Dear Family, 36 4260… the secret code for a Swiss account? Lottery numbers? No. None of those are nearly as good as 36 people who have contributed 10% of their stimulus checks in order to help other parishioners in an “economically challenged” moment. So $4260 has been recycled into the economy. What I really appreciated was some of the notes that came with the contributions. Folks took the moment to say they were grateful for God’s blessings and they were happy to help in the parish. There are always needs and we do what we can. It didn’t take long for those funds to be more than spoken for. What’s kind of amazing is that more than once I’ve given away money that took the pastoral assistance balance to zero. Within 24 hours the funds were replaced by the amount that I gave away. So thank you, all you Economic Stimulators. And for those who forget, it is never too late. I’m sure the President will be happy we are doing our part. Your fellow parishioners who received the help are grateful. Most of all, Matthew 25 tells us where the Lord comes into the picture. Speaking of economics… there are other numbers that fall in the category of operations rather than humanities and pastoral assistance. Insurance and utilities and salaries and benefits are not nearly as warm and fuzzy as pastoral assistance. In a few weeks, the Finance Committee will send the report for the financial year ending on June 30, 2008. I don’t need those numbers to know that this has been a “stressed” time for us as it has been for many of you. In the last few months, in order to meet our obligations, I took funds – well over $100,000 - from the sanctuary renovation fund. We had been saving for quite a while. It comes down to making sure we’re taking care of the essentials before we do long-desired, but nevertheless, elective

improvements. We can keep saving and we’ll get there. There are certain needs which are not elective. One of them for example is leveling and resodding the green field. This year we began purchasing a strip of land along the southern boundary of the parish from MorningStar Renewal Center. It will allow us more parking as well as an improved recreational area for the parish and the school. We will need to relocate driveways and fences, etc. We want to configure a court for basketball and volleyball. We want to locate that court in a more central position so that there will be less noise intrusion for our neighbors to have to deal with. We need a shelter for Physical Education that will also serve as a pickup area for kids after school. I think we should have the money in the bank to do these things. Right now, as a matter of fact, The Archdiocese requires that 75% of the funds required for a project should be on hand. Then there is a question of how do we treat our employees. We are all in the same boat, and they no less than everyone else, feel the pressures. We did a cost of living increase on July 1st out of a simple sense of justice. No one is going to take an Aspen ski trip on the proceeds. I’m asking you to pray about what you give. So many of you are very generous, and usually the folks who don’t have it are quicker to give than others. I guess that’s why those who have it, still have it. (Sounds like Yogi Berra, doesn’t it?) I believe with all my heart that when you spend even 30 nanoseconds asking the Lord to help you keep your priorities straight, your faith community will be fine. If I didn’t believe that, I should take my social security and run. In Jesus,

INCENSIANDO AL PUEBLO

A minister may swing incense toward the people at one point of the Mass. Incense may be used at any Mass, customarily for occasions of some importance. During the Mass, incense may accompany the entrance, the Gospel, the preparation of the gifts, and the elevations. The incensation of the people may happen during the preparation of the gifts.

Un ministro puede balancear el incensario e incensar al pueblo en algún momento durante la Santa Misa. El incienso puede utilizarse durante cualquier Misa. After the priest has set the bread and wine on the altar and before he washes his hands, a minister hands him the boat (the vessel containing grains of incense). The minister lifts the top of the thurible (the censer), and the priest spoons incense on top of the hot coals. The minister lowers the lid and hands the thurible to the priest, who hands the boat back. The priest incenses the bread and wine, the cross, and the altar. Then the minister takes the thurible from the priest and swings it toward him. As the priest washes his hands, the minister incenses the people. Usually the minister stands in front near the sanctuary steps, facing the assembly. Her bows to the people, swings the thurible toward them three times, and bows again. If the church is large, he may incense one side of the assembly and then the other. When he is finished, he goes back to his place. While this occurs, it is customary for everyone to stand. In some churches the people bow when the minister bows to them, but the rubrics of the mass do not explicitly call for this. The minister is showing reverence to the people. If incense is used, and if the minister faces you after incensing the priest, stand up, and receive the reverence of the servant of God.

