The Oakleaf Note from the Principal

Dear Parents, I have spent a lot of time in classrooms since the beginning of the school year. Each time I visit a classroom, I marvel at how the staff at Thoreau will learn a new teaching strategy and take the risk to try it out. The best part is that they have asked me to come in and observe them teaching something new! I can’t tell you all the great lessons I have observed in classrooms! This year we have learned a new reading strategy called Close Reading. When I asked a student in Gina Hodgson’s classroom what close reading was, she said, “It’s like a shovel and dirt. First you take the shovel and move the dirt a little and then you dig deeper and deeper”. Her definition is right on. Teachers have students go back into the text several times to really dig deeper into the reading and to provide evidence about questions they are asked. Teachers might have students read the text independently the first time, the teacher may read aloud the second time, the third time students may paraphrase paragraphs, answer text dependent questions or answer constructed response questions. We only began to learn about close reading in early October and already many staff has implemented this strategy in their reading blocks. Ask your student what they know about close reading. One of the shifts of the new Common Core State Standards is increasing rigor and relevance in reading. Another shift is for reading, writing, speaking and listening to be grounded in evidence from the texts and to provide regular practice of academic vocabulary with complex text. The strategy of close reading allows for students to acquire new and higherlevel skills in reading that will allow students to master grade level text and be college and career ready. Close reading helps the teacher to provide all students the opportunities to master higher level text and has been a great strategy for teachers to learn about the new common core standards. As a principal, I have been enjoying observing the close reading lessons in the classrooms. Thoreau’s Leadership Team Thoreau’s leadership team is made up of staff representation from all grades and areas of the school. The team meets monthly to discuss Thoreau’s academic progress and to keep the school on track with its School Improvement Plan. The team also looks at school data regularly and makes decisions about professional development for the staff. Here’s what the team is working on now: 1. The need to address the Language Common Core Standards more effectively. Team members are looking for tools to teach grammar and conventions and ways to embed these standards into our Writing curriculum. 2. Teams are being asked to reflect on independent reading practices. Specifically thinking about how to better support this student task. 3. The team also reviewed current behavior data and our Indistar goals. Indistar is a tool used by Focus Schools. The tool gives us objectives of effective schools that we use to set goals for ourselves.

Thoreau School Endowment Projects Receiving Funding 2013-14 $500 each - Funds will be used toward the creation of a 3rd and 4th grade Listening Center to increase independent study during the daily language block, using the Daily Five reading program. The listening center will use high-quality, highinterest audio books to engage students in listening, in solo and group independent study. $800 - Funds will be used to hold a series of events to celebrate Earth Day throughout the month of April. This includes Environmental Options Day and a variety of contests and challenges on the Earth Month theme. In addition, professional staff from nature centers and organizations will bring novel programming to the school over the course of the month. $100 - Funds will be used toward a 3rd grade Terrace Town project. For this project students study architecture, Madison history, urban planning, sustainable communities, goods and services, and interactions with physical environments before constructing a town that is brought together at Monona Terrace with the projects from other participating schools. $300 - Funds will be used toward I Am, a social and self-esteem building program for 3rd and 4th grade girls. In monthly meetings, 5th grade girls returning from last year's program will serve as group leaders, helping the students participate in community service projects that require creative thinking and promote self-esteem. $942.15 - Funds will be used for a tablet-based technology program to promote several kindergarten programs, including handwriting; writing, illustrating, and recording narration of stories; recording a reading log; reading to a peer or adult; and creating a personalized virtual bookshelf.

Thoreau Safety Patrol Information Who: Thoreau Safety Patrols are 5th grade student volunteers wearing mostly yellow or a few with orange belts. What: The Patrols are intended to provide a presence in school hallways and the upper playground. Patrols also offer a visual reference of where the cross walks are surrounding Thoreau where drivers should be aware of pedestrian traffic. When: Safety Patrols are on duty 15 minutes before school and 15 minutes after school. Where: Outdoor patrols are located on the upper playground. Street Safety Patrols are on both sides of the crosswalk behind the school on Cherokee Drive, down the street on both sides of Cherokee Drive at Nakoma Road and around the corner from school on both sides of Yuma Drive at Cherokee Drive, and Cherokee and Chippewa. Patrols are also located in the hallway by the office and the LMC. Why: Safety Patrolling offers a volunteer opportunity for students looking for a heightened level of responsibility around school. The positions create a safer environment in and around Thoreau for children and families on school property and crossing the street to and from school. Saturday, February 15 th Optional activity for Thoreau 4th and 5th grade students to attend a workshop with the Wisconsin Singers and John Jacobson. John Jacobson is the “double dream hands” guy! Cost is $20 and students must sign up before Thanksgiving break. Watch your child’s backpack for a flier with more details. March 5 - April 9 – Figureheads! The Figureheads are a group that use hip hop to promote critical thinking and collaborative skills. They will be working with all K-5 students on Wednesdays from March 5-April 9. I believe they will kick off their residency with a concert and will end with a final concert featuring the kids.
