NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR TEKSas Daily Moose for Grade 4/5 was a spin-off of the Muscle Moose Math Fitness Center that was published in 1995. It incorporated the same basic idea of empowering the teacher to create daily distributive practice tests that meet the needs of three levels of achievement in a single classroom. TEKSas Daily Moose for third grade was originally planned to be ready in the summer of 200 I. However, the success of the fourth/fifth grade level and third grade teachers' intense interest in a third grade book prompted me to begin this project in October and publish it in February 2001. A third grade teacher at my school used it (hot off my printer) with two of her classes. BOTH of her classes had 100% passing! In addition, my own class had 1000/0 passing this year (2000-2001) after using the Grade 4/5 level! The entire fourth grade used it for a passing rate of 970/0--our grade level's highest passing rate ever! The largest member of the deer family is a real workhorse. TEKSas Daily Moose for Grade 5/6 published in 2001 completed the TEKSas Daily Moose trilogy. In 2002 TEKSas Daily Moose, Jr., for Second Grade was published, providing a solid background for the third grade TAKS test.

Another series of books is being written for middle school called TEKSas Daily Moosenager. The Grade 6/7 book was published in 2003 and the 7/8 book was hot off the press in July of 2004. One very important feature of this series of books is that the questions in TEKSas Daily Moose are keyed to the pocket numbers of the recently updated Muscle Moose Math Fitness Center. This book is an instant source of new questions for current and future users of the Muscle Moose Math Fitness Center, yet keeps the option of using it as a stand-alone source of daily distributive practice (or a combination of both). Several highly successful key components of the Muscle Moose Math Fitness Center are included in this book: • Weekly answer sheets, making it easy for teachers to grade and accurately assess student progress, yet providing students with the opportunity to learn from their mistakes by grading their own test as a class

These pages form a direct link to the fourth grade curriculum AND to TEKSas Daily Moose Grade 4/5. The fifteen nine­ question pages and the five bonus pages provide a smooth transition to the Grade 4/5 format. The one hundred daily tests and the twenty additional tests provide one hundred twenty opportunities for students to practice TEKS and TAKS skills in a mixed format. Teachers can still use single objective practice materials as needed. The tracking sheets help pinpoint times during the year when more practice may be needed.

Another very important feature of TEKSas Daily Moose is that since the questions come in strips, you can easily cut and paste the strips together to create tests and bonus pages of your own! TEKSas Daily Moose is a unique combination of structure and flexibility. Your students will look forward to seeing what the cartoon moose on question number eight (and later, nine) says next. Will he be helpful, funny, or downright sarcastic? They will enjoy keeping track of their progress and will become confident in their ability to tackle multiple TEKS and TAKS skills.

Twenty-seven years of teaching a variety of grade levels (second, third, fourth, sixth, and gifted and talented third, fourth, and fifth) have given me the background to develop the tests in a widely accepted sequence and level of difficulty for the multiple levels of students you will have in your classroom this year. If this sequence varies in your district, your school, or your classroom, you can very easily juggle the tests or the question strips around to suit the needs of your own students.

With the publication of this third grade level book you can use BOTH the third grade and the grade 4/5 level of TEKSas Daily Moose to meet a wide range of achievement levels in your classroom. Daily distributive practice, especially on the appropriate level, is a key component to a strong mathematics program. I Design and Scoring of the TEKSas Daily Moose Tests Third Grade The one hundred twenty tests of TEKSas Daily Moose for Third Grade are both sequential and cumulative. They are designed to meet the needs of three levels of achievement in your classroom. Because of this special design, scoring should be done as suggested on the appropriate answer keys. Use the chart TEKSas Daily Moose for Third Grade on the previous page to get the overall picture of the three levels of tests and how they should be used with the three levels of students in your classroom. This book is designed so that in tests 1-100 the material in question eight later moves to questions 1-6 to where it counts for the average third grade student. This system of constantly challenging the students with a built-in bonus (or bonuses), yet eventually making them responsible for the material, is what makes TEKSas Daily Moose a unique and valuable program. The transition tests (pages 101-115) have three bonus questions for

average and gifted students. These pages can also be used in a more challenging manner for the gifted students by making questions 1-8 the regular questions and question 9 the only bonus question. An alternative grading scale/key is included if you have students who meet this higher level of expectation. The transition pages also include five bonus pages (pages 116-120) that are made from the three bonus questions on pages 101-115. As noted on the chart mentioned earlier, these pages can be used as a posttest of third grade, a pretest for fourth grade, or as extra practice for gifted students. So that you will understand the transition pages better, the page for design and scoring of the tests for grade 4/5 is included on the next page. In addition, the page for design and scoring of the bonus pages is included as well. For maximum student achievement and the best school wide results, fourth and fifth grade should use TEKSas Daily Moose as well. This same system can be used to create your own three level tests using the Muscle Moose Math Fitness Center and the Muscle Moosenager Math Fitness Center described at the end of this book Ordering information is also provided. U sing the two products together will create even greater results.

Suggested Procedure for Using TEKSas Daily Moose Third Grade Use tests 1-100 in order Use the tests in order, starting with Day 1 the SECOND week of school (or later if it appears that your class needs more review or time adjusting to the new grade).

