It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. - Albert Einstein The role of a school is not only to pursue academic excellence but also to motivate and empower its students to be critical thinkers and productive members of an ever changing era. A school must provide its students a space for all round development, where children are encouraged to channelize their poetenial in the pursuit of excellence. This vidyalaya believes that it is necessary to empower young minds, provide appropriate education to help its students nurture their talents and enable the students for an all round personality development. It is a great pleasure to release the Annual Magazine of our Vidyalaya for the year 2022-23 comprising of creative writing of the young minds with their achievements and activities during this academic year. This will be a reflection of their thoughts and ideas. I would like to congratulate the teacher on the Editorial Board who guided the students to publish the E-magazine. A mistake here and there may kindly be ignored for the encouragement and motivation of the students. M.B. CHETTRI PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL’S DESK

In this constantly ever changing society the young minds are pitted with drastic changes in their environment. In these formative years they need a genial, tranquil and natural learning environment. K.V. EAC Upper Shillong provides all these to the child. With the ever increasing demand of competitions, fast changing values, pressure of challenging career and increasing love for materialistic life it has become difficult for the individuals to maintain its prime values intact. We at the Vidyalaya try to imbibe values of love, culture and knowledge through education that enables them to adjust and adapt to the emerging society of multicultural thoughts beliefs and religions. It fosters them with the courage that kindles optimism and the will power not to give up during adversities. In this era of cut throat competition, it is of paramount importance to impart an integrated education to the future citizens of the Nation for successfully facing multitasking social milieu. K.V.EAC Upper Shillong, therefore, lays special emphasis on both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities providing students an edge over others to be a leader in their respective field of activity. The ‘Vidyalaya EPatrika’ would also be a true reflection of all these diverse achievements and progresses made and being made by the school in fulfilling the coveted goal of imparting disciplined and quality education. To channelize the creative aspect of the child the Vidyalaya has come up with the ‘Vidyalaya Patrika’. This is not just a means for the Vidylaya to communicate its thought but it also highlights the success and achievement of its pursuits. It gives an insight to ones thought and creativity through varied expressions. Our children have been able to leave their imprint in the path they have walked till now and the Vidyalaya has carved a niche of its own in the educational hub. The Vidyalaya, where the quality matters the most, reflects the kaleidoscope of learning, adventures, creativities and positive approach of our young minds through writings and drawings. I hope this effort of our young minds will serve as a stepping stone towards the many miles stones we have to cover in pursuit of excellence… PHOOL KANWAR VICE-PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM VICE-PRINCIPAL’S DESK

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE ACADEMIC SESSION OF 2021-2022 BEST PRACTICES IN COVID-19 PANDEMIC Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” Albert Einstein. The outbreak of Covid 19 has left the country shut its doors to contain the spread of the corona virus leading to disruption in the lives of people. The country is immensely proud of the teaching community. Teachers have embraced the present situation with positivity and used it as growth opportunity. Conducting online classes in a rural area has its own challenges and many students who do not have access to smart phones or internet services get left out in the process. There are a few students in our school who live in remote areas and they don’t have access to smart phones. In our school, most of the teachers are residing in campus area, so it was difficult for us to visit at each student’s house during lockdown. In that situation ,we planned to arrange some important notes, books, sample papers for the students and also requested to those students’ parents who had access to smart phones could visit their houses twice in a week .In this way they could appear in their periodic ,pre board exams and also received information time to time. At the starting of the session, some parents were not ready to admit their child in the next class because they didn’t have mobile phones and they did not have the means to arrange the school fee for their ward. In such a situation we convinced the parents that they should not worry about the school fees. Rather they should think about the student’s career and we assured them that we were ready to pay their child’s school fees as well. Many of the teachers in our school paid students’ school fees. “The bigger issue was not the effect on students’ learning level but on keeping them in school.” However many challenges have been observed during this lockdown period . This pandemic was an opportunity and exercise for remote teaching and develop a coherent online education strategy for any other emergencies or natural disasters that can potentially happen in future.

