RL391 Naturalmente 1 primavera 2010 Instructors: Prof. Kathy Lee: [email protected] Coordinators: Prof. Kathy Lee: [email protected] Prof. Chris Wood: [email protected] Proficiency level: Students BEGINNING Naturalmente 1 should: 1. have taken CCR 2, OR 2. have received a score of 5 on the AP Spanish Language Exam, OR 3. have received a score of over 650 on the SAT II Spanish Language Exam Description and goals of the course Through intensive and structured practice, including reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking in formal and informal situations, as well as an intensive review of key grammatical concepts, the student will assimilate, at an advanced proficiency level, the communicative functions required to narrate in the past and to analyze and give opinions on contemporary debates. The goal is to make the correct use of the past tenses and the subjunctive mood part of the student's spontaneous use of spoken Spanish. By the end of the semester the student should be able to spontaneously narrate events and give opinions in a natural and accurate manner, and be conversant with the social, political and cultural circumstances of Hispanic immigrants in the United States.

Participation / Preparation / Reading Journal (10%) Oral and Written Interpretational Communciation • •

After each reading and/or audiovisual assignment, students write a response paragraph, which they submit through the Blackboard Vista page. The student should arrive to class with assignments well prepared and ready to participate actively in class discussions. Attendance is required, and each absence after the three permitted will result in a significant reduction of the final grade. Lack of preparation and/or participation will also lower the final grade.

Skype Conversations / Video Recordings (20%) Interpersonal and Presentational Oral Communication Each student will be participating in Skype conversations this semester. You are required to document a minimum of 7 Skype conversations but the goal is to converse once a week during each week of the semester. You must journal after each conversation and make notes of grammar and cultural observations. This journal will be on Blackboard Vista. You will be doing multiple video recordings during the semester about topics for discussion. After each recording, you will post the recording and record on your Blackboard Vista journal your own observations on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation errors. Blogs / Composition (30%) Written Presentational Communication Students will write 12 blog topics. After the assignment is returned it should be kept in the writing folder and errors should be explained. The explanations should be based on A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish, or on a dictionary, whichever is appropriate, and should follow the model available on the Blackboard Vista page. While writing initial assignment, consultation with tutors or anyone other than the instructor is not permitted. Students may use dictionaries, grammar textbooks or reference works, but any use of online or computer spell checkers, grammar checkers, translation programs, etc., will be considered a violation of Boston College's official policy on Academic Integrity. After corrections have been done, you need to post your topic on your blog page so that your exchange partner has access to your writing.
