Localización Location

Cantabria es una comunidad autónoma uniprovincial situada en el centro geográfico de la Cornisa Cantábrica, formando parte del Arco Atlántico Europeo. Limita al este con el País Vasco, al oeste con Asturias y al sur con Castilla y León, tiene una extensión de 5.321 km2, equivalentes al 1,05% de total nacional y al 0,13% de la Unión Europea. Cantabria is a single autonomous region located in the geographic centre of the Cantabrian coast, forming part of the European Atlantic Arc. It is bordered by the Basque Country to the east, Asturias to the west and Castile and Leon to the south, has an area of 5,321 km2, equivalent to 1.05% of the national and 0.13% of the European Union.

La densidad de población se sitúa próxima a los 110 habitantes por km2, cifra sensiblemente superior a la media nacional, aunque por debajo de la comunitaria. Aún así, la fuerte concentración demográfica en la franca costera, por la especial orografía de la zona interior, hace que la densidad media sea escasamente representativa. The population density is approximately 110 inhabitants per km2, significantly higher than the national average, although below that of the EU. However, for geographical reasons the population is concentrated along the coast, meaning that the average density is not truly representative.

La población cántabra ha aumentado en diez años en más de 50.000 personas gracias a la capacidad de atracción de la región y a la importante entrada de extranjeros. The population of Cantabria has increased within the last ten years by more than 50,000 people. This is due to the attractiveness of the region and a significant level of immigration.

Su pirámide poblacional, típica de los países desarrollados, con baja tasa de natalidad y elevada longevidad, sobre todo de las mujeres, refleja que el 12,44% de la población tiene menos de 15 años, mientras los mayores de 65 años alcanzan el 18,43%. The population pyramid of the region is typical of that of a developed country, with a low birth rate and high longevity, especially for women. Current figures show that 12.44% of the population is less than 15 years of age, while over 65s represent 18.43% of the total population.

La natalidad se ha recuperado en los últimos años como consecuencia de la llegada de inmigrantes y de las políticas de apoyo a las familias implementadas por las distintas Administraciones Públicas. The birth rate has increased in recent years thanks to the incorporation of immigrants and the political support given to families implemented by different government departments.

La esperanza de vida, por encima de la media nacional y de Europa, muestra a los cántabros, y sobre todo a las mujeres, como los más longevos de su entorno, muy cerca del máximo de Japón (85,2 años para las mujeres). Life expectancy in Cantabria is above the national and European average, particularly for women, whose life expectancy is close to the Japanese maximum of 85.2 years.

La estructura productiva de Cantabria, característica de una economía desarrollada, muestra una diversificación superior al conjunto de la Unión Europea con un mayor peso del sector de la construcción y menor preponderacia de los servicios. The production structure of Cantabria, characteristic of a developed economy, shows greater diversity than the European average with an emphasis on the construction sector and a lower bias towards the service industry.

El valor de las ventas de productos industriales, que fue en 2007 de casi 6.000 millones de euros, se concentra en las siguientes ramas productivas: • Producción, primera transformación y fundición de metales, con un 19,5% del total. • Alimentación, bebidas y tabaco, con un 15,2%. • Productos metálicos, con un 12,5%. • Coquerías, refino de petróleo y químicas, con un 10,4%. The value of sales of industrial products, which in 2007 was almost €6,000 million, is concentrated in the following groups: • Production, primary processing and casting of metal (19.5%). • Food, beverages and tobacco (15.2%) • Metal products (12.5%). • Cokeries, petrol and chemical refining (10.4%).

El mercado comunitario es el protagonista principal de las operaciones de comercio exterior. The European market is the main source of foreign trade operations. La región se encuentra especializada en bienes de equipo y semimanufacturas. The region specialises in capital goods and semi-manufactured products.

Situado en el Norte de la Península Ibérica, el Puerto de Santander presenta una localización geográfica estratégica para el comercio con la Europa Atlántica y el resto del mundo: • Está integrado en un nudo logístico en el que confluyen autovías, ferrocarril, puerto y aeropuerto. • Superficie: 3.000.000 m2. • Puertos Secos en Castilla y León, Madrid y Zaragoza. • Cuenta con una Terminal de Graneles Sólidos Minerales y están en construcción una Terminal de Agroalimentarios y otra de Forestales. • Mantiene numerosas líneas regulares de tráfico ro-ro y mercancía general, así como una línea de Ferry con Plymouth con dos escalas semanales. La evolución de las emisiones directas de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (GEI) en Cantabria desde el año 1990 hasta el 2006 ha sido ascendente, pasando de algo más de 4.500.000 toneladas de CO2 a cerca de siete millones de toneladas. Estas cifras colocan a Cantabria un 53% por encima de las emisiones que tuvo el año base (1990). Direct emissions of GHGs in Cantabria increased from 1990 until 2006 from just over 4,500,000 tons of CO2 to nearly seven million tons. These figures put Cantabria 53% above the emissions of the base year (1990).
