Old Testament Scripture Proverbs 15 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness. 3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good. 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit. 5 A fool despises his father’s instruction, But he who receives correction is prudent. 6 In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, But in the revenue of the wicked is trouble. 7 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, But the heart of the fool does not do so. 8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But the prayer of the upright is His delight. 9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who follows righteousness. 10 Harsh discipline is for him who forsakes the way, And he who hates correction will die. 11 Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men. 12 A scoffer does not love one who corrects him, Nor will he go to the wise. 13 A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. 14 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, But the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness. 15 All the days of the afflicted afflicted are evil, But he who is of a merry heart has a continual feast. 16 Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, Than great treasure with trouble. 17 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred. 18 A wrathful man stirs up strife, But he who is slow to anger allays contention 19 The way of the lazy man is like a hedge of thorns, But the way of the upright is a highway. 20 A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother. 21 Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, But a man of understanding walks uprightly. 22 Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established. 23 A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is! 24 The way of life winds upward for the wise, That he may turn away from hell below. 25 The LORD will destroy the house of the proud, But He will establish the boundary of the widow. 26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD, But the words of the pure are pleasant. 27 He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house, But he who hates bribes will live. 28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil. 29 The LORD is far from the wicked, But He hears the prayer of the righteous. 30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, And a good report makes the bones healthy. 31 The ear that hears the rebukes of life Will abide among the wise. 32 He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding. 33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom, And before honor is humility. 1

HERE’S TO YOUR HEALTH

Why Video Calls Wear You Out More Than Phone Calls or In-Person Meetings Back-to-back calls all morning, or all day long is stressful and the technology, while mimicking in-person meetings and get-togethers, is not a perfect substitute. A lot of information we process from people we’re communicating with is nonverbal. Whether it’s a slight nod of the head or a subtle smile, we communicate with one another all the time without realizing it. But when we communicate through video-conferencing tools, many of these nonverbal cues can get lost. You can’t necessarily look over at someone and get a feel for if they’re understanding what’s going on, so that can be frustrating. Eye contact is an important feature of communication. When we establish eye contact, we send signals back and forth that establish attention, interest, and disagreement or agreement with what is being said - what’s known as “gaze awareness.” Trouble is, if you want to make eye contact - or create the illusion of eye contact – while on video, you have to look directly into the camera, which we’re probably not going to do. Even if you’re looking into the person’s eyes, it appears to the other person as if you’re looking elsewhere on their face, so there’s already a disconnect that we may not be aware of, and as with any kind of communication technology, it takes a little time for your words and gestures to reach the other person. “Real time” during video calls actually means a micro delay. During in-person communication, we say something and immediately look at the person’s reaction for feedback. But on video calls, that micro delay is long enough for the other person’s reaction to feel not quite right, there’s kind of a limbo, like, ‘Did I say this right? It takes a split second for information to reach their ears, process it, and then send it back to you - a split second longer than it would in person. In the moment, you may not think about it, over the course of an hour-long call, or a day full of calls, it’s an added stress for our brains. A study found that a delay as short as 1.2 seconds is enough to make your conversation partner appear less attentive, less friendly, and less focused compared with a shorter (or no) delay. Pair these challenges in communication and self-presentation with the standard tech glitches, dogs or kids making noise in the background, and countless other stressors and distractions, and suddenly your brain is overloaded with information. Your brain is like a computer, and just like any computing machine, the brain is only able to process so much information at any given time. If you have many programs open, it’s going to slow down the information-processing capacity of your computer. The result? Fatigue. Meeting fatigue is not a new phenomenon, while the brain-clogging effects of video-conferencing technology may make meetings even more tiring, the usual culprits are also probably still playing a role: meetings that are too long, too frequent, and lack direction. Here are some tips to make your video calls less draining: Keep the Meetings Short - Attention spans keep getting shorter — your meeting times should reflect that. Don’t be afraid to limit meetings to 15 - 25 minutes. To figure ideal meeting length, think about how much time you need for what you want to achieve, then cut 5 to 10 minutes to create a sense of urgency. This pressure seems to create more focus in meetings. Invite Fewer People - Resist the urge to over invite. With too many people, the meeting becomes less focused and harder to manage. Instead of inviting everyone, stick to essential team members. You can always record the meeting and send to the rest of the team. If you’re worried about shutting people out of meetings by limiting the invites, send relevant players an invite, but be sure to let them know what the meeting is about and that their presence and participation is optional, not mandatory. Sort Tech Problems Early so the Meeting Starts on Time - Few things are more frustrating than meetings that start late because of software issues. To ensure that a meeting starts on time, facilitators should log in five minutes early to make sure that they have the necessary software and that the technology is working. Make Video Optional - Keeping your camera on can help prevent multitasking and ensure people are tuned in, however, the added pressure of having to be “on” during a video call may leave some feeling more drained. If there’s a lot going on around them, people may not want to turn the camera on. Some employers require cameras on, but if you have a choice, make a thoughtful decision about whether to do so Before Scheduling, Always Ask: Is This Meeting Really Necessary? - Be thoughtful about calling meetings. Are so many really necessary? Will a video call will actually help you meet an important deadline? Can the same information be shared just as easily in an email or quick phone call? If there’s no real value don’t do it. Limit Other Potential Distractions – Silence any desktop/email notification pop ups, so you’re not thinking about responding to the email while I’m in the meeting, multitasking is going to tire you out. January 2023 Consecration Month Thirty-One (31) Days of Renewal and Discernment

