Welcome Welcome to the Winter 2023 edition of Reaching Out. A new year heralds new beginnings and opportunities. I’d like to extend a warm hello to all our readers. I’m delighted to be the new Chief Executive for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. This year I will celebrate eleven years at the hospice and move to this new role from my previous position as Clinical Services Director. I want to celebrate and give thanks for the exceptional leadership of our previous CEO, David Scott-Ralphs. By now, David will be embarking on his new beginning and enjoying his well-deserved retirement – hopefully with a cup of tea and the latest edition of Reaching Out! I’m sure you will join me in wishing David all the best and acknowledging the great legacy he leaves. It’s not too late to make a New Year resolution. Could that be committing to a new challenge such as our Firewalk, or running 5km in our fantastic Rainbow Run? There are opportunities to suit everyone over the following pages. We also celebrate some wonderful contributions and successes, including Jack Matthews’ achievement running the London Marathon in memory of his brother. There are many other stories inside to warm us on these winter days. Finally, a big shout out to our Retail Team. Our Home Store opened in October and is doing a roaring trade. Our shops and online sales are such an important part of the hospice, enabling us to continue to do great work. Happy reading and a happy 2023! Best wishes

Volunteers are such an integral part of our events. We are always looking for people to lend a hand. If running through clouds of powder paint or dashing over hot coals doesn’t take your fancy, volunteering is an excellent way to be part of the atmosphere. If you would like to get involved, please contact our Fundraising Team at [email protected] or 01323 434284.

You pledge to raise a specific amount over the course of a year, and we support you in return by marketing you to new audiences, enabling you to reflect your brand values in a whole new way. Your support will allow us to care for more people in the community – find out more by contacting our Corporate Fundraisers: Liz Silvester – [email protected] / 01323 434221 or Simon Cosham – simon. In memory

Pay for your Memory Tree dedication with a monthly Direct Debit Our beautiful Memory Tree in The Street continues to grow. This year we have seen so many new leaves and flower heads added, and the new butterflies are really taking off! Whether you choose to pay tribute to your loved one with a copper, silver or gold leaf, a flower head or a butterfly, why not spread the cost with a monthly Direct Debit? This means you can spread the cost over a year instead of paying up front, providing a regular income for the hospice. Pauline McEwan has a gold leaf in memory of her husband Bob: ‘Organising the leaf on the Memory Tree was the last thing I could do for Bob. It is a comfort to see it and remember him as I sit quietly with a cup of tea. Paying monthly by Direct Debit is my way of thanking St Wilfrid’s for the wonderful care both Bob and I received in the last few weeks of his life.’

Open Gardens Annual Pass 2023

Kerry Redfern has paid tribute to her mother Tina with a copper leaf: ‘I’m one of four sisters; our mum Tina died on the 26th September 2019 at St Wilfrid’s with us all by her side. ‘A leaf on the Memory Tree was one of the first things I organised after she died as it gave us somewhere to visit and to reflect on our loss. It makes us feel close to Mum. Anyone who visits the hospice can see her name and how much she was loved.’

Do the grey skies and touches of frost have you dreaming for brighter, warmer days? Why not give yourself something to look forward to with our Open Gardens Annual Pass! Our 2023 Open Gardens season begins in April and runs through to September with 14 beautiful Sussex gardens to enjoy. The Open Gardens Annual Pass is a fantastic way to enjoy all the gardens, with great perks too. The pass makes a lovely gift for a friend or family member, or a well-deserved treat for yourself! For just £40 you will be entitled to entry to all the gardens and a free hot drink at each one. Many of the gardens will feature live music, stalls, refreshments, talks and more. You will also receive a monthly e-newsletter with facts and information about the upcoming gardens, plus offers and tips! To purchase your pass, visit our Open Gardens webpage, stwhospice.org/opengardens, where you can also find a full list of the gardens taking part, or call 01323 434224.

To purchase a leaf, flower head or butterfly by Direct Debit, contact Jenna Stringer on 01323 434216 or email jenna.stringer@ stwhospice.org. You can also contact Jenna if you already have a dedication on the tree and would like to change to Direct Debit.

Volunteer to patient Maria Louka has been a supporter of St Wilfrid’s Hospice since she took part in the Jim Jam Walk in 2010. Over the past 12 years she has continued to take part in events, enjoyed coffee and cake in The Street Café and became a volunteer in 2019. This year, however, Maria has needed support from the hospice herself after she was diagnosed with cancer in the spine.

‘I had always appreciated the work of the volunteers when I visited the café with my friend, so once I had retired, I decided to apply. I was a Host on the Inpatient Unit at first before moving to the Welcome Point during the pandemic,’ Maria told us. ‘My favourite thing about volunteering is engaging with people. I get to know the patients and their families and try to keep their spirits high, even if it’s just by making them a cup of tea.’ Maria was devastated when she had to stand down from her role in November 2021, but with support and guidance from the Therapies Team, she is getting closer to her goal of returning.

