Editor’s Note: It was shortly after PAP Dr. Muriel Sukumaran sent in this message for the District Souvenir through Dr. Rekha Sukumaran, her daughter, on the 25th of October, that she passed away peacefully at her residence in Trivandrum on the 1st of November, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Inner Wheel. The District Chairman Suriaprabha Rajasekharan was in Trivandrum at the time of Dr. Muriel Sukumaran’s passing, for the Chairman’s official visits to the clubs in the city. It was indeed fitting that a stalwart of the Inner Wheel movement in India, who in her daughter’s words, “Loved Inner Wheel”, was bid a final farewell by the District Chairman herself. May this last message of hers written for our Souvenir continue to resound in our hearts, as her legacy lives on. May the soul of the dear departed rest in eternal peace. A Eulogy to PAP Dr. Muriel Sukumaran follows in these pages. District Chairman Suriaprabha Rajasekaran pays her respects on behalf of District 321 5 The District Souvenir

DHANALAKSHMI ASOKAN PAST DISTRICT CHAIRMAN PAST DISTRICT CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE WARM GREETINGS! My hearty congrats to Editor Maya for her efforts in releasing this beautiful District Souvenir at our District Conference SURYAVANSHI. Wishing our District Chairman Suria and the Executive Committee members a successful District Conference. Students are the pillars of our society and we need to lay a strong foundation for these pillars for the society to stay strong. My passionate service is towards these young children, imparting Moral Stories and motivating them to practice Yoga. In this fast paced world with nuclear families children often have no one to narrate stories to them. The plight of downtrodden families is unimaginable as they have a hard time making ends meet, leave alone story time. In recent times the school curriculum is devoid of value education , constantly keeping children under pressure to excel in academics. I strongly believe violence can be brought down by imparting sound moral values when young. A sound mind dwells in a sound body. Both these feats can be achieved through Yoga. Social media keeps children glued to smart phones resulting in deterioration in vision, posture and tranquility. Yoga helps to correct all the above and it is the need of the hour. Let us try to inculcate these values in children in our vicinity. Yours in Inner Wheel Friendship. Aishwarya R., Aged 22, Mahila Mandiram School, Trivandrum. Non-Competitive Entry. Wisdom in Controlling Expenditure Plan, choose and spend on basic items , like items of need. Draw a clear demarcation between items of need and luxury. Develop the attitude of recycling. Be creative. This taught me to differentiate between superficial buying and real buying, reduced expenditure and often did away with superficial expenditure completely for which I was thankful later.Wait a little before you buy something expensive. Often if it is not a real need, the desire for it disappears in a week or ten days. Your child sees you doing this consciously, and will learn the valuable habit from you. Writing accounts is a great habit. It holds an inventory of purchases to improve your wisdom on managing your future expenditure. Money grows when you give. Think about it! As of now, I will stop right here. There is wisdom in not testing everyone’s patience too. Wisdom is the silent underlying thread inviting you to look at it closely, before you embark on different actions demanded by life. It is always present, always wanting to guide you. We often overlook it and are guided by our overwhelming emotions. Some of us are wise after an incident as we analyze the happenings. Some of us don’t care to analyze as we are so prompted by strong emotions to speak and act. To such, wisdom doesn’t matter and funnily enough some think wisdom is only for the old! I remember saying when I was in my 30s, in a letter to my father. “I wish wisdom came when one was young!” I was referring to my teens and my father laughed and told me I should write about it when I met him next. Of course, I didn’t pay heed to him. Well, here are some nuggets - just some. Social Wisdom Never not be friendly with someone just because someone else told you to. It is the unkindest thing to do.Do not judge people on the basis of what you have heard about them.Speak to them directly and find out for yourself. Don’t be angry with anyone for their behavioral limitations. Help them if possible. If someone is unhappy show compassion; if someone is happy, enjoy their joy. If someone shows enmity, ignore and move on. Life is meant to be happy. Make a conscious choice to be happy - that should be the Dharma of life. BRIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME! AND A BONUS ON BAKING TIPS TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME: Update the feature wall - neutral and white walls are the best choice. Upgrade your furniture – choose less bulky, light furniture. Fix mirrors near light sources - helps to brighten up the space by making it feel bigger. Add metallic décor as it reflects light and adds more energy to the room. Include bright artwork to cheer up the space – but do not overdo it! Change the lighting and fixtures – choose according to the rooms and their use to create a better ambience and warmth. Furnish with new accessories. Place rugs and carpets to bring in the coziness. Upgrade the