Pastor’s Letter Calendar for December Faith Direct Automatic Giving Form School 55 Year Gala Celebration

Pastor’s Corner We have finally arrived at the 4th Sunday of Advent. The time is near as John the Baptist had proclaimed to the world. Tradition seems to point to Joseph being an older man and a carpenter. But in scripture we simply are told he is “betrothed” to Mary and a righteous man. But before they lived together Mary was found to be with child. Joseph knew that he was not the father. When he righteously decided to divorce her, Mary must have wept many tears. Their beautiful dream was going to come to a sudden end. Matthew’s account concludes: “When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary into his home.” Since the moment that Mary was visited by the angel and she said “Yes” the world began to love her and see her as unique and special. “Mary: The Most Powerful Woman in the World” was the stunning headline in a publication. To the surprise of many, these were not the words of a Catholic newspaper, or a religious publication. Instead, this headline announced the lead article featured in the December, 2015 issue of National Geographic magazine! The article was written by journalist, Maureen Orth, who spent three years traveling throughout the world trying to understand more fully why Mary, the mother of Jesus, is so crucially important to millions of people. Here are some of her words: “Mary is everywhere: Marigolds are named after her. Hail Mary passes save football games. The image in Mexico of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most reproduced female likenesses ever. Mary draws millions each year to shrines such as Fatima, in Portugal, and Knock in Ireland, sustaining religious tourism estimated to be worth billions of dollars a year and providing thousands of jobs. She inspired the creation of many great works of art and architecture (Michelangelo’s “Pieta,” Notre Dame Cathedral), as well as the spiritual confidante of billions of people, no matter how isolated or forgotten. Jesus’ mother, Mary, is comforting to all of us and especially offers words of hope to the neediest - such as these words from her great prayer, the Magnificat: “...O my God ... You have shown strength with your arm ... You have put down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.” When asked what Mary meant to him, Pope Francis answered, “She is my mama.” On this 4th Sunday of Advent may our “mama” the one who is “blessed ... among women,” assist each of us in birthing anew the Child that comes from heaven into our arms ... our hearts ... our souls. Next Saturday, December 24th, is Christmas Eve and th Sunday, December 25 , is Christmas Day. If you are in town please join us for one of our many Christmas Masses. Christmas Eve Masses are at: 3:30pm (Children/ Family Mass), (4:00pm Hall), 6:00pm, 7:30pm (Spanish), 11:30pm Pre-Midnight Mass Concert - 12:00am - Midnight Concelebrated Mass (bilingual). Christmas Day Masses: 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:45am and 12:30pm (Spanish). There is NO 5:30pm Mass on Christmas Day. I pray that the soon to be born Prince of Peace will bless all of you. May his mother, Mary, watch over all of us as a loving and caring mother. Blessed Christmas to all. Father Michael Rocha

Tú has hecho proezas con tu Brazo... Padre Michael Rocha

Together in Mission

These are the latest figures regarding our parish’s response to this year’s Together in Mission Campaign. Goal: Pledged: Paid Over/Under Goal

$120,700.00 $122,628.00 $116,648.00 -$ 4,052.00

Together in Mission 2016 The 2016 Together in Mission Campaign is coming to an end. Our goal was assigned to us at $120,700.00. Our Community pledged $122,628.00. The amount paid to date is $116, 498.00. We are so close in reaching our goal but I feel we will fall short in helping financially struggling parishes and schools in the Archdiocese. I would like to ask those of you who have not fulfilled your pledges to do so as soon as possible if you can. If you did not pledge, but are now motivated to give - your contribution would be greatly appreciated. For all of you who pledged and completed your pledge - Thank you so very much. Thank you all for caring so much about others in the Archdiocese who will benefit from your generosity. Fr. Michael A new prayer group in honor of St. Michael is beginning.

It will be a prayer gathering of parishioners with a holy hour of prayer. Meetings will be held each Tuesday (except December 6 and March 28) from 6:45 to 8:15 pm, Room 3 in the Parish Hall., Chaplet of St. Michael will be prayed. All are welcome to this new prayer group. Light refreshments, and snacks will be provided.

DID YOU KNOW? Set guidelines for holiday visits to ensure your child’s safety. Your holiday plans may include spending a few nights at a family member or friend’s house, possibly with all the kids piling into a few rooms to sleep. Before you go, remind your kids about their body boundaries and what to do if someone violates those limits. Explain which areas are okay for others to touch and what areas are off limits. Inform the child that any areas that would be covered by underwear or swimsuits are off limits. For more information on helping a child establish boundaries, a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Teaching Boundaries,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.

SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Treasures from our Tradition By now, the first Christmas carols are heard in the home, but usually not yet in church. What is a “carol” anyway? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a festival such as a harvest. By the thirteenth century or so, carols were associated with household celebrations. “Carol” comes from the Old French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren’t for church, since the language of liturgy was Latin and the carols were in the common language. Their characteristic sound comes from medieval chord patterns, and they often have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the Reformation, carols didn’t make it into church services until the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. Anglicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn’t admit carols to liturgy either, but we didn’t make laws against them. We are told that the beloved carol “Silent Night” comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, had written the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the church’s organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in 1818. The people were shocked to hear a guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the “Silent Night Memorial Chapel” at the site. Today the carol is in print in some three hundred languages. How wonderful that the pipe organ broke on that night! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 They shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic ministry which works with the poor, the homeless, and the disenfranchised people of its community. Here at St. Paschal Baylon our St. Vincent de Paul keeps a pantry open from 10 am to 12 pm Monday through Friday. Although we are mainly a food pantry, we also assist with bills for utilities, rent or gas. Our clients do not have to belong to the Parish but they must be from the Conejo Valley. We work with other Societies of SVDP to maximize our assistance. We rely on our parishioners for food through donations through Project Response, drop-offs at the back of the church and other ministries who do collections during the year. Pope Francis tells us to live our Faith with the Corporal Works of Mercy. Through the ministry of SVDP we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the needy, and help with housing. Come join us! The rewards are great! We are in need of volunteers to assist us in our works of mercy. Time commitment is one shift at the pantry every other week and if possible bi-monthly meetings. Please call Cathy Hines (805-341-3026) or Sandy Elias (805-405-2586) if you have any questions.
