RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (RGNIYD)



The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is an Institute of National Importance established by an Act No.35/2012 of the Parliament of India, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It functions as a vital resource centre by offering academic programmes, viz., Under Graduate, Post Graduate, Ph.D., and Diploma programmes, encompassing various dimensions of youth development, engaging in seminal research in the vital areas of youth development and conducting training programmes catering to the needs of youth across the country. RGNIYD has close cooperation with various state agencies, NSS, NYKS, and empanelled organizations in the implementation of training programmes. Being an apex body for youth development, the RGNIYD strives to develop into a globally recognised and acclaimed centre of academic excellence in the field of youth development, fully responsive to the national agenda for inclusive growth, and the needs and aspirations of young people of the country to realise their potentials to create a just society.

Greetings from RGNIYD. The Department of Sociology was introduced in the year 2021 at the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD)in addition to the various academic programmes taking into consideration the huge potential of the discipline. Over a short span of its establishment at RGNIYD, the Department continues to be one of the most vibrant Departments with its robust faculty and students engaging in academics and beyond having organized many extension programmes across a variety of thematic domains for the students, youth, academicians, development workers, and the community. I am delighted that the first batch of M.A Sociology students is graduating from RGNIYD.A sociological understanding of the myriad problems and challenges facing the society is the need of the hour in every sector especially in these changing times, and I am positive that the learning, skills and experience gained by the students at RGNIYD will definitely add value to any institution they work. I have every confidence that they will set great examples in leadership, team work, research, development practice, community work, and as role models carrying out their responsibilities with honesty and integrity, and they are fully prepared to go out and contribute to their communities and the society at large. I am sure they will bring many laurels to the institute through their dedication, hard work and exemplary service. MESSAGE FROM THE PLACEMENT COORDINATOR

Rajiv Gandhi national institute of youth development is the only institute at national level working for youth development in India. The institute was established in 1993 in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu under the ministry of youth affairs and sports, government of India. From the inception, it has been handling various issues related to youth, involving in policy making, intervening in various aspects and creating awareness among the youth across the country with an aim to train them as productive workforce towards nation building. Students from nearly 20 states study in our campus. Those students have been trained in their master’s degree programs for two years on various aspects related to contemporary approaches and current issues so that they will be able to work for the benefit of the various categories of people. The teaching learning pedagogy includes classroom teaching in an innovative way, a practical learning in collaboration with development organisations, internship with reputed national organizations have been conducted in the process of capacitating the students. Apart from their curricula, they were engaged in many extra and co-curricular activities within and outside the institute. Some of them have also participated in various youth exchange programs outside the country (Russia, China, Sri Lanka, Nepal). They are all well equipped with required competencies and needful skills to work with governmental, non-governmental, corporate organizations, CSR Projects, Social Incubators and social enterprises. I am delighted to introduce the young professionals and social innovators of RGNIYD. On this happiest occasion, I wish to invite you to our campus and recruit our talented students for your esteemed organizations.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT Greetings! The Department of Sociology was established in September 2021 at RGNIYD with the prime objective to introduce academic excellence, research and training in sociology and this is the first placement drive for the first batch of students (M.A Sociology, 2021 – 2023) after its inception. The M.A Sociology curriculum at RGNIYD is well designed with a unique combination of theory, sociological issues, fieldwork component and Internship which will equip the students with rich theoretical vigour and experiential learning from the field. The Department with its highly motivated faculty is enthusiastic and proud to be playing a small role in imparting sociological education catering to a diverse group of students hailing from different socioeconomic and academic backgrounds. Through the course of this academic journey, students were provided a platform to hone their leadership skills and exposure to various academic deliberations outside the classroom through special lectures, seminars, workshops, training programmes, co-curricular activities, etc which were regularly organized by the Department and the Institute. Each of our students is driven by passion in the subject, full of creativity and dedication, and I am confident that they are now well-equipped and ready to take on the world. They will be an asset to any institute and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

PROFILES OF THE FACULTIES

DR. SHARMISTHA BHATTACHARJEE Dr. Sharmistha is an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Sociology. She holds a Doctorate in Sociology from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, West Bengal. She also holds an MPhil degree from Delhi School of Economics and is a post graduate in Sociology from Jamia Millia Islamia securing First Rank. She has completed her B.A (Hons) in Sociology from University of Delhi. She has worked as an Academic Associate with Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad and has a teaching experience of over 15 years in various reputed institutions in India in post graduate and undergraduate level. She has published research papers in edited books published by Cambridge and Macmillan; she is an author of two books and has published a number of papers in reputed international journals. A few of them include Journal of Developing Societies &, Global Business Review (Sage Publications) and Pertanika Journal of Social Sciences & Humanities (JSSH) University Putra Malaysia Press (Indexed in Scopus). She has coordinated a number of academic as well as training programmes inside and outside the institute.

