Getting to Know Your Faith This year, the St. Sabina Adult Faith Formation Team is offering a series called “Getting to Know Your Faith.” Many Catholics see the need for growing in their faith by exploring the richness of the tradition and wisdom that has been handed down to us from those who have gone before us. Taking seriously Vatican II’s call to form people into “full, conscious and active” participants in their faith lives, we are offering these sessions to provide another avenue of continued growth in our faith. Every third Monday of the month, from 7-8:30 PM, we will explore a different topic together that will help us in getting to know our faith better. The remaining sessions are as follows: Oct 17, 2016 – Devotions to Mary and the Saints Nov 21, 2016– Lectionary Structure and the AdventChristmas-Epiphany Season The sessions will be facilitated by Biagio Mazza, Pastoral Associate of St. Sabina Parish. To register, please contact Biagio either by phone at 816-979-3153 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Amoris Laetitia, The Joy of Love Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation on Love and Family  What Does it Say?  What Does It Have To Do With Me? Tuesday Evenings, Oct 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov 1, 7-9pm Repeated Wednesday Mornings, Oct 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov 2, 10am-Noon After two full Synods on the Family in 2014 and 2015, Pope Francis issued the Apostolic Exhortation known as Amoris Laetitia, The Joy of Love. An Apostolic Exhortation attempts to gather the wisdom of the Synod participants, along with the insights and perspective of the pope. These five two-hour sessions will explore select texts from Amoris Laetitia, highlighting the wisdom and the insights into love, family and relationship of both Pope Francis and the synod participants. We will examine Francis’ scriptural reflection on love as it impacts real world relationships, and our response to hurting or failed relationships, with special attention paid to divorced and remarried Catholics. Come, bring a friend and let us together explore the richness of this important document and what it is saying to us here today. The sessions will be facilitated by Biagio Mazza. All denominations and faith traditions are most welcome. To register, call Biagio at 816-9793153 or e-mail him at [email protected]

Pupusa Sale - October 2

Chiefs Raffle Tickets

On Sunday, October 2 our Salvadoran community will be selling pupusas after Masses. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish made of a thick, handmade corn tortilla that is usually filled with variations of cheese, pork, and refried beans. There will be samples to try so you can purchase your favorite variety. The cost will be $2 each and you can purchase them to go. All funds collected will be used to fund our annual celebration in honor of Blessed Oscar Romero.

Many of you know that the parish has been selling raffle tickets to raise funds for the college tuition of our 7 scholarship students in Cinquera, El Salvador. What you might not know is that Fr. Jeff personally purchased season tickets to the Chiefs, and has donated the tickets to the parish to raise funds for the students. Please, please help Fr. Jeff make the most of his very generous donation by purchasing a chance to win tickets to the game. Each chance costs $20 and the seats are located at Section 101, Row 27, Seats 11 and 12. We are also selling chances for the following games: Sunday, October 23rd, Noon, New Orleans Saints Sunday, November 6th, Noon, Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, December 8th, 7:25pm, Los Angeles Raiders Sunday, December 18th, Noon, Tennessee Titans Sunday, December 25th, 7:30pm, Denver Broncos You may purchase a raffle ticket to one of the above games at any time. To purchase a raffle ticket, please contact either Fr Jeff or Kris and let us know which game you'd like to purchase the raffle ticket for. Again, please help Fr. Jeff raise funds to send our scholarship students to college. Without our help they will not be able to get an education and their families will continue to live in poverty. Congratulations to Cathy Ware, who won the tickets to the home opener against the San Diego Chargers!!

Feeling Lost this Election Year? “As a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. However, as a people, we face serious challenges that are both political and moral. This has always been so, and as Catholics we are called to participate in public life in a manner consistent with the mission of our Lord, a mission that he has called us to share” (US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship). So how do we discern how to best vote this year; how to vote in a way that protects the dignity of all God’s creation? On Tuesday, September 27, at 7pm in the Parish Hall, Fr. Jeff will go over the Catholic teaching of many of the current issues we face in the political world today. He will be using as a guide, the statement made by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. All participants will receive a copy of this resource to take home and reflect on.

People in a rowboat came and said, “Get in.” “No,” replied the man. “I have faith; God will save me.” So they rowed away. A speedboat came roaring by. “Climb in!” shouted the driver. “No,” said the man. “I have faith; God will save me.” The driver gunned the engine and left. The water lapped at the roof as the man prayed for rescue. A helicopter approached. The pilot shouted that he would lower a rope. “No,” replied the man. “I have faith; God will save me.” The helicopter left as the man prayed desperately. The floodwaters rose further and in the fierce currents the man quickly drowned. In heaven, he marched up to God. “I had faith in you,” he said. “ I prayed for you to save me and you did nothing. Why?” God looked puzzled. “I sent two boats and a helicopter. What more did you expect?”