curtains – and go for light fabric to add warmth. Keep your windows and the glass clean. Keep the space beneath your furniture free, so as to let light pass through. Rearranging furniture helps in giving a new look to the space. Bring in more greens and flowers! BAKING IS CHEMISTRY!: Each measure and step is crucial – read, understand and follow a recipe properly. Use good quality ingredients, in the right measurements. Use ingredients at appropriate temperatures as it will affect the outcome – unless otherwise mentioned, use room temperature eggs and butter. To get eggs to room temperature – run them under warm tap water or crack them open into many small bowls before beating. Buy new baking soda and baking powder every 6 months and store yeast in the freezer – this helps to retain their lifting power. Baking on a rainy day is risky – the weather, humidity, and temperature effects the dough/batter to rise. Overbeating and under beating can affect the texture of the batter. Always grease your pans and then dust with flour, so that, once cooled the cake slips out easily. You can Grease and sugar the pan for an extra crusty outside.. Scrape your bowl with a flexible spatula to get a better consistent batter, as the important ingredients might be at the bottom of the bowl. Add a pinch of salt to the sugar syrup before soaking the cakes enhances the sweetness and flavour. Never frost cakes or cookies before it cools fully. To lessen the stress, bake in advance and store the cakes in the fridge (cling wrap). Bake and frost cakes, on the previous night of the order so that the cakes get set well. And finallly, bake happily and patiently to get good bakes! Mood matters! AR. RAJI VIPIN Editor, IWC of Vakathanam 17 The District Souvenir CLUB EDITOR’S TIPS

The District Souvenir MESSES OF MADURAI TO TICKLE YOUR TASTE-BUDS First published in “Places of Interest”, EBookllet, IW District 321, 2020 SIVABALA THILLAIRAJ IWC of Madurai City “ You don’t need a silver fork to eat good food” — Chef Paul Prudhomme The local cuisine of Madurai is a gourmet’s delight. An array of “messes” and “tiffin” joints attract foodies from far and wide. Chandran Mess, Kumar Mess, Amma Mess, Konar Kadai and Murugan Idly Kadai, to name few, provide tasty, fresh food, with emphasis on“fresh”. All ingredients, be it fish, poultry, meat or vegetables are bought on a daily basis and food is never carried over to the next day. These food joints do not cook fancy, complicated masterpieces, but simple, yet sumptuous menus which tempt the taste buds with their “home-cooked” aromas. A darshan with Goddess Meenakshi, followed by breakfast at Murugan Idly Kadai is quite the norm for visitors to Madurai, creating a well-rounded trip of culture, tradition and cuisine. The piping hot idlis and dosas with a wide spread of chutneys and podis make even the smallest eater reach out for a little more. Recently, at a wedding reception, the bride, as she introduced us to her groom, told him, “ We should visit Madurai. The food there, is to die for”! AMMA MESS: “Home to the bone-marrow omelette, the Mudhal Mariyaadai meen kuzhambu (fish curry), the Pallipalayam kozhi (chicken curry), and countless other delights, the eatery has carved out a place for itself in the hearts of two generations of meat lovers. In his awardwinning book ‘Kalli Kattu Itihasam’, one of the poems written by Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu was about a type of chicken rasam, and that’s how they have the ‘Kalli Kattu Koli Charu’. Other favourites are ‘Burma Meen Kuzhambu’, a pomfret fish curry made from a special recipe Manickam, the founder brought back from Burma, and the ‘Idicha Naatu Kozhi Roast’. The rabbit roast and prawn roast are also popular with the customers. The Biriyani menu has not just the usual suspects like chicken, mutton and sea food, but also pigeon-meat and rabbitmeat”. Source: Ramnathan S., thenewsminute.com Editor’s note: Origins of the Word: A mess is a designated area where military personnel socialize, eat and (in some cases) live. The root of mess is the Old French mes, "portion of food”. FEATURE 19
A TEACHER WRITES... MAKING FINE CITIZENS OF TOMORROW. SATHYA KUPPUSWAMY President. IWC of Rajapalayam Sanjeevi Hills. FEATURE There is joy in expression. I am sure everyone will agree that teachers are the backbone of any educational institution. I have been a teaching faculty for a decade and a half and I strongly believe that the 2 most important qualities of a FINE teacher are : ☆ Passion for the child and ☆.Passion for the subject, with equal intensity .We need to constantly expand our horizons of learning. In fast changing environments such as those we confront today, every child must be taught to care for others in moments of joy and despair. When we ride in comfort, in well -upholstered cars on well-paved roads to school, we need to think of those children with no footwear who walk several Kilometres on unmade pathways to reach their schools. We teachers need to tirelessly strive and stretch our arms towards perfection, ensuring that all those passing through the portals of our institutions will grow to be true citizens of India. The institution which provides such broad-based and relevant education would definitely culminate in the attainment of the fullest natural growth of the individual, leading to a balanced and harmonious life. LEENA JAYAKUMAR District Treasurer THE DISTRICT TREASURER’S