Dear Brothers and Sisters: Back in the middle ages, a dispatcher went out to determine how laborers felt about their work. He went to a building site in France. He approached the first worker and asked him “What are you doing?” “What? Are you blind?” The worker snapped back. “I’m cutting these boulders with primitive tools and putting them together the way the boss tells me. I’m sweating under the blazing sun. It’s back-breaking work, and it’s boring me to death.” The dispatcher quickly backed off and retreated to a second worker. He asked the same question, “What are you doing?” The worker replied, “I’m shaping these boulders into usable forms, which are then assembled according to the architect’s plans. It’s hard work and sometimes it gets repetitive, but I earn five francs a week and that supports the wife and kids. It’s a job. Could be worse, too.” Somewhat encouraged, the dispatcher went on to a third worker. “And what are you doing?” he asked. “Why, cant’ you see?” said the worker as he lifted his arm to the sky. “I’m building a cathedral!” Now that’s the joy of working. It is also the joy we experience as we honor our parishioners who are 90 years or more of age at this year’s annual Dinner Dance today. Many of them were members of our parish when the cornerstone with the year 1938 was put in place for the present church building. Their sacrifices as well as those of many others made its completion possible. It was a labor of faith and love. As we approach our parish’s 100th Anniversary in 2017, we owe it to them to assure that our beautiful church will continue as a place of worship where their legacy of faith can be handed down to future generations. Please excuse our front entrance to the church. Already the façade has been repointed, cleaned and the scaffold has been removed. Now the new steps are being installed. This project was estimated to cost $160,000 but as is often the case unanticipated costs like the copper flashing to preserve our rose window increased the cost by $16,000. We hope this portion of our renovations will be completed by the end of October. While the outside of our church is progressing nicely the inside has been lagging slightly. Not long ago we learned that before replacing the original leaking pipes of our church’s heating system, asbestos abatement would have to take place. The original estimate of the project, $42,000 was thus increased by $7,000. While removing the asbestos the church hall would not be usable for obvious health reasons. That part has now been completed and the pipes will soon be installed, we hope by the end of October. Until then our church will be less than comfortable. We want to thank you beforehand for your donations, sacrifice, and the patience with cool temperatures. Many have been generous in helping us to make these costly steps. Stewardship Corner:  Church Maintenance Improvement Goals for  2014 

Queridos hermanos, Durante la Edad Media, un despachador salió para determinar cómo los trabajadores se sentían acerca de su trabajo. Se fue a un sitio de construcción en Francia. Se acercó al primer trabajador y le preguntó, "¿Qué estás haciendo?" "¿Qué? ¿Estás ciego?" el trabajador espetó. "Estoy cortando estas rocas con herramientas primitivas y juntándolas en la forma que el jefe me dice. Estoy sudando bajo el sol abrasador. Es un trabajo agotador, y me aburre hasta la muerte. " El despachador rápidamente se fue a hablar con un segundo trabajador. Él le hizo la misma pregunta, "¿Qué estás haciendo?" El trabajador respondió: "Estoy moldeando a estas rocas en formas utilizables, que luego se ensamblarán de acuerdo a los planos del arquitecto. A medida que nos acercamos al centenario de nuestra parroquia en 2017, debemos asegurarles que nuestra hermosa iglesia seguirá como un lugar de culto donde su legado de fe puede ser transmitido a las generaciones futuras. Por favor, disculpe nuestra puerta de entrada a la iglesia. Ahora que han rellenado las juntas de la mampostería y han limpiado la fachada, se ha quitado el andamio. Ahora están instalando los nuevos escalones. Este proyecto se estimó en $160.000, pero como siempre, los costos no anticipados (como arreglar la ventana rosetón) incrementaron el costo por $16.000. Esperamos que esta parte de nuestra renovación se complete para fines de octubre. Mientras que el exterior de nuestra iglesia está progresando muy bien, el interior se retrasó un poco. No hace mucho nos dijeron que antes de reemplazar las tuberías viejas del sistema de calefacción de nuestra iglesia, la disminución del asbesto tendría que llevarse a cabo. Esa parte ya se ha concluido y pronto serán instaladas las tuberías, esperamos para finales de octubre. Hasta entonces nuestra iglesia será menos que cómoda. Queremos darle las gracias de antemano por sus donaciones y sacrificio a este proyecto y paciencia con las temperaturas frescas. Muchos han sido generosos en ayudarnos a cumplir estos proyectos costosos. Que Dios los bendiga por seguir la fe de aquellos que honramos hoy.

LOS HÁBITOS HACEN AL HOMBRE La personalidad se forja con hábitos perfectivos LAS VIRTUDES, CONDICIÓN DE LIBERTAD Sin virtudes, tenemos libertad pero no somos capaces de actuar libremente. En la práctica, la voluntad es habitualmente libre en virtud de los hábitos perfectivos. Este es el sentido profundo de la frase de Schiller: «sólo a través de su costumbre, el hombre puede ser libre y poderoso». El niño que crece aislado en la selva, a los diez o doce años ya carece de capacidad para el lenguaje. La educación de los primeros años gravita sobre nuestro presente y nuestro futuro. Por eso es preciso desarrollar cuanto antes hábitos verdaderamente perfectivos. El que no desarrolla virtudes, vive como un animal, por más que tenga entendimiento y voluntad. Los ha bloqueado. Puede hacer casas o puentes, pero él no llegará nunca ser más, irá siempre a menos. Y esto es posible, porque el hombre es el único animal que para vivir como lo que es (racional, libre) ha de saber que lo es y quererlo prácticamente. Pío Baroja decía que "en la vida sólo existen dos caminos, el derecho y el torcido. Quien toma el derecho ya no lo deja; y quien emprende el torcido, tampoco". Es una exageración. Alguien comentaba esto diciendo que "el hombre acaba por ser esclavo de sus actos, y se comporta como aquel penitente sevillano que introduce el dedo gordo del pie descalzo en los raíles de un tranvía". Es una exageración, porque la libertad siempre existe mientras hay uso de razón. Pero también es cierto que los vicios constituyen una mengua tal de libertad que bien puede llamarse esclavitud, y que las virtudes, en cambio, otorgan una libertad nueva, capaz de dilatarse indefinidamente en su orden. Pero es cierto que sin hábitos arraigados no es posible hacer con facilidad el bien. Las dificultades son demasiadas. Si yo no hago actos de libertad que perfeccionen mi libertad, si no creo el hábito de elegir bien (es decir, de elegir el bien que la razón me indica como tal), estoy eligiendo mal y deterioro mi libertad, mi personalidad, mi dignidad. La virtud permite obrar bien cuando y siempre que se quiere; el incremento de libertad práctica consiste en la acumulación de virtudes. La virtud es el nivel superior de "posesión" (L. Polo). VIRTUD Y LIBERTAD Las virtudes intelectuales, perfeccionan la inteligencia; las virtudes morales, perfeccionan la voluntad libre. Libertad es dominio de sí; ser libre es ser dueño de los propio actos, señor de sí mismo, escoger lo que se quiere escoger, amar lo que se quiera amar, querer lo que se quiere querer. Sin virtudes, no hay libertad práctica sino veleidad: como una veleta que gira en la dirección del viento que sopla, que no se mueve a sí misma, que en el fondo no quiere lo que quiere querer sino el primer bien efímero con que se topa y que - si bien ponderara las cosas - rechazaría sin contemplaciones. La virtud se adquiere como un beneficio añadido al ejercicio concreto de las propias facultades. Es como un premio que la naturaleza se otorga a sí misma. -3-
