06 ULIS Innovation (UI) Center established; students’ innovation and start-up activities promoted; “ULIS Festival for Innovation, Research and Entrepreneurship - ULIS Fire Day 5.0” organized On January 21st, 2022, ULIS Innovation Center was established, contributing to a stronger promotion of innovative and start-up activities of ULIS students. One of the highlights is the successful organization of ULIS Fire Day 5.0 which took place at the end of May 2022 with many exciting activities such as music festival “Fiery Youth”; finale of “Creative Startup Competition 2022”; opening of the ULIS IT Support Corner; experiential activities, discovery and innovation, etc. 33 innovation projects implemented in the academic year 2022-2023 in all departments of the University In the academic year 2022-2023, ULIS has developed and implemented 33 innovation projects in the form of a competition that showcased ULIS spirit of constant innovation, as while helping launch many initiatives to promote activities at the school.

07 Innovation in the organization of ULIS annual conference of the 2021-2022 academic year, whereby all the reports were presented in theatrical form (on June 28th-30th, 2022) On June 28th-30th, 2022, the annual conference of the 2021-2022 academic year took place in Ha Long. This year’s conference continued to show the spirit of innovation, creativity and digital transformation right in the way it was organized. In particular, all the 6 reports were presented in a theatrical form with 6 creative impressive performances. All the procedures for launching a new bachelor’s course on Transnational Culture and Communication completed to be ready for enrollment from 2023; training programs adjusted; and economic-technical norms for training programs established in preparation for autonomy In 2022, ULIS promoted the development and opening of a new training program on Transnational Culture and Communication. Through many stages of evaluation, the program has been approved by VNU and is being prepared by the University to start enrolling students from 2023. One of the other remarkable points in this year’s training is that ULIS has adjusted the existing training programs and completed the construction of economic-technical norms for training programs in preparation for autonomy.

08 ULIS Annual National Conference “Researching and teaching foreign languages, linguistics and international studies in Vietnam” (UNC2022); International Graduate Research Symposium (IGRS2022); the 13th Asia–Pacific Consortium of Teaching Chinese as an International Language (APCTCIL 13) ULIS Annual National Conference “Researching and teaching foreign languages, linguistics and international studies in Vietnam” (UNC2022); the International Graduate Research Symposium (IGRS2022); and the 13th Asia–Pacific Consortium of Teaching Chinese as an International Language (APC-TCIL 13)” are the three largest conferences organized by ULIS in 2022. Quality reports, well-known delegates, a large number of presenters attending and presenting made an exciting year of research at ULIS. Celebrations: 20 years of implementing the fast-track program in English Language Teacher Education, 28 years of teaching Korean language, 30 years of teaching Japanese language, 30 years of teaching German language, and 60th anniversary of the Faculty of French Language and Culture The year 2022 marks many milestones in the academic affairs at ULIS. The school has organized many anniversaries such as 20 years of implementing the fast-track program in English Language Teacher Education (2002-2022), 28 years of teaching Korean language (1994-2022), 30 years of teaching Japanese language (1992-2022), 30 years of teaching German language (1992-2022), and the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of French Language and Culture (1962-2022). Those are opportunities to look back on the development of the units, as well as opportunities for generations of ULISers to meet, exchange and connect with one another.

09 Institutional quality accreditation of ULIS-VNU, second period (2017 – 2021) completed with highly positive feedback On October 12th, 2022, ULIS was officially certified as satisfactory to the educational quality standards issued by the Minister of Education and Training with an overall average score of 4.3/7. Accreditation was carried out by the External Assessment Team from the Education Accreditation Center - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. The successful accreditation has proved that the training quality of the University in the period 2017-2021 met the standards specified in Circular No. 12/2017/TT-BGDĐT. Congresses of all Party cells for the term 2022-2025 and the 21st Congress of ULIS Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union for the term 2022–2024 successfully organized On September 6th-16th, 2022, 22 Party cells under the Party Committee of ULIS held their Congresses for the term 2022 – 2025. The congresses reviewed the implementation of the Resolutions of their previous Congresses for the term 2020-2022; determined the direction, goals and tasks of the term 2022-2025; and organized self-criticism and criticism of the Party cells for the term 2020-2022. On April 22th, 2022, the 21st Congress of ULIS Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth for the term 2022–2024 was successfully organized. The congress focused on assessing the work of the Youth Union and youth movement of the University in the term 2019 - 2022; set out directions, tasks, goals and action plans of the Youth Union’s work and youth movement in the term 2022 - 2024; and elected the Executive Committee of the Youth Union for the term 2022 - 2024.