REPORT REPORT OF ACTIVITIES Here is a brief report of a DistrictTreasurer’s duties: District Bank Account: The Current account in the name of INNER WHEEL DISTRICT 321, INDIA bearing account number 35860435738 was transferred from State Bank of India, Palayamkottai Branch to the State Bank of India, Marudhankuzhi branch Trivandrum, on 4th July 2022 with the opening balance Rs 7698.26. In the wake of resignations from the New Gen Clubs, I feel its not the number of clubs but quality membership in the existing ones that matters. Last year-end, our membership was 1,834 and now it has reduced to 1,730. There have been 194 resignations and only 90 new members have joined our fold. This will keep increasing and hopefully by the year end we will have a considerable increase in members. Every year, there is a big rush to open new clubs. Many a time we find that these clubs especially the New Gen clubs find it difficult to cope up or THE DISTRICT EO’S REPORT EXTENSIONS OFFICER REPORT OF ACTIVITIES PDC VILASINI BEN ROY District EO perform their duties as most of the members are students. They often do not have the time and many get dispersed after a year for higher studies, marriage or career. The mother clubs do help and motivate them for a few years but we still find members resigning or lacking the will to lead the club. Therefore I feel instead of starting a New Gen club in an area which is already filled with many Inner Wheel Clubs, trying to identify our District 321’s Geographical boundaries, seeing where there are no clubs and using Rotary in that area to begin a new Inner Wheel club with matured members will be worthwhile. Hope we can do so this year. 24 The District Souvenir Jessica Joseph Morris [Daughter of Sunandha Morris, IWC of Trivandrum Blossom] Student, B.Sc Animation & VFX . Yazhini J., Aged 10, Chennai. Grand-daughter of PDC Dhanalakshmy Ashokan, IWC of Theni. “Famingos are gregarious birds. Adults are coloured Pink or White and the younger ones are Grey. A variety of habitats are used by flamingos: mangrove swamps, tidal flats, and sandy islands in the intertidal zone. I have depicted them in a lake”. Migratory birds, including Flamingos flock in large numbers at Point Calimere Bird and Wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu's Kodiyakarai. Thousands of migratory Australian Flamingos flock to Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi, between January and March. They also flock to the Pallikarnai Marshland, Perumbakkam Lake and the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary in Chennai. THE BEAUTIFUL CITIES OF DISTRICT 321 SPREAD ACROSS THE GEOGRAPHICALLY & HISTORICALLY RICH REGION OF SOUTHERN KERALA AND TAMIL NADU 32 The District Souvenir Nestled in the southernmost tip of the Indian Peninsula, District 321 is bound by the beautiful beaches of the Arabian Sea and the sun-kissed waters of the Bay of Bengal, with backwaters and plains, valleys and hills.
The pictures are from various sources on the internet. Kanyakumari, the confluence of waters marks District 321s southern tip. It is not surprising then that our district has the distinction of being the confluence of 2 states, 2 languages – Malayalam and Tamil. We are enriched by a shared history with Sri Lanka, when we were part of the undivided District 320, which later bifurcated to form District 321 as we know it today. Siberian cranes are becoming extinct. There are only 3,200 left in the world and they have not been sighted at their once favoured spot, Bharatpur National Park Rajasthan since 2001. ‘Omid’ (Hope) is the last remaining bird from the western population which prefers to spend winter s in Iran and, previously, Rajasthan. - The Economic Times, April 2020 33 The District Souvenir
Ramnad, an ancient land from where Lord Ram is said to have set out for Lanka, Rameswaram, the place of pilgrimages since ancient times - at its end is Dhanushkodi, and the Palk strait that connects to Sri Lanka. Nagercoil, at the southern tip of the Indian peninsula is spread out in the beautiful terrain between the Western Ghats and the Arabian sea. Marthandam, with its alluring Jain rock monuments, Trivandrum, the land of Lord Padmanabhan on the western coast. Quilon, the ancient sea port on the Arabian Sea, with a rich colonial past, Punalur and Chavara. Ambasamudram, the land by the waterfalls, at the foothills of the western ghats on the banks of the Tamirabarani River, Valliyoor, by the Kodumudi Dam, named after Valli, the consort of Lord Murugan. Tirunelveli, the city of the Nellaiappar Temple, the royal shrine of the ancient Pandyas, Tuticorin, the pearl city by the waters of the Bay of Bengal, Sivakasi, the “Little Japan”, the city of firecracker and printing industries, Pathanamthitta, the land of forests and the Sabarimala pilgrimage center. Virudhanagar, the land of Sriviliputhur with its ancient Andal temple, Megamalai tiger reserve, Rajapalayam, best known for its aristocratic breed of hounds. And, along the intricate network of the famed backwaters of Kerala we have Alleppey, the Venice of the East, crisscrossed by waterways, Chenganur, Mavelikara and Cherthala, Kottayam, the land of letters, latex and lakes, home to Cheriapally, one of the oldest churches in the state, Vakathanam and Changanssery, Kanjirapally. We have the ancient capital, Madurai, the city of the Meenakshi Temple, Dindigul, nestled in the plains, Theni, the cardamom city, and Chinnamannur.
