We are yet to play Stansfeld this season but a quick look at the league table shows how well they have started their first ever season at this level so they are certain to be a tough test today. We are on a good run in the league ourselves but would like our day in the sun and this Competition could provide it and it is one we want to win. Last week we picked up another vital 3 points with a comfortable win against Lordswood. It was particularly pleasing to see our longest-standing players both get on the score sheet with Lewis Clark heading home early on and Lee Bird turning into Maradona to put us 2-0 up in stunning style. Enjoy today and Come On You Phoenix! Good afternoon and welcome to The Mayplace Ground for our Kent FA Senior Trophy game against Stansfeld. We hope our visitors and their connections have arrived safely and enjoy the facilities on offer. It's another home game for us, the 5th in a row - but the Mayplace is one our opponents know well too, with their u23 side also calling it home for their midweek games in the SCEFL Development League. FROM THE BOARDROOM ANDREW MORTLOCK Morty

FROM THE DUGOUT STEVE O'BOYLE Today we turn our attention to the Kent Senior Trophy, against an in-form team, who are having a fantastic first season in the Premier. Today is going to be a really tough game and I’m expecting it to be a really tight affair. I would like to give a special mention to our mascot today, ten-year old Grayson Morgan, whose dad is a former Phoenix player that won the Kent Invicta League with us in our first season. Grayson is a remarkable boy and his favourite player is our captain, Ryan Hayes. I’m hoping he brings us some good luck today and we can get a win for him and our supporters. I hope everyone enjoys the game today! Boyley Good afternoon and welcome to Phoenix Sports for today's Kent Senior Trophy game versus Stansfeld FC. Last week we beat Lordswood at home 3-0 and climbed up to fifth place in the table. It was nice to keep a clean sheet, although we weren’t at our best, but if I’m honest, results are more important than performances at this stage of the season.

WE MAKE BUILDINGS WORK

THERE would have been a lot of smiling faces at Boreham Wood on Monday night when Sorba Thomas came off the Wales bench to make his World Cup debut. It's the latest chapter in a remarkable rise for the former National League attacker, who is now starring in the Championship for Huddersfield Town. It wasn't all that long ago the 23-year-old was one of Wood's most important players having come through their academy - he regularly returns to give talks to the next generation of hopeful young footballers. "I genuinely think there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence," Garrard told me last week. "If you're an elite athlete you've got to walk along that line. Sorba does that. He has the confidence in his ability and the arrogance to deliver on it. You see that in his game. That's why he's got his call-up for Wales. "He's got Premier League pace. We've always spoken about that. And he's added to his game, hugely. With us he was always developing. We got him on the coaching side of things so his off-the-field stuff - the tough conversations dropping players in the U19s, people knocking on his door because they're not playing on a Wednesday, these are things he grew off the pitch which definitely helped him grow on the pitch. "I went and watched him in the play-off final last year. I was sat with his friends and family. I don't think I've been as nervous as that for a game I've been involved in, let alone someone else. Because it was like watching someone you've brought up. Now he's going to the World Cup." He's not the only former Boreham Wood youngster out in Qatar. Sheffield United's Iliman Ndiaye is in the Senegal squad and his rise also has Garrard beaming. "We went to the PGMOL tournament three years ago where they were using VAR prior to rolling it out, and he scored a goal like Maradona," Garrard says. "We knew he had a special talent. Obviously he's gone off to Sheffield United and he's with Senegal now. "It's very similar routes (to Sorba). We were fortunate he landed on our lap but the minute he came in it was, 'No, no - this one is special'." Of course there are plenty of other former Non-League players at this World Cup. Thomas' team-mate Kieffer Moore turned the game in Wales' favour when he came off the bench. The striker, now in the Premier League, played for Truro City and Dorchester Town before other spells at Forest Green and Torquay United on loan. He also represented England C in an International Challenge Trophy game against Estonia. There are players in the Wales squad who have played Non-League like Joe Morrell (Sutton and Margate) and Town Lockyer, who won promotion with Bristol Rovers. In the full England squad, Nick Pope began at Isthmian League Bury Town. Jordan Pickford had loan spells at Alfreton Town and Darlington, while Callum Wilson turned out for Tamworth and Kettering Town. Ghana striker Antoine Semenyo played on loan for Bath City in 2018. In recent years we've seen many more examples of players learning their trade in Non-League and landing on world football's biggest stages. There is more than one route to the top. As Garrard adds: "Iliman was at Marseille as a kid, didn't really make it, and was trying to find somewhere to go before he came to us. Sorba was released by West Ham. There are success stories."