10 ULIS Music Festival on the 72nd anniversary of the Vietnamese Students’ Day (January 9th, 1950 - January 9th, 2022) and the 2022-2023 Hello ULIS Program (October 22nd, 2022) The Ministry of Construction approved the 1/500-scale detailed construction plan of ULIS – VNU campus in Hoa Lac In 2022, two very important events for students, ULIS Music Festival on the 72nd anniversary of the Vietnamese Students’ Day (January 9th, 1950 - January 9th, 2022) and the 2022-2023 Hello ULIS Program (October 22nd, 2022), were organized. Many carefully prepared performances were presented, showing professionalism from individuals, units at ULIS and partners, alumni, parents, famous singers and DJs. The two events also inspired more contributions to the school’s scholarship fund to support students. On October 28th, 2022, the Ministry of Construction approved the 1/500-scale detailed construction plan of ULIS – VNU campus in Hoa Lac. According to the plan, ULIS campus is located in the northern part of the area.

11 TRAINING Onsite training resumption The Covid-19 pandemic’s impact on the organization of training activities at ULIS caused them to be conducted online. However, since February 2022, teaching and learning at all levels has returned to the face-to-face format. The busy classrooms and lecture halls show that teaching is now back to normal, yet the application of information technology continues to be deployed more strongly. Organization of training at all 4 grades at UMS The school year 2022-2023 is the first year that UMS provided training at all 4 grades, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Experiencing some initial difficulties, the graduation of the first cohort of students will help the school in quality accreditation. Issuing exam format for assessing foreign language proficiency from level 2 to level 5 based on the 6-level foreign language competency framework for Vietnamese in Russian/Chinese/ French/German/Japanese/Korean/Arabic/Thai/Laos: On May 1st, 2022, ULIS promulgated the exam format for assessing foreign language proficiency from level 2 to level 5 based on the 6-level foreign language competency framework for Vietnamese in Russian/Chinese/French/German/ Japanese/Korean/Arabic/Thai/Laos, including exam structure, description of exam questions and scoring schemes. This exam format will be used in foreign language proficiency tests organized by the University.

12 SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Scientific conferences held In 2022, ULIS continued to strengthen science and technology activities such as organization and co-organization of a number of conferences and seminars: ULIS National Conference “Researching and Teaching Foreign Languages, Linguistics and International Studies in Vietnam” (UNC2022); International Conference “13th Asia–Pacific Consortium of Teaching Chinese as an International Language (APC-TCIL 13)”; International Conference “Teaching and Researching French and Francophone Culture”; International Conference “Teaching and Learning Japanese in Vietnam from a Multi-dimensional Perspective”; 2022 International Graduate Research Symposium; Seminar “Exploiting and Developing Open Learning Materials in Foreign Language Teaching”; Seminar on teaching and learning English in the digital world; Seminar on “Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages in the Context of International Integration”, etc. ULIS staff also regularly attended and contributed papers at national and international conferences. Six issues of VNU Journal of Foreign Studies published In 2022, VNU Journal of Foreign Studies, an official and independent scientific publication of ULIS - VNU, published 6 issues, including 2 in Vietnamese and 4 in English.

COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT MOUs signed with domestic and international partners: In 2022, ULIS continued to cement its cooperative and developmental activities with different institutions and departments within and without the country, including University of Zurich (Switzerland), Vietravel Airlines, ATF Financial Investment Joint Stock Company, Hebei Foreign Studies University (China), Ha Thanh Secondary and High School, Association of Small and Medium Enterprises in Ha Noi, Nguyen Trai University, VNPT Hanoi, etc. These activities not only expand the University’s partner network but also create better opportunities for students to earn international degrees, study abroad, do internship abroad, secure scholarships, etc. ULIS, the destination for many special guests: As a foreign language school, ULIS always receives great attention from institutions, diplomatic agencies, international organizations and large corporations. In the past year, the University was privileged to welcome President of the International Resource Exchange K. Douglas Erdmann, Director of the Regional English Office (US Embassy) Jerrold Frank, Ambassador of Egypt Amal Salama, Chief of Staff of the Korean Command Cho Woo Jin, President of the Sejong Foundation Lee Haiyoung, Director of Francophonie University Foundation - Asia Pacific (AUF) Laurent Sermet, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia Mohammed Ismaeil A Dahlwy, Ambassador of Austria Hans-Peter Glanzer, Deputy Ambassador of Morocco Ahmed Ait Aissa, etc. Whether coming to visit, exchange, attend a ceremony, or give a lecture, all the guests expressed their love toward ULIS. Providing social services: Clearly stated in the University’s Mission, ULIS attaches great importance to community services and considers them its social responsibility. In 2022, the University cooperated with partners to implement tasks under the National Foreign Languages Project, assist English teachers in Ba Vi district middle schools in their professional development, enhance pedagogical competence for English teachers in Lang Son Province middle and high schools, organize foreign language proficiency assessment exams, among others. 13

