May 22, 2016 The Most Holy Trinity

The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity that we celebrate today is a model for our relationships with one another in our church. Gathered in the Holy Spirit at the Father’s invitation, let us pray today in Christ that we may learn to emulate the love and joy of the Trinity in all our relationships. COMPLETE RELATIONSHIP 

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY   Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most confounding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to understand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our children, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-andtake, annual rituals, and the lifechanging moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity.

What is striking about these readings is that each is incomplete. None of them, in describing creation (Proverbs and the Psalm) or the acts of the Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit (Romans and John), offers a complete picture of the relationship between the Holy Trinity and us. What they offer is a description of a moment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our relationship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is promised, what has been given. A memory of eternity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trinity.

INCOMPLETE ANSWERS  Today's reading from Proverbs describes the power of beginnings, when what is most beautiful and central in our relationship to God is a hope in our minds and the mind of God. When there was nothing but our relationship, there was still power enough to generate an entire world, a heaven and an earth. The psalm that we sing today tells about the power of possibility and responsibility. We are responsible to safeguard what has been created through our relationship.  The Letter to the Romans reminds us that we are not alone in this relationship. We endure what seems unendurable because of the hope and grace that are part of our relationship with our Savior and the Holy Spirit. Finally, John emphasizes that not even death itself will end our relationship with the One whom we love and who loves us. Our relationship with God--Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit--is one in which all is possible, all is given, and all is lived fully. This is the Holy Trinity. Make a gift that will make a difference. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ‐ SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, "reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity" (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God's self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God's most important attributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as "Merciful and Kind," believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. La fiesta de la Santísima Trinidad que celebramos hoy es un modelo para las relaciones entre nosotros en nuestra iglesia. Reunidos en el Espíritu Santo por la invitación del Padre, oremos hoy, en el nombre de Jesucristo, que podamos aprender a imitar el amor y la alegría de la Trinidad en todas nuestras relaciones. LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD Hoy celebramos a la Santísima Trinidad, uno de los misterios de nuestra fe que es motivo de gran confusión. A través de este misterio experimentamos nuestra relación con Dios: creador, Salvador y Espíritu Santo. Esta relación no es fácil de entender o describir. No se hace más clara a través del análisis. Su complejidad refleja la complejidad de nuestras relaciones. Entendemos nuestras relaciones con nuestros esposos, nuestros hijos, nuestros padres y nuestros amigos sólo a través del dar y recibir a diario, los rituales anuales y los momentos de cambio de vida que compartimos. Entendemos nuestras relaciones sólo como las vivimos. Las relaciones que tenemos con aquellos que amamos y que nos aman nos sostienen a través de una vida incierta y difícil. La lectura del hoy de libro de los Proverbios describe la fuerza del principio, cuando lo que es más hermoso y central en nuestra relación con Dios es una esperanza en nuestras mentes y en la mente de Dios. Cuando no había nada sino solo nuestra relación, todavía había suficiente poder para generar un mundo entero, un cielo y una tierra. El salmo que cantamos hoy nos dice acerca del poder de la posibilidad y responsabilidad. Somos responsables de salvaguardar lo que ha sido creado por medio de nuestra relación. La carta a los romanos nos recuerda que no estamos solos en esta relación. Soportamos lo que nos parece insoportable a causa de la esperanza y la gracia que son parte de nuestra relación con nuestro Salvador y con el Espíritu Santo. Finalmente, Juan enfatiza que ni siquiera la misma muerte terminará nuestra relación con aquel al que amamos y que nos ama. AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA ‐ SOLEMNIDAD DE LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD   En la Bula papal Misericordiae Vultus, 2, el Papa Francisco dice que la misericordia "es la palabra que revela el misterio de la Santísima Trinidad". Pues la misericordia es cómo Dios viene a nuestro encuentro; misericordia es la ley fundamental que nos ayuda a reconocernos como hermanos y hermanas; misericordia es el puente que conecta a Dios con la humanidad, abriendo nuestros corazones a la esperanza de ser amados por siempre pese a nuestras ofensas. La revelación de Dios hacia nosotros es un don de vida, un amor compartido de la Trinidad de personas que nos acercan más a Dios en amistad y comunión.