It has become an important measure to determine the success of the education system of the country. It serves as a reference manual for the implementation of Continuous Assessment across the world. It is important for teachers to have skills to prepare students for PISA testing as it is not only about the test but also about the variety of skills that students need to develop in order to be successful in life. 1.Students are doing weekly practice sets in all three domains I.e Reading literacy, Mathematical literacy and Scientific literacy. 2.Mentors are providing proper guidance to their mentees. 3. Performance of students is not upto mark but it is improving gradually. 4. PISA eligible and PISA non-eligible students are grouped under mentor mentee provision so that one-to-one discussion takes place for their doubts. 5.Micro level analysis for all students is prepared so that more practice is required to be done by students. 6.Out of regular class routine two classes per week for every domain is allotted. 7.Role of mentors is considerably noticeable, mentors providing CCT based questions ,out of every chapter going on regular classes. 8.Major concern for poor performance of students may be their lack of awareness for CCT and its less weightage to the academic results. 9.Action Plan is prepared at school level regarding their poor performance. 10. Parent-Teacher meeting is organised once in a month to sensitize parents regarding CCT skills. 11.CCT practice test is organised every month for better analysis and improvement in students' performance. THE DEER I SAW ONCE Down the pouring rain, while I was standing at the edge of that roads lane. I saw this patient being far away in the woods near the farm’s hay. She was having actual doe eyes and innocent grace. The being was not going any place. Rather it gave a strong stare straight on my way, she quietly raised her head above and lifted her leg. I was waiting stoned for her to make a step, I was already fascinated by the grace she kept. She took the step, while I heard a sharp dense shot, I didn’t wonder where it came from. I saw the deer fall hard without any sound, the the soft grass molded making her a sweet bed. I couldn’t see her any further, I don’t know whyI didn’t see her getting up, I didn’t see her doe eyes. She must have left the ugly woods, she must have settled for a better place as she should. I walked away while it rained, I hope that I see her again. SELF LOVE I've spent so much time, Blissfully grumbling and loathing myself. Perceiving it's only me; But! I surmise that we all Go through the same story Yet, in a distinct way. Musing that everyone abhors us; Nevertheless if we start loving ourselves, No one will... We are enough, we are worthy, We are significant; Give yourself time to blossom; Moreover, you will bloom beautifully, For, Self Love is a Revolution. - Effie. D. R. Tariang

w w w . r e a l l y g r e a t s i t e . c o m PODCAST REVIEW My favourite coronavirus podcast is the efficient, antiseptic, un-podcast like, and somewhat mysterious “Coronavirus 411.” It’s a quick, facts-only daily update, with no obvious affiliation, delivered by an unidentified female voice: pure news, culled from the C.D.C., the W.H.O., and other sources, piped into your ears. It offers a roundup of worldwide and national news updates and a reading of case numbers in each country and, now, state. It’s extremely sobering to listen to a few days’ episodes in succession—the numbers rise quickly. The show’s narrator is human, but she could pass for a bot, and that’s just fine with me: as we practice our social distancing, the uncanny valley seems as good a place as any to seek refuge. The famous qualities that tend to distinguish podcasts—intimacy, folksiness, a hangout vibe—happen to be what I don’t want during a pandemic, and “Coronavirus 411” lacks them all. “Coronavirus 411” was created by William Corbin, who works at a branded-podcast company called Sound That Brands, which produces the show. He got the idea in January, after becoming frustrated at his Amazon Echo. “I asked Alexa for information about the coronavirus, and she read the Wikipedia entry, ” he told me, incredulous. He tried building an Alexa coronavirus skill, then realized that making a short podcast would be easier. He wanted its content to be authoritative: C.D.C., W.H.O., verified news. “One doctor’s opinion is not of interest to me; a thousand doctors’ opinions are of interest to me, ” Corbin said. He joined forces with a newscaster to read the results—just the facts. “If you ever want to get news out, go to a marketer, ” he said. “What people want in news is news.” A similarly homespun, and promising, new show, “Coronavirus Daily Briefing, ” from Ride Home Media, seems to share that ethos. In it, a serious, somewhat stressed-out-sounding man named Brian McCullough reads news, shares horrifying field reports from Italy, and explains why regular old soap is effective and should be used on our hands, post haste. It stays on the right side of informed, non-hysterical, and focussed. BY – SANJANA SINGH , XII-A

The GRANDMA STAR This story is familiar to everyone. In this world, but very few understands extend of love and care by a… … . An evening, a small boy named Manav was lying close to his grandma corpse, crying and wailing for the loss he had. He kept on weeping but nobody stopped him because weeping can reduce his pain and would prevent him from trauma. From that day Manav lost interest in every thing, he didn't ate anything and become quiet. All of the family became tensed by his behavior. Seeing this his mother told him that grandma is always with you and you can see her every night. Manav didn't get what she said. One night, when Manav was sitting in his bed, he saw a beam of light peeping into his room through the window. He was astonished by what he saw. It was a bright star seems like staring at him with a smile. Tha star asked, don't you recognize me. Manav with a surprised face said no I don't, who are you. The star replied I am your grandma star. Manav became happy on listening to it and said grandma please come back. Grandma said no I can't, your grandpa is alone and he needs me. Manav my child., you have your mother and grandpa don't have anyone, my little boy don't worry, you can meet me every night, you have to promise me you will not be sad and you will take care of yourself. If you will keep your promise, you will meet me one day. Manav promise d grandma he will be happy always. The grandma star suddenly vanished into the sky. Manav's father suddenly noticed a woman dressed as a star approaching towards their house. He asked that lady who you are. The lady replied taking out her mask… . Your Wife! 'The Grandma Star' and explained everything that happened. After that incident, there was a huge change in Manav's behavior. It was his mother who brought this change. That's why it's said "A mother is she who can take place of others but whose place no one else can take". Name - Aswathy Subash Class - 12th A

A MAN CHOOSES I break my bones on a sunny day , To build the home in whose comfort they say, When I ask them “Why?” , they say, A “Man” chooses , A “Slave” obeys . I overheat my feet in the prickly heat, While they rest restful in the backseat, When I ask them “Why?” , they say, A “Man” chooses , A “Slave” obeys . They command the strings of my life , Break my will like a blunted knife, If I try to break-free , they will say…….. – MOHIT XII ‘A