fans cannot and do not feel welcome, and where hundreds or thousands of migrant workers are believed to have died in the construction of the stadia, it’s hosting of the World Cup is a stain on the game. But it is far from the first time that the competition has not lived up to the liberal image football likes to portray. In 1934, Mussolini believed the World Cup could unite and advertise his fascist Italy on the global stage. Even in 1966, England’s sole victory, took place in a country where homosexuality was still illegal. But perhaps none of the controversial editions come close to 1978, where the Argentinian junta so brazenly, so blatantly, hosted the World Cup to prop up their own hated regime. It is difficult to pin down exactly to whom FIFA awarded the World Cup in 1978. The country, obviously, was Argentina, but the decision was made in 1966. The bid to host the competition was made under the Presidency of Arturo Umberto Illia, the third centre-left President in a row, representing something like a stable democracy. But, eight days before the decision was made, a coup d’etat removed Illia from office, replacing him with a military junta, who technically received the competition. Argentinian politics being as unstable as they were in the sixties and seventies, various other coups, before the return of popular Juan Peron and then his wife Isabel (not Evita) and, eventually, another junta, which was in place when the tournament started in 1978. They had been in power for just two years, with a brutal crackdown on dissent, the removal of political liberties, and the disappearance of 30,000 people. Still, FIFA did what they do best, and concentrated on the football. The competition itself started relatively innocuously. England, Wales and Northern Ireland failed to qualify, meaning British hopes (or, at least, interests) were pinned on Scotland, who struggled to live up to their pre-tournament optimism. 1974 finalists West Germany and the Netherlands made it through, however, as did the hosts and their arch-rivals Brazil. Joining them was Peru, which wasn’t especially noteworthy at the time, but by the end of the tournament would be one of the biggest talking points in football. The second group stage saw Argentina drawn with Brazil, Poland and Peru. After seeing off Poland, they drew with their South American rivals and would need a strong win in their final group game to qualify. Argentina started their game suspiciously late and knew that they needed a four goal victory to qualify. Peru had enjoyed a strong start to the competition but waned in the second group stage, losing 3-0 to Brazil. But such a heavy defeat seemed out of the question, and Brazil prepared to move into the final. They had reckoned without the junta. Both Argentina and Peru have always denied any kind of arrangement. But Peru’s players have admitted to a pre-match visit from the Argentina President and Henry Kissinger (The United States supported the junta, and Kissinger was a master of inflaming and easing political tensions to aid his political ambitions). Only one player, Peruvian defensive midfielder and Ballon d’Or nominee Jose Velasquez, has ever claimed wrongdoing in the match. With the benefit of this hindsight, Mario Kempes ran through a suspiciously open defence in the 21st minute to open the scoring. Rodolfo Manzo was accused to throwing the game to secure a transfer to Velez, and he left the gap. Early in the second half, he lost Kempes from a free-kick and the Argentine got his and the team’s second. Suspicious, but not necessarily damning. But two goals would not be enough, and time was running out. Suspicious again, then, when in the 51st minute Peru’s best player, and the only one to have accused his teammates of corruption, was taken off. He was replaced by Raul Gorriti, who hadn’t played a minute of the competition up to this point. The goals flowed then. A third. A fourth. A fifth. And a sixth. Argentina qualified for the final ahead of Brazil, where they would meet the Total Football of the Netherlands. In an overly physical game, Argentina forced extra time, and Kempes and Daniel Bertoni won it for the hosts. But it was the Peru game that was remembered, and the questions marks still remain. A Peruvian senator has admitted that his nation threw the game, and Velasquez has accused some of his teammates, but there has never been any proof. The corruption always takes place behind closed doors, and it’s always the football that suffers. Enjoy the game. THE UNTOLD GAME Controversy and Corruption atthe World Cup

