Irrigation systems with recirculation of nutrient solution for vegetable production in the greenhouse is an alternative to reduce problems of water shortage and the pollution of aquifers. In the present work, two irrigation systems (surface and subirrigation) with recirculation of nutrient solution, and three sowing densities (12, 16, and 24 plants m−2) were used to study growth, nutrition, and production of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The nutrient solution, different for the vegetative and the reproductive stages, was prepared with commercial fertilizers. The frequency of daily irrigation varied between the systems. Growth rate, height, and total dry matter production of the plant 64 days after emergence (64 dae) were initially greater under subirrigation, situation which was reversed at the end of the crop cycle (300 dae). Plant yield under subirrigation was 34.5 kg m−2, and under surface irrigation 37.8 kg m−2. In the latter treatment the largest number of fruits per square meter and the best fruit quality were achieved. At the end of the harvest period, the concentration of Ca, Mg, P, Mn, and Zn in total dry matter was highest in the subirrigation system.

INTRODUCTION INTRODUCCIÓN

V

egetables are produced in greenhouses in the northern desert zones and in central México, where water shortage limits irrigation farming; mainly tomato, pepper, and cucumber are cultivated. The cultivated area in greenhouses has increased from 350 ha in 1997 (Steta, 1999) to 748 ha in 2001 (AMPHI, 2001). This is due to the demand for good-quality vegetable products from the U.S.A., Canada, and Northern Europe, mainly in the winter months, when the conditions of light and temperature restrain agricultural production in those countries. The technology utilized in the production and the different types of greenhouse structures are imported from Israel, Spain, Canada, and Holland (Steta, 1999).

E

Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivated in greenhouse yields 80 t ha−1 at a density of 9 to 10 plants m−2 (Maroto, 1989). In Italy, the production from 44 hybrids was, on average, 41.5 t ha−1, when fruits are harvested green, and 36.3 t ha−1, when fruits were harvested ripe. Harvesting green fruits promotes and stimulates further flowering and fruit set, and when fruits are harvested fully mature, foliage senescence is favored, diminishing its activity (Miccolis et al., 1999). In Israel, mean yield is 16 kg m−2 in Mazurca variety, grown in red low density volcanic rock (tezontle) with a substratum containing three doses of Ca2+ (50, 100, and 150 mg L−1) and with three irrigation frequencies (3, 6, and 12 irrigations daily) (BartTal et al., 2000). In Germany, yields of 20 kg m−2 were obtained, using tensiometers to determine when to irrigate, and 17 kg m−2 employing a method based on solar radiation (Paschold and Zengerle, 2000). Greenhouse production technology has increased the yield per unit area. Nevertheless, in order to maximize the production, large quantities of fertilizers and chemicals have been applied, which –for lack of irrigation strategy– originate inadequate water use and release nutrients, such as nitrates and phosphates, into subterranean waters (Klock-Moore and Broschat, 2001). An alternative for reducing problems of aquifer contamination and water shortage is to change the conventional system of open irrigation, for subirrigation or a system of surface irrigation with recirculation, that is, to collect and reutilize the nutrient solution (James and van Iersel, 2001). This change of system modifies the distribution of soluble salts in the substratum; in the subirrigation system, the flow of water and nutrients in the plant containers goes from the bottom to the top; then, the lack of lixiviation in the system favors the retention of ions in the growth medium, the formation of salts being promoted (Cox, 2001). The excess nutrients, not removed by lixiviation, modify the growth environment of the crops, increasing electric conductivity (CE) in the solution, and the salts may damage the plant (James and van Iersel, 2001). The surface irrigation and subirrigation systems have different patterns of moistening the substratum, where the crops develop; these patterns modify the nutrient supply to the plant roots. There is little information about nutritional demands and bell pepper crop management under hydroponics. Therefore, in the present study, the California Wonder 300 variety was employed to evaluate the effects of subirrigation and surface irrigation on bell pepper production and quality with respect to growth, and nutrient concentration and accumulation in the plant.