“Amanecer” Grupo de Codependencia (CODA) Grupo de terapia y apoyo para personas obsesionadas en controlar y/o agradar a otras personas relacionadas con el uso o sin el uso, de substancias químicas. Después que el sacerdote ha puesto el pan y el vino sobre el altar y antes de lavarse las manos, el ministro le pasa la naveta (el recipiente que contiene los granos del incienso). Se inclina haciendo un acto de reverencia hacia el pueblo, balancea el incensario hacia ellos tres veces, y después inclina la cabeza nuevamente. Si la Iglesia es muy grande, puede incensar una parte de la asamblea primero y después la otra. Una vez que ha terminado, el ministro regresa a su lugar. Mientras esto ocurre, es habitual que todo el pueblo se ponga de pie. Querida Familia: 36 4250… ¿La clave de la cuenta de banco en Suiza? ¿Los números de la Lotería? No, ninguno de esos es tan bueno como las 36 personas que han contribuido el 10% del cheque estimulante que recibió del gobierno para ayudar a los feligreses que en estos momentos están pasando por una “intensa crisis” económica. Así que esos $4250 ya se han reciclado en la economía. Lo que realmente aprecié fueron las notas que acompañaban esas contribuciones. La gente se tomó el tiempo para expresar su agradecimiento a Dios por las bendiciones recibidas y están felices de poder ayudar en la parroquia. Siempre hay necesidades y hacemos lo que podemos. No tardó mucho tiempo en que esos fondos fueran utilizados. Lo que es impresionante es que en más de una ocasión he dado dinero dejando el fondo pastoral en cero. Y en menos de 24 horas esa cantidad es repuesta en su lugar. Así que, gracias a todos los estimulantes económicos. Y para aquellos que se han olvidado, nunca es tarde. Estoy seguro que el Presidente estará muy contento de que estemos haciendo nuestra parte. Sus hermanos feligreses que han recibido la ayuda están muy agradecidos. Sobre todo Mateo 25 nos dice dónde esta el Señor en este cuadro. Hablando de economías…hay otros números que caen en la categoría de operaciones y no en humanidades o asistencia pastoral. Seguros, utilidades, salarios y beneficios no están turbios como la asistencia pastoral. En pocas semanas, el Comité de Finanzas le enviará el reporte para el año fiscal que terminó el 30 de junio de 2008. No necesito esos números para saber que este ha sido un tiempo “muy estresante” para nosotros, así como para ustedes. En los últimos meses, para poder cumplir con nuestras obligaciones, tuve que tomar $100,000 – del fondo para la renovación del Santuario. Llevamos mucho tiempo ahorrando ese dinero. Todo se resume en asegurarnos de cumplir con lo esencial antes que nada, pero no obstante, son mejoras electivas. Seguiremos ahorrando y algún día llegaremos.

Hay ciertas necesidades que no son electivas. Por ejemplo, una de ellas es nivelar y replantar la grama del área verde. Este año comenzamos comprando una faja de tierra fronteriza con MorningStar Renewal Center. Eso nos permitirá tener más estacionamiento, así como mejorar el área recreativa para la parroquia y la escuela. Necesitamos relocalizar el paso de autos y la verja, etc. Queremos construir una cancha para baloncesto y voleibol. Queremos localizar la cancha en un lugar donde moleste lo menos posible a los vecinos. Necesitamos un cobertizo para la Educación Física y que a la misma vez sirva como el área donde los padres puedan recoger a sus hijos después de clase. Creo que debemos tener el dinero en el banco para hacer todo esto. De hecho, ahora la Arquidiócesis requiere que un 75% de los fondos para la construcción del proyecto deben estar disponibles. Hay una inquietud de cómo tratamos a nuestros empleados. Todos estamos en el mismo bote, y ellos más que nadie, sienten la presión. Para ser justos, se hizo un aumento del costo de vida el 1ro de julio. Se que con ese aumento ninguno se podrá ir de vacaciones a esquiar en Aspen. Le suplico que oren por los que donan. Muchos de ustedes son muy generosos, y usualmente los que menos tienen son los que mas rápido dan para los demás. Creo que por eso los que tienen, todavía tienen. (Suena como Yogi Berra, ¿verdad?) Creo con todo mi corazón que cuando usted se tome 30 segundos para pedirle al Señor que le ayude mantener sus prioridades, su comunidad de fe estará bien.
