All-City News

Congratulations to the students participating in All-City Honor Choir this year! Delfino Cervantes, Mario Clavel, and Gabriel Weller will be singing in the tenor section. Reina Gallero and Nhi Nguyen made the ensemble as altos. The All-City concert will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 7:00pm at North Salem High School. The choir, band and orchestra will all be performing at the same concert.

Letter From Our PrincipalBulldog Families

I need to tell you how proud I am of your kids! They are working so hard this year. With the new common core state standards our students are reading and writing more than ever-especially writing. This is a struggle for some as they work to meet these increased expectations. We know that nothing will prepare students for high school, college and the work place more than being proficient writers and readers. Please ask them about what they are doing in class. I am proud of the way I see students taking care of the little things. An example is in the lunchroom where many staff have commented on how well the students are doing. They raise their hand to be excused, pick up their trash and they are respectful waiting in line. I am not sure if that translates to them keeping their room clean at home but they are doing well here! I am proud of our attendance. So far we are on track to improve our attendance for the third year in a row. Thank you for sending your students to school even when they may not feel like it. (We have added some helpful tips for parents regarding attendance that you will see later in this newsletter). I would still like your help with our first period tardy issue, but even with that we are seeing a reduction in tardys overall. I am proud of our new advisory program and the way students are responding to it. This is a new program and a required class for all students which meets twice a week for 30 minutes. Here are some of the things that your student has done in advisory this year. ;;Learned how to take Cornell Notes, set and revise academic goals and set and revise behavior goals. ;;Completed a learning styles and a career interest survey. ;;They have discussed the value of education and how it impacts career earnings. ;;They understand the importance of participating in extra-curricular activities. ;;Using their binders, they have worked on organization skills and talked about time management . ;;Students reviewed their personal data and identified where they were on the path to graduation. ;;Students started to create a 6 year plan taking them through their senior year of high school. I am proud of the way so many students are realizing their own need for extra help. Last year, getting students to attend 7th period was a struggle. They did it but not willingly. This year is different. 7th period is starting to become part of the culture of our school. I won’t say everyone is thrilled to attend but I do believe that students are starting to realize that this is not punishment. It is to support their growth and staff are there to help. However, even with our best efforts, not all students are taking advantage of the support. Parents, if your student is not doing well (D’s and F’s), they need to be spending time after school or during lunch getting help. Please talk to your student. If they are not attending school regularly, getting extra help, or if they have missing work, they are falling behind. It is as simple as that. This means they have to put in extra effort to catch up. Please restrict your child’s access to technology (XBOX, etc), playing after school with their friends, watching TV, until they prove they are getting their work done. Use Intouch or email teachers to confirm the work is handed in. I do this with my own children. Our goal at Stephens is for every student to leave here on grade level. The stakes are high and the statistics are clear. Students who do not enter high school on grade level will have a difficult time and are much more likely to drop out. As the new year starts, I am looking forward to more proud moments with your children. They are doing a great job, working hard and learning what it means to be a successful and productive student. Tengo que decir que estoy orgulloso de sus hijos! Están trabajando muy duro este año. Con los nuevos estándares comunes de estado centrales nuestros estudiantes están leyendo y escribiendo más que nunca-especialmente escribiendo. Esta es una lucha para algunos ya que trabajan para satisfacer estas expectativas crecientes. Sabemos que nada prepara a los estudiantes para la escuela secundaria, universidad y el lugar de trabajo más que ser lectores y escritores competentes. Por favor preguntarles sobre lo que están haciendo en clase. Estoy orgulloso de la manera que veo a estudiantes cuidar las cosas pequeñas. Track Registration

Track registration starts in March and is open to all grades. Students can pick up a sports packet in February in the main office; the cost is $45. Physicals are required for 7th and 8th graders. If you have questions please contact the school at 503-399-3442.

When my kid

won’t come to school, what can I do as a parent?

Some parents have reported doing the following: • Get help from another family member, neighbor or friend to help get them out of bed and bring them to school. • Take all electronics, books, whatever away. Move them to a friend’s house or lock them in your trunk and take them to work. Remove them from the premises. • Some phone service providers will turn off your child’s phone at a designated hour. This may help with the late night texting. • Be sure to go to bed at an appropriate time on Sunday evening. Monday is the day with the highest absenteeism. • Support your children with a healthy bedtime by keeping the house quiet after certain hours. • Do not allow students to spend the night at their friend’s house on school nights. • Talk to your child's teachers and other school personnel about the problem. Report to the school attendance staff/Guidance Counselor, that your child is choosing to cut school. • Don’t try to have a serious discussion in the morning about the getting up problem with a child who won’t get up. That’s not the time they can learn new problem-solving skills. They’re too busy justifying their excuses and fighting with you. That problem-solving discussion should take place later. • Is it workload, peer pressure, or your child’s individual way of coping? It’s vital for parents to look at your child’s situation closely: does he require more sleep or is there a social problem? • Is this a kid who lacks sufficient problem-solving skills to help him solve the problem of getting out of bed when he doesn’t want to? • Sometimes kids are afraid of a bully, and actually, avoiding school is one of the first signs that your child maybe bullied, so be sure to investigate that possibility and ask the question. • When you've identified a problem, you might need to seek appropriate help for a underlying issue. Treating that problem, whether it's anxiety, depression, oppositional defiance disorder or something else, often will require the assistance of an outside counselor. • If getting up becomes a chronic problem, parents have to accept that there are consequences imposed by the school and society, not just by the family. You should let the child be late and not give an excuse. • Write a note saying, “He wouldn’t get out of bed, please hold him accountable for his lateness.” If that means a detention, that’s ok. You should not protect your kids from consequences.

When you student says they are ill … • Students should only miss school if they have a fever above 100.5° or are vomiting or have diarrhea. • Healthy Kids and Keizer offer free to low cost health insurance. If you need information on this, call the school. • When in doubt, send your student to school. We will call you if they are truly ill. • We have a school nurse who can help develop a health plan for students who are injured or have chronic illnesses.

Asegúrese de investigar esta posibilidad preguntándole a su estudiante. • Ya que halla identificado el problema con su estudiante, necesitara buscarle la ayuda necesaria. Tune in for school news; please do not call the school! As the threat of snowy and icy weather approaches, parents and students should listen to local radio and television stations to learn of school closures due to inclement weather. By 5:15 am, district officials make the decision to close or delay the start of all or selected schools. The school district will provide school closure and delay information to the following news media for broadcasting starting at 6 am: The media will mention the district only if there is a delay or closure. If you do not hear any information, it is safe to assume district schools are open or have resumed their regular schedule.