PHOENIX SPORTS CLUB Formed in 1935, Phoenix Sports Club originally started out as St. Johns Welling, later changing its name to Lakeside, before renaming to Phoenix following the Second World War as it was seen to rise from the ashes of the previous two clubs amidst the destruction caused by the blitz. Over the years the club has played at various locations in the local area, including Danson Park until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. Over time it evolved into the ground that we all know now as The Club. Both football and cricket have been played at Mayplace Road East, with many members, both past and present, representing the club in both sports. However, with the growth of junior football, cricket has now moved away from the club. After entering various leagues, including the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County League Division One West. In the 1986/7 season, the club entered the Spartan League and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League - Division One - West, winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94. In 1999/2000 we won the league, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations ended up in Division Two West, finally returning to the first division in 2004/05, and then back to the Premier Division in 2007/08. After three seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System (Step 10 of the English Football League System) – the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out to Bly Spartans. Unfortunately, the First team and Reserve Team Management both resigned for personal reasons at the end of season 2011-2012. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint First Team Managers and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry. Off the pitch we installed floodlights and a 108 seat stand and with further improvements around the ground we soon received an F Grade. After a successful first campaign under the new management structure, and after losing only two league games all season, Phoenix won the Kent Invicta League and gained promotion to the Kent League (now renamed the Southern Counties East Football League) to play at step 5 of the National League System. We finished in sixth place in our inaugural season but had aims to do even better the next year. We had a very good start to the campaign but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup - losing on penalties after a replay. We then began an unbelievable run in both the League and FA Vase. The Vase journey was fantastic culminating in us reaching the 4th Round Proper, where we lost to the eventual winners North Shields. In the League we managed to lose only 1 game all season and accumulated 30 clean sheets. Due to these great performances we managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments along the way. We then needed to work miracles off the pitch, but we eventually managed to get all of the necessary works done in time to gain a D Grade and promotion to Isthmian League North Division. Our first season at this level saw us finish in 14th place, which was improved upon the next year when we came 8th. We were then the subject of a lateral movement and competed in the newly sponsored Bostik League South, for the 2017-18 season. After a decent start and sitting in the play-off spots for a while, we were rocked by the departure of First Team Manager Steve O’Boyle. Paul Bryon came in and steadied the ship and we finished in a creditable 11th place. The following year we improved to a pleasing 9th position. The early ends to the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, prevented us from again gaining top half finishes before a disappointing 2021/22 campaign saw us finish second bottom and get relegated down to SCEFL league. We go into the 2022/23 season with Steve O'Boyle back in the dugout now, leading a side hungry for a quick return to Step 4. Phoenix Sports are a FA charter Standard Community Club - the highest level of youth recognition from the Football Association. Mini-soccer is played at the Mayplace Ground and Sundays are always busy with parents cheering on the young players wearing our green shirt. ourhistory

Stansfeld, Oxford and Bermondsey Club formed in 1897, when Dr. John Stansfeld an Oxford graduate visited Bermondsey and seeing the poverty decided to form the Club to keep the waifs and strays off the streets. At one time the organisation ran five Clubs in the Docklands, Southwark and Bermondsey areas, when the population was far greater than it is today. Thankfully the need is not as great today. The Club's headquarters are now to be found in Webb Street, Bermondsey, where over 200 members enjoy various sections, i.e. football, golf, snooker, athletics, circuit training and drinking. Currently the club fields four football teams on a Saturday, one in the SCEFL First Division and two in the Kent County League and a Vets team in the Southern Veterans Football League; as well as two youth sides in the Kent Youth League on a Sunday. In 1958 Stansfeld joined Division Two of the Western Section of the Kent County League and went on to win the division at the first attempt, as well as the Division Two Challenge Cup. The club were promoted into the Premier Division, skipping Division One. They were Premier Division runners-up and won the Premier Division Cup in 1961–62. They went on to win back-to-back Premier Division titles in 1962–63 and 1963–64 before being promoted to the Senior Division, in which they were runners-up in 1964–65. Stansfeld finished as Senior Division runners-up again in 1969–70, but were later relegated to the Premier Division, which they won for a third time in 1977–78. They were Senior Division runners-up in 1980–81 before winning the division in 1984–85. They were league champions again in 1986–87 and then won back-to-back titles in 1988–89 and 1989–90, before finishing as runners-up in 1990–91. When the league was reorganised in 1992 the club were placed in the Premier Division. Stansfeld were Premier Division champions in 1994–95 and runners-up in 2002–03. Despite finishing fourth in 2006–07 the club were relegated to Division One West. However, they were runners-up in the division in 2007–08, earning an immediate promotion back to the Premier Division. The club won the Premier Division for a second time in 2009–10 and subsequently finished as runners-up in 2011–12 and 2014–15. In July 2016 Stansfeld took over Southern Counties East League Division One club Eltham Palace. The team continued playing under the Eltham Palace name until the end of the 2016–17 season, when they adopted the present name of Stansfeld. In the 2016-17 Season Stansfeld finished in 15th place before improving to 13th for the 2017-18 Campaign. Another improvement occurred in 2018-19 as the side finished 8th while in 2019/20 we were joint 4th when the Coronovirus Pandemic came along and ended football for the season. Covid again cut short the 2020/21 campaign; however, it was a record year for the club as they entered the FA Cup for the first time in their history and making it into the Second Round (Proper) of the FA Vase. The 2021/22 campaign was a successful one; becoming SCEFL First Division Champions. And also getting to the last 16 of the FA Vase, where we knocked out on penalties. For 2022/23, it will be our first season at Step 5 and a second outing in the FA Cup. Our Opponents History STANSFELD