MATERIALS AND METHODS Bell pepper cv California Wonder 300 was planted in September 1998 in a greenhouse, located in Tizayuca, State of Hidalgo, México,

with a nutritive solution in closed circuit system. Red low density volcanic rock (“tezontle”) was employed in the following percentages and diameters: 24%> 11.4 mm, 43% between 4.8 and 11.3 mm, and the remaining 28% less than 4.75 mm. The experimental design was completely randomized with an incomplete factorial (two factors) structure of treatments, and with four replications. One factor consisted of two irrigation systems, and the other, of three sowing densities (Table 1); the experimental unit was 2.9 m-2. Description of the nutrient solution and the irrigation system The nutrient solution was prepared in a tank of 15 000 L capacity, using commercial fertilizers as nutrient sources. The quantities applied, those used by Morales4 in 1999, varied in the two phenological stages of the crop (Table 2). During the vegetative stage, the renewal of solution was made every 25 d, and in the reproductive stage, every 12 d. The solution was renewed 16 times during the crop cycle. The nutrient solution was distributed in the experimental units with a 1 HP electric pump and 1.27 cm diameter galvanized pipes. The number of irrigations varied according to the system and the development of the crop (Table 1). The subirrigation system consisted of four beds of 7.20m length, 0.80 m width, and 0.32 m height. The nutrient solution was collected in a tank, located in the center of the plot, and distributed toward both sides through PVC pipes of 5.08 cm diameter, with 1 cm diameter holes every 5 cm, at the bottom of the bed. These pipes were used both for irrigation and to drain the surplus solution. Subirrigation was applied, flooding the substrate up to 2.5 cm below the surface of the substratum, and then immediately drained. In the surface irrigation, the same number of plots was used as for subirrigation; 19 L plastic containers were employed. In each plot, a 1.27 cm diameter PVC pipe was placed at 20 cm above the containers, connecting a micro-tube to the PVC pipe for applying the solution to each of the containers. The irrigation was applied for 10 to 15 min. In both irrigation systems, the nutrient solution was drained by gravity using pipes, which returned the surplus solution to the storage tank.

During the crop development, the date of emergence, flowering, beginning and end of harvest was recorded, evaluating plant height and dry matter, accumulated in leaves, stems, and fruits. Mineralization of the plant samples to determine P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cn, ZN, Mn, and B was made by means of humid digestion, with H2SO4, HNO3, and HCLO4 (Jones et al., 1991), quantifying with an emission spectrophotometer (ICP-AES Plasma 96 VARIAN) (Alcántar and Sandoval, 1999). Total-N was determined by the micro-kjeldhal method (Etchevers, 1988)5. Harvesting began on March 13, 1999, and at intervals of 15 to 30 d, ten yield evaluations were made. In each evaluation, fruits were classified in three categories: Quality1: solid fruits, well shaped, without scars, diseases, insects, or bruises, with fruit diameters >7.62 cm, and >8.89 cm length; Quality 2: fruits with characteristics similar to the previous one, diameter between 6.35 and 7.62 cm, and length between 6.35 and 8.89 cm; Quality 3: the rest of the harvested fruits (De Vilmorin, 1977). For each category, total fresh weight, mean weight, and number of fruits per square meter were determined. The statistical analysis was made with SAS (1989) version 6.12, for an incomplete factorial design, in which the interaction of the main effects was not studied (by design, the interaction could not be estimated). In some cases, where sampling was carried out on different dates (several harvests on the same experimental plot), sampling was considered as a conceptual division of the plot, analyzing the information as split plots. The means were compared with the Tukey test (p≤0.05).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION In those cases where the analysis of variance of the factors, as well as their interaction with sampling (days after emergence: dae) were significant, the discussion only focused on the interaction.