DR. HIRANNIYA KALESH P Dr. Kalesh holds a Ph.D. in Rural Sociology from University of Kerala with Master of Studies (Sociology) from same University; was on the Faculty of IGNOU ( Trivandrum study center), Mahatma Gandhi College, University of Kerala; published research papers and articles in national journals and books; conducted several research studies like Knowledge Attitude and Practice of Panchayati Raj among Youth India covering 10 states, coordinated the establishment of 21 youth resource centers across the country and studies related to status of youth in backward districts of India.

MS. AVINU VERONICA RICHA Ms. Veronica holds a Master’s degree in Anthropology (Social) from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and cleared UGC-NET in Anthropology. She secured the First Rank (Gold Medallist) in her UG Gen Anthropology from Kohima Science College, Kohima. She worked as a Field Investigator for the project, “Cultural History, Ethnography & Physical Characteristics of Nagas of Nagaland”, a joint project undertaken by the Directorate of Art and Culture, Govt of Nagaland and the Anthropological Society of Nagaland, and also served as Project Coordinator for the projects, “Promoting Environmental Education through the Ethical Value of Conservation”, and “Women Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods through the use of Eco-friendly Technology” at C-CERP, Dimapur, Nagaland. Her areas of interest are Customary Law, Feminist Research Methodology, Gender Planning, Social Entrepreneurship, Youth Development and Tribal Studies. She enjoys gardening, cooking and music.

DR. ANBU KAVITHA Dr. Kavitha holds M.A., M.Phil., PhD in Sociology. She is currently working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Sociology, RGNIYD. Her areas of interest include Development Communication, Social exclusion and Inclusion, Sociology of Development and Sociology of Youth. She started her career in Teaching P.G.in Dept of Sociology, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu from the year 2006 and experiences in Training, Research and Extension activities. She has published research articles in National and International Journals and Edited volumes. She has organised many Training of trainers programmes for college and University teachers on various topics, Coordinated and organised Empanelled Training Institution-Training for Newly recruited NSS programme officers, Capacity Building workshops for NSS Programme Officers, NYKS Officials and National Integration camps for NSS and NYKS Volunteers and Capacity building programme for Women Managers, Academic writing workshops for Research Scholars and served as resource person and Master trainer.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

The Department of Sociology at the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) was established in the year 2021 with the prime objective to introduce a dedicated department towards academic excellence, research and training in sociology. Since its inception, the Department offers a two-year master’s degree programme in M.A Sociology. The course is a distinctive and rigorous programme comprising of theoretical and experiential learning through classroom teaching, innovation assignments, case analysis, internship, field work, and dissertation project. Additionally, students are provided a wide exposure to various training programmes, workshops, Conferences to hone their skills and competencies. The mission of the Department of Sociology is to promote scientific understanding of social life through teaching, scholarship, and service. By providing rigorous training in disciplinary theories and methods coupled with a diversity of educational and field experiences to enhance the development of robust sociological imaginations and critical thinking among students.

FIELDWORK & INTERNSHIP ORGANIZATIONS

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Companies/Organizations that wish to participate in the recruitment RGNIYD are required to indicate the job profile, preferred skill set and approximate Cost to Company/Organization by dropping a mail to [email protected] or by filling the company registration form. Based on this information, the schedule for the placement drive is fixed by the placement cell in consultation with the company. The students are informed about the company and the job profile. The interested students register for the placement drive.

ON CAMPUS

The drive is conducted as scheduled. Companies/organizations can choose to give a pre-placement presentation. The entire procedure for recruitment (GD, aptitude test, PI etc.) is left to the company’s choice. All facilities and logistics for the recruitment will be arranged by the placement cell.

OFF CAMPUS

Companies/organizations which are unable to visit the Campus are provided with the updated CV/Resumes of the registered students. The company/organization can shortlist the students and can conduct the online interview which would be facilitated by the placement cell. Post recruitment process the recruiting company is required to announce and intimate the institutes' placement cell about the final list of selected candidates.