‘I received my diagnosis in April. I was in hospital at the time and bumped into a couple of the hospice Nurses. They recognised me and got in touch with the Physiotherapist, Joe, on my behalf. ‘Joe visited me for an initial assessment. He sent me some seated exercises and organised for a firm chair to sit on at home. Jane, the Rehab Assistant, has been visiting me too and we’ve been working on walking up and down the steps outside of my front door. They were both surprised to see how quickly I progressed after just a couple of months. The pain had stopped me from being able to do the things I enjoy, so I am very grateful to Joe and Jane for all their help with regaining some mobility.’

The power of music The St Wilfrid’s Choir is open to all, whether you have a connection to the hospice or not. Dinah is a member of the choir and has shared what the group means to her. ‘2018 was a challenging year for me. Allen, my kind and loving partner, became a hospice patient. We spent three weeks staying in the hospice, but Allen’s wish was to die at home, so he was supported there by the Community Nurses. Life after his death was difficult. I received bereavement support from the hospice and my counsellor suggested I joined the choir. 14

‘Stepping back into the hospice was nerve wracking. As a non-singer I wasn’t sure what I was thinking! However, I felt welcomed by all and was soon singing for the first time in 40 years. I realise now I had taken the first steps on my healing journey.

I still feel way out of my comfort zone at times, but who knows what the future will bring!’ The choir meets on Thursday from 5.30 to 7pm upstairs at the hospice. Each week, members meet from 4.30pm to socialise and have a cup of tea. The drop-in rate is £10, advanced payment is £7 and everyone is welcome to come and listen. stwhospice.org

Thank you to everyone who raised money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in 2022. Your support makes all the difference!

Look what you’ve done!

People

As a charity, 70% of our funding is donated from supporters like you. Here are a few of the fantastic fundraisers in 2022.

Kerry’s sunshine moments

When Kerry Knight’s husband Shawn was diagnosed with kidney cancer Kerry expressed her emotions through poetry. On the fifth anniversary of Shawn’s death, in June 2022, she published a book of her work called ‘Sunshine Moments: Poems In Grief’. For every copy sold, Kerry donated £1 to St Wilfrid’s. After selling her 100th copy in September, we were delighted to welcome her to the hospice to say thank you. ‘When Shawn was admitted to the hospice a weight was lifted off our shoulders. The children and I have received so much support, so we wanted to give something back,’ she said. In April, Kerry will be walking 50km in five days to reach her £5,000 target for St Wilfrid’s.

The Chris Wyatt Memorial Ride

The third annual Chris Wyatt Memorial Ride took place in August, raising over £9,000. Chris’ family have raised over £34,000 in his memory to date. Chris was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 57. He died at home exactly a year later under the care of the hospice. The following year, in 2020, the first Memorial Ride took place. Several family members and friends cycled 100, 50 or 30 miles, starting and finishing at Shinewater Park in Eastbourne. The event has grown each year, with around 80 people taking part in 2022. ‘The amount we’ve raised could cover a Nurse’s salary for a year! Dad would be completely humbled, but it’s our way of saying thank you to the hospice,’ Natalie said.

‘The exceptional care highlights why fundraising is so important’ In October, John Cockram took on the Hever Castle Commando challenge. John did the challenge in memory of three friends: Greg Flynn, Kenneth Emmins and Kevin Key. All died at St Wilfrid’s and John raised over £700 in their memory. ‘I have always been aware of the hospice, but after seeing the exceptional care my friends received it highlights why fundraising is so important. The commando run was tough, but it was a fantastic day, and the support was amazing.’ John during the event

Running in memory of David

In October, Jack Matthews ran the London Marathon in memory of his brother David. He recalls his experience. ‘Sunday 2nd October was an incredibly emotional day, when I was given the honour of representing St Wilfrid’s Hospice in the London Marathon. I finished in a time of 3 hours, 49 minutes and 36 seconds – a 33-minute personal best, but this was never about time. ‘I chose to run the marathon for my brother David, who was cared for by St Wilfrid’s in 2016. The hospice’s support was fantastic, and they even allowed David to get married to his fiancée Emily while he was there, which goes far beyond what could be expected of anyone. I wanted to raise money for St Wilfrid’s as a way of saying thank you. ‘Over 100 donations raised over £2,600 for St Wilfrid’s to continue the amazing care they provide, and this motivated me to give it everything. I would like to thank everyone for the donations, messages and advice. I would also like to thank those who came all the way up to London to support me and cheer my name.’