What is the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA)? The ACA is the annual fundraising campaign that supports the work of the Diocese of Kansas City—St. Joseph, and is our way of supporting the work of the Catholic Church, both in our parish and throughout Northwest Missouri. Did you know…? Your ACA pledge is part of your personal commitment to Christian Stewardship; giving thanks to God by returning a portion of the blessings God has given you. There are so many ways God is made visible in the world around us. Our local Church sees God in the hundreds of thousands of people it takes care of every year by teaching, sheltering and caring for all who come to it for help. In the coming weeks you will receive a packet with a pledge card in the mail. Our parish goal is to raise $18,795.00 and the goal diocesan-wide is to raise $1,800,000.00. Please prayerfully consider helping us reach this goal by making a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal this year.

is very helpful for John to know in advance how many helpers we will have so he can determine how many houses our parish volunteers will be able to help with.

Usher/Greeter Formation Please help to meet a great need at our parish and prayerfully consider becoming an Usher/Greeter at St. Sabina. We currently do not have enough ushers to schedule at each weekend Mass. Our goal is to increase the number of active, scheduled ushers so that we can have a team of 6 at each Mass. To do this, we need roughly 24 ushers available to serve at each weekend Mass time. This means we are looking for 50 new parishioners to serve as Usher/Greeters. Any member of our parish, male, female, age 15-115, can be an Usher/Greeter. What do ushers/greeters do?  Ushers are responsible for welcoming people as they arrive for Mass.  They create an atmosphere of hospitality and make sure general needs of our community are met as they arrive at church.  Ushers take up the collection and find members of our community to present the offering during Mass.  They help facilitate processions and assist during large or special liturgies, when things may be a bit unfamiliar for the assembly.  They often pass out needed materials (bulletins, candles, special envelopes) Two formation sessions offered to accommodate your schedule. Please register for one session only. The two options are: Saturday, October 1 at 5:00 PM in the church or Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00PM in the church (Sign up for one session) Please either email Susan Ratigan at [email protected] or sign up on the Registration Form in the Gathering Space to register for formation. You can see there is a great need. Please consider sharing your time with our parish to fill this need. The ministry of Usher/Greeter is much more than taking up the collection. Ushers are the face of welcome and hospitality of our parish. Ushers help connect individuals to the parish and each other. This truly is a vital ministry and we need you.

Some parents remind children with unfinished dinner plates that there are many poor children going to bed hungry. The reminder often falls on deaf ears because the poor are usually an abstract group with which we find difficulty identifying. But what if those poor, starving children had a name, a face and an identity we could connect with. Maybe then the poor would not be so distant and abstract. Luke’s gospel parable addresses this very issue. Lazarus is a poor person, hungry, and with sores, lying at the very door of the rich man. The rich man could not avoid physically seeing him. Yet, no mention is made that the rich man ever notices, pays attention to, is concerned about or cares at all for Lazarus. There is a great divide between the rich man and Lazarus, not because of wealth, but because of the rich man’s inability to notice, pay attention to or care for one in need, lying at his very door. Wealth in itself is not being criticized by Luke’s Jesus. Rather the critique centers on how wealth can insulate and blind us from noticing or paying attention to others in need. The first reading from the prophet Amos proclaims the same message of inattention to and uncaring for the poor by the rich. “Lying upon beds of ivory and stretched comfortably on their couches” makes people less attentive to the needs of others. Not that such comfortableness is bad or evil. Rather, it can become a great obstacle in our attentiveness to the needs of others. If we have

what we would like and more, why do we have to bother with the needs of others? That is the danger of wealth and comfortableness.

In order to help us all enter into the Bible through the Sunday readings, we are offering study sessions that will provide an opportunity to read, to study background to the readings, and to reflect on how to apply the readings to our lives. We will gather on September 25th and October 9th at 10:30am. All are welcome. Bring a Bible and a friend. To register for these sessions, please call Biagio at 816-979-3153.

“No, tengo fe y Dios me slavará”. La lancha aceleró y se alejó. El agua tocaba ya los bordes del techo mientras que el hombre oraba para ser salvado. Llegó un helicóptero y el piloto le gritó que le iba a bajar una soga. “No, tengo fe y Dios me salvará”.