Choose an answer sheet Choose an answer sheet for the week. A variety of answer sheets are available for third grade. Some pages have bubbles and some pages don't. If you feel that your students are not ready for bubbles, choose an answer sheet on which they write the answers or letters themselves. Muscle Moose Math folders (available on the order fonn) provide an alternative to paper answer sheets. If you like to use laminated materials and overhead pens, these folders are perfect for a third grade classroom. I was teaching third grade when I designed these folders. They are printed on peach cardstock in four colors and include pictures of Muscle Moose and the Muscle Moose characters. The folders have a built-in answer sheet and a variety of graphic aids. Place value charts, number lines, fraction bars, decimal squares, dot paper, and a multiplication chart are printed directly on the folder. All you do is laminate them, and your folders are ready for use! These folders would be ideal for use with Level One pages as a transition to the paper answer sheets.

I Level Three (pages 101-120) has additional answer sheets that are included in the fourth and fifth grade level of TEKSas Daily Moose. You may want to use these answer sheets with your gifted students so that you will have the appropriate graphic aids for the bonus questions right on the page! Remember: You don't have to do a test per day or 5 per week unless desired. You can write the day numbers you will be doing that week on the answer sheet before running the copies and/or the day of the week above that day number. Or you can run a large quantity of copies of the blank form and have the students write in the day of the week and the day's test number as they are assigned. Example: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Day 6 Day 7 Day 9 Day 8 Day 10 or Tuesday Thursday Friday Monday Wednesday Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Day 9 Day 10 Consider using colored paper for the answer sheets. Students respond very well to colored paper, especially when they can choose their own color. Run a variety of colors!

Use the tests as morning warm-ups or independent practice Do the daily test as a morning warm-up or as an independent activity when you are working with a small group. Have students put their answers on the paper AND on the weekly answer sheet. For example, if it is Monday and your students are doing Day 1, they will mark on the Day 1 worksheet (do strategies, show their work, etc.) and then put their answers on the answer sheet under "Monday".

Collect answer sheets before checking work as a class Have students tum in their answer sheet to you. When you have collected all the answer sheets, use a transparency of the day's test to go over the answers. This procedure ensures that your students learn from their mistakes, and they cannot change answers (because you grade the answer sheet). Checking the daily test together inspires students to do better the next day and keeps the ones who are performing well more aware and proud of their good grades and progress.

Grade the answer sheets promptly At planning time grade their answer sheet, and if desired, use the weekly tracking sheet to pinpoint TEKS and TAAS/TAKS objectives that may need additional work.

Track student progress You may also want to note which students are having difficulty by writing their names or cubby numbers in the blank columns of the weekly tracking sheet. A separate explanation of the tracking sheet is included later in this book.

Return answer sheets and reward good progress Return the answer sheets the next morning in a central location or assign a student helper to pass them out. Give the students a reward of stickers, candy, points, etc. for making above a certain grade on the previous day's test. For example, if a student makes 80 or above, he will receive a reward. You can set the standards a little lower at the beginning of the year and gradually raise the score required. Give the reward before students start on the day's new test. Those pieces of candy in their mouths will remind them of their good work the day before.

Document the reward Put a check mark by the daily grade ON THE ANSWER SHEET so that you and the class can remember they have been rewarded. (Students might "accidentally" try to collect twice). Or record the reward as a point or as "money" deposited in their checking account (if you are using that system).

Figure and record averages in your grade book On Friday (if YOU do the averaging) or the following Monday (if the more gifted students do the averaging), cross out the lowest grade for the week's tests (or the five days worth of tests), average the remaining four grades, and place the average at the top of the answer sheet and circle it. Put the average (the circled grade) for the week's tests (or the five days worth of tests) in your grade book. You may also want to record the daily test grades either in your grade book or in some other way instead of just the averages, just in case students lose their answer sheet on their way to your desk or YOU lose it!

Have students record the weekly average (or the average for the five days worth of tests) on the semester bar graph sheet. Take up the bar graphs until the next week so students will not lose them. If students make 80 or above for the week (or whatever standard you set), you might want to give them an extra reward, point, or "dollar". Put a check by the circled grade as you give out rewards (or points). You could make a transparency of the bar graph to record the class!s weekly average, too. Students like to know how they are doing compared to the class as a whole. Students who are struggling could be rewarded for improving their average from week to week. This method ensures that ALL students will be recognized for their efforts.

Start a new answer sheet First, check the bottom of the sheet you are running to make sure that it is the correct one for the pages your students will be doing. Give students a new answer sheet for the week (or for the period of time for anywhere from five to fifteen days). You may want to run answer sheets on BOTH sides to save paper. An answer sheet could be used for as many as thirty days of tests. However, this longer time period might result in more lost or misplaced answer sheets.

Start a new bar graph At the end of the approximately 18 weeks that comprise the first semester, run and pass out the bar graph for the second semester. Keep the first semester bar graph in each student's file or portfolio for parent conferences or for future reference and documentation.

Use the transition pages after TAKS * When you get to the Level Three tests, you can also customize the answer sheet that just has the bubbles so that it has the combination of graphic aids that may more closely meet your objectives that week. There are many math topics that must be taught AFTER TAKS in order to prepare students for the fourth grade. Use the alternative grading scalelkey for your gifted students. In other words, you make your better students do

questions 1-8 as regular work and have only question 9 as the bonus. This raises the bar for your better students.

You can also use these transition pages BEFORE TAKS for your gifted students as independent practice while you work with other students that need your help.

Use the five bonus pages after T AKS for gifted students There are five bonus pages included in the third grade level of TEKSas Daily Moose. (Fourth and fifth grades have thirty). The bonus pages are a repeat of questions 7, 8, and 9 from the previous three days wOlih of tests (Days 101 to 115).

Use the suggestions as guidelines The suggestions above come from the author's own personal teaching style and successful classroom experience with this system. You, as the classroom teacher, will want to adapt these suggestions to your own teaching style and incorporate the materials into your total math program in a way that will help you meet the needs of your current classroom.