ULIS students honored with a number of domestic and foreign awards: In 2022, ULIS, FLSS and UMS students secured a number of awards such as third prize at VNU-HCM Excellent Youth Union-Students’ Association Leader Competition 2022, first prize at Chinese Orthography Contest 2022, Outstanding Ambassador Award at VNU-level Reading Ambassador Contest 2022, winner of Finnovation Rod Competition 2022, first prize at the 21st Chinese Bridge Contest, third prize at the 5th “Path of Light” contest, absolute victory at the 2022 International Russian Olympic contest, champion at Tell Me By Your Voice 2022, first prize at district-level student singing contest in the school year 2022-2023, consolation prize at the 24th Euréka Awards, consolation prize at VNU Startup Idea Contest 2022, first prize at Hosei Cup in 2022, second prize at National Reading Culture Ambassador contest in 2022, gold medal at Asia Pacific Music Festival, first prize at VNU’s Got Talent 2022, etc. STUDENTS AFFAIRS Support for talented students: ULIS students are not only good at foreign languages but also very talented. In order to help them develop their talents, have a playing ground to assert themselves, and find jobs, the University organized numerous support activities in 2022 such as presenting (in-budget and off-budget) scholarships; introducing student exchange or overseas study programs; organizing internship program in Japan; implementing job sharing activities; building a system of university, high school and middle school clubs; organizing talent competitions; organizing Student Ambassador programs and implementing cooperation programs with localities; launching the Youth Union and Students’ Association movements; organizing cultural experiences; implementing training courses for learners, etc. 14 *Organization of the Topik Korean Language Proficiency Test: in 2022, ULIS started organizing the Korean Language Proficiency Test (Topik). With an experienced team who have carried out important examinations such as VSTEP, JLPT and HSK, the Test was always administered in a serious, thoughtful and professional manner.

Activities of international students: As a foreign language training university, ULIS is a “residence” of many international students, including students of exchange programs (ULIS and FLSS students also attend exchange programs in the University’s partner institutions), full-time undergraduates, students taking part in Vietnamese language and culture short-term courses, international students studying Vietnamese to get certificates, and so on. International students can participate in many cultural exchange programs, anniversaries and sightseeing activities while studying here. 15 Active participation in community services: Volunteering is one of the highlights in the youth movement at ULIS. In 2022, ULIS students continued to contribute to the community through the following activities: blood donation, contribution to building roads and cleaning martyrs’ cemeteries, paying tribute to heroic martyrs, presentation of gifts to families of preferential policies, presentation of scholarships to underprivileged students, volunteering for the 31st SEA Games, participating in the project “Volunteer Education – JUMP”, etc. *ULIS Ambassador: “ULIS Ambassador” is an experiential program for students of the University. The program not only helps students develop skills, connect with teachers and lower-class students at the old high schools, but also fosters a love for ULIS in students themselves. ULIS Ambassador journey 2022 witnessed the participation of 660 Student Ambassadors and 259 Junior Ambassadors.

OTHER PROMINENT ACTIVITIES Trade Union activities: In 2022, ULIS Trade Union had many activities to take care of its members’ life. The Trade Union organized activities to celebrate many special anniversaries, donate to support students with difficult circumstances, carry out health check for staff, offer uniforms for staff, organize the football tournament “ULIS - Welcome summer 2022”, organize a circus show for children on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival, hold exchanges with Prof. Truong Nguyen Thanh with Mind-Body KIDAO, celebrate Vietnamese Teachers’ Day on November 20th , 2022, win the third prize at the VNU Trade Union football tournament in 2022, organize a video competition contest “My teachers”; participate in the VNU’s Contest “Songs to President Ho Chi Minh” and win one second prize for the group performance and one first prize for the individual performance; among others. Many collectives and individuals have been recognized for their achievements at the Conference to review the work of the VNU Trade Union in the academic year 2021-2022. Organization of a number of big festivals: In 2022, ULIS organized numerous major festivals such as ULIS Connection Day 2022 in Hoa Lac, ULIS Book Fair 2022, Junior Ambassadors Day 2022, Korean Culture Week - Sejong Culture Academy in 2022, ULIS FIRE Day 5.0, “ULIS HOA CA” Concert, “Fiery Youth” Concert, Class Monitors Connection and Training Day 2022-2023, ULIS Job Fair 2022, Korean Cultural Festival – ULIS Korea Day 2022, etc. These festivals are opportunities for generations of lecturers, staff, students and alumni to exchange and connect with one another. At the same time, they help promote the languages and cultures of different countries. 16

