less motor design also reduces the number of wear components versus standard brushed technology to deliver extremely long-lasting life. All SPAL SBL motors are rated to operate in high-temperature conditions — higher than typical DC motors on the market today. To safeguard itself and prevent premature motor failure, SPAL SBL motors have a number of protective features to detect problematic situations. To avoid damage to the motor it provides automatic power de-rating in severe overtemperature operating conditions that allow the fan to run at lower speeds rather than cause permanent motor failure. It also checks for over- and under-voltage and locked rotor conditions to prevent catastrophic failures to the fan motor. SPAL SBL technology is specifically designed for applications where airflow performance, low power consumption,

automatic speed control, long motor life, and high efficiency are key requirements. Being a vertically integrated company, our product design; tooling; performance and validation testing; automated motor manufacturing; injection molding; robotic product assembly; electronic PCBs for brushless motors; and 100% online testing of all products are done entirely in-house. It guarantees the quality and performance level of every step in the design and manufacturing process to ensure the well-known “SPAL Quality Standard” that has distinguished SPAL products in the marketplace for over 60 years.
