Providing a safe, secure & inspiring environment for SEMH pupils Thomas Estley Community College, Broughton Astley, Leicestershire

“At Thomas Estley we work hard to live up to our ethos: A community of courage and commitment to success. A busy and muchextended secondary, we wanted two dedicated classrooms away from the school environment for young people aged 11 to 16 with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties. S2e worked with us to build exactly what we needed.”

Thomas Estley Community College, Broughton Astley, Leicestershire

TIMELINE Planning application – June 2020 Out to tender – June 2020 Return – July 2020 Start on site – 21 July 2020

The Task – Minimising Disruption With access limited – off the main entrance to school – keeping disruption to a minimum was a key challenge. To avoid lengthy traditional construction with multiple deliveries on site, S2e advised a modular building that could be completed off site and brought to us in a kit for quick assembly. They used pad foundations to protect our mains gas supply, ensured fire safety given proximity to our main school building and designed a brilliant specialist teaching area.

Completion – 4 August 2020 Budget: £409,000

The Solution – Fast & Effective

The Outcome – Secure & Inspiring Environment

S2e provided full consultancy services from inception to completion, including feasibility, architecture and design, tender/procurement, cost control, appointing a contractor, project management, health and safety, mechanical and electrical engineering, and structural design.

S2e’s expertise has created a teaching and learning environment where our SEMH pupils can thrive. Their two new classrooms have accessible toilet facilities, level access for all, full air conditioning and climate control, and robust links to our main fire alarm system and IT infrastructure.

Thanks to their knowledge of multiple construction techniques, excellent working relationship with the chosen contractor and ability to provide fast, effective professional advice, they leveraged their experience to quickly deliver our project within the limited school holiday period.

All in all, a wonderfully safe, secure and inspiring environment for young people.