Dear Reid Chapel, The Month of January is right before us. For the past 12 months we have experienced God’s Grace, Mercy and Love. We want to make sure that we end December 2022 in Prayer and Usher in the New Year of 2023 in Prayer. Prayer is the only we will prepare for a productive year at Reid Chapel AME Church. We will take the entire month of January as a season of Consecration and Rededication as spiritual preparation for the rest of 2023. Reid Chapel and V.V. Reid School will celebrate 70 Years of Christian Witness, Ministry and Education. While 70 Years is young for an AME Church, 70 Years is old for an AME Church School. V.V. Reid is the oldest AME Church School: Daycare, Kindergarten and Elementary School in the State of South Carolina. To God Be the Glory! The entire year of 2023 we will observe and celebrate 70 Years of Christian Service. We will begin on January in a season of Consecration and Prayer and Fasting and will read the entire book of Proverbs in 31 Days. How we start a new beginning determines the course and direction of that new beginning. Also during consecration month we are asking every member to give $1 a day to Reid Chapel beyond our Tithes and Offerings. That is simply $31 for the month of January 2023. This year we will expand our African highlights for all 12 months. We also plan to have Family night quarterly (Christian Ed/Sunday School). In 2016 we started the V.V. Reid Alumni Association. This coming year in 2023 you will see and hear a lot from this organization as we relaunch. We will continue with many of the ministry events that we usually have. Also we plan to relaunch our selling of fresh produce in the Spring of 2023. All organizations will have special days (WMS, LAY, YPD, Sons of Allen, Choirs, Ushers, Garden, etc) We will also have quarterly and possibly monthly church wide Mission Ministry Projects with volunteer opportunities for the entire Reid Chapel Family. Following is an informal spotlight calendar for 2023 .

Prayer Prayer is essential for believers to learn to hear from and speak to God. Prayer is simply a conversation with God. Meditation is when God speaks to us. We have to create an environment to speak to and hear from God. Bible Reading The reading of the word of God for believers is essential to understanding the written revelation that God has left for us. The Bible is a document that tells the story of a chosen people: which is literally a history of their walk with God: the Good, Bad and Indifferent. The Bible is also a book of revelation that tells the story of Jesus: birth, ministry, miracles, death, burial and resurrection. This gives us a glimpse of the Life of Jesus and how we should be rooted in Christ and emulate and follow his life. Fasting A simple definition of fasting is abstaining from food or drink. However we can fast from many things besides food or drink. Fasting is the season of purging ourselves of something and replacing it with spiritual things: Prayer/Bible Reading. (Instead of watching 30 minutes of television, read the Bible or Pray during that time.) On Sunday, January 1, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. we will begin our fast as a Congregation. We will read the entire book of Proverbs during January. We will read 1 Proverb a Day. Each week give up something that you know you don’t need. For me I will be giving up Chick-Fil-A and Sweets for the entire Month of January 2023. Fasting is a Spiritual Discipline. Just as praying and practicing forgiveness and repentance are natural ingredients of the Christian faith, fasting is also part of our Biblical and Spiritual mandate to draw closer to the Lord. Fasting is not easy. Fasting at its very core is sacrifice. What are you willing to sacrifice or give up to draw closer to God? Whenever you find yourself craving or desiring something, replace that item with Prayer or Bible Reading. If our physical body is sick our spiritual well-being is affected. We also want to encourage everyone to support African-American Businesses during the months of January and February. as well as Pentecost Season. For example if you want to go out to eat please consider AfricanAmerican eating establishments. Also as we prepare for our Church Anniversary in March we will be highlighting African-American businesses. It is important that we become the type of Christians that have Spiritual Power. Christians are supposed to be able to lay hands on the sick and heal, talk demons down and have extraordinary spiritual power. We can’t have spiritual power unless we manage ourselves: Mind, Body, Soul, Spirit and possessions well. This starts with consecration: setting ourselves apart. When we Pray our Life will be full of Purpose, Mission and Focus. When we fast we purge ourselves of things that don’t need to be in our lives. Satan does not want us to be close to God. Satan will do anything to discourage us from getting closer to God. When we fast, spiritual warfare will begin. We can only become like Christ if we recognize that the Earth is the Lord’s and his fullness thereof. We can only become like Christ if we Manage and steward ourselves in the image and likeness of God. We can only accomplish this through Prayer and Fasting. To God be the Glory,