FOCAL TASKS IN 2023 17 (1) Training: effectively implementing university training programs issued in 2022; renovating graduate training activities; accrediting training programs in English Language Teachers, German Language Teachers, Japanese Language Teachers, Korean Language Teachers and institutional accreditation of UMS; recruiting students for the transnational culture and communication program. (2) Research: improving the quality of conferences, seminars and symposia within the framework of UNC2023; Establishing 2-3 strong research groups at university level on the basis of the communities of practice (COP); increasing investment in innovation, scientific research and start-up activities of staff and students. (3) Student Affairs: supporting and serving learners with the aim of creating opportunities for practice, internships and paid employment; and supporting learning, professional development, professional skills and soft skills. (4) Cooperation and Development: implementing the strategy of community services for the period 2022-2027; optimizing the operational efficiency of the network of domestic and foreign partners. (5) Finance and Facilities: renovating the facilities of blocks A4, A5, parking areas of the French Compound and Startup Incubator; planning to utilize the school’s facilities at the initial stage in Hoa Lac; diversifying revenue sources to supplement funding for training, science and technology activities, supporting learners and increasing incomes for staff. (6) Institutional governance: strengthening the effectiveness of legal work and internal supervision; continuing to promote digital transformation; fostering the implementation of innovation projects at all units; establishing 01 enterprise under the University in the field of tourism associated with culture and foreign language education.

MY BELOVED ULIS 20 LECTURE ROOMS The University has over 200 high-standard lecture rooms, which are arranged at 5 lecture areas fully-equipped with the system of air-conditioners, projectors and speakers. Particularly, a lecture hall cluster is equipped with 400 laptops and interpretation booths, and a rich library with more than 35,000 books. Simultaneously, the cluster can respond to an examination of up to 6,000 candidates. In addition, the lecture halls of ULIS can meet teaching and learning requirements after business hours. ACCOMMODATION Consisting of 1,040 rooms in an area of 4,680 m2, ULIS dormitory accommodates FLSS and ULIS students, international students and other students of VNU. The dormitory is located inside the campus with an open space, conveniently close to all sorts of services, including restaurants, shopping malls, markets and others. C3 LIBRARY The University’s library is located in Block C3 of the French Compound. ULIS Library is among those having the richest foreign language resources in the area with over 50,000 foreign language resources of all kinds. HOMIES - OPEN SPACE ULIS currently has 7 Homies at the Sports complex, blocks B3, B2, A2, A1, FLSS and C3; and 2 open spaces at FLSS and block B2, covering a total area of more than 1,500m2. These are areas built for the needs of learning, reading, relaxation and group activities of ULIS staff and students. With modern and elegant design, these areas have been frequented by all ULIS-ers.

21 SPORTS COMPLEX Put into operation since 2015 and renovated in 2021, ULIS Sports Complex satisfies all the demands for holding competitions and popular sports such as 7-player football, volleyball, badminton, yoga, martial arts, and other collective sports. Particularly, a gymnasium with a capacity of 1,500 people and a 2,000m2 outdoor court will be the ideal places to organize large-scale events. ULIS – SUNWAH BUILDING Located in a prime location near VNU entrance, ULIS – SUNWAH Building is modernly designed and fully equipped for such purposes as conferences, seminars, exhibitions and others. With the capacity of one large hall (180 seats), one large conference room (80 seats), two small conference rooms (30 seats), and VIP lounges, ULIS – SUNWAH Building is a wonderful venue for numerous types of activities, events, festivals, parties, and so on. T-ZONE The beautiful cafe located in the area near B3 is a place to relax and chat for staff and students. FREE DRINKING AREA Currently available in the vicinity of Blocks A1, B2 and C3, this drinking water is completely free of charge for all ULIS staff and students. The water here is well purified to ensure hygiene and safety. ULIS STUDIO Block C5 in ULIS premises has been refurbished as a modern studio to serve online instructions and build digital learning resources for the University.