Growth rate and plant height in the evaluated phases showed significant differences, due to the effect of the irrigation system (Table 3), except the growth rate at 225 dae. The plants grown with subirrigation were the tallest; in the flowering stage, growth rate was higher in subirrigated plants than in those grown with drip irrigation. At 157 dae, growth rate was higher in plants under surface irrigation, and at 225 dae, differences were not significant. Planting density significantly modified growth rate and plant height (Table 3). In the flowering stage, the plants under greater density had the lowest growth rate and height. At 157 dae, there were no significant differences between growth rate and height due to planting density; at 225 dae, the analysis of variance indicated significant differences; plants with the highest density were the tallest.

Total yield and harvested fruits The accumulated yield per date of evaluation changed (Tukey, p≤0.05) according to the irrigation system and planting density (Table 4). In subirrigation , the harvest began on March 10th (154 dae), 17 days before in the surface irrigation system. Therefore, the yield with the former system was considerably larger than that with surface irrigation, in the two initial evaluations. Afterwards, until the 6th harvest (May 22nd), the

accumulated yield was not different in both systems, and in the last harvests, surface irrigation significantly surpassed the yield obtained with subirrigation. The initial differences observed in yield are attributable to higher growth rate and greater plant height under subirrigation since the phase of flowering (64 dae) (Table 3), due to the substratum, with nutrient solution being more uniform and having greater volume than in the surface irrigation system, stimulating root activity. However, increasing frequency of daily irrigations during the reproductive stage (Table 1), the supply of nutrients with four irrigations a day was probably not enough to sustain the accelerated fruit growth of the subirrigated plants, thus eliminating the initial advantage of this treatment (Figure 1). But with eight applications of surface irrigation a day, nutrient distribution improved, also favoring plant production. The accumulated yield showed significant difference between the systems, and in both was superior to the results reported by Maroto (1989) and Bar-Tal et al. (2000), who produced in greenhouse 80 and 16 kg m−2 of bell pepper. In the first harvests, yield was lower for a density of 24 plants m−2; at the third harvest, there was no significant difference due to plant density; from the fourth evaluation with 24 plants m−2, the maximum accumulated yield was obtained, significantly greater than with the other two densities (Table 4). The difference in accumulated total yield between both systems was significant and less than 10%, that is why both systems were considered effective for bell pepper

production. Nevertheless, subirrigation has the advantage of facilitating the handling of nutrient solution and avoids the blocking of the micro-tubes by salt accumulation, which occurs in surface irrigation. The distribution in the three qualities of total yield and total number of harvested fruits was significantly different, due to irrigation systems and densities (Table 5), with the exception of yield of Quality 3 and the number of Quality 2 fruits. The yield of Qualities 1 and 2, obtained with the density of 24 plants m−2, was significantly different from the one obtained with intermediate and low density (Table 5). The greatest yield in Quality 3 was obtained with the intermediate and the highest density. The number of harvested fruits of Quality 1, at the density of 24 plants m−2, was significantly larger than that collected at intermediate and low density (Table 5). The largest number of Quality 2 and 3 fruits was obtained with intermediate and the greatest densities. The greatest yields and number of fruits of the highest quality were obtained at 24 plants m−2 density. Under field conditions, highest fruit quality and weight are achieved at the first harvests, diminishing in later harvests; this situation did not occur in this study since, under hydroponics, continuous uniformity of growth conditions is achieved (FAO, 1990). In Quality 1, mean weight per fruit at the first harvest (March 10th) was 112 g and increased to 188 g at the last harvest (August 28th); for the same dates, fruits of Quality 2 varied from 65 to 133 g, and those of Quality 3, from 41 to 71 g per fruit, respectively (information not shown). 4500.0 4000.0

