ffilillll0l{ m The Malaysian Martial Arts Academy aims tu prurnote Taekwondo that is based on humanity, morality, wisdom and faith, thus helping to build a better and peaceful Malays'ia. Taekwondo students, undergoing severe training, share a mutual hardship and learn to communicate with the obvious result that racial barriers are stripped away. There is little time for petty prejudices while sharing the camaraderie and spartan training atmosphere of Tae' kwondo. Therefore the harmon ious exchange of Taekwondo between races promotes a better understanding between people which in turn evolves into respect; for without it a successful human relationship

i'Dear Diary,
Today I went out with my friends, fellow classmates and to answer our Mater's call. "C-harlie,'was there so were all our school teachers. My batch - the first batch included 5 visually handicapped boys who simply refused to be left out of the fun. We enjoyed a more or less follow-the-leader game throughout the 4 -mile circuit, I hope to take part in the Schoolmates

The Staff Group plays an important role in fostering friendamong fellov'r teachers who would otherwise, to all intents, 'ernain strangers to one another if they were just to 6ome to the ;drool to work. The Staff Group brings teachers together in play rd discards the anonymity that usually pervades big organizations. :directly, professional experiences and problems are often dis:-csed and shared among the teachers whenever they meet through

Farewell Dinner for Mr. Khoo Eng Cheang who has since retired from teaching and for members who have since been
transferred to other schools washeld in February. g
23 pupils were awarded Staff Scholarships, valued at $5/per month each, for the year. Financial assistance was also given to 4 deserving pupils to help them pay up their examination fees. These money for the scholarships and the examination fees came from generous contributions of teachers.
A party of 18 teachers (male & female) took a trip down to Teluk Anson to participate in a series of games against $e Staff of St. Anthony's Secondary School. For outdoor enthusiasts, a picnic was held at the Penang Port Commission Bungalow at Batu Ferringhi. 3,
The sports minded teachers participated in a series of tournaments namely Badminton, Chess and Volleyball. More tournaments are e>rpected to follow before the year is out.

OIA ACTIVITIES It was way back in lg24 that a group of dedicated dx-Xaverians got together to found the Old Xaverians, Association' The main aim of the Association being to promote closer understanding and to foster a spirit of mutual help amongst ex-Xaverians, teachers and also ex-students of other Christian Brotheis'schools. However, others are also welcomed to join as Associate members. Our Founder President was Lim Cheng Ean and other prominent pioneers then included Chee Swee Ee, Lim Huck Aik, Cheah Cheng Poh, Leong Lean Oy,irthur de cruz, Cheah Seng Khim and Frank Reutens.
' The present.club house, our very own, is situated at 50, Perak Road, Penang. Among the facilities offered include Billiards, a Library and other indoor games like Carroms, chess, draughts and miniature-football. Badminton and table tennis practices are also hi:ld regularly. As a result of some renovations carried last year, the club now has a furnished guest ioom which is a congenial place to meet old colleagues and friends in order io exchange views and news. Ours is an Association which offers recreation and relaxation in the form of sports and indoor games. However, it is to the future that we look, when with enough funds, we can provide more and more facilities for ihe members. 1974 is of special significance to oXA. lt is 'Golden Anniversary'year and as we celebrate this auspicious occasion, we would like to welcome Brothers, teachers and pupils to partake in the activities which will climax in a 'Golden Anniversary' dinner, in December. Join the OXA, help build the OXA to make and of society in general.

The realisation of the need for more Break-monitors to cope with the increase. in number of the student body led to a general reorganisation of the Board in early 1974. The original number of 18 duties a day were considerably increased to 30. Even though the Boaqd started off the year with only 17 members, all round efficiency was duly shown. The first intake of Probationary Junior Break-monitors from form four came only in March, and it was indeed a great relief to the then functioning members. With the second intake made in July, the Board at present
hasamembershipof40;thelargestsofarinitshistory. 1g74 saw another great change; the Lower Secondary Board bf Break-monitors was offiiially incorporated into the Upper Secondary Board. This will enable the two Boards to have a common system of duties. The Lower Secondary Board is being run by Mr. Colin Rozells with the help of the chairman, vice-chairman and 2SeniorBreakmonitors from Lower Six. This year is indeed a great start for the future of the Board. But it is only made possible by the Break mo^nitors themselves, who sacrificed io much of their precious time.to perform their assighed duties with efficiency. Special mention should be given to the Council of Senior Break-monitors which had help in a greatway in the-reorganisation, modification and running of the Board.

"With best wishes from Tan Sri Professor
Hamzah
ffir-Die ArcEOS HEMANIAil It is generally
agreed
that there is no other
group of students in the school that is contributing more to it than the Board of Librarians. However, for all that the Board has done it is hardly noticed. True, the Board does not bring glory to the school but imagine the amount of time and effort each individual Librarian sacrif ices. The members of the Board are not asking for praise, but at least, teachers and students should recognise
the amount of work
done.
The library is now open from 7.30 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. during exam periods. The librarians repair a hundred books or so a day in addition to processing of new books.
As the library is student-run, the library has a homely and friendly atmosphere and students generally like to come to the library. Lastly the Exco.
wishes to thank Rev. Bro. Charles, Mrs. Justina Wong,
the Advisorof the Board and all those who have helped in one way or another'

The present exco took over in July 1973. We were rather short of funds
for our activities at that time so we started off with a sale of book-marks and homemade jam. This was followed by a Christmas Card Competition which unfortunately was a failure since the entries were of a rather low standard on the whole.
ln 1973, we were lucky in that a iam factory agreed to donate one year's supply of iam which was given together with the free bread to our poor students daily. This year, the school was in full swing organising a collection for the Little Sisters of the Poor and for the poor students of our school. Our President went on the PA to urge the students to donate to this charity. Out of this collection, the SAG received $600. Some of this money was put to use in buying much needed books for our poor students. At about.this time also, we launched an appeal for old books and uniforms. The response was good. Since then, we have already handed over our posts to the Lowers who joined us in May. We would like to thank Mrs. Ho and Miss Joseph for their help and advice in the running of our society. We would also like to thank Brother Charles for all the encouragement and help he has given us in the past years and of course, our thanks also go to the members of the SAG and all those who have in one way or another helped to make the SAG a success'

Once again the SXI Chess Club has had another successful year. During the MSSM Chess Tournament held in December 1973, Yeo Khee Huat represented Penang in the individual event while Ooi Gim Eng and Lim Swee Aun played for the state team which emerged champions. To top it all, our adviser, Mr. Kok Weng Fai was chosen to be the coach of the state team. ln the 1973 SXI Chess Tournament. Ooi Gim Eng took the lnternational Chess title while Chin Kong Yooi and Lim Chee Seong emerged
champions in the Chinese Chess and Draughts sections respectively. The year 1974 started off with the transfer of our dedicated adviser. Bro.John Sureck. The club is gratefulfor his guidance, encouragement and unfailing assistance. ln place of him the club welcomes Mr. Lim Zong Hong.

The Board is always open to suggestions, criticism, general opinions and the like. Students tend to forget that the XN is very much a student' run society and not confined to the big noises like the Editor and his side-kicks. Debates were the main preoccupation of the LDDS in 1974. The first series of debates were the inter-form four class debates to decide on a school debating team. Tajul Arus, Kum Wah and Soon Ee represented the school in the Annual Ouadranglar Meet in June and the debate with Sekolah Menengah lbrahim (Sungei Patani). On both occasions SXI emerged the winner. ln the lnter-House Debate, Champions were Bartinus House. During the course of the year, play-reading sessions and talks
were held. The members persevered to put up "King Lear" in June.