Production and distribution of dry matter Dry matter (DM) production at the different phenological stages did not show significant differences because of irrigation system or planting density, except that observed at 300 dae (Table 6). DM accumulated in the phenological stages showed significant differences, due to the irrigation system, only at the beginning of harvest (151 dae) and at its end (300 dae). Planting density did not cause significant differences. At 151 dae, the largest amount of dry matter with surface irrigation was obtained, opposite to what happened at 300 dae. The significant differences of total DM, accumulated at 151 and 300 dae, are related to dry matter produced by fruits. DM production in these organs was also different between irrigation systems: at the beginning (151 dae) and at the end of harvest time (300 dae) (Figure 1). In subirrigated plants, fruit dry matter was 804.7 g m−2 at the beginning of harvest, increasing to 2545.9 g m−2 at the end. Under surface irrigation, MS production for the same stages was 467.6 and 3137.5 g m−2 (Figure 1); the highest values of total dry matter and that of fruits at 151 dae were obtained in plants with subirrigation, and at 300 dae, in plants with surface irrigation. This response of the bell pepper plant to the irrigation systems is attributed to the frequency of daily irrigations. The initial stimulus to rate and accumulation of MS in subirrigated plants was affected during the reproductive phase, when one additional irrigation per day was applied. This probably was due to the fact that the nutrient supply in the extra irrigation did not satisfy the demand of the vegetative and reproductive system of the plant at the beginning of fruit formation, or because at higher irrigation frequencies at the reproductive stage, plant roots

were subjected to conditions of temporary anaerobiosis, which affected their normal activity. However, specific studies are required to understand the response rate and production of DM, determined in this research. The effect of planting density did not significantly modify the rate of dry matter production and its accumulation in the plant (Table 6). Nutrient concentration The concentration of P, Zn, and Mn in the total dry matter of plants, developed with the subirrigation system, in the last phase of harvest (300 dae) was greater than that corresponding to the surface irrigation system (Table 7). The availability of these nutrients increases when conditions of anaerobiosis, which could be present every day in the subirrigation system during short periods, develop in the root environment (Carlson, 1981). These conditions cause the lowering of the pH of the nutrient solution, absorbed by the substratum. The nutrient solution was prepared with Zn and Mn in the form of Zn2+ and Mn2+ (cations), which do not change due to a more acid pH; nevertheless, the fertilizers used to provide macro-nutrients, probably contain Zn and Mn in chemical forms (particularly their oxides), which solubilize when the pH lowers (Carlson, 1981), favoring absorption and concentration, that sometimes exceed the requirement of the crop, to the point of causing toxicity. In the present study, visual symptoms of toxicity in the foliage were

not observed; there was, however, a decrease in yield in the subirrigation system compared to surface irrigation (Table 4). An acid pH favors the H 2 PO− 4 form to be predominant (at pH 5.0, this form occurs at 100%), which is preferred by plants (Marschner, 1995). But, at higher pH, part of this form changes to HPO24− , less absorbed by the plant. Therefore, under the conditions of this study, a major P absorption in the subirrigation system was expected. The condition of anaerobiosis might be ascribed to an excessive frequency of irrigations (four irrigations a day), and to the fact that the moistening volume is much greater in the subirrigation system than with surface irrigation.

The concentration of cations, other than Mn and Zn, such as K, Fe, Cu, and B (Table 7), was not significant in the same system and evaluation phase, which implies absence of antagonism between both cation groups. The concentrations of Ca and Mg in dry matter of plants grown under subirrigation were greater than those of plants under surface irrigation at 300 dae (Table 7). This indicates that in the subirrigation system the access of these nutrients to the root, which occurs through mass flow, was favored by the greater moistening volume of the nutrient solution. The effect of planting density on nutrient concentration in total DM was not significant.

CONCLUSIONS Growth rate, height, and total dry matter production of the plant at the beginning of the study (64 dae) were greater in the subirrigation system. This situation was reversed at the end of the crop cycle (300 dae). Yield and number of harvested fruits, initially (from March 10 to 27) were larger in the subirrigation system, but in the last four harvests (June 25 to August 28) the opposite happened. Yield of subirrigated plants was 34.5 kg m−2, and with surface irrigation 37.8 kg m−2. In the latter system, a larger amount of fruits harvested per square meter, as well as the best fruit quality were obtained. Concentration of Ca, Mg, P, Mn, and Zn in total dry matter at the end of the harvest period was greater in the subirrigation system. —End of the English version—
